[EN] The redox transitions of PANI in acidic medium have been monitored by a combination of cyclic voltammetry, in situ conductance and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. The results of the semiquantitative analysis strongly suggest that the classical tetrameric model of PANI does not satisfactorily describe the actual structures of the polymer at different redox states. An octameric model is revisited, with the inclusion of essential resonant structures, to provide an appropriate prediction of the relative IR intensity changes of the aromatic Csingle bondC stretching (at around 1520 cm¿1) and the quinoid Cdouble bondC stretching (at around 1590 cm¿1) vibrations observed by FTIR, which are difficult to interpret by considering only 4 aniline rings. Particularly, it is found that the emeraldine state is better described as a resonance hybrid of the classical bipolaronic and semiquinoid (polaron lattice) structures, while most of the charge transferred at the onset of the second voltammetric peak comes from the additional oxidation of this hybrid, which becomes unstable in the electrochemical environment producing mineralization to CO2 and release of soluble quinones.

- Abstract
In the practice of beekeeping it is generally accepted that the colony production is directly related to the quality of the queen. Of all the possible variables related to such quality, birth weight is considered one of the most useful. In our study we have looked the effect of the breeding colony of the local bee subspecies (Apis melífera iberiensis Engel), on the weight of the new queens at birth, and the weight of the wax cells in which they were reared. To carry out the breeding we have used the Doolittle method, a procedure widely used by beekeepers. Between the months of March and May of 2019, we raised 140 queens, carrying out eight breeding cycles and using four different hives. The mean weight of the queens at birth was 194 ± 26 mg (x ± SD), and that of the brood cells 604 ± 125 (x± SD). The results obtained did not show significant differences between the brood hives, for the weight variable of the queens at birth, but there were differences in the case of the variable weight of the queen cells., En el mundo apícola se acepta que la producción de una determinada colonia de abejas se encuentra directamente relacionada con la calidad de la reina.

The spectroelectrochemical behavior of a neutral poly-[2,7-(fluorene)-1,4-(phenylene)] is performed to clarify the doping mechanism and to determine the relative charge carrier mobility in the conjugated polymer. Controlled injection of charge quenches the fluorescent emission of the conjugated polymer and the injection of holes completely eliminates the emission, while electrons quench only up to one-third of the initial fluorescence of the polymer.

- Abstract
[EN] The need for improving the energy harvesting from Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) has boosted the design of new materials in order to increase the power performance of this technology and facilitate its practical application. According to this approach, in this work different poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT-PSS) modified electrodes have been synthesised and evaluated as anodes in urine-fed MFCs. The electrochemical synthesis of PEDOT-PSS was performed by potentiostatic step experiments from aqueous solution at a fixed potential of 1.80 V (vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode) for different times: 30, 60, 120 and 240 s. Compared with other methods, this technique allowed us not only to reduce the processing time of the electrodes but also better control of the chemical composition of the deposited polymer and therefore, obtain more efficient polymer films. All modified anodes outperformed the maximum power output by MFCs working with the bare carbon veil electrode but the maximum value was observed when MFCs were working with the PEDOT-PSS based anode obtained after 30 s of electropolymerisation (535.1 µW). This value was 24.3 % higher than using the bare carbon veil electrode. Moreover, the functionality of the PEDOT-PSS anodes was reported over 90 days working in continuous mode.

Cobalt oxide ([Co.sub.3][O.sub.4]) and copper-doped cobalt oxide ([Cu.sub.x][Co.sub.3-x][O.sub.4]) films are prepared onto titanium support by the thermal decomposition method and are characterized by different techniques. The analysis of surface cation distribution has indicated that the Cu(II) ions have preference for octahedral sites, although the relative amount of Cu(II) at tetrahedral position rises as the amount of copper increases in the oxide layer.

Hematological values have an important role in the diagnostic and clinical treatment of animal species; thus, it was development a hematological survey in individuals of Eretmochelys imbricata and Caretta caretta presents in the Venezuelan Alta Guajira, which to provide health status information about these globally threatened sea turtle species. The species, size and age were considered as variables that could be have effect in the variability of hematological values observed for these populations. Blood samples of 30 individuals were collected, from April to August 2004, by puncturing the dorsal cervical sinuses. Hemocytometer technique were used to perform the hematological survey, including Red Blood Cell (RBC) and White Blood Cell Count (WBC), Hematocrit (Hct), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) and Leukocytes differential count. Additionally, were measured the Curved Carapace Length (CCL) and Curved Carapace Width (CCW) to estimate the size and sexual maturity at animals. Mean hematological values obtained for E. imbricata were RCB 39.12×104 µL; WBC 5.82×103 µL; Hct 37.67 %; and MCV 979.89 fL; while C. caretta showed mean values of RCB 36.10×104 µL; WBC 6.93×103 µL; Hct 35.67 %; and VCM 1014.51 fL. Leukocytes differential count showed four types of cells for both species: Heterophils, Lymphocytes, Eosinophils, and Monocytes. Statistical analysis showed significant differences between species for Hct, MCV, heterophils, and esosinophils values. Individuals of E. imbricata showed a relationship between size and RBC, and WBC values. These populations can be categorized as healthy, which coincides with previously reported values ranges for species. The results obtained in this study can be used in the assessing health status of other sea turtles populations in Venezuela and Caribbean. 363 - 371 dprieto@cmc.org.ve

[EN] Boron-doped diamond electrodes have emerged as anodic material due to their high physical, chemical and electrochemical stability. These characteristics make it particularly interesting for electrochemical wastewater treatments and especially due to its high overpotential for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction. Diamond electrodes present the maximum efficiency in pollutant removal in water, just limited by diffusioncontrolled electrochemical kinetics. Results are presented for the elimination of benzoic acid and for the electrochemical treatment of synthetic tannery wastewater. The results indicate that diamond electrodes exhibit the best performance for the removal of total phenols, COD, TOC, and colour, [ES] Los electrodos de diamante dopados con boro han surgido como un nuevo material anódico debido a su propiedades como estabilidad física, química y electroquímica.

- Abstract
Two different approaches are proposed in this work in order to study the influence of the ionic liquid presence in the reaction of glucose oxidation by HO in mild conditions. The ionic liquids are applied either as a solvent by using homogeneous Mo based catalyst, [Mo(O)(O)(HO)] complex, or by using it as an integral part of a heterogeneous catalyst, organic inorganic hybrids based on Mo Keggin structure. Both catalytic strategies resulted in acceptable glucose transformation degrees but lead to different oxidation products depending on the role of the ionic liquid. The hybrid approach restrains the number of the received products being the most selective one. A detailed study of the effect of the hybrid nature and reaction conditions is proposed in the second part of this study.

Content of total protein (PT), albumin (Alb), globulins (Glb), urea (U), uric acid (AU), creatinine (Ct) and transaminase levels (oxalacetic-glutamic (TGO) and piruvic-glutamic (TGP)) was evaluated in the blood plasm of golden hamster (Mesocrisetus auratus L.), fed diets (crude protein; PB= 13.5-19.6%) with red worm (HL) (Eisenia spp.) meal and two conventional feeds (Conejarina®; PB= 11.4% and Ratarina®; PB= 21.1%). The PT, Alb, Glb and Ct concentration oscillated among 5-6, 2-3, 2-3 g/dL y 0,3-0,4 mg/dL, respectively, no significant differences among the treatments in the assay were observed (p>0.05). In the assay the U and AU content fluctuated between 23-101 y 3-9 mg/dL, respectively; according to the PB level, HL inclusion and measurement time. The transaminase levels were high and variables during the second week of assay, according to the proteic level diets (TGO: 101-699 y TGP: 54-890 UI/ L). The seric PT, Glb, Alb and Ct content were independent of PB diets and HL proportion, while the U (R²= 0.509*), TGO (R²= 0.661**) and TGP (R²= 0.524*) level were related with proteic level of diets, and the U (R²= 0.502*) and AU (R²= 0.531*) contents with the HL inclusion. The HL addition in 24, 27 and 30% for making formulated proteic diets to M. auratus cause significant variation in the normal values of U, AU and transaminases.

A group of four (4) healthy male sheep were immunized with Bothrops asper venom, in order to study the development of the immune response induced by the application of a hiperimmunization protocol. Blood samples were taken from the sheep every seven days in nine different opportunities. With the resultant serum, neutralization tests were done in mice. ED50 was calculated and expressed in µg of neutralized venom per ml of serum, at the same time, general health conditions of sheep were observed during the hiperimmunization protocol. No general or local alterations of health were present as consequence of venom inoculations. Individual variations in the magnitude of the increase of antibody titles were observed in the obtained results. None the less common features in the antibody title curves were also recorded. The mean optimal average (705,5 µg/ml) was obtained on day 21 after the first challenge. At that time, the individual sheep with the highest value was 840 µg/ml and the lowest was 593 µg/ml; the lowest average of all samples (308 µg/ml ) was observed on day 56. It is recommend that animals to be used in the commercial venom antiserum production need to be individually screened and selected based on a satisfactory immune response.

The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is probably the more wellknown sea turtle due to its historical food value and significant amount of research that has been for its conservation,is declared national and internationally as an endangered species of Extinction. In order to determine reference hematological values for Ch. mydas a total of thirty turtles were captured placing nets in the line of coast from Gulf of Venezuela, high Guajira. Blood samples were taken from the dorsal cervical sinuses in all the animals. Red Blood Cell (RBC), White Blood Cell (WBC), Packed Cell Volume (PCV), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), differential count of leukocytes were measured. The curved carapace length (CCL) and curved carapace width (CCW) were measured in order to estimate the turtles age. The values averages of the hematological parameters were RBC (0.42 × 10^6µL), WBC (6.16 × 10³µL), PCV (29.40%), MCV (730.17 fL), Heterophils (82.9%-5.1023 × 10³/µL), Lymphocytes (14.7%-0.9081 × 10³/µL), Eosinophils (0.47%-0.0236 × 10³/µL), Monocytes (1.97%-0.1259 × 10³/µL). These results coincide with the reference intervals documented for the species. The variability in some of the parameters evaluated could be attributed to factors as age, sex, reproductive state, stress, temperature, and capture technique and analysis methods. 219 - 226 Bimestral

This research deals with the induced immune response by applying a pre-established hyperimmunization schedule against Crotalus durissus cumanensis venom to a group of five healthy ovines, which were not previously exposed to this venom. Blood samples were collected every 7 days during a period of 70 days. Sera obtained was used for neutralization test on mice, by using a challenge dosage of 3 LD50. The ED50 was found and expressed as pg of the neutralized venom by each ml of sera. Results revealed individual variation in the magnitude of the antibody titers rise as well as, in common features on the curve pattern. The optimum average titer (602 μg/ml), was found on day 21 after the first inoculation which corresponded with the third day after the last challenge. By this time the ovine with the highest titer reached 978 μg/ml whereas the lowest was 338 μg/ml. On the other hand, the lowest average (115.2 μg/ml) was observed on day 70. Results suggest that each ovine must be evaluated and selected on the bases of a satisfactory immune response, before its utilization for antivenom production. 388 - 394 Bimestral

Cobalt oxide (Co3 O4) and copper-doped cobalt oxide (Cux Co3-x O4) films supported on titanium have been prepared by the thermal decomposilion method. The electrodes have been characterized by different techniques like scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV). and X-Ray pholoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS spectra correspond lo a characteristic monophasic Cu-Co spinel oxides when x is below 1. However, when the copper contení exceeds that for the stoichiometric CuCo f)4 spinel, a new CuO phase segregates at the surface. The analysis of the surface cation distribution in spinel structure indicates that Cu(ll) cation are preferently located in octahedral sites of higher electrochemical activity. Revisión por pares

- Abstract
“The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12678-013-0182-x”, The electrochemical behaviour of o-cresol in acidic medium on platinum electrode has been studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The o-cresol suffers hydrolysis during oxidation giving rise to the formation of methyl-p-benzoquinone. In situ FTIR spectroscopic studies also reveal the presence of CO2, formed as a consequence of the rupture of the aromatic ring. Moreover, the oxidation of o-cresol in acidic medium produces a polymeric film on the platinum surface that precludes further oxidation of o-cresol. The reduction of o-cresol at potentials below 0 V produces in the first step the partial reduction of the aromatic ring and when the potential goes to values below 0 V, methyl-cyclohexanone.

- Abstract
Content of total protein (PT), albumin (Alb), globulins (Glb), urea (U), uric acid (AU), creatinine (Ct) and transaminase levels (oxalacetic-glutamic (TGO) and piruvic-glutamic (TGP)) was evaluated in the blood plasm of golden hamster (Mesocrisetus auratus L.), fed diets (crude protein; PB= 13.5- 19.6%) with red worm (HL) (Eisenia spp.) meal and two conventional feeds (Conejarina®; PB= 11.4% and Ratarina®; PB= 21.1%). The PT, Alb, Glb and Ct concentration oscillated among 5-6, 2- 3, 2-3 g/dL y 0,3-0,4 mg/dL, respectively, no significant differences among the treatments in the assay were observed (p>0.05). The seric PT, Glb, Alb and Ct content were independent of PB diets and HL proportion, while the U (R 2 = 0.509*), TGO (R 2 = 0.661**) and TGP (R 2 = 0.524*) level were related with proteic level of diets, and the U (R 2 = 0.502*) and AU (R 2 = 0.531*) contents with the HL inclusion.

- Abstract
During the acute phase of myocardial ischemia, electrophysiological alterations in ventricular cells exacerbate serious arrhythmias such as reentries, Indeed, extracellular potassium accumulation in an ischemic zone reduces conduction velocity. Concomitantly, the activation of ATP dependent potassium current (I sub k(sub ATP)) under ischemic conditions provokes a reduction in action potential duration (APD), creating inhomogeneities within the tissue, which represent the main cause of unidirectional block and reentry, In this work, we investigate the patterns of activation in an isotropic ischemic bidimensional tissue by means of computer simulations, Using the Luo-Rudy phase II model of ventricular action potential and the I sub k (sub ATP) formulation, we stimulated prematurely a bidimensional tissue of 5 cm2 with a normal zone, an ischemic zone and a border zone at different instants of time, to reproduce realistic conditions of reentry. Our results agree with experimental works and show the existence of a time interval (window of block), in which propagation is blocked in the central zone of ischaemia., Papers from 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, October 25-26, 2001 held in Istanbul, Turkey. - Abstract
The antimicrobial properties of a series of anionic bis(carbene) silver complexes Na
3 [Ag(NHCR )2 ] were investigated ( 2a - 2g and 2c' , where NHCR is a 2,2'-(imidazol-2-ylidene)dicarboxylate-type N -heterocyclic carbene). The complexes were synthesized by the interaction of imidazolium dicarboxylate compounds with silver oxide in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide. Complexes 2f , g were characterized analytically and spectroscopically, and the ligand precursor 1f and complexes 2c and 2g were structurally identified by X-ray diffraction methods. The anions of 2c and 2g , [Ag(NHCR )2 ]3- , showed a typical linear disposition of Ccarbene -Ag-Ccarbene atoms and an uncommonly eclipsed conformation of carbene ligands. The antimicrobial properties of complexes 2a - g , which contains chiral ( 2b - 2e and 2c' ) and non-chiral derivatives ( 2a , f , g ), were evaluated against Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and a Gram-positive bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus . From the observed values of the minimal inhibitory concentration and minimal bactericidal concentration, complexes 2a and 2b showed the best antimicrobial activity against all strains. An interesting chirality-antimicrobial relationship was found, and eutomer 2c' showed better activity than its enantiomer 2c against the three bacteria. Furthermore, these complexes were investigated experimentally and theoretically by109 Ag nuclear magnetic resonance, and the electronic and steric characteristics of the dianionic carbene ligands were also examined.- Published

49. Electroassisted Incorporation of Ferrocene within Sol-Gel Silica Films to Enhance Electron Transfer.

- Abstract
The sol-gel method is a straightforward technique that allows electrode modification with silica thin films. Furthermore, the silica pores could be functionalized to enhance the electrical conductivity and reactivity of the silica films. In this context, silica thin films were functionalized with ferrocene species. This functionalization was performed by electroassisted accumulation, generating a micro-structured composite electrode (Fc@SiO
2 electrode). These modified electrodes were characterized by electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods, pointing out that ferrocene species were confined with high stability within the microporous silica thin film, demonstrating the good adsorption capacity of the silica. While the spectroelectrochemical characterization indicates that only a fraction of the confined species within the silica films were electroactive, the electrochemical results demonstrate that the Fc@SiO2 film enhances the electrochemical response of cytochrome c in a solution, which gives rise to further applications of these films for redox-controlled release and electrochemical detection of other redox-active proteins.- Published

- Abstract
This work describes the development and characterization of fluorescent nanocomposite hydrogels, with high swelling and absorption capacity, and prepared using a green protocol. These fluorescent materials are obtained by incorporating, for the first time, polyfluorenes-based nanoparticles with different emission bands-poly[9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl] (PFO) and poly[(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-(1,4-benzo-{2,1,3}-thiadiazole)] (F8BT)-into a three-dimensional polymeric network based on polyacrylamide. To this end, two strategies were explored: incorporation of the nanoparticles during the polymerization process (in situ) and embedment after the hydrogel formation (ex situ). The results show that the combination of PFO nanoparticles introduced by the ex situ method provided materials with good storage stability, homogeneity and reproducibility properties, allowing their preservation in the form of xerogel. The fluorescent nanocomposite hydrogels have been tested as a transportable and user-friendly sensing platform. In particular, the ability of these materials to specifically detect the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP) has been evaluated as a proof-of-concept. The sensor was able to quantify the presence of the enzyme in an aqueous sample with a response time of 10 min and LOD of 21 nM. Given these results, we consider that this device shows great potential for quantifying physiological ALP levels as well as enzyme activity in environmental samples.
