Background: First-line antifungal treatment for invasive mucormycosis (IM) consists of liposomal amphotericin B. Salvage treatment options are limited and often based on posaconazole oral suspension. With the approval of posaconazole new formulations, patients could benefit from improved pharmacokinetics, safety and tolerability. Objectives: Our aim was to assess the effectiveness of posaconazole new formulations for IM treatment. Methods: We performed a case-matched analysis with proven or probable IM patients from the FungiScope (R) Registry. First-line posaconazole new formulations (1st-POSnew) and first-line amphotericin B plus posaconazole new formulations (1st-AMB+POSnew) cases were matched with first-line amphotericin B-based (1st-AMB) treatment controls. Salvage posaconazole new formulations (SAL-POSnew) cases were matched with salvage posaconazole oral suspension (SAL-POSsusp) controls. Each case was matched with up to three controls (based on severity, haematological/oncological malignancy, surgery and/or renal dysfunction). Results: Five patients receiving 1st-POSnew, 18 receiving 1st-AMB+POSnew and 22 receiving SAL-POSnew were identified. By day 42, a favourable response was reported for 80.0% (n=4/5) of patients receiving 1st-POSnew, for 27.8% (n=5/18) receiving 1st-AMB+POSnew and for 50.0% (n=11/22) receiving SAL-POSnew. Day 42 all-cause mortality of patients receiving posaconazole new formulations was lower compared with controls [20.0% (n=1/5) in 1st-POSnew versus 53.3% (n=8/15) in 1st-AMB; 33.3% (n=6/18) in 1st-AMB+POSnew versus 52.0% (n=26/50) in 1st-AMB; and 0.0% (n=0/22) in SAL-POSnew versus 4.4% (n=2/45) in SAL-POSsusp]. Conclusions: Posaconazole new formulations were effective in terms of treatment response and associated mortality of IM. While posaconazole new formulations may be an alternative for treatment of IM, the limited sample size of our study calls for a cautious interpretation of these observations.

La thèse présentée dans ce manuscrit propose un cadre méthodologique pour l'élaboration et la validation d'un outil de formation au génie mécanique en réalité virtuelle. Elle s'inscrit dans les avancées récentes du domaine de la réalité virtuelle et s'intègre à la recherche sur les environnements virtuels pour l'apprentissage humain. Les travaux présentés se focalisent en particulier sur les modalités d'interaction spécifiques à mettre en oeuvre pour permettre à un opérateur de se former virtuellement à l'utilisation de machines-outils. L'application de ces recherches donne lieu à la réalisation d'un prototype dans lequel les principaux résultats y sont illustrés et décrits à travers les étapes suivantes : la préparation d'un scénario pédagogique, les choix techniques et ergonomiques guidant le développement de l'application, la mise en place d'un environnement virtuel immersif et interactif pour l'apprentissage, et enfin la validation d'une telle application. Les expérimentations menées avec des enseignants et des étudiants en génie mécanique ont mis en évidence un grand intérêt pour l'outil proposé de la part des enseignants et ont permis de valider l'approche utilisée suivant les facteurs de succès des jeux d'apprentissages : utilisabilité, acceptabilité et utilité., The thesis presented in this manuscript offers a methodological framework used to design, implement and validate a virtual learning environment for mechanical engineering. It takes advantage of the recent advances in the domain of virtual reality to build upon existing research in the field of virtual environments for learning. This work is focused on specific interaction modalities leveraged in a virtual training for teaching learners to operate actual machine tools. Application of this research leads to the development of a prototype in which the primary findings are illustrated and described through the following steps : preparation of a pedagogical scenario, technical and ergonomic choices guiding the implementation of the application, design of an immersive and interactive virtual environment for learning, and finally the validation of such an application. Experimentation with teachers and student in the field of mechanical engineering brought to light the genuine interest from the teachers or the tool they tested and allowed us to validate our approach upon the success factors for learning game : usability, acceptability and utility.

In this work we present a determinant expression for the domain-wall boundary condition partition function of rational (XXX) Richardson–Gaudin models which, in addition to N-1 spins 1/2, contains one arbitrarily large spin S. The proposed determinant representation is written in terms of a set of variables which, from previous work, are known to define eigenstates of the quantum integrable models belonging to this class as solutions to quadratic Bethe equations. Such a determinant can be useful numerically since systems of quadratic equations are much simpler to solve than the usual highly nonlinear Bethe equations. It can therefore offer significant gains in stability and computation speed.

We study photonic band gap formation in two-dimensional high-refractive-index disordered materials where the dielectric structure is derived from packing disks in real and reciprocal space. Numerical calculations of the photonic density of states demonstrate the presence of a band gap for all polarizations in both cases. We find that the band gap width is controlled by the increase in positional correlation inducing short-range order and hyperuniformity concurrently. Our findings suggest that the optimization of short-range order, in particular the tailoring of Bragg scattering at the isotropic Brillouin zone, are of key importance for designing disordered PBG materials.

The mesoscale fabrication of silicon hyperuniform disordered materials with a broad and pronounced photonic gap in the shortwave infrared is reported. Due to their unique structure and their high refractive index, these fascinating materials are predicted to possess a complete photonic bandgap in the absence of any long-range order.

We use a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) to produce arrays of Bessel beams by using multiple axicon phase-masks on the SLM. This approach utilises the whole of the SLM, rather than just a thin annular region (which is the case if the SLM is in the far-field of the generated Bessel beams). Using the whole SLM rather than just an annular region means that the required intensity on the SLM is an order of magnitude lower for a given power in the Bessel beams. Spreading the power over the whole SLM is important for high-power applications such as laser micromachining. We allow the axicons to overlap and interfere in the hologram, so the axial length of the Bessel beam core is maintained as we add more beams to the array. In the present article we substantially expand on our recent study about the fabrication of mesoscale polymeric templates of disordered photonic network materials [Haberko and Scheffold, Opt. Expr. 21, 1057 (2013)]. We present a detailed analysis and discussion of important technical aspects related to the fabrication and characterization of these fascinating materials. Compared to our initial report we were able to reduce the typical structural length scale of the seed pattern from a=3.3μm to a=2μm, bringing it closer to the technologically relevant fiber-optic communications wavelength range around λ∼1.5μm. We have employed scanning electron microscopy coupled with focused ion beam cutting to look inside the bulk of the samples of different heights. Moreover, we demonstrate the use of laser scanning confocal microscopy to assess the real space structure of the samples fabricated by direct laser writing. We address in detail questions about scalability, finite size effects, and geometrical distortions. We also study the effect of the lithographic voxel shape, that is, the ellipsoidal shape of the laser pen used in the fabrication process. To this end we employ detailed numerical modeling of the scattering function using a discrete dipole approximation scheme.

Most modern renewables add intermittent behaviour and high variability to electric markets, forcing other renewables and themselves to perform power curtailment and/or having extra generating units connected to the network to compensate power, voltage and frequency variations. In order to handle this scenario, Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) have risen as enabling technologies capable to provide backup energy to compensate power, voltage and frequency fluctuations and, at the same time, offer additional benefits as ancillary services, peak shaving, load shifting, base load generation, etc. This paper presents a novel bidirectional Partial Power Converter (PPC), as an interface between a Battery ESS (BESS) and a grid-tied Photovoltaic (PV) plant. To obtain a better understanding of the converter, its mathematical model is presented and its operation modes are explained. The main purpose of this configuration is to provide peak shaving capability to a grid-tied PV plant, while providing a high efficiency BESS. Simulation results show the operation of the full system (grid-tied PV plant and BESS), performing peak shaving under a step-down and up in solar irradiation.

Conventional perturb and observe and other classical maximum power point tracking algorithms are capable of tracking a local maximum, but can not guarantee to operate at the global maximum. A solution to such limitation is to perform a scan of the photovoltaic characteristic periodically in order to ensure operation at the global maximum. However, such a scan generates high output power variations that may not comply with grid codes. In order to overcome this drawback and allow a global scan for maximum power point tracking purposes, this paper proposes a hybrid photovoltaic system with an ultra-capacitor based energy storage system. Simulations are provide to validated the proposed configuration. Results show that the photovoltaic scan allows operation at the global maximum power point, while the ultra-capacitor manage the power transient so that the output fluctuation are kept within reasonable limits.

Photonic crystal materials are based on a periodic modulation of the dielectric constant on length scales comparable to the wavelength of light. These materials can exhibit photonic band gaps; frequency regions for which the propagation of electromagnetic radiation is forbidden due to the depletion of the density of states. In order to exhibit a full band gap, 3D PCs must present a threshold refractive index contrast that depends on the crystal structure. In the case of the so-called woodpile photonic crystals this threshold is comparably low, approximately 1.9 for the direct structure. Therefore direct or inverted woodpiles made of high refractive index materials like silicon, germanium or titanium dioxide are sought after. Here we show that, by combining multiphoton lithography and atomic layer deposition, we can achieve a direct inversion of polymer templates into TiO₂ based photonic crystals. The obtained structures show remarkable optical properties in the near-infrared region with almost perfect specular reflectance, a transmission dip close to the detection limit and a Bragg length comparable to the lattice constant.
