Gender imbalance in computing education is a well-known issue around the world. The term "leaky pipeline" is often used to describe the lack of retention of women before they progress to senior roles. Numerous initiatives have targeted the problem of the leaky pipeline in recent decades. This paper provides a comprehensive review of initiatives related to techniques used to boost recruitment and retention of women in undergraduate computing and related courses in higher education. The primary aim was to identify interventions or initiatives (which we called "actions") that have shown some effectiveness. A secondary objective was to structure our findings as a categorisation, in order to enable future action discussion, comparison and planning. A particular challenge faced in a significant portion of the work was the lack of evaluation: i.e. the assessment of the direct relationship between the initiatives and the outcomes on retention or recruitment. The actions were categorised into four groups: Policy, Pedagogy, Influence and Support and Promotion and Engagement. Policy actions need support and potentially structural change at institution level. Pedagogy actions are initiatives related to the teaching of computing courses. The Influence and Support category includes actions associated with ways to influence women to choose computing and once enrolled to support and encourage them to stay. Finally, Promotion and Engagement actions are initiatives to promote computing based courses and involve engagement and outreach activities. We present our categorisation, identifying the literature related to actions under each category and subcategory. We discuss the challenges with evaluating the direct impact of actions and outline how this work leads towards the next phase of our work - a toolkit of actions to promote retention and recruitment of women in computing undergraduate courses., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

This thesis explores the discourse surrounding the consumption of Guinness, the product, and it's advertising, utilising the theoretical structure of Johnson's circuit of culture. The theoretical underpinnings of the circuit of culture have been validated through the process of empirical investigation. This is achieved by interviewing the producers of the marketing and advertising strategies; interviewing Guinness consumers across three spaces (Ireland, the UK and the USA); and by analysing its advertising texts. The circuit of culture enabled me to explore the relationship between the consumption of the product and the consuming audience to see how the product was being used by Irish migrants to restore the imagined space called 'home'. Due to the empirical process I uncovered a rich tapestry of data and discovered issues previously unconsidered. For example, the research shows that audiences in Ireland and Abroad use Guinness as a metaphor for Irishness, Community, and National Identity. An exploration of the product and its signifiers unlocks myths and rituals surrounding it and demonstrates the role of the product and its consumption in the lived experiences of the consumer. Abroad, the exploration of this act of consumption uncovers issues such as racism, intra-racism, hybridity and authenticity. The research contributes in two main ways. It offers marketing and advertising theory a model for a more thorough understanding of the relationship between a product and its target audience. It also contributes to cultural studies theory by demonstrating the process and the effectiveness of the circuit of culture as an empirical tool.

- Abstract
Half a century ago, all children played outside, many getting to know the ecosystems around them in detail, marveling at the awe and wonder of shooting stars, thick fog, the structure of snowflakes, watching bats emerge at dusk, and how spiders spin a web. Learning science, while covered in school, was much more meaningful through direct experience. Not only was it informative, but also a process that resulted in a relationship with the natural world, a connection made. As a teacher, I took students outside as often as possible. We took walks and learned to call birds, identify clouds and the weather that might follow, visit the buffalo herd, and watch bumblebees move from flower to flower. And then there was the occasional rainbow or first snow that interrupted lessons and sent us scurrying out to marvel at it. The more we went out, the more they wanted to go out. Over time, the outdoor classroom approach for bringing students into direct contact with the natural surroundings encouraged others to include outdoor forays. The approach was catching on. Creating a 50-minute program for students K-8 at a public school on a reservation, interpreting science through the cultural lens, had a more significant impact. Stories and relevant ways of viewing their world supported cultural pride. Becoming caring stewards turned them into activists for change, growing their own food, and making a difference.

While in recent decades a number of efforts have been coordinated to address the issue of gender imbalance in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines, the problem still persists. Many authors speak of the ‘leaky’ pipeline metaphor that describes the loss of women in STEM areas before reaching senior roles. Research shows that women who leave are unlikely to return. The issue is particularly severe in the area of computer science, where women represent less than 20% of the labour force across the EU. This poster introduces a summary of findings from the literature on how to effectively recruit and retain women in computer science education. The focus was to identify initiatives with demonstrated impact that targeted mainly female undergraduate computing, computer science and technology students. This work considers the initiatives and interventions reported by the academic community, but also includes success stories from the non-academic sources around the globe, such as international equality awards submissions and online reports from universities, non-profit organisations and personal practices. Sources in languages other than English have also been considered. Practical initiatives that showed impact (which we call ‘Actions’) were identified and categorised into four groups comprising Policy, Pedagogy, Promotion and Influence. Each category is arranged into sub-groups and examples of actions that showed impact are provided for each of these groups. This research aims to help the wider community to get one step closer towards gender balance in computer science.

This study is concerned with developing culturally sensitive risk management strategies among Old Order Mennonite (OOM) and other communities, living in the Township of Woolwich and farming along a tributary of the Grand River. Based on 34 semi-structured interviews with two groups of female participants, the multiple layers of culture (community context, people's shared core values, worldviews) were analyzed in terms of their effect on risk perception as well as risk attenuation or risk amplification processes. This research with excluded 'others' articulated an exploration of modern environmental hazards in a place isolated from outsiders. The research reveals not only that epistemic difference shaped these women's perception of risk, but also that their responses were modified through ongoing obligation to cultural and religious separation, and a centuries-old resistance to change and modernity. By focusing on the influence of culture in risk perception, this case study contributes essential insights for environmental planners and managers into developing collaborative work with conservative religious communities faced with environmental hazards. Key Words Old Order Mennonites, environmental risk attenuation, environmental planning, Introduction This paper examines the differences in environmental risk perception between an Old Order Mennonite (OOM) community in the Township of Woolwich, Ontario and a group of non-Old Order Mennonites [...]

- Abstract
This study examines the strategies used by the inhabitants of coastal rural communities of Bangladesh to build resilience against cyclone disasters, and the effects of these strategies on their livelihood dynamics and recovery and reconstruction processes. It also examines issues of good disaster governance and policy implementation at the local community level. In this study, particular attention was paid to on-the-ground validation of attributes of community resilience to disaster-shocks from the perspective of disaster victims (i.e., emic perspectives). The research applied a mixed-method approach to an exploratory case study design. Field investigation was carried out in two cyclone-affected Unions of Kalapara Upazila in Patuakhali District of southwest Bangladesh. A number of Participatory Rural Appraisal tools - namely a household survey, focus group discussions, key informant interviews, in-depth case studies, and document reviews - were employed to collect the necessary data. The findings revealed that a significant number of cyclone victims have shifted their postdisaster livelihoods by changing their occupation—both intrasectorally and intersectorally. Flexibility in livelihood strategies and diversity of income generation were found to be critical to post-cyclone livelihood reconstruction. The cyclone victims in the studied communities recognized social actors as a pivotal attribute of community resilience, and ‘knowledge, skills and learning’; ‘values and beliefs’; ‘people-place connections’; ‘social networks and support’; ‘active institutions’; and ‘selforganization’ were ranked higher than other attributes. The study also found that several local-level disaster management programs under national policy frameworks were transformed into practice and resulted in positive impacts. However, many national policy initiatives were not executed effectively due to insufficient technical and financial capability, poor leadership, corruption, and top-down decision

- Abstract
Food-associated outbreaks linked to enteropathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica are of concern to public health. Pigs and their meat are recognized risk factors for transmission of Y. enterocolitica. This study aimed to describe the comparative genomics of Y. enterocolitica along with a number of misclassified Yersinia isolates, now constituting the recently described Yersinia hibernica. The latter was originally cultured from an environmental sample taken at a pig slaughterhouse. Unique features were identified in the genome of Y. hibernica, including a novel integrative conjugative element (ICE), denoted as ICEYh-1 contained within a 255 kbp region of plasticity. In addition, a zebrafish embryo infection model was adapted and applied to assess the virulence potential among Yersinia isolates including Y. hibernica.

Abstract Background The synapsin III (SYN III) gene on chromosome 22q is a candidate gene for schizophrenia susceptibility due to its chromosome location, neurological function, expression patterns and functional polymorphisms. Methods This research has established the mRNA expression of SYN III in 22 adult human brain regions as well as the methylation specificity in the closest CpG island of this gene. The methylation specificity studied in 31 brain regions (from a single individual) was also assessed in 51 human blood samples (representing 20 people affected with schizophrenia and 31 normal controls) including a pair of monozygotic twin discordant for schizophrenia and 2 non-human primates. Results The results show that the cytosine methylation in this genomic region is 1) restricted to cytosines in CpG dinucleotides 2) similar in brain regions and blood and 3) appears conserved in primate evolution. Two cytosines (cytosine 8 and 20) localized as the CpG dinucleotide are partially methylated in all brain regions studied. The methylation of these sites in schizophrenia and control blood samples was variable. While cytosine 8 was partially methylated in all samples, the distribution of partial to complete methylation at the cytosine 20 was 22:9 in controls as compared to 18:2 in schizophrenia (p = 0.82). Also, there is no difference in methylation between the affected and unaffected member of a monozygotic twin pair. Conclusion The variation in SYN III methylation studied is 1) not related to schizophrenia in the population sample or a monozygotic twin pair discordant for schizophrenia and 2) not related to the mRNA level of SYN IIIa in different human brain regions.

What are the critical challenges facing women and girls in the media? What we understand as ‘the media’ has undergone dramatic rethinking in recent years but the questions and answers remain the same. This question has been asked by media academics since the 1950’s when, with increased access to TV in the home, there was a parallel increase in questioning in academia with regard to concerns around gender portrayal. The question has also been answered, many times, and in many ways across the various and varied spaces that are ‘media’ and the possible interpretations of what we mean by ‘in’ the media. There are two spaces demanding discussion and focus when we ask What are the critical challenges facing women and girls in the media? The first is how are women and girls portrayed in the media, and the second is how women are placed as practitioners working in the media industry itself., peer-reviewed
