Abstract

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems employ a Linearly Chirped Microwave Waveform Generator (LCMWG) with large time–bandwidth product (TBWP), to provide a wide range resolution. Photonics has now been recognized as a disruptive approach to achieve high performance at bandwidth of few tens of gigahertz, with light and compact architectures, due to the typical photonics benefits, such as electromagnetic interference immunity, small power consumption, small footprint, and high immunity to vibration/shock and radiation. In this article, we report on the photonic generation of a high-frequency LCMW, with a large TBWP (102–103), using a chip-scaled architecture, based on a frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) and a recirculating phase modulation loop (RPML). A new configuration of the OEO employing an ultrahigh Q-factor resonator has been conceived to allow the oscillator working in Ka band at 40 GHz or even more, with very low phase noise. Key building block of the RPML is a phase modulator driven by an engineered parabolic split waveform. The ultra-large pulse compression rate (PCR) >> 102, together with large signal purity, was also obtained, making the proposed architecture particularly suitable for SAR systems with large range resolution demand, such as Earth surveillance and monitoring.

Abstract

A hybrid titanium dioxide/silicon rich nitride ring resonator with the unique feature of being simultaneously athermal and polarization-insensitive is reported for the first time to our knowledge. Although its potential application domain is extremely wide, the designed integrated microphotonic cavity, having a racetrack shape, is intended for notch filtering in a microwave photonic passband filter. A careful selection of the CMOS-compatible material system and an innovative design approach have allowed a very low dependence of the filtering shape on the input beam polarization and, simultaneously, a thermal drift of the resonance wavelength 4, 4 nm, and 30.7 dB, respectively.

3. A High-Q InP Resonant Angular Velocity Sensor for a Monolithically Integrated Optical Gyroscope

Abstract

The design, fabrication, and optical characterization of the sensing element of a photonic InP-based gyroscope intended for applications in the field of aerospace and defense are reported in this paper. The sensing element is a spiral resonator coupled to a straight bus waveguide through a multimode interference coupler and exhibits a Q factor of approximately 600 000 with a footprint of approximately 10 mm 2. The design of each component of the sensor is based on some well-established numerical methods such as the Finite Element Method, the beam propagation method, and the film mode matching method. The spiral cavity was designed using the standard transfer matrix method. The selected fabrication process, which is an enhanced version of the standard COBRA process, allows the monolithic integration of the sensing element with the other active components of the gyroscope, e.g., lasers, photodiodes, and modulators. Each component of the fabricated sensing element was optically characterized using an appropriate setup, which was also used for the optical characterization of the whole sensor. Based on the results of the characterization, the gyro performance was evaluated, and a way to improve both the resolution and the bias drift, i.e., down to 10°/h and 1°/h, respectively, was also clearly identified. The achieved results demonstrate, for the first time, the actual feasibility of a photonic gyro-on-chip through a well-established InP-based generic integration process.

4. Resonant Graphene-Based Tunable Optical Delay Line

Abstract

The design of a new graphene-based continuously tunable optical delay line formed by two vertically stacked microring resonators coupled to a straight waveguide is proposed. High values of delay time (τg = 360 ps) and a wide tuning range (Δτg = 230 ps) have been calculated, due to the graphene sandwiched between the stacked ring resonators, which also provides an electrooptical tuning of the delay with low energy consumption (Eswitch = 3.4 pJ) and fast switching time (tswitch -1 ps/μm2 has been calculated, which corresponds to an enhancement of about a factor 4 compared with the state-of-the-art of the integrated optical delay lines, also providing a switching time several times faster. Such performance, together with a small device footprint (3 μm2), gives a significant contribution to the state-of-the-art of optical delay lines, confirming the suitability of the graphene-based resonant cavity as a high-efficient optical delay line for applications in which fast tuning and wide range of tunability are required, e.g., phased array antennas.

5. Ultra-high Q/V hybrid cavity for strong light-matter interaction

Abstract

The ability to confine light at the nanoscale continues to excite the research community, with the ratio between quality factor Q and volume V, i.e., the Q/V ratio, being the key figure of merit. In order to achieve strong light-matter interaction, however, it is important to confine a lot of energy in the resonant cavity mode. Here, we demonstrate a novel cavity design that combines a photonic crystal nanobeam cavity with a plasmonic bowtie antenna. The nanobeam cavity is optimised for a good match with the antenna and provides a Q of 1700 and a transmission of 90%. Combined with the bowtie, the hybrid photonic-plasmonic cavity achieves a Q of 800 and a transmission of 20%, both of which remarkable achievements for a hybrid cavity. The ultra-high Q/V of the hybrid cavity is of order of 106 (λ/n)−3, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art of photonic resonant cavities. Based on the high Q/V and the high transmission, we demonstrate the strong efficiency of the hybrid cavity as a nanotweezer for optical trapping. We show that a stable trapping condition can be achieved for a single 200 nm Au bead for a duration of several minutes (ttrap > 5 min) and with very low optical power (Pin = 190 μW).

6. Design of an Optical Trapping Device Based on an Ultra-High Q/V Resonant Structure

Abstract

A novel photonic/plasmonic cavity based on a 1-D photonic crystal cavity vertically coupled to a plasmonic gold structure is reported. The design has been optimized to achieve an ultra-high Q/V ratio, therefore improving the light-matter interaction and making the device suitable for optical trapping applications. Accurate 3-D finite element method (FEM) simulations have been carried out to evaluate the device behavior and performance. The device shows Q = 2:8 × 103 and V = 4 × 10-4(λ=n)3, which correspond to a Q=V = 7 × 106(λ=n)-3 with a resonance transmission around 50% at λR = 1589:62 nm. A strong gradient of the optical energy has been observed in the metal structure at the resonance, inducing a strong optical force and allowing a single particle trapping with a diameter less than 100 nm. The device turns out very useful for novel biomedical applications, such as proteomics and oncology.

Abstract

This paper reports the numerical and experimental results of a high-Q silica-onsilicon spiral resonator to be used in microoptical gyroscopes having a potential resolution 2 waveguiding spiral cavity as sensing element for gyro applications is given, and results of its optical characterization are provided. Quality factor, finesse, free spectral range, and thermal stability have been measured, clearly showing the potential of the device for gyro applications. The effect of coupling tuning through micrometer scale heaters and the supported eigenstates of polarization have also been experimentally investigated. The thermal stabilization of the silica chip is realized using a thermoelectric cooler co-packaged with the resonant cavity. The Q-factor of the spiral exceeds 106, and the thermal drift of the resonance frequency is very low (

Abstract

A guided-wave chemical sensor for the detection of environmental pollutants or biochemical substances has been designed. The sensor is based on an asymmetric directional coupler employing slot optical waveguides. The use of a nanometer guiding structure where optical mode is confined in a low-index region permits a very compact sensor (device area about 1200 μm2) to be realized, having the minimum detectable refractive index change as low as 10-5. Silicon-on-Insulator technology has been assumed in sensor design and a very accurate modelling procedure based on Finite Element Method and Coupled Mode Theory has been pointed out. Sensor design and optimization have allowed a very good trade-off between device length and sensitivity. Expected device sensitivity to glucose concentration change in an aqueous solution is of the order of 0.1 g/L.

Abstract

The technique of nuclear emulsions for high-energy physics experiments is being revived, thanks to the remarkable progress in measurement automation achieved in the past years. The present paper describes the features and performances of the European Scanning System, a last-generation automatic microscope working at a scanning speed of 20 cm 2 / h . The system has been developed in the framework of the OPERA experiment, designed to unambigously detect ν μ → ν τ oscillations in nuclear emulsions.

Abstract

The final oscillation analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. Reconstruction algorithms of data extracted by electronic detectors were improved and the data recorded in the emulsion target were analysed by new automated scanning systems, allowing the use of a new method for event reconstruction in emulsion. CHORUS has applied these new techniques to the sample of 1996-1997 events for which no muons were observed in the electronic detectors. Combining the new sample with the data analysed in previous papers, the overall sensitivity of the experiment to the ?? appearance is thus improved. In a two-neutrino mixing scheme, a 90% C.L. upper limit of sin2 2 ?µ ? < 4.4 × 10-4 is set for large ? m2, improving by a factor 1.5 the previously published CHORUS result. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The WA95/CHORUS experiment at CERN is a dedicated nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillation search experiment. Using the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS accelerator, with an exposure of 2.4 X 10(19) protons on the target, this experiment will explore the domain of small mixing angles down to sin(2) 2 theta(mu tau) approximate to 3 X 10(-4) for mass differences Delta m(2) > 1 eV(2), more than one order of magnitude better than the current limits. The conceptual design of the CHORUS experiment and data on the detector performances are reported.

Abstract

The ability to confine light at the nanoscale continues to excite the research community, with the ratio between quality factor Q and volume V, i.e., the Q/V ratio, being the key figure of merit. In order to achieve strong light-matter interaction, however, it is important to confine a lot of energy in the resonant cavity mode. Here, we demonstrate a novel cavity design that combines a photonic crystal nanobeam cavity with a plasmonic bowtie antenna. The nanobeam cavity is optimised for a good match with the antenna and provides a Q of 1700 and a transmission of 90%. Combined with the bowtie, the hybrid photonic-plasmonic cavity achieves a Q of 800 and a transmission of 20%, both of which remarkable achievements for a hybrid cavity. The ultra-high Q/V of the hybrid cavity is of order of 106 (λ/n)−3, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art of photonic resonant cavities. Based on the high Q/V and the high transmission, we demonstrate the strong efficiency of the hybrid cavity as a nanotweezer for optical trapping. We show that a stable trapping condition can be achieved for a single 200 nm Au bead for a duration of several minutes (ttrap > 5 min) and with very low optical power (Pin = 190 μW).

Recent results from the CERN Omega spectrometer on the enhancement of strange and multiply strange particle production in nucleus-nucleus with respect to proton-nucleus collisions are summarized. In particular, the new data from the WA97 experiment on Ω, Ξ and Λ production in PbPb and p-Pb collisions are presented and discussed.

Abstract

Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for ντ charged current interactions followed by the τ lepton decay into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for νμ→ντ oscillation. A sample of 6844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the selection criteria, no τ− candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for ντ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36 182 events with an identified muon), a 90% C.L. limit on the mixing angle sin22θμτ

Abstract

A measurement of ?c+ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a subsample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector, exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in A+ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of 27 GeV, the product ?(?c+)/?(CC) × BR(?c+ › 3p) was measured to be (0.37 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.02(syst)) × 10-2, while the values of (1.54 ± 0.35(stat) ± 0.18(syst)) × 10-2 and of 0.24 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.04(syst) were obtained for ?(?c+)/?(CC) and BR(?c+ › 3p), respectively. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

We present a theoretical study of guided-wave acoustooptic (AO) Bragg cells produced by a single surface acoustic wave (SAW) in PE:LiNbO/sub 3//LiNbO/sub 3/- and ZnO/GaAs/AlGaAs-based structures. A rigorous modeling of the SAW propagation in multilayered structures has been used and the analysis of the AO interaction has been performed by using a generalized multimode formulation of the coupled-mode theory. High-performance configurations, particularly advantageous in wide-band optical communication and signal processing applications are presented.

Abstract

In this paper, we present a new accurate numerical method, named leaky mode propagation method, to analyze the radiation loss in grating-assisted codirectional couplers. The complex propagation constant and electromagnetic field distribution of the normal modes are evaluated by using a space harmonic field expansion derived from the Floquet theorem. In order to prove the accuracy of our method, a comparison between our results and those calculated by the most used method, i.e., the transfer matrix method, is carried out in terms of power attenuation coefficient and total radiation loss. Quantitative and qualitative discrepancies between the two methods are widely discussed. In particular, an oscillatory variation of radiation loss with grating depth and gap thickness in contrast to the monotonic behavior predicted by the transfer matrix method has been found. >

Abstract

The coherent production of 3π systems by charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei is studied in the bubble chamber BEBC exposed to the CERN SPS wide band beam. The coherent signal is attributed mainly to (ρπ) production, where the (ρπ) system is either non-resonant or comes from the decay of a1 mesons. The kinematical variables and the total cross section are compared with the predictions of the meson dominance model. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

The Chorus experiment, which aims at a search for v(mu) --> v(tau) oscillations using the neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS, has successfully taken data in 1994 and 1995. The detection technique will be discussed and the performances of the apparatus as well as a status report will be given.

Abstract

We report on a search for associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions in the CHORUS experiment, based on the visual observation of charmed-particle decays. The search differs from those carried out so far in which the production of cc has been inferred from measurements of events with two or three muons in the final state, resulting from the decay of charmed hadrons. One event with a double charm-decay topology has been found and a corresponding background of 0.04 events has been evaluated. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract

During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the Wide Band Neutrino Beam from the CERN-SPS. About 170 000 neutrino interactions were successfully located in the emulsion. Improvements in the automatic emulsion scanning systems and application of different criteria allowed the sample of located events to be used for studies of charm production. We present a measurement of the production rate of D 0 mesons based on a sample of 25 693 located v μ charged-current (CC) interactions analysed so far. After reconstruction of the event topology in the vertex region, 283 D 0 decays were observed with an estimated background of 9.2 K 0 and Λ decays. The ratio of cross-section of D 0 production and v μ CC interactions is found to be (1.99 ± 0.13(stat.) ± 0.17(syst.)) × 10 -2 at 27 GeV average v μ energy. © 2002 Elsevier Science B. V. Abstract

During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the CERN-SPS Wide Band Neutrino Beam. The improvements of the past few years in the automatic emulsion scanning systems allowed a sample of events located in emulsion to be used for studies of charm production. Based on a sample of 56172vμu charged-current interactions analysed so far, we find a value of Bμ = 0.093 ± 0.009(stat.) ± 0.009(syst.) for the semi-leptonic branching fraction of charm hadrons. The result for events with visible energy larger than 30 GeV, Bμ = 0.102 ± 0.016(stat.) ± 0.010(syst.), can be combined with the existing measurements of the dimuon rate to yield a value of 0.219 ± 0.022 for the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element \Vcd\. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

$K^{0}_{s}$, $\Lambda$, $\Xi$, $\Omega$ and negative particle yields and transverse mass spectra have been measured at central rapidity in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at 158 $A$ GeV/$c$. The yields in Pb-Pb interactions % are presented as a function of the collision centrality and compared with those obtained from p-Pb collisions. Strangeness enhancement in Pb-Pb relative to p-Pb collisions increases with the strangeness content of the particle. Going from p-Pb to Pb-Pb, the strange particle yields increase faster than linearly with the number of participants $N_{part}$ up to $N_{part} \approx 100$, thereafter the increase becomes %linear with $N_{part}$. Yields are studied as a function of the number of nucleons participating in the collision $N_{part}$, which is estimated with the Glauber model. From p-Pb to Pb-Pb collisions the particle yields per participant increase substantially. The enhancement is more pronounced for multistrange particles, and exceeds an order of magnitude for the $\Omega$. For a number of participants, $N_{part}$, greater than $100$, however, all yields per participant appear to be constant.

Abstract

The series of experiments (WA85, WA94 and WA97) at the Omega spectrometer at CERN SPS have systematically studied the production of different strange particles. Strangeness enhancements at central rapidities have been reported by WA85 and WA94 in S-W and SS with respect to p-A collisions. For the investigation of PbPb interactions in the WA97 experiment a new detector suitable for high particle densities, the Pixel Tracking Chamber, has been developed based on silicon pixel detectors. The results on production ratios and cross sections of Λ, Λ , Ξ − , Ξ + , Ω − and Ω + detected by this experiment are presented. A significant enhancement of the Ω over Ξ ratio is observed when comparing p-Pb to PbPb data (a factor of about 3).

Abstract

Λ, Ξ and Ω yields and transverse mass spectra have been measured in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c. Abstract

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for ν μ → ν τ oscillation, has been successlly constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract

WA97 is designed to study strange and multi-strange baryon and anti-baryon production in 160 A GeV c PbPb collisions at the SPS with a telescope of silicon microdetectors. Four planes of silicon pixel detectors were successfully employed during the 1994 Pb run. A total of 60M central PbPb events were collected. We describe the experimental setup and report on some preliminary results from the off-line analysis.

An emulsion-counter hybrid set-up to detect charmed particle decays in samples of triggered 32 S-nucleus central interactions is described. A new tracking technique with two emulsion tapes was developed and used successfully.

Abstract

Results from the HELIOS External Spectrometer on kaon production in 200 GeV/A S + W and p + W collisions are presented. The Kπ ratios are compared with results from a lower beam energy and are found to be remarkably similar. Evidence for secondary production of K+ by meson-baryon rescattering is reviewed. Our results at y = 1.0–1.5 are compared with neutral strange particle results at midrapidity.

Abstract

Inclusive photonp⊥ spectra were measured with 200 GeV/u proton,16O and32S beams on W and Pt targets, using a conversion method. The measurement of charged pions in the same apparatus allows a comparison of the γ data with the expected γ's from hadronic decays π0, η, η', ω). In all data sets, no deviation from the expected shape is observed in the range of 0.1 0.1 GeV/c andp⊥>0.6 GeV/c.

Abstract

A beam dump experiment has been performed at CERN in Gargamelle using the neutrino facility to look for penetrating particles produced either directly in the beam interaction or by prompt decay of new particles. A total of 32 interactions with a visible energy greater than 10 GeV has been found, classified, aftercorrections, into 18 charged current ν μ or ν μ , 5.1 neutral current and 8.9 ν e or ν e charged current events. An excess of ν e events remains after all subtractions from any established sources. Results are presented in terms of the product of the cross section and the leptonic decay branching ratio of the possible source.

Abstract

Charged-current neutrino interactions have been analysed in a sample of pictures from BEBC equipped with a TST. Using a method independent of both the neutrino flux and nuclear interaction corrections, the ratio R= σn/σp has been measured. The result is R=1.98±0.19 for the ratio of total cross sections. Abstract

In this paper we present a study of the reaction π − d → π − π − π + d at 9 GeV/ c . The mass spectra are in fair agreement with the predictions of a reggeized pion-exchange Deck model. However, the s -channel azimuthal angular distribution indicates a ϱ-exchange Deck contribution. The results of the partial-wave analysis of the (3 π ) − system are compared with those obtained in a hydrogen target: the J P = 2 + contribution is very small (at most 1.5 ± 1.2)% in our data, which are dominated by J P = 1 + for low mass, whereas the J P = 0 − , 1 + , 2 − have comparable importance in the higher mass region.

Abstract

Using BEBC equipped with a hydrogen-filled neon-surrounded track-sensitive target, the charged current cross sections and structure functions of hydrogen and neon targets traversed by the same neutrinos and antineutrinos are compared directly. The measured total cross-section ratios between hydrogen and neon allow precise total cross-section values for hydrogen to be inferred. Using this normalization, the ν and ν hydrogen data are combined and the quark distributions in free nucleons, parametrised as functions of ξ, are extracted. This free-nucleon parametrisation is then compared directly with the neon data in order to measure nuclear effects such as those recently reported by the EMC collaboration. In the reaction π−d→π−π−ppS at 9 GeV/c the pπ− mass spectrum exhibits, beyond a broad enhancement near the threshold, a production of N∗ 1520 and N∗ 1690. The production mechanism is studied and the difference in dσ/dt between the threshold enhancement and the isobars seems to be well accounted by the variation of the slope versus mass.

Abstract

The average multiplicities of charged hadrons and of π+, π− and π0 mesons, produced in\(\bar v\)Ne and νNe charged current interactions in the forward and backward hemispheres of theW±-nucleon center of mass system, are studied with data from BEBC. The dependence of the multiplicities on the hadronic mass (W) and on the laboratory rapidity (yLab) and the energy fraction (z) of the pion is also investigated. Special care is taken to determine the π0 multiplicity accurately. The ratio of average π multiplicities\(\frac{{2\left\langle {n_{\pi ^O } } \right\rangle }}{{[\left\langle {n_{\pi ^ + } } \right\rangle + \left\langle {n_{\pi ^ - } } \right\rangle ]}}\) is consistent with 1. In the backward hemisphere\(\left\langle {n_{\pi ^O } } \right\rangle \) is positively correlated with the charged multiplicity. This correlation, as well as differences in multiplicities between\(\mathop v\limits^{( - )} \) and\(\mathop v\limits^{( - )} \),\(\mathop v\limits^{( - )} \) scattering, is attributed to reinteractions inside the neon nucleus of the hadrons produced in the initial\(\mathop v\limits^{( - )} \) interaction.

Abstract

A study is presented of μe events from an exposure of BEBC, filed with an heavyH 2/Ne mixture, to a wide band antineutrino beam at the CERN SPS. The promptμ + e − rate, based on the observation of 45 events withp μ>4 GeV/c andp e>0.8 GeV/c, is found to be 0.31±0.05±0.02%, in agreement with previous determinations made on much smaller statistics. The differential kinematical variables characterizing the events and the content of strange particles are as expected for the production of charmed hadrons which subsequently decay semi-leptonically. An upper limit of 2.0±10−4 at 90% C.L. is given for the production rate of promptμ + e + events. No evidence is found for a significant production of Beauty hadrons.

Abstract

Evidence for charmed baryon “elastic” production is found in a sample of 55 000 charged-current neutrino interactions in the bubble chamber Gargamelle exposed to the SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The product of the average cross section times the branching ratio into modes including a Λ 0 or a K 0 p system is found to be α · B =(14.3 ± 7.4) × 10 −40 cm 2 for ν+n reactions and α · B −40 cm 2 (90% CL) for ν+p reactions.

Abstract

A study is presented of dimuon events from an exposure of BEBC to a wide band ν beam from the CERN SPS. These data double the available statistics on ν induced dilepton events observed in bubble chambers. The relative production rate and V0 yield have been measured and found to agree with previous experiments. The analysis of several kinematical variables shows that the gros features of the data agree with the predictions of the GIM model. Abstract

We have studied the I =2, ππ scattering using the classical Chew-Low extrapolation method. Results are given on the cross sections and the phase shifts δ 0 2 , δ 2 2 and δ 4 2 up to 2.2. GeV. δ 0 2 values are -7.8 ∓ 3.0° at the K o mass, -15. ∓ 1.5° at the ϱ mass and -29. ∓ 2.2° of the f o mass. Above the f o mass | δ 0 2 | decreases.
