Abstract

Scyliorhinus canicula, also known as small-spotted catshark, is an elasmobranch worldwide distributed and in some areas of Mediterranean basin represents the most abundant elasmobranches species. This species is extensively fished and marketed throughout Europe, however despite its economic relevance, the conservation status, the biology and pathology of this elasmobranchs species are poorly investigated. Goal of this study was to investigate the metazoan fauna ofS. caniculacaught in the Mediterranean Sea. During the study period a total of 86 specimens ofS. caniculawere caught and examined.Of the 86 examinedS. canicula,81 (94.2%) tested positive for parasites presence. Two parasitic taxa were identified, the nematodeProleptus obtusus(93%) and the cestodeEutetrarhynchus ruficollis(2.3%). The high prevalence ofP. obtususobserved in the present study is similar to those observed in Ireland, United Kingdom and Spain. Noteworthy, for the first time the cestodeE. ruficolliswas retrieved in specimens ofS. canicula.

Abstract

While there are several analytical models dedicated to vertical insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) there is virtually no reliable model for lateral IGBTs (LIGBTs). LIGBTs are increasingly popular in smart power and power integrated circuits, especially in those applications where high voltage (e.g., 600 V) and high current capability (e.g., 30 A/[cm.sup.2]) are required. In this paper, we report for the first time a complete analytical model for the LIGBT based on semiconductor physics with very few fitting parameters. The model is implemented in the widely available circuit simulator PSpice. The model consistently describes the current and voltage waveforms for all loading conditions. The model is assessed against finite element device simulations and experimental results. Abstract

The effect of localized lifetime control technique on the static and dynamic behavior of a power P-i-N diode is investigated in this paper. Mixed mode device circuit simulations are used in order to analyze the effect of the width and position of a reduced lifetime region on the diode. The simulations show that the optimal position for the low-lifetime region is at the beginning of the base region on the anode side, while the optimal width of the low-lifetime region depends on the amount of lifetime reduction. The local lifetime control design technique is shown to be effective in reducing the turn-off time and increasing diode softness with a little worsening of on-state voltage drop. It is shown that the tradeoff curve obtained by diodes using local lifetime control is better than the one achieved with lifetime killing in the whole epilayer region. Abstract

Abstract Background This study was aimed at investigating the distribution of a Cercopithifilaria sp. sensu Otranto et al., 2011 with dermal microfilariae recently identified in a dog from Sicily (Italy). A large epidemiological survey was conducted by examining skin samples (n = 917) and ticks (n = 890) collected from dogs at different time points in Italy, central Spain and eastern Greece. Results The overall prevalence of Cercopithifilaria sp. in the sampled animal populations was 13.9% and 10.5% by microscopy of skin sediments and by PCR on skin samples, respectively. Up to 21.6% and 45.5% of dogs in Spain were positive by microscopical examination and by PCR. Cumulative incidence rates ranging from 7.7% to 13.9% were estimated in dogs from two sites in Italy. A low level of agreement between the two diagnostic tests (microscopical examination and PCR) was recorded in sites where samples were processed in parallel. Infestation rate as determined by tick dissection (from 5.2% to 16.7%) was higher than that detected by PCR (from 0% to 3.9%); tick infestation was significantly associated with Cercopithifilaria sp. infestation in dogs from two out of four sites. Developing larvae found in ticks were morphometrically studied and as many as 1469 larvae were found in a single tick. Conclusions Our data suggest that, in addition to the most common species of filarioids known to infest dogs (i.e., Dirofilaria immitis, Dirofilaria repens and Acanthocheilonema reconditum), Cercopithifilaria sp. with dermal microfilariae should be considered due to its widespread distribution in southern Europe and high frequency in tick-exposed dogs.

50. Larval survival of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus lungworm in cat litters.

Abstract

Objectives: The dehydrating power of cat litters may reduce the vitality of first-stage larvae (L1s) of feline lungworms, limiting copromicroscopical diagnosis. This study assessed the effect of the most commonly used cat litters on Aelurostrongylus abstrusus L1 survival. Methods: Four types of cat litters were used: clumpling clay (group A); non-clumpling clay (group B); silica crystals (group C); and biodegradable (group D). A control group without litter (group E) was also included. On study day 0 (T0), L1s were obtained by the Baermann–Wetzel technique from the faeces of a naturally infected cat and ~100 larvae were injected in each of the 20 lungworm larvae-free faecal samples (~2 g each). Thereafter, four faecal samples per group were transferred into plastic cups containing the four different types of cat litters, or into empty cups (group E). The survival of L1s was assessed in each group after 3 (T3), 6 (T6), 12 (T12) and 24 (T24) h, using the Baermann–Wetzel technique. Results: A decreasing trend of L1 survival was observed in all groups, with highest significant values at T0 compared with T3, T6, T12 and T24 (P <0.001). However, at T24, a significantly higher number (P <0.05) of L1s was extracted from faeces of the control group compared with the four groups with cat litters. Conclusions and relevance: This study demonstrates how the survival of A abstrusus L1s, and therefore diagnosis, may be negatively influenced by the litter. The effect is time dependent, with a reduction in the number of vital larvae according to the type of litter, over time. False-negative results may be obtained, especially in cases of low parasitic load or when the sample is collected many hours after the emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
