Since they became observable, neuron morphologies have been informally compared with biological trees but they are studied by distinct communities, neuroscientists, and ecologists. The apparent structural similarity suggests there may be common quantitative rules and constraints. However, there are also reasons to believe they should be different. For example, while the environments of trees may be relatively simple, neurons are constructed by a complex iterative program where synapses are made and pruned. This complexity may make neurons less self-similar than trees. Here we test this hypothesis by comparing the features of segmented sub-trees with those of the whole tree. We indeed find more self-similarity within actual trees than neurons. At the same time, we find that many other features are somewhat comparable across the two. Investigation of shapes and behaviors promises new ways of conceptualizing the form-function link.

In this paper, a hardware-optimized approach to emotion recognition based on the efficient brain-inspired hyperdimensional computing (HDC) paradigm is proposed. Emotion recognition provides valuable information for human-computer interactions, however the large number of input channels (>200) and modalities (>3) involved in emotion recognition are significantly expensive from a memory perspective. To address this, methods for memory reduction and optimization are proposed, including a novel approach that takes advantage of the combinatorial nature of the encoding process, and an elementary cellular automaton. HDC with early sensor fusion is implemented alongside the proposed techniques achieving two-class multi-modal classification accuracies of >76% for valence and >73% for arousal on the multi-modal AMIGOS and DEAP datasets, almost always better than state of the art. The required vector storage is seamlessly reduced by 98% and the frequency of vector requests by at least 1/5. The results demonstrate the potential of efficient hyperdimensional computing for low-power, multi-channeled emotion recognition tasks.

The free energy plays a fundamental role in descriptions of many systems in continuum physics. Notably, in multiphysics applications, it encodes thermodynamic coupling between different fields. It thereby gives rise to driving forces on the dynamics of interaction between the constituent phenomena. In mechano-chemically interacting materials systems, even consideration of only compositions, order parameters and strains can render the free energy to be reasonably high-dimensional. In proposing the free energy as a paradigm for scale bridging, we have previously exploited neural networks for their representation of such high-dimensional functions. Specifically, we have developed an integrable deep neural network (IDNN) that can be trained to free energy derivative data obtained from atomic scale models and statistical mechanics, then analytically integrated to recover a free energy density function. The motivation comes from the statistical mechanics formalism, in which certain free energy derivatives are accessible for control of the system, rather than the free energy itself. Our current work combines the IDNN with an active learning workflow to improve sampling of the free energy derivative data in a high-dimensional input space. Treated as input-output maps, machine learning accommodates role reversals between independent and dependent quantities as the mathematical descriptions change with scale bridging. As a prototypical system we focus on Ni-Al. Phase field simulations using the resulting IDNN representation for the free energy density of Ni-Al demonstrate that the appropriate physics of the material have been learned. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the most complete treatment of scale bridging, using the free energy for a practical materials system, that starts with electronic structure calculations and proceeds through statistical mechanics to continuum physics.

The generalized stacking fault energy is a key ingredient to mesoscale models of dislocations. Here we develop an approach to quantify the dependence of generalized stacking fault energies on the degree of chemical disorder in multicomponent alloys. We introduce the notion of a "configurationally-resolved planar fault" (CRPF) energy and extend the cluster expansion method from alloy theory to express the CRPF as a function of chemical occupation variables of sites surrounding the fault. We apply the approach to explore the composition and temperature dependence of the unstable stacking fault energy (USF) in binary Mo-Nb alloys. First-principles calculations are used to parameterize a formation energy and CRPF cluster expansion. Monte Carlo simulations show that the distribution of USF energies is significantly affected by chemical composition and temperature. The formalism can be applied to any multicomponent alloy and will enable the development of rigorous models for deformation mechanisms in high-entropy alloys.

Structural phase transitions as a function of temperature dictate the structure--functionality relationships in many technologically important materials. Harmonic Hamiltonians have proven successful in predicting the vibrational properties of many materials. However, they are inadequate for modeling structural phase transitions in crystals with potential energy surfaces that are either strongly anharmonic or no\ n-convex with respect to collective atomic displacements or homogeneous strains. In this paper we develop a framework to express highly anharmonic first-principles potential energy surfaces as polynomials of collective cluster deformati\ ons. We further adapt the approach to a nonlinear extension of the cluster expansion formalism through the use of an artificial neural net model. The machine learning models are trained on a large database of first-principles calculations and are shown to reproduce the potential energy surface with l\ ow error.

Free energies play a central role in many descriptions of equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of solids. Continuum partial differential equations (PDEs) of atomic transport, phase transformations and mechanics often rely on first and second derivatives of a free energy function. The stability, accuracy and robustness of numerical methods to solve these PDEs are sensitive to the particular functional representations of the free energy. In this communication we investigate the influence of different representations of thermodynamic data on phase field computations of diffusion and two-phase reactions in the solid state. First-principles statistical mechanics methods were used to generate realistic free energy data for HCP titanium with interstitially dissolved oxygen. While Redlich-Kister polynomials have formed the mainstay of thermodynamic descriptions of multi-component solids, they require high order terms to fit oscillations in chemical potentials around phase transitions. Here we demonstrate that high fidelity fits to rapidly fluctuating free energy functions are obtained with spline functions. Spline functions that are many degrees lower than Redlich-Kister polynomials provide equal or superior fits to chemical potential data and, when used in phase field computations, result in solution times approaching an order of magnitude speed up relative to the use of Redlich-Kister polynomials.
