An experiment was conducted at HA RP. Ranchi during 2004-05 to study the amount of intra-plant variation in different fruit quality parameters as influenced by sample size and method of sampling in litchi cv. Shahi. Fully mature randomly collected litchi fruits of different sample sizes (T, =5 fruits/sample. T1 = JO fruits per sample, T1 = 15 fruits per sample, T, = 20fruits per sample andTj=25 fruits per sample) and sampling · types {T6=composite sample consisting of two set of 5 fruits each, T,=composite sample consisting of two set of 10 fruits each, T8= composite sample consisting of two set of 15 fruits each. T9 = composite sample consisting of three set of 5 fruits each, T10 = composite sample consisting of three set of I 0 fruits each and T11=composite sample consisting of four set of 5 fruits each) were analyzed for different quality parameters like fruit weight. TSS, total sugar and tit ratable acidity. Significant differences among the treatments were observed in the values of average fruit weight and ti/ratable acidity. An experiment was laid out during 1982 to identify most suitable mango variety amongst 20 important commercial varieties from different parts of thecountry (Krishna Bhog, Jardalu, Himsagar, Swarnarckha and Fazali from eastern India, Mankurad, Mulgoa, Vanraj, Kesar and Fernandin from Western India, Bombay Green, Dashehari, Langra, Maldah and Chausa from Northern India, Bangalora, Alphanso, Neelam, Mallika and Benisan from south India) for commercial cultivation in the eastern plateau and hill region. Keeping this view, the fruit quality (Medium sized fruits with high TSS) and yield the variety Himsagar was found to be mostpromising for commercial cultivation for fresh fruit purposes whereas cultivar like Bangalora can suitable be grown in the region particularly to cater to the newly upcoming mango processing industries in the region. Investigations were undertaken to develop an understanding of the flushing and panicle emergence process in litchi plants under sub-humid subtropical conditions of Eastern India, The intraplant variation in flushing and shoot growth pattern was found to influence the overall floriferousness of the litchi plants. All the shoots with second flush emerging during August and the third flush emerging during November were found to bear panicle in the month of February. A higher shoot girth and larger number of leaves per unit shoot length in the second flush was found to be crucial for flower bud differentiation. Cessation of growth of second flush before the emergence of third flush was found to result in panicle emergence. The carbohydrate content of previous.£eason flush appeared to be contributing towards the emergence of third flush and ultimately the panicle as the content was found to decrease during the third flushing. The phenol content of all the flushes was found to increase during the initiation of new flushes. Observations on changes in content soluble proteins, total free amino acids, proline, phenylalanine, alanine, tryptophane and iso-leucine during different flushings have also been recorded. A field study was conducted at Central Horticultural Experiment Station (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar, India, during 2007-2013 in a new mango orchard of the variety 'Arka Neelachal Kesri' at 5m x 5m spacing, to conserve rain-water and to enhance soil moisture availability during dry periods for augmenting plant growth and fruit production. Among the four in situ rain-water harvesting techniques (cup-and-plate, half-moon, full-moon, and trench) evaluated in combination with three types of mulch (no mulch, inorganic mulch, and organic mulch), the cup-and-plate system resulted in maximum annual increment in vegetative growth and fruit yield (4.67kg/plant), while, organic (paddy straw) and inorganic (black polythene, 100μ thickness) mulches improved vegetative growth, fruit yield and TSS in fruit significantly over no mulch.
