El documento analiza el impacto ambiental de la UPV en función de los valores obtenidos para los indicadores ambientales en el año 2023, así como el grado de cumplimiento de los objetivos ambientales planteados para el año, el estado de cumplimiento de los requisitos legales y otros requisitos, los resultados de la auditoría ambiental interna llevada a cabo en 2023 y la eficacia de las acciones de comunicación realizadas a lo largo del año. Finalmente se detallan las oportunidades de mejora detectadas

Tagoro is one of the few submarine volcanoes in the world that has been monitored since its early eruptive stage in 2011 to present day. After six multidisciplinary oceanographic cruises conducted between 2014 and 2023 to gather a comprehensive dataset of georeferenced video-imagery and in situ measurements of hydrothermal flow velocities and hydrothermal fluid samples, we provide a robust characterization of the ongoing hydrothermal fluid velocity, heat flux, and nutrient release, along with an accurate delimitation of the hydrothermal field area. Our results reveal that Tagoro hydrothermal system extends from the main hydrothermal crater up to the summit, covering an area of 7600 m2. This hydrothermal field comprises thousands of small individual vents, displaying diverse morphologies such as crevices and delicate chimney-like structures, irregularly scattered across the dominant diffuse venting surface. Hydrothermal fluid temperatures and velocities at the substratum level reveal a clustered spatial distribution, ranging from 21.0 to 33.3 °C and 1.6–26.8 cm min−1, respectively. Furthermore, our findings indicate a discernible correlation between hydrothermal fluid temperature and vent density, while significant differences were observed between velocities from diffuse and focused areas. Additionally, heat fluxes exceed 200 MW across the entire active region, with heat flux values ranging from 6.06 to 146.87 kW m−2 and dissolve inorganic nutrient concentrations exhibit significant enrichments, comparable to the magnitude of important nutrient sources in the area as upwelling systems or mesoscale structures.

Se describe el comportamiento ambiental de la UPV a lo largo del año 2023 analizando los datos ofrecidos por los principales indicadores ambientales. Se presenta también el grado de cumplimiento de los requisitos legales aplicables y de los objetivos ambientales planteados por la institución para el año. Incluye información adicional sobre las campañas de sensibilización realizadas y el impacto de la gestión ambiental de la UPV en la sociedad.

[Abstract] Performance of activities of daily living is fundamental in supporting participation across school, home and community environments and it is a high priority for parents because the lack of them is considered very disabling. Children with hemiparesis often experience restrictions in their participation. The aim of this study is to understand how limitations in the use of the more affected arm influence daily activities of children with hemiparesis, analyzing the needs and barriers perceived by families. 15 caregivers of children with hemiparesis aged 3-7 years participated in this qualitative study using online semi-structured individual interviews. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, codified and analyzed thematically with Atlas.ti. The following main thematic categories were drawn from the data analysis: limitations of spontaneous use and impact on daily life activities, child and family strategies to use the arm during routines and most purposeful activities and use of domestic technology. Bimanual tasks are reduced by a learning-non-used phenomenon as a common child strategy. Families encourage children to use the more affected arm by mainly verbal instructions. They are satisfied with their performance because of their medical condition but they would like to have more strategies to achieve better outcomes. Key barrier identified was child´s frustration when comparing with peers. Children enjoy domestic technology as a unimanual activity, but its use is often restricted by parents. Next phases will focus on studying new strategies to address child and families´ needs and to diminish the impact of the non-use of the more affected arm in bimanual activities during daily life.

For the first time, four dedicated hydrographic cruises—one in each season—took place in 2015 around the Canary Islands to determine the seasonality of the flows at the eastern boundary of the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre. The Canary Current (CC) is the eastern boundary current of the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre and links the Azores Current with the North Equatorial Current. The 2015 estimations show that the CC has a seasonal behavior in its path and strength, flowing on its easternmost position in winter (3.4 ± 0.3 Sv), through the Canary Islands in spring (2.1 ± 0.7 Sv) and summer (2.0 ± 0.6 Sv) and on its westernmost position in fall (3.2 ± 0.4 Sv). At the Lanzarote Passage (LP), the dominant flow is southward except in fall, where a northward transport is observed at the surface (1.1 ± 0.3 Sv) and intermediate (1.3 ± 0.2 Sv) layers. Combining all the available transport estimations, a historical composite observational seasonal cycle is constructed which fits the 2015 seasonal cycle. Hence, a solid seasonal cycle is constructed supported by all the available observations in the area. The LP seasonal cycle and its seasonal amplitude match the seasonal cycle and amplitude of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) measured by the RAPID-MOCHA data array. These results indicate that the seasonal cycle of the AMOC of the RAPID-MOCHA data array is driven by the dynamics of the eastern boundary current system.

El tráfico ilegal de especies está clasificado como la tercera actividad delictiva más lucrativa y representa uno de los mayores peligros para la biodiversidad. Además, el comercio ilegal de vida silvestre puede aumentar la propagación de parásitos en todo el mundo, provocando la aparición de enfermedades que afectan a la fauna silvestre, los animales domésticos y los humanos. El orden Psittaciformes presenta la mayor proporción de especies en peligro de extinción entre todas las aves del mundo y es uno de los taxones más traficados en el comercio de mascotas. Sin embargo, la influencia del comercio ilegal de aves silvestres en la introducción de patógenos exóticos está poco investigada. Aquí examinamos la prevalencia y la diversidad genética de los parásitos hemosporidios en periquitos de alas amarillas (Brotogeris versicolorus) comercializados ilegalmente en la Amazonía peruana. El 18,5% de los periquitos estaban infectados por Plasmodium relictum GRW04, un parásito altamente invasor que provoca graves efectos negativos en el fitness de sus hospedadores e incluso la extinción de la avifauna nativa cuando se establece fuera de su área de distribución natural. Además, las aves infectadas con malaria tuvieron una peor condición corporal que las no infectados, lo que revela los efectos negativos de esta especie de malaria. Estos resultados resaltan que el comercio ilegal de fauna silvestre puede suponer un riesgo de brotes de enfermedades. Nuestros resultados también revelan conceptos epidemiológicos clave en la transmisión de enfermedades, como el papel de las especies de psitácidos poco estudiadas como reservorios naturales de haemosporidios. Estos hallazgos enfatizan la importancia las políticas y normativas que combatan el tráfico ilegal de vida silvestre y eviten la propagación de enfermedades.

The Spanish Institute of Oceanography has realized nineteen oceanographic cruises in order to monitor the geomorphological changes during the submarine eruption of the Tagoro volcano and later evolution. The major geomorphological features were achieved fundamentally by the use of Multibeam EM710 echosounder data. Eruption was characterized by two main phases, the first one alternate stages of vertical growth and denudation by development of basal and southern flank collapses of the main edifice took place; the second phase was characterized by a fissure growth with a NNW-SSE trend. The eruption produced a main volcanic edifice rising from 400 to 88 m water depth. The edifice consists of four attached cones extended and at least fifteen emission vents. This edifice has a quasi-circular base and its final morphology was modulated by the activity of emission vents during the second phase which produced a NNW-SSE elongated summit line. Both vertical growth and instability phases were conditioned by preexistent southwestwards gradient of the seafloor slope and its initial location into a gully on the southern submarine island flank. In the proximal area, morphology is also characterized in by four ridges that correspond to semi-buried residual scars of different collapse phases. On the SW flank an apron of mixed lavas, pyroclastic and debris flows were deposited along more than 5 km length. These deposits were channeled throughout the previous gully and three parts are differentiated: proximal apron from the cone to an intermediate ravine located at 2.5 km away from the base of the main edifice where its maximum thickness occur in an accumulation front, the intermediated ravine and the distal apron fan deposits from the mouth of the ravine to 1800 m depth. The shallow Tagoro submarine volcano monitoring represents a unique opportunity not only for improving our sparse understanding of submarine volcanic processes in specific scientific fields as physical and chemical oceanography or marine geology but also its interactions over the marine biology in one of the richest marine ecosystems in Europe. This chapter aims to summarize the most relevant physical–chemical, geological and biological changes that occurred in the marine ecosystem of El Hierro island, at the Marine Reserve Punta de La Restinga—El Mar de Las Calmas, due to the genesis of the new underwater volcano Tagoro (27º37′07″N–017º59′28″W) in October 2011. During the first six months of the eruption, extreme physical–chemical perturbations caused by this event, comprising thermal increase from up to + 18.8 °C, water acidification with a pH decrease of 2.9 units, deoxygenation to anoxic levels and extremely high metal enrichment among others, resulted in significant and dramatic alterations of the marine ecosystem. After March 2012, once the eruptive phase was finished, the new submarine volcano entered an active hydrothermal phase involving the release of heat with smaller but still significant and important thermal anomalies of up to + 2.55 °C around the craters, density decrease of − 1.43 kg m−3, pH decrease of − 1.25 units, and high concentrations of metals and inorganic nutrients similar to upwelling zones. These enrichments are still active up to date, producing clear signs of marine recovery not only in the benthonic strata but also in the whole water column compared with pre-eruptive data. Since its eruption ten years ago, an unprecedented monitoring effort has turned into the longest and most complete multidisciplinary time-series for the study of a shallow submarine volcano, with the realization of 31 oceanographic multidisciplinary expeditions that systematically measure more than 40 different physical–chemical and biological variables. The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano started on September 19, 2021, on the island of La Palma, following a seismic swarm that affected the southern half of the island. The lava flowed westward and reached the coastline 8 days later in the area between Punta de la Bombilla and Tazacorte harbour. Four oceanographic cruises on board the research vessels Ramón Margalef and Ángeles Alvariño (Spanish Institute of Oceanography, IEO-CSIC) aimed to (i) characterizing the petrologic features prior to the arrival of the lava flows into the coastline, (ii) assessing the variations of the water-magma system when the lava flowed into the sea, and (iii) evaluating the main changes in the system after the end of the eruption. High-resolution bathymetric maps obtained with the multibeam echosounder EM710, combined with submarine high- definition ROV LIROPUS images and rocks samples collected from the sea bottom, showed that lava flowed down the shelf and upper slope as block (aa) and pillow lava flows, being conditioned by small gullies on the upper slope. Significant morphological changes have been defined in the subaerial northern and southern lava deltas (areas of 5,4 and 43 ha, respectively), and on a submarine area of ~30 ha. Volcanic material has been identified as far as 1.2 km from the original coastline at ~305 m seawater depth. Preliminary petrographic studies determine that the began as tephrites and later evolved intro basanites with olivine, pyroxene, amphibole and plagioclase phenocrysts within a glassy matrix with variable number of vesicles. The total volume of lava reaching the submarine environment is estimated of around 3 Mm3 with maximum thickness ca. 40 m along previous submarine slope gullies. Integrated with multidisciplinary analyses of the water column and ecosystem changes, this study will improve the knowledge of the magmatic evolution from depth up to eruption and will be useful for the risk management of future eruptive events.

On September 2021 a fissure eruption occurred and the Cumbre Vieja volcano situated on the Canary Island of La Palma, resulting in the expulsion of a substantial amount of lava that flowed westward reaching the coastline 8 days later. Our data indicate that lava flowed down the shelf and upper slope as block (aa) and pillow lava flows, channeled by small gullies on the upper slope. Significant morphological changes have been detected in the subaerial northern and southern lava deltas (areas of 43 and 5.4 ha, respectively), and on a submarine area of ~30 ha. New volcanic materials halve been identified as far as 1.2 km from the original coastline at ~305 mbsl.
