Xanthomonas species are major pathogens of plants and have been studied extensively. There is increasing recognition of the importance of non-pathogenic species within the same genus. With this came the need to understand the genomic and functional diversity of non-pathogenic Xanthomonas (NPX) at the species and strain level. This study reports isolation and investigation into the genomic diversity and variation in NPX isolates, chiefly Xanthomonas indica , a newly discovered NPX species from rice. The study establishes the relationship of X. indica strains within clade I of Xanthomonads with another NPX species, X. sontii , also associated with rice seeds. Identification of highly diverse strains, open-pan genome, and systematic hyper-variation at the lipopolysaccharide biosynthetic locus when compared to pathogenic Xanthomonas indicates the acquisition of new functions for adaptation. Furthermore, comparative genomics studies established the absence of major virulence genes such as type III secretion system and effectors, which are present in the pathogens, and the presence of a known bacterial-killing type IV secretion system (X-T4SS). The diverse non-pathogenic strains of X. indica and X. sontii were found to protect rice from bacterial leaf blight pathogen, X. oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). The absence of phenotype of an X-T4SS mutant suggests redundancy in the genetic basis of the mechanisms involved in the bioprotection function, which may include multiple genetic loci, such as putative bacteriocin-encoding gene clusters and involvement of other factors such as nutrient and niche competition apart from induction of innate immunity through shared microbial-associated molecular patterns. The rice-NPX community and its pathogenic counterpart can be a promising model for understanding plant-microbe-microbiome interaction studies.IMPORTANCEThe Xanthomonas group of bacteria is known for its characteristic lifestyle as a phytopathogen. However, the discovery of non-pathogenic Xanthomonas (NPX) species is a major shift in understanding this group of bacteria. Multi-strain, in-depth genomic, evolutionary and functional studies on each of these NPX species are still lacking. This study on diverse non-pathogenic strains provides novel insights into genome diversity, dynamics, and evolutionary trends of NPX species from rice microbiome apart from its relationship with other relatives that form a sub-clade. Interestingly, we also uncovered that NPX species protect rice from pathogenic Xanthomonas species. The plant protection property shows their importance as a part of a healthy plant microbiome. Furthermore, finding an open pan-genome and large-scale variation at lipopolysaccharide biosynthetic locus indicates a significant role of the NPX community in host adaptation. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are an indispensable part of our daily life. After being studied for a few decades, this field still has some room for improvement. In this regard, perovskite materials may take the leading role. In recent years, LEDs have become a most explored topic, owing to their various applications in photodetectors, solar cells, lasers, and so on. Noticeably, they exhibit significant characteristics in developing LEDs. The luminous efficiency of LEDs can be significantly enhanced by the combination of a poor illumination LED with low-dimensional perovskite. In 2014, the first perovskite-based LED was illuminated at room temperature. Furthermore, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites have enriched this field because of their optical and electronic properties and comparatively high stability in ambient conditions. Recent and relevant advancements in LEDs using low-dimensional perovskites including zero-dimensional to three-dimensional materials is reported. The major focus of this article is based on the 2D perovskites and their heterostructures (i.e., a combination of 2D perovskites with transition metal dichalcogenides, graphene, and hexagonal boron nitride). In comparison to 2D perovskites, heterostructures exhibit more potential for application in LEDs. Elephant apple, a fruit with numerous bioactive compounds, is rich in therapeutic qualities. However, its use in processed products is limited due to insufficient postharvest processing methods. To address this issue, an automatic core cutter (ACC) was developed to handle the hard nature of the fruit while cutting. The physical characteristics of the elephant apple were considered for designing and development of the cutter. The cutter is divided into four main sections, including a frame, collecting tray, movable coring unit, and cutting base with five fruit holders. The parts that directly contact the fruit are made of food-grade stainless steel. The efficiency of the cutter was analyzed based on cutting/coring capacity, machine efficiency, loss percentage, and other factors, and was compared to traditional cutting methods (TCM) and a foot-operated core cutter (FOCC). The ACC had an average cutting/coring capacity of 270-300 kg/h, which was significantly higher than TCM's capacity of 12-15 kg/h and comparable to FOCC's capacity of 115-130 kg/h. The ACC offered a higher sepal yield of 85.68 ± 1.80% compared to TCM's yield of 65.76 ± 1.35%, which was equivalent to the yield obtained by FOCC. Therefore, the ACC outperforms TCM in terms of quality, quantity, and stress associated and is superior to FOCC in terms of higher efficiency of machine and labor.

This study investigated the quality characteristics of pasteurized and thermosonicated bor-thekera (Garcinia pedunculata) juices (TSBTJs) during storage at 4 °C for 30 days. Various parameters, including pH, titratable acidity (TA), total soluble content (TSSs), antioxidant activity (AA), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), ascorbic acid content (AAC), cloudiness (CI) and browning indexes (BI), and microbial activity, were analyzed at regular intervals and compared with the quality parameters of fresh bor-thekera juice (FBTJ). A multi-layer artificial neural network (ANN) was employed to model and optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction of bor-thekera juice. The impacts of storage time, treatment time, and treatment temperature on the quality attributes were also explored. The TSBTJ demonstrated the maximum retention of nutritional attributes compared with the pasteurized bor-thekera juice (PBTJ). Additionally, the TSBTJ exhibited satisfactory results for microbiological activity, while the PBTJ showed the highest level of microbial inactivation. The designed ANN exhibited low mean squared error values and high R 2 values for the training, testing, validation, and overall datasets, indicating a strong relationship between the actual and predicted results. The optimal extraction parameters generated by the ANN included a treatment time of 30 min, a frequency of 44 kHz, and a temperature of 40 °C. In conclusion, thermosonicated juices, particularly the TSBTJ, demonstrated enhanced nutritional characteristics, positioning them as valuable reservoirs of bioactive components suitable for incorporation in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The study underscores the efficacy of ANN as a predictive tool for assessing bor-thekera juice extraction efficiency. Moreover, the use of thermosonication emerged as a promising alternative to traditional thermal pasteurization methods for bor-thekera juice preservation, mitigating quality deterioration while augmenting the functional attributes of the juice.

Background: A peer support intervention, called basic psychological support for people affected by neglected tropical diseases (BPS-N), was piloted in India to improve mental well-being and social participation and to reduce stigma among people with disabilities due to leprosy or lymphatic filariasis. Preintervention and postintervention assessments showed improvements in mental well-being and reductions in depression and stigma. This study aimed to further evaluate this intervention at approximately 2 mo after its completion., Methods: Scales were administered to 62 clients to measure stigma, depression, mental well-being and participation levels. Interviews with 13 clients and six peer supporters were conducted., Results: Stigma scores were significantly reduced at 2 mo postintervention compared with preintervention and postintervention. The improvement in mental well-being detected at immediate postintervention had not changed significantly 2 mo later. Depression levels were higher than at postintervention, but lower than at preintervention levels. No significant differences were found in median participation scores, but the number of clients with moderate and severe participation restrictions reduced significantly from postintervention to 2 mo follow-up. Qualitative results showed that clients received information about their condition and treatment, and that some experienced positive effects on their emotions and self-esteem., Conclusions: This study provides additional evidence on the proof of concept of BPS-N., Contexte: Une intervention de soutien par les pairs, appelée Soutien psychologique de base pour les personnes atteintes de maladies tropicales négligées (BPS-N), a été pilotée en Inde afin d'améliorer le bien-être mental et la participation sociale, et de réduire la stigmatisation, chez les personnes souffrant d'incapacités dues à la lèpre ou à la filariose lymphatique. Background: People with leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF)-related disabilities experience higher levels of poor mental well-being compared with the general community. Mental health services are often not available. This study was conducted to provide proof of concept that basic psychological support for people affected by neglected tropical diseases (BPS-N) can be given by peer supporters to reduce stigma, improve mental well-being and participation among clients., Methods: The BPS-N approach was tested in a quasi-experimental design using mixed methods. To provide psychological support using the BPS-N, peer supporters were selected and trained. They supported people with leprosy- and LF-related disabilities. Preintervention and postintervention, stigma, mental well-being, depression and participation were measured through standard scales within 4 wk of the intervention; differences were tested using standard tests of significance., Results: After 3 mo of intervention, the mean level of stigma had decreased (30.3 to 24, p<0.001); high mental well-being increased (0% to 13.3%, p<0.001); and moderate to severe depression decreased (88% to 47%, p<0.001). No significant change occurred in participation restrictions (87% to 92%, p=0.497)., Conclusions: Psychological peer support using the BPS-N guideline appears effective in reducing stigma and improving mental well-being and can be operationalised. Food by-products and waste are a boundless source of bioactives, nutraceuticals, and naturally occurring substances that are good for human health. In fact, a lot of by-products and wastes are generated by several food businesses. Therefore, waste management and by-product utilization are the most important aspects of the food sector. According to various studies, many bioactive compounds such as phenolics, carotenoids, and proteins can be recovered as feed stock from various industries' by-products and wastes using potential technologies. As a result, current trends are shifting attention to the sustainable valorisation of food sector waste management and by-products utilization. Thus, the circular economy principles have been applied to the field of food science. The aim of the circular economy is to ensure environmental protection and promote economic development while minimizing the environmental impact of food production. All of these aspects of the circular economy, at present, have become a challenging area of research for by-product valorisation as well. Hence, this review aims to highlight the emerging trends in the efficient utilization of food industry waste and by-products by focusing on innovative encapsulation techniques and controlled release mechanisms of bioactive compounds extracted from food industry waste and by-products. This review also aims to suggest future research directions, and addresses regulatory and toxicity considerations, by fostering knowledge dissemination and encouraging eco-friendly approaches within the food industry. This review reveals the role of encapsulation strategies for the effective utilization of bioactive compounds extracted from food industry waste and by-products. However, further research is needed to address regulatory and toxicity considerations of encapsulated bioactive compounds and health-related concerns.

This study explored the effect of thermosonication on the nutritional properties of lapsi ( Choerospondias axillaris ) fruit juice. The intent of the present investigation was to process lapsi fruit juice using both thermosonication and thermal pasteurisation and to compare the effects of these treatments on the juice's physicochemical, nutritional, and microbiological qualities. In order to maximise the retention of nutritional properties, enhance juice quality, and boost efficiency, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was also developed to forecast the optimisation of process parameters for the quality of lapsi fruit juice. This study establishes a novel experimental planning method using an ANN to multi-objectively optimise the extraction process and identify the ideal extraction conditions for thermosonication (50, 75, and 100% amplitude at 30, 40, and 50 °C for 15, 30, 45, and 60 min) to augment lapsi juice's nutritional and microbiological properties by improving certain attributes such as ascorbic acid (AA), antioxidant activity (AOA), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total plate count, and yeast and mould count (YMC). The maximum values for AA (71.80 ± 0.05 mg/100 mL), AOA (74.60 ± 0.28%), TPC (187.33 ± 0.03 mg gallic acid equivalents [GAE]/mL), TFC (127.27 ± 0.05 mg quercetin equivalents [QE]/mL), total plate count (not detected), and YMC were achieved in thermosonicated lapsi juice (TSLJ) under optimal conditions. For AA and TFC, the optimal conditions were 100% amplitude, 40 °C, and 45 min. For AOA and TPC, the optimal conditions were 100% amplitude, 40 °C, and 60 min, and for YMC, the optimal conditions were 100% amplitude, 50 °C, and 60 min. According to the findings, thermosonicated juices have improved nutritional properties, making them an excellent source of bioactive elements for use in both the food and pharmaceutical sectors. According to this study, ANN has been identified as a valuable tool for predicting the effectiveness of lapsi fruit juice extraction, and the application of thermosonication as an approach for lapsi juice preservation could be a potential successor to thermal pasteurisation. This approach can help to minimise or hinder quality degradation while improving the juice's functionality.

Elephant apple ( Dillenia indica L.) grows wild in Southeast Asia's forests, including in China, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Elephant apples are considered essential fruit crops because of their high nutritional value, which includes high levels of vitamin C, carbohydrates, fats, fibre, protein, minerals, and fatty acids. It is important to understand the nutritional value and health benefits of elephant apples in order to increase fruit intake in people's daily diets. The present review paper focuses on elephant apple's phytochemistry, bioactive compounds, therapeutic value, and medicinal capabilities for designing and developing a wide range of food formulations. Proteins, minerals, fats, crude fibre, carbohydrates, vitamin C, tannins, malic acid, and glucose are abundant in the leaves, bark, and fruit of the elephant apple. In addition to nutritional components, many phytochemicals found in elephant apples have been identified as bioactive compounds with a broad range of biological activities, the most prominent of which are antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Overall, elephant apple is a rich, natural source of bioactive compounds with potential applications in the production of value-added foods and nutraceuticals for disease prevention and management.

In this communication, we demonstrate uniaxial strain relaxation in monolayer (1L) MoS 2 transpires through cracks in both single and double-grain flakes. Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) grown 1L MoS 2 has been transferred onto polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrates for low (∼1%) and high (1-6%) strain measurements. Both Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy revealed strain relaxation via cracks in the strain regime of 4-6%. In situ optical micrographs show the formation of large micron-scale cracks along the strain axis and ex situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) images reveal the formation of smaller lateral cracks due to the strain relaxation. Finite element simulation has been employed to estimate the applied strain efficiency as well as to simulate the strain distribution for MoS 2 flakes. Mn-based oxides are widely investigated as electrode materials for electrochemical supercapacitors, because of their high specific capacitance in addition to the high abundance, low cost, and environmental friendliness of Mn. The pre-insertion of alkali metal ions is found to improve the capacitance properties of MnO 2 . While the capacitance properties of MnO 2 , Mn 2 O 3 , P2-Na 0.5 MnO 2 , and O3-NaMnO 2 etc. are reported, there is no report yet on the capacitive performance of P2-Na 2/3 MnO 2 , which has already been studied as a potential positive electrode material for Na-ion batteries. In this work, we have synthesized sodiated manganese oxide, P2-Na 2/3 MnO 2 by a hydrothermal method followed by annealing at a high temperature of about 900 °C for 12 h. For comparison, manganese oxide Mn 2 O 3 (without pre-sodiation) is synthesized by following the same method, but annealing at 400 °C. While P2-Na 2/3 MnO 2 exhibits a high specific capacitance of 234 F g -1 , Mn 2 O 3 can deliver only 115 F g -1 when cycled at 0.4 A g -1 in an aqueous electrolyte of 1.0 M Na 2 SO 4 in a three-electrode cell. An asymmetric supercapacitor Na 2/3 MnO 2 ‖AC is assembled, which can exhibit a SC of 37.7 F g -1 at 0.1 A g -1 with an energy density of 20.9 W h kg -1 , based on the total weight of Na 2/3 MnO 2 and AC with an operational voltage of 2.0 V and possesses excellent cycling stability. The growing population and healthy food demands have led to a rise in food waste generation, causing severe environmental and economic impacts. However, food waste (FW) can be converted into sustainable animal feed, reducing waste disposal and providing an alternative protein source for animals. The utilization of FW as animal feed presents a solution that not only tackles challenges pertaining to FW management and food security but also lessens the demand for the development of traditional feed, which is an endeavour that is both resource and environmentally intensive in nature. Moreover, this approach can also contribute to the circular economy by creating a closed-loop system that reduces the use of natural resources and minimizes environmental pollution. Therefore, this review discusses the characteristics and types of FW, as well as advanced treatment methods that can be used to recycle FW into high-quality animal feed and its limitations, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of using FW as animal feed. Finally, the review concludes that utilization of FW as animal feed can provide a sustainable solution for FW management, food security, preserving resources, reducing environmental impacts, and contributing to the circular bioeconomy.

The aim of this study was to compare the refractance window drying method (RWD) with the hot air oven drying (HD), vacuum drying (VD), and freeze-drying (FD) methods in order to analyze the outcomes of the qualitative properties of dragon fruit slices and pulp. Moreover, the impact of temperature on the phenolic content, antioxidant activity, color, and texture of the dragon fruit slices and pulp were studied. The results showed that the RWD samples exhibited a high nutritional quality in contrast to the other drying methods. The RWD method had a short drying time of 960 min to reach the final moisture content of 6.50% (dry basis), while the FD, VD, and HD methods had significantly higher drying times of 1320, 1200, and 1080 min, respectively, to reach the final moisture content. Higher values of TPC (182 mg GAE/100 g) and crude fiber (0.98%) were obtained in the RWD dragon fruit samples, indicating the potential of RWD to preserve the quality of dried samples. In conclusion, this study revealed that RWD provides an appropriate drying temperature as an alternative to freeze-drying. RWD may improve dragon fruit drying, adding value to the food industry.

In the past couple of years, cellulose has attracted a significant amount of attention and research interest due to the fact that it is the most abundant and renewable source of hydrogels. With increasing environmental issues and an emerging demand, researchers around the world are focusing on naturally produced hydrogels in particular due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and abundance. Hydrogels are three-dimensional (3D) networks created by chemically or physically crosslinking linear (or branching) hydrophilic polymer molecules. Hydrogels have a high capacity to absorb water and biological fluids. Although hydrogels have been widely used in food applications, the majority of them are not biodegradable. Because of their functional characteristics, cellulose-based hydrogels (CBHs) are currently utilized as an important factor for different aspects in the food industry. Cellulose-based hydrogels have been extensively studied in the fields of food packaging, functional food, food safety, and drug delivery due to their structural interchangeability and stimuli-responsive properties. This article addresses the sources of CBHs, types of cellulose, and preparation methods of the hydrogel as well as the most recent developments and uses of cellulose-based hydrogels in the food processing sector. In addition, information regarding the improvement of edible and functional CBHs was discussed, along with potential research opportunities and possibilities. Finally, CBHs could be effectively used in the industry of food processing for the aforementioned reasons.

Food hydrogels are effective materials of great interest to scientists because they are safe and beneficial to the environment. Hydrogels are widely used in the food industry due to their three-dimensional crosslinked networks. They have also attracted a considerable amount of attention because they can be used in many different ways in the food industry, for example, as fat replacers, target delivery vehicles, encapsulating agents, etc. Gels-particularly proteins and polysaccharides-have attracted the attention of food scientists due to their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, nutritional properties, and edibility. Thus, this review is focused on the nutritional importance, microstructure, mechanical characteristics, and food hydrogel applications of gels. This review also focuses on the structural configuration of hydrogels, which implies future potential applications in the food industry. The findings of this review confirm the application of different plant- and animal-based polysaccharide and protein sources as gelling agents. Gel network structure is improved by incorporating polysaccharides for encapsulation of bioactive compounds. Different hydrogel-based formulations are widely used for the encapsulation of bioactive compounds, food texture perception, risk monitoring, and food packaging applications.

In the present research study, the impact of digestion process on the levels of total phenols, flavonoids, vitamin C as well as anti-oxidant activity in freeze dried powders of mustard greens (MG) and roselle leaves (RL) was investigated. In addition, physicochemical and functional properties of MG and RL samples also evaluated. The digestion of freeze-dried vegetable powders was achieved through in vitro digestive procedure using various enzymes. From the study, it was observed that the digestion process increased the availability of phenols in both powders, where the digested vegetable powders possessed higher levels of total phenols and flavonoids. In contrast, the levels of vitamin C and anti-oxidant activity of vegetable powders (MG & RL) was found to be decreased minimally. Our research study suggests that in vitro digestion could enhance the TPC and TFC in mustard greens and roselle leaves. Therefore, MG and RL can be considered as a functional ingredient in the development of new products with better nutritional and functional characteristics. Negative differential resistance (NDR) is one of the nonlinear transport phenomena in which ionic current decreases with the increase in electromotive potential. Electro-osmosis, diffusio-osmosis, and surface charge density of pores are the driving forces for observing NDR in nanoscale ion transport. Here, we report electrodiffusioosmosis induced NDR using micro to millimeter size pores in a two-dimensional (2D) graphene-coated copper (Gr/Cu) membrane. Along with NDR, we also observed ion current rectification (ICR), in which there is preferential one-directional ion flow for equal and opposite potentials. The experimentally observed NDR effect has been validated by performing ion transport simulations using Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations and Navier-Stokes equations with the help of COMSOL Multiphysics considering salinity gradient across the membrane. Charge polarization induced electro-osmotic flow (EOF) dominates over diffusio-osmosis, causing the backflow of low concentration/conductivity solution into the pore, thereby causing NDR. Introduction: Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women. It results due to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is the preinvasive condition of cervical cancer. Various objective immunohistochemical (IHC) markers have been studied for cervical cancer. This study is aimed at studying the expression of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) IHC marker among preinvasive and invasive lesions of cervical cancer and its association with HPV infection., Methodology: This prospective study was conducted over a period of 1 year in a tertiary care hospital in central India, included 73 women suffering from CIN and cancer cervix. The expression of Bcl-2 and the presence of HPV genotypes were studied., Results: Out of 73 patients, 34 had cancer cervix, out of which 15 (44%) had Bcl-2 positivity, 24 had CIN 1, out of which 13 (54%) had Bcl-2 positivity, 10 had CIN 2, out of which 4 (40%) had Bcl-2 positivity and 5 had CIN 3, out of which 3 (60%) had Bcl-2 positivity. No significant difference was found in Bcl-2 positivity among CIN-1, CIN-2, CIN-3, and cancer cervix cases with a Chi-square value of 1.116 and P = 0.77. HPV positivity was found in 41 (56%) out of 73 patients where HPV 16 subtype was the most common (31.5%), followed by HPV 18 (13.7%). No significant association between HPV positivity and Bcl-2 positivity was found with P = 0.34., Conclusion: Bcl-2 IHC seems to have variable expression among CIN cases. Although its expression is low among invasive cancer cases when compared with preinvasive lesions, the difference is not significant. Kierlik et al. recently reported their study in this journal on the application of Mössbauer spectroscopy in identifying the iron-containing components in Upper Silesian topsoil as being under industrial anthropopressure. While the presented work is an excellent example of characterizing topsoil, a significant part of the study involving iron-bearing samples using 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy is erroneous. In the spectral fitting routine for the obtained Mössbauer spectra of the sample IIA (Figure 2; Table 3), the authors have erroneously fitted only a single sextet for magnetite, which is unacceptable. The line width obtained by them is also incorrectly mentioned in Figure 2, as evident from fitting D1 and D2 doublets as well as of magnetite tetrahedral and octahedral sites, making the relative abundances of individual phases meaningless. The inaccurate line width makes the authors fit the inadequate number of doublets necessary for the iron-bearing phases present in these samples, resulting in incorrect relative abundance for the other phases found in the materials, making the subsequent discussion not much useful.

Background: Modeling studies estimated severe impacts of potential service delivery disruptions due to COVID-19 pandemic on maternal and child nutrition outcomes. Although anecdotal evidence exists on disruptions, little is known about the actual state of service delivery at scale. We studied disruptions and restorations, challenges and adaptations in health and nutrition service delivery by frontline workers (FLWs) in India during COVID-19 in 2020., Methods: We conducted phone surveys with 5500 FLWs (among them 3118 Anganwadi Workers) in seven states between August-October 2020, asking about service delivery during April 2020 (T1) and in August-October (T2), and analyzed changes between T1 and T2. We also analyzed health systems administrative data from 704 districts on disruptions and restoration of services between pre-pandemic (December 2019, T0), T1 and T2., Results: In April 2020 (T1), village centers, fixed day events, child growth monitoring, and immunization were provided by <50% of FLWs in several states. Food supplementation was least disrupted. In T2, center-based services were restored by over a third in most states. Administrative data highlights geographic variability in both disruptions and restorations. Most districts had restored service delivery for pregnant women and children by T2 but had not yet reached T0 levels. Adaptations included home delivery (60 to 96%), coordinating with other FLWs (7 to 49%), and use of phones for counseling (~2 to 65%). Personal fears, long distances, limited personal protective equipment, and antagonistic behavior of beneficiaries were reported challenges., Conclusions: Services to mothers and children were disrupted during stringent lockdown but restored thereafter, albeit not to pre-pandemic levels. Rapid policy guidance and adaptations by FLWs enabled restoration but little remains known about uptake by client populations. Hot carrier solar cells hold promise for exceeding the Shockley-Queisser limit. Slow hot carrier cooling is one of the most intriguing properties of lead halide perovskites and distinguishes this class of materials from competing materials used in solar cells. Here we use the element selectivity of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy and density functional theory to uncover a previously hidden feature in the conduction band states, the σ-π energy splitting, and find that it is strongly influenced by the strength of electronic coupling between the A-cation and bromide-lead sublattice. Our finding provides an alternative mechanism to the commonly discussed polaronic screening and hot phonon bottleneck carrier cooling mechanisms. Our work emphasizes the optoelectronic role of the A-cation, provides a comprehensive view of A-cation effects in the crystal and electronic structures, and outlines a broadly applicable spectroscopic approach for assessing the impact of chemical alterations of the A-cation on perovskite electronic structure., (© 2022. Overactivation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling by accumulated β-catenin in the nucleus has been shown to play a crucial role in the etiology of cancer. Interaction of β-catenin with Transcription factor 4 (TCF4) is a key step for the activation of Wnt genes in response to upstream signals of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Hence, down regulation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling or targeting downstream events by selective β-catenin/TCF4 protein-protein interaction inhibitors could be a potential therapeutic strategy against such cancers. In this study structure-based drug design approach was followed to design novel 4,7-disubstituted 8-methoxyquinazoline-based derivatives which could act as potential cytotoxic agents inhibiting the β-catenin/TCF4 protein-protein interactions. Fifteen compounds possessing 4,7-disubstituted 8-methoxyquinazoline scaffold were synthesized. Cytotoxic potential of the synthesised derivatives were determined against constitutively activated β-catenin/TCF4 signaling pathway cancer cells (HCT116 and HepG2) using the sulforhodamine B assay. The most potent compound (18B) was selected for detailed biological evaluation. Cell morphology, Hoechst 33342 and Annexin V/PI staining were used to detect apoptosis, while inhibition of cell migration was assessed by in vitro wound healing assay against HCT116 and HepG2 cells. Effect on β-catenin/TCF mediated transcriptional activity was assessed by TOPFlash/FOPFlash assay, TCF4 and β-catenin protein expression by immunocytofluorescence, and Wnt target genes (like c-MYC and Cyclin D1) mRNA levels by RT-PCR against HCT116 cells. Cytotoxic potency of the most potential compound (18B) against primary human gallbladder cancer cells was also evaluated. The derivatives showed interactions with active site residues of β-catenin and were capable of hindering the TCF4 binding, thereby disrupting β-catenin/TCF4 interactions. Cytotoxic potencies (IC 50 ) of these derivatives ranged from 5.64 ± 0.68 to 23.18 ± 0.45 μM against HCT116 and HepG2 cells respectively. Compound (18B), the most potent compound among the series, induced apoptosis and inhibited cell migration against HCT116 and HepG2 cells. Mechanistic studies indicated that compound (18B) downregulated β-catenin/TCF4 signaling pathway, β-catenin and TCF4 protein expression, and mRNA levels of c-MYC andCyclin D1 in HCT116 cells and showed cytotoxicity against primary human gallbladder cancer cells with IC 50 value of 8.50 ± 1.44 μM. Thus, novel 4,7-disubstituted 8-methoxyquinazoline derivatives were identified as potential cytotoxic agents with potencies comparable to that of imatinib mesylate. Background: Dysregulation in Wnt/β-catenin signaling has been associated with the initiation and metastasis of cancer cells. Transcription factor 4 (TCF4) (also named as transcription factor 7-like 2) is a key transcriptional factor of the Wnt signaling pathway, which, when interact with β-catenin activates Wnt genes which plays an essential role in tumor development. The expression pattern and clinical significance of TCF4 in gallbladder cancer (GBC) are not yet established., Aims: This study was performed to assess the expression pattern of TCF4 in GBC tissue and attempted to correlate its expression with different clinicopathological parameters., Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on 33 surgically resected specimens of gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) and 12 cases of chronic cholecystitis (CC) as control, which had been confirmed from histology. The expression of TCF4 was performed by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry., Results: Relative mRNA expression levels of β-catenin and TCF4 in GBC tissues were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in CC samples. TCF4 protein expression was observed in 81.82% (27/33) GBC cases. Specifically, among GBC samples, 21.21% (7/33) was graded as strongly positive, 60.61% (20/33) graded as moderately positive, whereas 18.18% (6/33) graded as negative. All 12 CC samples graded as negative. Overall, TCF4 expression in GBC tissues was statistically significant over CC samples (P < 0.05). Moreover, we observed that TCF4 expression was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in high tumor grades than low grade, higher (P < 0.05) in Stage 2 and Stage 3 than Stage 1., Conclusion: The present study suggests that TCF4 may exert an oncogenic role in the progression of GBC and may serve as a new potential candidate biomarker for tumor progression, and it might be a potential therapeutic target against GBC., Competing Interests: None

Monolayer (ML) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been rigorously studied to comprehend their rich spin and valley physics, exceptional optical properties, and ability to open new avenues in fundamental research and technology. However, intricate analysis of twisted homobilayer (t-BL) systems is highly required due to the intriguing twist angle (t-angle)-dependent interlayer effects on optical and electrical properties. Here, we report the evolution of the interlayer effect on artificially stacked BL WSe 2 , grown using chemical vapor deposition (CVD), with t-angle in the range of 0 ≤ θ ≤ 60°. Systematic analyses based on Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies suggest intriguing deviations in the interlayer interactions, higher-energy exciton transitions (in the range of ∼1.6-1.7 eV), and stacking. In contrast to previous observations, we demonstrate a red shift in the PL spectra with t-angle. Density functional theory (DFT) is employed to understand the band-gap variations with t-angle. Exciton radiative lifetime has been estimated theoretically using temperature-dependent PL measurements, which shows an increase with t-angle that agrees with our experimental observations. Background: Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is a major underlying cause of mortality among children. Around one third of the world's acutely malnourished children live in India. The WHO recommends community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) for managing children with SAM. In India, different states are implementing community-based SAM treatment programme, hereinafter called CSAM, using varieties of locally produced nutrient dense food items with different nutrient compositions. The study will assess the effectiveness of these state specific CSAM interventions., Methods: The longitudinal quasi-experimental study will be undertaken in two purposively selected blocks of one district each in the four intervention states and one comparison state. From each state, 200 SAM children identified using weight-for-length/height z-score (WHZ) < - 3 criteria will be enrolled in the study. Their anthropometric data and skinfold thickness will be taken on admission, at sixth week and at discharge by trained field investigators. Other child details, incidence of morbidity and socio-economic details will be collected on admission. To assess food consumption pattern including consumption of locally produced nutrient dense food supplements, dietary assessment, using 24-h dietary recall will be conducted on admission, at sixth week and at discharge. In addition, body composition parameters will be assessed for a sub-set of children using bio-electrical impedance analysis on admission and at discharge to analyse changes in total body water, fat-free mass, and fat mass. Post discharge, all study participants will be followed up monthly until 6 months. Atleast 10% of the sample will be checked for quality assessment. The study's primary outcome is cure rate defined as children attaining WHZ ≥ -2. Secondary outcomes include mean weight gain, mean length of stay, body composition parameters, relapse and mortality rates. Additionally, process evaluation and cost effectiveness analysis will be conducted., Discussion: There is a shortage of robust evidence regarding the effectiveness of locally produced nutrient dense food supplements provided as part of the CSAM intervention in India. Objectives  Due to differences in the method of assay and population-specific factors, each laboratory needs to establish its own gestation-specific reference intervals (GRIs) for thyroid hormones. Materials and Methods  Three-hundred forty-one women with less than 14 weeks gestation were screened at a tertiary care hospital in Chhattisgarh, India. Serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4), and thyroid peroxidase antibody (anti-TPO) were measured using an ADVIA Centaur XP immunoassay. GRIs (2.5th and 97.5th percentiles) were determined for TSH and fT4. TSH and fT4 concentrations were converted to multiples of the median (MoM) values. Effect of maternal age, gestational age, and maternal weight was analyzed. Statistical Analysis  Quantitative variables were expressed as means and standard deviations (SD), and qualitative variables were expressed as frequencies and percentages. Normality of the data was checked using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Values that were normally distributed were expressed only as means and SD. Those that were not normally distributed were expressed as medians and interquartile range. For all statistical analysis, p  < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results  First-trimester GRI was 0.245 to 4.971 mIU/L for TSH, 10.2 to 18.9 pmol/L for fT4, and 27.0 to 56.89 kIU/L for anti-TPO. There was no significant difference in the mean serum TSH ( p  = 0.920), fT4 ( p  = 0.714), or anti-TPO ( p  = 0.754) values among women in 4 to 7th week and 7 to 14th week of gestation. The 1st and 99th centile MoMs were 0.03 and 4.09 for TSH and 0.66 and 1.39 for fT4. There was a significant positive correlation between the maternal weight and TSH MoM values ( p  = 0.027, r  = 0.120). Conclusion  These laboratory- and first-trimester-specific GRI for TSH and fT4 shall help in proper diagnosis and treatment of subclinical thyroid dysfunctions. Background: Evidence regarding impact of pre-ovulatory hormone levels on assisted reproductive technique (ART) outcomes in different ovarian response groups is sparse., Aims: The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the association between pre-ovulatory hormonal profile and ART outcomes in different ovarian responses., Setting and Design: This is a single-centre retrospective cohort study of 273 non-donor fresh ART cycles between January 2013 and June 2016., Materials and Methods: Data on clinical profile, basal and peak hormonal levels, characteristics of controlled ovarian stimulation and ART outcomes were collected. Progesterone elevation (PE) was defined as pre-ovulatory serum progesterone >1.5 ng/mL or progesterone to oestradiol ratio >1. The association between peak hormonal levels and ART outcomes in poor (≤4 oocytes retrieved), intermediate (5-13 oocytes retrieved) and high (≥14 oocytes retrieved) ovarian responders was analysed and compared., Statistical Analysis: Continuous and categorical variables were summarised as median (interquartile range) and percentages, respectively, and compared using Kruskal-Wallis H-test or Mann-Whitney U-test and Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test, respectively., Results: The incidence of PE, by both criteria and clinical pregnancy rates (35.7%, 36.8% and 18.6% in high, normal and poor responders, respectively; P = 0.073), was similar among the three response groups. Except fertilisation rates in normo-responders, PE did not influence ART outcomes in any response group. This group has previously reported the role of ascorbic acid (AA) as an antioxidant for survivability and ability to enhancing diazotrophic efficacy in Azotobacter chroococcum Avi2 under hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) stress. However, the present study showed the combined application of AA and Avi2 in drought-susceptible (IR64 and Naveen) and drought-tolerant (Ankit and Satyabhama) rice cultivars to determine their photosynthetic efficacy (chlorophyll fluorescence-imaging), antioxidants, and plant growth-promotion (PGP) under moisture deficit stress (MS, -60 kPa). The results indicated that combined application of AA and Avi2 significantly (p < 0.05) increased the total chlorophyll, relative water content, electrolytic leakage, super oxide dismutase, and catalase activities in all rice cultivars as compared to other MS treatments, whereas stress indicators like proline and H 2 O 2 contents were proportionally increased under MS and their concentration were normalized under combined application of AA and Avi2. Photochemical quenching, non-photochemical quenching, photosynthetic electron transport rate, and the effective quantum efficiency were found to be increased significantly (p < 0.05) in Avi2 + AA as compared to other MS treatments. Moreover, rice roots harbored significantly (p < 0.05) higher copy number of nifH gene in Avi2 + AA treatment followed by Avi2 compared to flooded control and other MS treatments. Combined application of AA and Avi2 also increased the grain yield significantly (p < 0.05) by 7.09 % and 3.92 % in drought-tolerant (Ankit and Satyabhama, respectively) and 31.70 % and 34.19 % in drought-susceptible (IR64 and Naveen, respectively) rice cultivars compared to MS treatment. Discovery of two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators (TIs) demonstrates tremendous potential in the field of thermoelectric since the last decade. Here, we have synthesized 2D TI, Sb 2 Te 3 of various thicknesses in the range 65-400 nm using mechanical exfoliation and studied temperature coefficient in the range 100-300 K using micro-Raman spectroscopy. The temperature dependence of the peak position and line width of phonon modes have been analyzed to determine the temperature coefficient, which is found to be in the order of 10 -2  cm -1 /K, and it decreases with a decrease in Sb 2 Te 3 thickness. Such low-temperature coefficient would favor to achieve a high figure of merit (ZT) and pave the way to use this material as an excellent candidate for thermoelectric materials. We have estimated the thermal conductivity of Sb 2 Te 3 flake with the thickness of 115 nm supported on 300-nm SiO 2 /Si substrate which is found to be ~ 10 W/m-K. The slightly higher thermal conductivity value suggests that the supporting substrate significantly affects the heat dissipation of the Sb 2 Te 3 flake.

Introduction: Cervical cancer which is preventable, occurs due to humanpapiloma virus infection and results in a preinvasive condition called cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN) before the development of cancer. Majority of the patients with CIN or early stage of cervical cancer present with symptoms such as abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding, and unhealthy looking cervix. Selectively screening these symptomatic patients, can detect more number of positive cases and also most effective screening technique for these selective patients can be advocated., Materials and Methods: All married women between 21 and 65 years attending gynecology outpatient department of a tertiary care health center in Central India and having unhealthy cervix or abnormal vaginal discharge were included. All women were subjected to Pap smear, visual inspection under acetic acid (VIA), visual inspection under Lugol's iodine (VILI) and colposcopy. Biopsy was taken in all cases. Diagnostic value of each screening method was determined in terms of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value., Results: Out of 352 patients, around 20% of them were found to have abnormal cytology. The sensitivity and specificity of Pap smear was found to be 34% and 94%. But colposcopy has high sensitivity and low specificity, i.e., 99% and 31%, respectively. On the other hand the sensitivity and specificity of VIA and VILI are comparable i.e., 65% and 45% and 64% and 48% respectively. Pap smear shows high positive predictive value among all, i.e., 85% and colposcopy shows 58% for the same., Conclusion: Pap smear carries low sensitivity but high positive predictive value. As compared to Pap smear, VIA and VILI are more sensitive and are of low cost. The effect of gastro intestinal digestion on total phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), radical scavenging activity (RSA) and vitamin C levels of apple ( Malus domestica ) pomace and a local variety of jujube ( Ziziphus mauritiana ) pomace was evaluated after drying at 110 °C for 3 h in a hot air oven. The physicochemical properties and functional properties of apple and jujube pomaces were also assessed. Prior to digestion, apple pomace displayed greater levels of TPC, RSA and vitamin C (17.30 ± 0.59 GAE/g DW, 81.16 ± 3.27%, 0.078 ± 0.01 g/L, respectively) in comparison with jujube pomace (16.90 ± 0.66 GAE/g DW, 54.65 ± 2.09%, 0.069 ± 0.01 g/L, respectively), whereas, TFC level was found to be higher in jujube pomace (19.22 ± 0.87 QE/g DW). After digestion, both samples showed an increase in TPC (56.17 ± 2.14 and 52.01 ± 2.18 GAE/g DW for apple and jujube pomaces) and TFC levels (48.45 ± 1.87 and 53.82 ± 2.34 QE/g DW for apple and jujube pomaces) and it was perceived almost 3 to 4 times higher than the TPC and TFC of the samples before digestion. But, RSA of the fruit pomaces were found to be affected by the in vitro digestion which was observed as 54.65 ± 2.09 and 81.16 ± 3.27% respectively for apple and jujube pomaces. Singlet fission is a spin-allowed exciton multiplication process in organic semiconductors that converts one spin-singlet exciton to two triplet excitons. It offers the potential to enhance solar energy conversion by circumventing the Shockley-Queisser limit on efficiency. We study the primary steps of singlet fission in a pentacene film by using a combination of TG and 2D electronic spectroscopy complemented by quantum chemical and nonadiabatic dynamics calculations. We show that the coherent vibrational dynamics induces the ultrafast transition from the singlet excited electronic state to the triplet-pair state via a degeneracy of potential energy surfaces, i.e., a multidimensional conical intersection. Significant vibronic coupling of the electronic wave packet to a few key intermolecular rocking modes in the low-frequency region connect the excited singlet and triplet-pair states. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of obesity and its relationship with subclinical hypothyroidism in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). To compare the clinico-biochemical parameters of obese and lean PCOS patients., Materials and Methods: A total of 287 women with PCOS were included in this study after consent. The demographic, anthropometry, clinical, and hormonal (thyroid-stimulating hormone [TSH] and total testosterone) parameters were recorded along with pelvic ultrasonography (USG) for all PCOS subjects. They were divided into lean (body mass index [BMI] between 18.5 and 22.9) and overweight (BMI ≥23), and the number of subclinical hypothyroid patients were calculated in each group. The clinico-biochemical parameters of both groups were compared., Results: The majority (61%) of our patients were overweight. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism between overweight and lean PCOS patients. Three bacteria namely Bacillus luciferensis K2, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens K12 and Bacillus subtilis BioCWB possessing plant growth promotion and biocontrol potential against phytopathogens and rice leaf folder were identified from organic soils of Sikkim, India. The results revealed significant higher production of phytohormones IAA (97.1 μg mL -1 ) and GA 3 (10.6 μg mL -1 ) was found in K2, whereas BioCWB had higher phosphate solubilization (570.0 μg mL -1 ) efficacy and also possessed nitrogen fixation ability (5.34 log copy number mL -1 culture). All these bacteria had higher antagonistic activities against phytopathogens viz. Rhizoctonia solani , Fusarium proliferatum , Athelia rolfsii and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and also had higher larvicidal activity against rice leaf folder Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenne) under in vitro conditions. Molecular insights into the antagonistic mechanisms of Bacillus strains deciphered the presence of several antimicrobial peptides (ericin, subtilin, surfactin, iturin, bacilysin, subtilosin, fengycin and bacillomycin), volatiles (dimethyl disulphide, methyl-Furan, acetic acid, Z-1,3-pentadiene and 3-hexyn-2-ol) and soluble metabolites (9-octadecenamide, E-15-heptadecenal, E-3-eicosene and 5-octadecene). Furthermore, liquid microbial inoculum prepared using the bacterial strains (K2, K12 and BioCWB) were evaluated under glass house (rice) and field condition (capsicum), which significantly enhanced plant growth in rice and yield in capsicum compared to control. The present study revealed the combination of Bacillus spp. (K2, K12 and BioCWB) can be used as bio-inoculants for improving agricultural production in Sikkim. We report phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) of a near-infrared electromagnetic field using room-temperature 85 Rb atoms possessing ground-state coherence. Our novelty is in achieving significant optical PSA by manipulating the intensity and phase of a frequency-separated microwave field. PSA is obtained by inducing a three-wave mixing nonlinear process utilising a three-level cyclic scheme in the D1 manifold. We achieve a near-ideal PSA with a gain of 7 dB over a range of 500 kHz bandwidth with very low pump-field intensities and with low optical depths. Such a hybrid, ground-state-coherence-assisted PSA is the first such demonstration using atomic ensembles.

Synthesis of high-quality graphene layers on insulating substrates is highly desirable for future graphene-based high-speed electronics. Besides the use of gaseous hydrocarbon sources, solid and liquid hydrocarbon sources have recently shown great promises for high-quality graphene growth. Here, I report chemical vapor deposition growth of mono- to few-layer graphene directly on SiO 2 substrate using ethanol as liquid hydrocarbon feedstock. The growth process of graphene has been systematically investigated as a function of annealing temperature as well as different seed layers. Interestingly, it was found that the carbon atoms produced by thermal decomposition of ethanol form sp 2 carbon network on SiO 2 surface thereby forming nanographene flakes via an intermediate carbon-based nanostructured state carbon nanotube. This work might pave the way to an understanding for economical and catalyst-free graphene growth compatible with current silicon-processing techniques, and it can be applied on a variety of insulating surfaces including quartz, sapphire, and fused silica.

Atomically thin layers of two-dimensional materials can be assembled in vertical stacks that are held together by relatively weak van der Waals forces, enabling coupling between monolayer crystals with incommensurate lattices and arbitrary mutual rotation 1,2 . Consequently, an overarching periodicity emerges in the local atomic registry of the constituent crystal structures, which is known as a moiré superlattice 3 . In graphene/hexagonal boron nitride structures 4 , the presence of a moiré superlattice can lead to the observation of electronic minibands 5-7 , whereas in twisted graphene bilayers its effects are enhanced by interlayer resonant conditions, resulting in a superconductor-insulator transition at magic twist angles 8 . Here, using semiconducting heterostructures assembled from incommensurate molybdenum diselenide (MoSe 2 ) and tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) monolayers, we demonstrate that excitonic bands can hybridize, resulting in a resonant enhancement of moiré superlattice effects. MoSe 2 and WS 2 were chosen for the near-degeneracy of their conduction-band edges, in order to promote the hybridization of intra- and interlayer excitons. Hybridization manifests through a pronounced exciton energy shift as a periodic function of the interlayer rotation angle, which occurs as hybridized excitons are formed by holes that reside in MoSe 2 binding to a twist-dependent superposition of electron states in the adjacent monolayers. For heterostructures in which the monolayer pairs are nearly aligned, resonant mixing of the electron states leads to pronounced effects of the geometrical moiré pattern of the heterostructure on the dispersion and optical spectra of the hybridized excitons. Our findings underpin strategies for band-structure engineering in semiconductor devices based on van der Waals heterostructures 9 .

In the race to find novel transparent conductors for next-generation optoelectronic devices, graphene is supposed to be one of the leading candidates, as it has the potential to satisfy all future requirements. However, the use of graphene as a truly transparent conductor remains a great challenge because its lowest sheet resistance demonstrated so far exceeds that of the commercially available indium tin oxide. The possible cause of low conductivity lies in its intrinsic growth process, which requires further exploration. In this work, I have approached this problem by controlling graphene nucleation during the chemical vapor deposition process as well as by adopting three distinct procedures, including bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide doping, post annealing, and flattening of graphene films. Additionally, van der Waals stacked graphene layers have been prepared to reduce the sheet resistance effectively. I have demonstrated an efficient and flexible transparent conductor with the extremely low sheet resistance of 40 Ω sq -1 , high transparency ( T r ∼90%), and high mechanical flexibility, making it suitable for electrode materials in future optoelectronic devices., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

This study examined the potency and efficacy of ascorbic acid (AA) in the management of depression-like behavior in diabetic rats. Diabetes mellitus was induced by single intraperitoneal injections of nicotinamide (120 mg/kg) and streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) administered 15 min apart. Diabetic (blood glucose ≥250 mg/dL) rats were subjected to intermittent foot-shocks to induce comorbid depression. Seven groups of diabetes comorbid depressed rats received vehicle (1 mL/kg) or AA (10, 25, 50, 100, 200, or 400 mg/kg) orally for eleven days. Three control groups namely- nondiabetic, diabetic, and depressed rats received the vehicles only. The potency (ED 50 ) and efficacy (E max ) of AA against immobility period, hypercorticosteronemia, adrenal hyperplasia, hyperglycemia, hypoinsulinemia, oxidative stress, and inflammatory response were estimated. AA administration caused a dose-dependent decrease (P < 0.05) in immobility period with maximum inhibition of 69% (efficacy) at 200 mg/kg and ED 50 of 14 mg/kg (potency). AA at 200 mg/kg produced the maximal reduction in hypercorticosteronemia (55.1%) and adrenal hyperplasia (52.6%) with ED 50 of 9.8 and 14.4 mg/kg, respectively. AA at 400 mg/kg produced the maximal reduction in hyperglycemia (35.5%), hypoinsulinemia (32.7%), and lipid peroxidation (82%) with ED 50 of 18.6, 13.7, and 20.7 mg/kg, respectively. Moreover, AA at 400 mg/kg produced the maximal increase in SOD content (83%), CAT activity (77.9%), and IL-10 level (63%) with ED 50 of 21.5, 21, and 21 mg/kg, respectively. In conclusion, the present results suggest that AA has therapeutic potential against diabetes comorbid depression but better regulation of hyperglycemia and hypoinsulinemia is required to achieve maximal benefits., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS. Background and Objectives: Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) has been a major public health challenge for the Indian subcontinent over many years. Our study was conducted in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh, an iodine deficiency disorders-endemic district, with the objective to estimate total goitre rate and iodine nutrition status., Methods and Study Design: A cross-sectional study with 30 cluster sampling was conducted between June to July 2016 among school-going children in the age group of 6-12 years. Ninety children from each school (30x90=2700) were selected for the assessment of Goitre. Total 540 salt samples and 270 urine samples were collected to estimate salt iodine content from their house-hold and urine iodine excretion (UIE) respectively. A total of 150 households and 30 shopkeepers were interviewed to understand the awareness level for salt iodization., Results: Goitre rate in Tikamgarh district was 1.9% with prevalence of grade I & II was 1.7% and 0.2% respectively. The median UIE level was 200 mcg/L. The 20% the population had iodine deficiency, 28.9% population had adequate iodine nutrition and 51.1% population had either more than adequate level of iodine. The 72.4% of the population consume adequately iodized salt (>=15 ppm)., Conclusions: Our study concludes that Tikamgarh district is non-endemic for IDDs against the earlier classification as an IDD-endemic district. About 20% population has 'iodine deficiency' and approximately 51.1% population has 'more than adequate iodine intake'. We recommend stringent programme monitoring, undertake periodic assessment of IDD and explore manifestations of excess iodine intake (>=300 mcg/L) such as Iodine-induced hyperthyroidism in future.

We demonstrated room temperature near infrared (NIR) region random lasing (RL) (800-950 nm), with a threshold of nearly 500 μW, in ∼200 nm thick MoS 2 /Au nanoparticles (NPs)/ZnO heterostructures using photoluminescence spectroscopy. The RL in the above system arises mainly due to the following three reasons: (1) enhanced multiple scattering because of Au/ZnO disordered structure, (2) exciton-plasmon coupling because of Au NPs, and (3) enhanced charge transfer from ZnO to thick MoS 2 flakes. RL has recently attracted tremendous interest because of its wide applications in the field of telecommunication, spectroscopy, and specifically in biomedical tissue imaging. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of Iodine Deficiency Disorders, and household consumption of adequately iodized salt in Damoh district, Madhya Pradesh in 2016., Methods: Cross-sectional study with cluster sampling method was used among school-going children. 30 clusters, each with 90 children were selected to access Total Goiter rate (TGR). 540 salt samples were collected to estimate salt iodine content from their household and 270 on the spot urine samples were collected to estimate Urine Iodine Excretion level., Results: TGR was 2.08%. The prevalence of iodine deficiency, adequate iodine nutrition, and either more than adequate or toxic level of Iodine was 26%, 28% and 46 %, respectively. 72.4% people were consuming adequately iodized salt., Conclusion: Damoh district is no more an endemic area for iodine deficiency. We recommend continuous monitoring to assess IDDs as well Iodine-induced toxicity in future.
