- Abstract
This document is the product of a stellarator community workshop, organized by the National Stellarator Coordinating Committee and referred to as Stellcon, that was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in February 2016, hosted by MIT. The workshop was widely advertised, and was attended by 40 scientists from 12 different institutions including national labs, universities and private industry, as well as a representative from the Department of Energy. The final section of this document describes areas of community wide consensus that were developed as a result of the discussions held at that workshop. Areas where further study would be helpful to generate a consensus path forward for the US stellarator program are also discussed. The program outlined in this document is directly responsive to many of the strategic priorities of FES as articulated in “Fusion Energy Sciences: A Ten-Year Perspective (2015–2025)” [1]. The natural disruption immunity of the stellarator directly addresses “Elimination of transient events that can be deleterious to toroidal fusion plasma confinement devices” an area of critical importance for the US fusion energy sciences enterprise over the next decade. Another critical area of research “Strengthening our partnerships with international research facilities,” is being significantly advanced on the W7-X stellarator in Germany and serves as a test-bed for development of successful international collaboration on ITER. This report also outlines how materials science as it relates to plasma and fusion sciences, another critical research area, can be carried out effectively in a stellarator. Additionally, significant advances along two of the Research Directions outlined in the report; “Burning Plasma Science: Foundations—Next-generation research capabilities”, and “Burning Plasma Science: Long pulse—Sustainment of Long-Pulse Plasma Equilibria” are proposed.

Fusion energy research has in the past 40 years focused primarily on the tokamak concept, but recent advances in plasma theory and computational power have led to renewed interest in stellarators. The largest and most sophisticated stellarator in the world, Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), has just started operation, with the aim to show that the earlier weaknesses of this concept have been addressed successfully, and that the intrinsic advantages of the concept persist, also at plasma parameters approaching those of a future fusion power plant. Here we show the first physics results, obtained before plasma operation: that the carefully tailored topology of nested magnetic surfaces needed for good confinement is realized, and that the measured deviations are smaller than one part in 100,000. This is a significant step forward in stellarator research, since it shows that the complicated and delicate magnetic topology can be created and verified with the required accuracy., Early stellarator designs suffered from high particle losses, an issue that can be addressed by optimization of the coils. Here the authors measure the magnetic field lines in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, confirming that the complicated design of the superconducting coils has been realized successfully.

- Abstract
This is a significant step forward in stellarator research, since it shows that the complicated and delicate magnetic topology can be created and verified with the required accuracy.

The National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX) was designed to test physics principles of an innovative stellarator design developed by Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Construction of some of the major components and subassemblies was completed, but the estimated cost and schedule for completing the project grew as the technical requirements and risks became better understood, leading to its cancellation in 2008. The project's risks stemmed from its technical challenges, primarily the complex component geometries and tight tolerances that were required. The initial baseline, which was established in 2004, was supported by a risk management plan and risk-based contingencies, both of which proved to be inadequate. Technical successes were achieved in the construction of challenging components and subassemblies, but cost and schedule growth was experienced. As part of an effort to improve project performance, a new risk management program was devised and implemented in 2007-2008. It led to a better understanding of project risks, a sounder basis for contingency estimates, and improved management tools. Although the risks were ultimately unacceptable to the sponsor, valuable lessons in risk management were learned through the experiences with the NCSX project. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Diagnosis and natural history of Ebstein's anomaly.

- Abstract
Thirty five cases of Ebstein's anomaly were diagnosed by cardiac catheter study or echocardiography between 1962 and 1984. The anomaly was an isolated abnormality in 27 patients; the remainder had additional heart lesions. Six patients have died and four of these had other cardiac lesions. Thirteen are currently symptom free. Twelve cases presented with cyanosis and heart murmur on the first day of life. Eight of these had associated thrill which is a rare finding in neonates. As pulmonary vascular resistance fell there was clinical improvement. This was assisted by oxygen treatment. Another two cases presented in the first week of life and 10 in the first decade with a murmur or supraventricular tachycardia. Eleven cases presented as adolescents or adults with a murmur, cardiomegaly, or cardiac symptoms. Three patients were seen initially in the sixth decade. Clinical diagnosis was correct in only one adult. Twenty five patients had cardiac catheterisation. Important arrhythmias occurred in 10 cases, and two required cardioversion. Difficulty was experienced in entering the pulmonary artery in 11 infants and children. Diagnosis at initial catheter study was incorrect in four patients. Echocardiograms were recorded in 29 cases. Earlier M mode measurements of time delay of tricuspid closure compared with mitral closure did not always lead to the correct diagnosis. Cross sectional studies gave good images of tricuspid leaflet displacement, its tethering, and the atrialised portion of the right ventricle and have facilitated the diagnosis of more cases in recent years. Echocardiography is the procedure of choice for diagnosis of Ebstein's anomaly. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
Oral tocainide and disopyramide were compared in a double-blind, crossover trial in 10 outpatients with stable ventricular premature beats (VPBs). Efficacy was assessed by suppression of VPB activity and reduction of VPB grade during an exercise test and an 18-h Holter recording. An estimate of variance of VPB activity was obtained from two separate placebo periods, and a 95% confidence limit for VPB suppression was calculated. During Holter recording, both drugs produced a significant reduction in VPB frequency and grade (p less than 0.05). During the exercise challenge, tocainide produced a reduction in VPB frequency and grade, but this did not reach statistical significance; VPB frequency was unaltered by disopyramide, but VPB grade was significantly reduced (p less than 0.01).
