We present a new evaluation of the negatively charged pion mass based on the simultaneous spectroscopy of pionic nitrogen and muonic oxygen transitions using a gaseous target composed by a N2/O2 mixture at 1.4 bar. We present the experimental set-up and the methods for deriving the pion mass value from the spatial separation from the 5g − 4f πN transition line and the 5g − 4f μO transition line used as reference. Moreover, we discuss the importance to use dilute targets in order to minimize the influence of additional spectral lines from the presence of remaining electrons during the radiative emission. The occurrence of possible satellite lines is investigated via hypothesis testing methods using the Bayes factor.

Goldblack deposits have been used as high-absorption coatings for thermal infrared detectors for a number of years, principally on large single, or few pixel detectors. We present a new technique that allows the benefits of goldblack to be applied to the current generation of small pixel silicon micromachined themed infrared detectors. Purpose: This study aimed to determine if standardized updates at specific perioperative events affect anxiety and satisfaction of the family members and if the length of surgical procedure affects the satisfaction with updates., Methods: This study was a randomized control trial. In the control group, surgeons communicated with the family only once near the completion of the procedure. In the intervention group, families received electronic updates at 3 significant perioperative events during the procedure. A postoperative survey rating family member satisfaction and anxiety levels, using a Likert scale of 0-5, was administered., Results: Mean level of overall satisfaction did not differ between groups (intervention: 4.68 ± 0.69 [95% CI: 4.50, 4.87]; control: 4.61 ± 0.78 [95% CI: 4.40, 4.82]; P=0.69). Mean anxiety levels were lower in the intervention group (2.48 ± 1.43 [2.10, 2.86]) than in the control group (3.12 ± 1.32 [2.77, 3.47]; P=0.01). Mean satisfaction with perioperative updates was higher in the intervention (4.48 ± 0.83 [4.26, 4.70]) versus control group (3.16 ± 1.89 [2.67, 3.65]; P=0.0001). For all subjects, there was positive correlation between procedure time and anxiety (Spearman's rho: 0.34; P=0.0002) and negative correlation between procedure time and overall satisfaction (Spearman's rho: -0.23; P=0.01)., Conclusions: Anxiety and satisfaction with perioperative updates were significantly improved by additional perioperative updates. Background: Following total knee and hip arthroplasty, patient progress can be assessed with patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and performance-based outcome measures (PBOMs). The American Joint Replacement Registry 2016 guide recommends collecting several measures, including Patient Reported Outcome Measure Information System Global, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Jr, and Hip Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Jr. This study aimed to assess the current and anticipated use of PROMs and PBOMs by New England physical therapists., Methods: An online survey was conducted in July and August of 2015 asking physical therapists in New England to rate their current and anticipated future use of PROMs and PBOMs in terms of clinical decision making associated with the treatment and care of patients after total hip and knee replacement., Results: There were 122 responses. The most often used and recommended PROMS were the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (99.2% and 97.5%, respectively) and Lower Extremity Function Scale (76.2% and 77.0%). There was significant variability in the use of different PBOMs, but the most often used and recommended were the Timed Up and Go (93.4% and 85.2%) and the Single Leg Balance Test (90.2% and 87.7%)., Conclusions: This study suggests that orthopaedic surgeons and physical therapists use different PROMs and PBOMs for postoperative assessment of total joint patients and highlights the need for more collaboration and consistency between these disciplines.

With increasing interest over the past decade in space-related remote sensing and communications using near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths, there is a need for radiation studies on NIR avalanche photodiodes (APDs), due to the high radiation environment in space. In this work, we present an experimental study of proton radiation effects on performance parameters of InAs APDs, whose sensitivity extends from visible light to ~3.5 μm. Three irradiation energies (10.0, 31.4, and 58.8 MeV) and four fluences (10 9 to 10 11 p/cm 2 ) were used. At the harshest irradiation condition (10.0 MeV energy and 10 11 p/cm 2 fluence) the APDs' avalanche gain and leakage current showed a measurable degradation. However, the responsivity of the APDs was unaffected under all conditions tested. Neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF1) is a multisystem disorder with very rare descriptions of hip instability. We report a case of a 37-year-old man with known NF1 and childhood-onset of left foot drop, who developed persistent left hip pain following a minor trauma. Physical examination revealed left-sided mild foot drop, hip abductor weakness, bilateral sensory loss in feet and an antalgic gait. Work-up revealed anterolateral subluxation of the left femoral head along with left hip plexiform neurofibroma (PN), dysplastic and degenerative changes, neurofibromatous neuropathy and chronic left L5 radiculopathy. Initial improvement after surgical resection of the PN was unsustained and followed by increasing pain and recurrent hip subluxation, prompting a total hip arthroplasty which resulted in marked improvement of symptoms. Our patient, unlike those in other reports, illustrates multiple aetiologies of hip dislocation in NF1 including local factors, lumbar radiculopathy and polyneuropathy, reinforcing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the management of such cases., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interest: None declared., (2016 BMJ Publishing Group Ltd.)
