1. Are giants in random digraphs `almost' local?

Abstract

Recently, the first author showed that the giant in random undirected graphs is `almost' local. This means that, under a necessary and sufficient condition, the limiting proportion of vertices in the giant converges in probability to the survival probability of the local limit. We extend this result to the setting of random digraphs, where connectivity patterns are significantly more subtle. For this, we identify the precise version of local convergence for digraphs that is needed. We also determine bounds on the number of strongly connected components, and calculate its asymptotics explicitly for locally tree-like digraphs, as well as for other locally converging digraph sequences under the `almost-local' condition for the strong giant. Abstract

In the article, we consider a question concerning the estimation of summatory function of the Fourier coefficients of Hecke eigenforms indexed by a sparse set of integers. In particular, we provide an estimate for the following sum; \begin{equation*} \begin{split} S(f, \mathcal{Q}; X ) &:= \sideset{}{^{\flat }}\sum_{n= \mathcal{Q}(\underline{x}) \le X \atop \gcd(n,N) =1 } \lambda_{f}(n), \end{split}\end{equation*} where $\flat$ means that sum runs over the square-free positive integers, $\lambda_{f}(n)$ denotes the normalised $n^{\rm th}$ Fourier coefficients of a Hecke eigenform $f$ of integral weight $k$ for the congruence subgroup $\Gamma_{0}(N)$ and $\mathcal{Q}$ is a primitive integral positive-definite binary quadratic forms of fixed discriminant $D<0$ with the class number $h(D)=1$. As a consequence, we determine the size, in terms of conductor of associated $L$-function, for the first sign change of Hecke eigenvalues indexed by the integers which are represented by $\mathcal{Q}$. Abstract

Orbiting low frequency antennas for radio astronomy (OLFAR) that capture cosmic signals in the frequency range below 30MHz could provide valuable insights on our Universe. These wireless swarms of satellites form a connectivity graph that allows data exchange between most pairs of satellites. Since this swarm acts as an interferometer, the aim is to compute the cross-correlations between most pairs of satellites. We propose a k-nearest-neighbour communication protocol, and investigate the minimum neighbourhood size of each satellite that ensures connectivity of at least 95% of the swarm. We describe the proportion of cross-correlations that can be computed in our method given an energy budget per satellite. Despite the method's apparent simplicity, it allows us to gain insight into the requirements for such satellite swarms. In particular, we give specific advice on the energy requirements to have sufficient coverage of the relevant baselines.

13. Connectivity of random graphs after centrality-based vertex removal

Abstract

Centrality measures aim to indicate who is important in a network. Various notions of `being important' give rise to different centrality measures. In this paper, we study how important the central vertices are for the connectivity structure of the network, by investigating how the removal of the most central vertices affects the number of connected components and the size of the giant component. We use local convergence techniques to identify the limiting number of connected components for locally converging graphs and centrality measures that depend on the vertex's neighborhood. For the size of the giant, we prove a general upper bound. For the matching lower bound, we specialize to the case of degree centrality on one of the most popular models in network science, the configuration model, for which we show that removal of the highest-degree vertices destroys the giant most., Comment: 31 pages

23. Revisiting the Open-Domain Question Answering Pipeline

Abstract

Open-domain question answering (QA) is the tasl of identifying answers to natural questions from a large corpus of documents. The typical open-domain QA system starts with information retrieval to select a subset of documents from the corpus, which are then processed by a machine reader to select the answer spans. This paper describes Mindstone, an open-domain QA system that consists of a new multi-stage pipeline that employs a traditional BM25-based information retriever, RM3-based neural relevance feedback, neural ranker, and a machine reading comprehension stage. This paper establishes a new baseline for end-to-end performance on question answering for Wikipedia/SQuAD dataset (EM=58.1, F1=65.8), with substantial gains over the previous state of the art (Yang et al., 2019b). We also show how the new pipeline enables the use of low-resolution labels, and can be easily tuned to meet various timing requirements.

Abstract

Given two pure representations of the absolute Galois group of an $\ell$-adic number field with coefficients in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p$ (with $\ell\neq p$), we show that the Frobenius-semisimplifications of the associated Weil--Deligne representations are twists of each other by an integral power of certain unramified character if they have equal normalized traces. This is an analogue of a recent result of Patankar and Rajan in the context of local Galois representations.

Abstract

Like many other crops, the cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is of hybrid origin and has a polyploid genome that contains essentially complete sets of chromosomes from two ancestral species. Here we report the genome sequence of peanut and show that after its polyploid origin, the genome has evolved through mobile-element activity, deletions and by the flow of genetic information between corresponding ancestral chromosomes (that is, homeologous recombination). Uniformity of patterns of homeologous recombination at the ends of chromosomes favors a single origin for cultivated peanut and its wild counterpart A. monticola. However, through much of the genome, homeologous recombination has created diversity. Using new polyploid hybrids made from the ancestral species, we show how this can generate phenotypic changes such as spontaneous changes in the color of the flowers. We suggest that diversity generated by these genetic mechanisms helped to favor the domestication of the polyploid A. hypogaea over other diploid Arachis species cultivated by humans.

Abstract

Characteristics of turbulent flow around a braided bar are much more complex as compared to the straight and meandering rivers. The impact of a mid-channel bar on the turbulent flow structure has been investigated in this research. A new dominance function [S.sub.i,H] is proposed in this study as a measure of the relative dominance of ejection and sweep events in turbulent flow structure. Occurrence of the kolk-boil phenomenon is observed due to interaction of ejection and sweep events. The kolk-boil phenomenon generates negative pressure gradients which result in suspension of bed sediment particles in the flow domain. The transition probability of bursting event movements is computed using the first Markov chain. A new parameter movement ratio is formulated in this study, which is found to faithfully reflect the fluvial processes of sedimentation and scouring on the channel bed. Acceleration of flow is seen to occur at adjoining regions close to the upstream end of the bar. Due to the presence of the bar, the flow area in its proximity decreases which has caused increment in the velocity at sections located near the upstream end of the mid-channel bar. For model runs with bars, a distinct bulge in the turbulent intensity graph is observed. The mid-channel bar effect is mainly discernible in the lower layers of flow. Les caracteristiques de l'ecoulement turbulent autour d'un banc anastomose sont beaucoup plus complexes que celles des rivieres droites et sinueuses. Dans le cadre de cette recherche, l'impact du banc median d'alluvionnement sur la structure de l'ecoulement turbulent a ete etudie. Une nouvelle fonction de dominance [S.sub.i,H] est proposee comme mesure de la dominance relative des evenements d'ejection et de balayage dans la structure de l'ecoulement turbulent. Le phenomene d'ebullition du << kolk >> est observe en raison de l'interaction des evenements d'ejection et de balayage. Le phenomene d'ebullition du kolk genere des gradients de pression negatifs qui entrainent la suspension de particules de sediments du lit dans le domaine d'ecoulement. La probabilite de transition des mouvements d'evenements d'eclatement est calculee a l'aide de la premiere chaine de Markov. Un nouveau parametre, soit le rapport de mouvement, est formule et s'avere refleter fidelement les processus fluviaux de sedimentation et d'affouillement sur le lit du canal. L'acceleration de l'ecoulement se produit dans les regions adjacentes pres de l'extremite en amont du banc. En raison de la presence du banc, la zone d'ecoulement dans sa proximite diminue, ce qui entraine une augmentation de la vitesse dans les sections situees pres de l'extremite amont du banc median d'alluvionnement. Pour les analyses de modele avec des bancs, un gonflement distinct dans le graphique d'intensite turbulente est observe. Abstract

Background: Inflammation, when associated with cancer, has been shown to correlate with a worse prognosis. Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) serve as markers of inflammation. This study aims to investigate the influence of pretreatment NLR, PLR, and MLR on treatment outcomes and their correlation with sarcopenia in patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (LA-HNSCC) undergoing definitive chemoradiotherapy. Method: In this retrospective study, 240 LA-HNSCC patients who received a radiotherapy dose of 70 Gy/35 fractions over 7 weeks in conjunction with chemotherapy were enrolled. Pretreatment NLR, PLR, and MLR were determined. Sarcopenia was evaluated by measuring skeletal muscle mass at the C3 level using radiotherapy planning computed tomography scans. The impact of NLR, PLR, and MLR on complete response rate and disease-free survival was calculated. The median followup duration for patients was 26 months. Results: Inflammatory markers were notably higher in elderly patients, females, and those with laryngeal primary tumours. Patients achieving a complete response exhibited lower values than those who did not. Patients with significant sarcopenia demonstrated elevated mean values of inflammatory markers. Patients with NLR<3, PLR<145, and MLR<0.4 experienced more favorable outcomes regarding complete response rate and disease-free survival. Conclusion: Inflammatory markers such as NLR, PLR, and MLR are independent prognostic factors in HNSCC patients. Elevated values are associated with sarcopenia and inferior treatment outcomes, indicative of more aggressive tumour behavior.
