Supervised field trial was conducted to study the dissipation pattern of fluopyram in rice plant after application of fluopyram 400 g/L SC(Velum Prime) as soil drenching at the time of sowing in nursery bed at X (500 g a.i. ha -1 ) and 1.25X (625.2 g a.i. ha -1 ) doses. Samples of rice plant were collected on 0, 1, 3, 7, 10, 15, and 20 days after transplanting. QuEChERS-based extraction method was validated and adopted to determine the residues of fluopyram in rice seedlings, whole rice grains (with husk), polished rice grain, husk, straw, and soil using LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry).The initial deposit of fluopyram in rice plant recorded were 0.27 and 0.41 mg kg -1 in X and 1.25X doses, respectively. Fluopyram residues dissipated following first-order kinetics with half-life of 2.53 and 2.57 days at X and 1.25X doses, respectively. Residues were detected in seedlings up to 15 days after transplanting and were at below LOQ in whole rice grains (with husk), polished rice grain, husk, straw, and soil collected at harvest. The work was based on N-(4-Aminobutyl)-N-ethylisoluminol (ABEI)-functionalized Fe-MIL-101 and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as sensing materials, and an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor was constructed for detecting acetamiprid. As a metal-organic framework (MOF) material, Fe-MIL-101, was renowned for its unique three-dimensional network structure and efficient catalytic capability. ABEI, a common ECL reagent, was widely applied. ABEI was introduced into the Fe-MIL-101 structure as a luminescence functionalization reagent to form Fe-MIL-101@ABEI. This approach avoided limitations on the loading capacity of luminescent reagents imposed by modification and encapsulation methods. With character of excellent catalytic activity and ease of bioconjugation, AuNPs offered significant advantages in biosensing. Leveraging the reductive properties of ABEI, AuNPs were reduced around Fe-MIL-101@ABEI, resulting in the modified luminescent functionalized material denoted as Fe-MIL-101@ABEI@AuNPs. An aptamer was employed as a recognition element and was modified accordingly. The aptamer was immobilized on Fe-MIL-101@ABEI@AuNPs through gold-sulfur (Au-S) bonds. After capturing acetamiprid, the aptamer induced a decrease in the ECL signal intensity within the ABEI-hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) system, enabling the quantitative detection of acetamiprid. Pyrethroid pesticides (PYRs) have found widespread application in agriculture for the protection of fruit and vegetable crops. Nonetheless, excessive usage or improper application may allow the residues to exceed the safe limits and pose a threat to consumer safety. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop efficient technologies for the elimination or trace detection of PYRs from vegetables. Here, a simple and efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) strategy was developed for the simultaneous purification and enrichment of five PYRs in vegetables, employing the magnetic covalent organic framework nanomaterial COF-SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 as an adsorbent. COF-SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 was prepared by a straightforward solvothermal method, using Fe 3 O 4 as a magnetic core and benzidine and 3,3,5,5-tetraaldehyde biphenyl as the two building units. COF-SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 could effectively capture the targeted PYRs by virtue of its abundant π-electron system and hydroxyl groups. The impact of various experimental parameters on the extraction efficiency was investigated to optimize the MSPE conditions, including the adsorbent amount, extraction time, elution solvent type and elution time. Subsequently, method validation was conducted under the optimal conditions in conjunction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Within the range of 5.00-100 μg·kg -1 (1.00-100 μg·kg -1 for bifenthrin and 2.5-100 μg·kg -1 for fenpropathrin), the five PYRs exhibited a strong linear relationship, with determination coefficients ranging from 0.9990 to 0.9997. The limits of detection (LODs) were 0.3-1.5 μg·kg -1 , and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.9-4.5 μg·kg -1 . The recoveries were 80.2-116.7% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 7.0%. Finally, COF-SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 , NH 2 -SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 and Fe 3 O 4 were compared as MSPE adsorbents for PYRs. The results indicated that COF-SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 was an efficient and rapid selective adsorbent for PYRs. This method holds promise for the determination of PYRs in real samples.

In order to achieve rapid detection of thiamethoxam residues in mango, cowpea and water, this study modified the screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to make a specific molecular imprinting sensor (Thiamethoxam-MIP/Au/rGO/SPCE) for thiamethoxam. An integrated smartphone platform was also built for thiamethoxam residue analysis. The performance of the complete system was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The system was then applied for the rapid determination of thiamethoxam residues in water, mango and cowpea samples. The results showed that the molecular sensor showed good linearity in the range 0.5-3.0 μmol/L of thiamethoxam. The detection limit of thiamethoxam was 0.5 μmol/L. Moreover, the sensor had good reproducibility and anti-interference performance. The average recovery rates of the pesticide residues in water, mango and cowpea samples were in the range of 90-110% with relative standard deviations < 5%. The rapid detection system for thiamethoxam residue constructed in this study was simple, reliable, reproducible and had strong anti-interference. It has broad application prospects in the field detection of thiamethoxam residue, and serves as a valuable reference for the further development of rapid detection technology of pesticide residues in the field of environment and food safety., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Extensive use of organophosphorus pesticides in agriculture leads to adverse effects to the environment and human health. Sample preparation is compulsory to enrich target analytes prior to detection as they often exist at trace levels and this step is critical as it determines the concentration of pollutants present in samples. The selection of a suitable extraction method is of great importance. The analytical performance of the extraction methods is influenced by the selection of sorbents as sorbents play a vital role in the sensitivity and selectivity of an analytical method. To date, numerous sorbent materials have been developed to cater to the needs of selective and sensitive pesticides' detection. Comprehensive details pertaining to extraction methods, developed sorbents, and analytical performance are provided. This review intended to provide a general overview on different extraction techniques and sorbents that have been developed in the last 10 years for organophosphorus pesticides' determinations in food and water samples.

Propolis is a resinous natural product collected by honeybees ( Apis mellifera and others) from tree exudates that has been widely used in folk medicine. The present study was carried out to investigate the fatty acid composition, chemical constituents, antioxidant, and xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activity of Jordanian propolis, collected from Al-Ghour, Jordan. The hexane extract of Jordanian propolis contained different fatty acids, which are reported for the first time by using GC-FID. The HPLC was carried out to identify important chemical constituents such as fatty acids, polyphenols and α-tocopherol. The antioxidant and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities were also monitored. The major fatty acid identified were palmitic acid (44.6%), oleic acid (18:1∆ 9 cis , 24.6%), arachidic acid (7.4%), stearic acid (5.4%), linoleic acid (18:2∆ 9-12 cis , 3.1%), caprylic acid (2.9%), lignoceric acid (2.6%), cis -11,14-eicosaldienoic acid (20:2∆ 11-14 cis , 2.4%), palmitoleic acid (1.5%), cis -11-eicosenoic acid (1.2%), α-linolenic acid (18:3∆ 9-12-15 cis , 1.1%), cis -13,16-docosadienoic acid (22:2∆ 13-16 cis , 1.0%), along with other fatty acids. The major chemical constituents identified using gradient HPLC-PDA analysis were pinocembrin (2.82%), chrysin (1.83%), luteolin-7- O -glucoside (1.23%), caffeic acid (1.12%), caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE, 0.79%), apigenin (0.54%), galangin (0.46%), and luteolin (0.30%); while the minor constituents were hesperidin, quercetin, rutin, and vanillic acid. The percentage of α-tocopherol was 2.01 µg/g of the lipid fraction of propolis. Antioxidant properties of the extracts were determined via DPPH radical scavenging. The DPPH radical scavenging activities (IC 50 ) of different extracts ranged from 6.13 to 60.5 µg/mL compared to ascorbic acid (1.21 µg/mL). The xanthine oxidase inhibition (IC 50 ) ranged from 75.11 to 250.74 µg/mL compared to allopurinol (0.38 µg/mL). The results indicate that the various flavonoids, phenolic compounds, α-tocopherol, and other constituents which are present in propolis are responsible for the antioxidant and xanthine oxidation inhibition activity. To evaluate the safety studies of propolis, the pesticide residues were also monitored by LC-MS-MS 4500 Q-Trap. Trace amounts of pesticide residue (ng/mL) were detected in the samples, which are far below the permissible limit as per international guidelines.

The changes in residual amounts of an insecticide (etofenprox) in processed rice cakes and cookies were investigated in this study. Test samples were sprayed with etofenprox during rice cultivation, and brown rice samples were dipped in a pesticide solution to investigate the effects of washing and processing. A multiresidue method for multiclass pesticides was employed for etofenprox analysis using a high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector setup. Etofenprox was not detected in polished rice that was processed into rice cakes and cookies. The etofenprox residue levels were 2.13 mg/kg in each processing stage of brown rice products that were dipped in 400 mg/kg etofenprox solutions. The residual amounts of etofenprox in washed/polished rice and rice flour obtained by grinding were 1.25 and 0.77 mg/kg, respectively. The residual levels were 0.38 mg/kg in rice cakes prepared by cooking rice flour in a steamer for 20 min (a decrease of 82.1% compared to that in polished rice), 0.47 mg/kg in rice cookies baked in an oven for 20 min (a decrease of 78.0%), and 0.21 mg/kg in fried rice cookies (a decrease of 90.2%). Ginseng extracts are rich in a variety of ginseng monomer saponins, which have pharmacological functions of retarding aging, enhancing immunity, stimulating blood circulation, and lowering blood pressure. Ginseng is widely used in health products and dietary supplements in the domestic and foreign market. However, the amount of pesticide residues is an important index for measuring the quality of ginseng and ginseng extracts. Therefore, studies focused on methods for the removal of pesticide residues in ginseng extract are of great significance. Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) is used to improve the retention and separation selectivity of strongly polar substances, and it is widely employed in drug analysis, metabolomics, proteomics, etc. In this study, a method for the removal of pesticide residues was developed based on the difference in the retention behavior of pesticide residues and ginsenosides on the HILIC column. Using commercially available ginsenoside extracts, the retention behaviors of pesticide residues and ginsenosides on reverse chromatography and hydrophilic chromatographic columns were evaluated by high performance liquid chromatography. The results proved that on the reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) stationary phase, in addition to the strong retentions of quintozene and pentachloroaniline, which could be clearly separated from the saponins, the retentions of the other five pesticide residues including carbendazim, azoxystrobin, procymidone, iprodione and propiconazole were similar to total ginsenosides. The seven ginsenosides showed strong retention due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups on the sugar chain and the carboxyl groups on the HILIC stationary phase. However, the pesticide residues were not well retained because of their poor hydrophilicity and small molecular weights. For this reason, the pesticide residues and ginsenosides could be completely separated on the HILIC column. Thus, enrichment of the seven ginsenosides and removal of the 14 pesticide residues was realized in one step on the HILIC column. In addition, the effects of loading amount, loading volume, and washing volume on the removal of pesticide residues in ginsenosides were investigated using the Click XIon SPE column. Then, taking the ginsenoside recoveries and pesticide residue removal rates into account, we confirmed the following: the ratio of the maximum sample loading mass to the filler mass was 1∶10; the optimal elution volume was twice the column volume; and the optimal loading volume was twice the column volume. The ginseng extracts were solvated with a 95% ethanol solution and loaded onto an HILIC column. The sample was subjected to pesticide residue removal, and ginsenoside purification and enrichment under the optimum removal conditions. Gradient elution was carried out using ethanol and water as the mobile phases. The total ginsenoside content in the final extracts was increased to 69.61%. The recovery of the total ginsenosides was 94.4%. The pesticide residues in the samples were quantitatively detected by gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) in the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The 14 pesticide residues in the original ginsenoside extracts were effectively removed. The amounts of five residues were reduced to below 0.05 mg/kg, while the other nine residues were completely eliminated. This study demonstrates the application of HILIC to pesticide residue removal in traditional Chinese medicine extracts and reveals a new technique for the purification of natural products. The proposed method shows a high removal rate of pesticide residues and a high recovery of total ginsenosides. It is safe, efficient, and environment-friendly, and can aid the development of high-quality ginsenoside extracts.

With the increase in demand, artificially planting Chinese medicinal materials (CHMs) has also increased, and the ensuing pesticide residue problems have attracted more and more attention. An optimized quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) method with multi-walled carbon nanotubes as dispersive solid-phase extraction sorbents coupled with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was first proposed for the detection of deltamethrin in complex matrix Corydalis yanhusuo . Our results demonstrate that using the optimized QuEChERS method could effectively extract the analyte and reduce background interference from Corydalis . Facile synthesized gold nanoparticles with a large diameter of 75 nm had a strong SERS enhancement for deltamethrin determination. The best prediction model was established with partial least squares regression of the SERS spectra ranges of 545~573 cm -1 and 987~1011 cm -1 with a coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) of 0.9306, a detection limit of 0.484 mg/L and a residual predictive deviation of 3.046. In summary, this article provides a new rapid and effective method for the detection of pesticide residues in CHMs.

An effective analytical method was optimized for residues including chlorpyrifos-methyl, deltamethrin, fenoxanil, thiobencarb and fludioxonil in mealworms, the larval form of Tenebrio molitor . They are listed for pest control during wheat cultivation and can be found in wheat-bran feed for growing mealworms in South Korea. Analytes were extracted using acetonitrile and salt packet. Four clean-up methods ((1) MgSO 4 + 25 mg PSA + 25 mg C18; (2) MgSO 4 + 50 mg PSA + 50 mg C18; (3) EMR-lipid TM tube; and (4) 10 mL n -hexane) were investigated and the method (1) was selected due to its robustness. Low-temperature precipitation of fat and proteins improved the recoveries. Recoveries from the Method (1) were satisfying with 70-120% with <20% relative SD at a spiking level of 0.01 mg/kg. With the simultaneous sample preparation, fenoxanil, thiobencarb and fludioxonil were analyzed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and chlorpyrifos-methyl and deltamethrin by gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Quantification limits for LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS were 0.5 and 2.5 μg/L, respectively. No pesticides of interest were detected in 30 real samples collected across the nation. However, the data can be provided for establishing maximum residue limits for the pesticides in mealworms in response to the positive list system.

In this study, a new rapid cleanup method was developed for the analysis of 111 pesticide multi-residues in lettuce and Chinese chives by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS. QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe)-based sample extraction was used to obtain the extracts, and the cleanup procedure was carried out using a Sin-QuEChERS nano cartridge. Comparison of the cleanup effects, limits of quantification and limits of detection, recoveries, precision and matrix effects (MEs) between the Sin-QuEChERS nano method and the classical dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE) method were performed. When spiked at 10 and 100 μg/kg, the number of pesticides with recoveries between 90% to 110% and relative standard deviations < 15% were greater when using the Sin-QuEChERS nano method. The MEs of Sin-QuEChERS nano and d-SPE methods ranged between 0.72 to 3.41 and 0.63 to 3.56, respectively. The results verified that the Sin-QuEChERS nano method was significantly more effective at removing pigments and more convenient than the d-SPE method. The developed method with the Sin-QuEChERS nano cleanup procedure was applied successfully to determine pesticide residues in market samples.

The excessive use of pesticides is a serious health problem due to their toxicity and bioaccumulation through the food chain. Due to the complexity of foods, the analysis of pesticides is challenging often giving large matrix effects and co-extracted compounds. To overcome this problem, a selective and "green" supercritical fluid extraction method was developed, using neat carbon dioxide as a solvent at pressures of up to 800 bars. A Box-Behnken response surface experimental design was used, with the independent variables of density (0.70-1.0 g mL -1 ), temperature (40-70 C), and volume (10-40 mL) of solvent, and the dependent variable of extracted amount of pesticides. The optimum extraction condition was found at the use of 29 mL of supercritical CO 2 at 0.90 g mL -1 and 53C (corresponding to 372 bars of pressure). It was observed that increasing the density of CO 2 significantly increased the extraction recovery of endrin and 2 , 4 ' -dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane. Matrix-matched calibration curves showed satisfactory linearity ( R 2 ≥ 0.994), and LODs ranged from 0.2 to 2.0 ng g -1 . Precision was lower than 11% and recoveries between 80%-103%. Thus, the developed method could efficiently be used for trace analysis of pesticides in complex food matrices without the use of organic solvents., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

A sensitive, rapid, reliable, and easily applicable method based on magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) combined with HPLC-PDA was developed for monitoring propoxur (PRO) and fenitrothion (FEN) pesticides in environmental water samples. The effect of major experimental variables on the extraction efficiency of both the pesticides was investigated and optimized systematically. For this purpose, a new magnetic material containing decanoic acid on the surface of particles was synthesized and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDX, and TGA analysis in detail. The simultaneous determination of pesticide molecules was carried out by using a Luna Omega C18 column, isocratic elution of acetonitrile (ACN): Water (70:30 v / v ) with a flow rate of 1.2 mL min -1 . After MSPE, the linear range for pesticide molecules (r 2 > 0.9982) was obtained in the range of 5-800 and 10-800 ng mL -1 , respectively. The limit of detections (LOD) are 1.43 and 4.71 ng mL -1 for PRO and FEN, respectively while RSDs % are below 3.5%. The applicability of the proposed method in four different environmental samples were also investigated using a standard addition-recovery procedure. Average recoveries at two spiking levels were over the range of 91.3-102.5% with RSD < 5.0% ( n = 3). The obtained results show that decanoic acid grafted magnetic particles in MSPE combined with HPLC-PDA is a fast and simple method for the determination of PRO and FEN in environmental water samples.

A multi-residue method for the determination of 107 pesticide residues in wolfberry has been developed and validated. Similar pretreatment approaches were compared, and the linearity, matrix effect, analysis limits, precision, stability and accuracy were validated, which verifies the satisfactory performance of this new method. The LODs and LOQs were in the range of 0.14-1.91 µg/kg and 0.46-6.37 µg/kg, respectively. The recovery of analytes at three fortification levels (10 µg/kg, 50 µg/kg, 100 µg/kg) ranged from 63.3-123.0%, 72.0-118.6% and 67.0-118.3%, respectively, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 15.0%. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of fifty wolfberry samples collected from supermarkets, pharmacies and farmers' markets in different cities of Shandong Province. One hundred percent of the samples analyzed included at least one pesticide, and a total of 26 pesticide residues was detected in fifty samples, which mainly were insecticides and bactericide. Several pesticides with higher detection rates were 96% for acetamiprid, 82% for imidacloprid, 54% for thiophanate-methyl, 50% for blasticidin-S, 42% for carbendazim, 42% for tebuconazole and 36% for difenoconazole in wolfberry samples. This study proved the adaptability of the developed method to the detection of multiple pesticide residues in wolfberry and provided basis for the research on the risks to wolfberry health.

Kresoxim-methyl is a high-efficiency and broad-spectrum fungicide used for the control of rice fungal diseases; however, its residues after application potentially threaten human health. Investigations on the dissipation of kresoxim-methyl residue in rice field systems and dietary risk assessment of kresoxim-methyl in humans are limited. The present study employed the QuEChERS-GC-MS/MS method for residue analysis of kresoxim-methyl in rice plants, brown rice, and rice husks. The samples were extracted with acetonitrile and purified by PSA, C 18 column, and GCB. The average recovery of the spiked target compounds in the three matrices was between 80.5% and 99.3%, and the RSD was between 2.1% and 7.1%. The accuracy and precision of the method is in accordance with the requirements of residue analysis methods. Dissipation dynamic testing of kresoxim-methyl in rice plants indicated a half-life within the range of 1.8⁻6.0 days, and a rapid dissipation rate was detected. Dietary intake risk assessment showed that the national estimated daily intake ( NEDI ) of kresoxim-methyl in various Chinese subpopulations was 0.022⁻0.054 μg/(kg bw·days), and the risk quotient ( RQ ) was 0.0000055⁻0.00014%. These findings indicate that the risk for chronic dietary intake of kresoxim-methyl in brown rice is relatively low. The present study provides information and theoretical basis for guiding the scientific use of kresoxim-methyl in rice fields and evaluating its dietary risk in brown rice.

The Ultra turrax® tube drive, already successfully applied for the extraction of plant materials, has also proved to be suitable for the analysis of pesticides in eggs and milk. In comparison to the matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD), the extraction is less time-consuming at excellent extraction efficiency. Further advantages are the flexibility of the extraction conditions with respect to the pH value and water activity. So, even strongly acidic pesticides such as phenoxy carboxylic acids can be extracted. Eighty-nine GC-amenable and 75 LC-amenable pesticides, which had been detected successfully in whole chicken eggs following MSPD extraction and further processing according to Hildmann et al., could also be analyzed with the modified method. In addition, the analysis spectrum could be expanded by 4 GC- and 37 LC-amenable substances. Of the 208 pesticides tested, 205 substances could be detected in whole chicken eggs. Similar excellent results were achieved for the milk matrix. Furthermore, the modified extraction method allows a determination of the fat content from the same analysis approach.

In this work, 260 pesticide residues, including insecticides, acaricides, fungicides, and herbicides, were extracted from honeybees using the QuEChERS methodology modified by applying an ultrasonic probe, which avoided the homogenization step and reduced the extraction time. Gas and liquid chromatography, both coupled to triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry, allowed the determination of the pesticide residues extracted from the samples. The optimization of the main ultrasonic conditions (sonication amplitude, number of cycles, and time of each cycle) was performed using a Box-Behnken experimental design involving 15 experimental samples. The results obtained with this approach showed that the recoveries were not affected by these experimental parameters for 95 pesticide residues whereas the sonication amplitude was the main factor affecting the recoveries of 107 pesticide residues. The extraction time and the number of cycles affected four and one pesticide residues, respectively. The effectiveness of the ultrasonic-assisted extraction without homogenization of the honeybee samples compared favorably with that for the conventional QuEChERS methodology applied to the same previously homogenized samples. The proposed methodology was validated according to the SANTE/11945/2015 guidelines, with a 5 μg/kg limit of quantitation. Recoveries between 70 and 120% and relative standard deviations lower than 20% were obtained for most analytes. Thirty honeybee samples taken from Spanish apiaries were analyzed using this new methodology. The results revealed the presence of 30 different pesticide residues in the honeybee samples, the highest concentration levels corresponding to certain insecticides/acaricides used by beekeepers to control Varroa destructor. Permethrin, thiabendazole, carbendazim, and coumaphos were the most frequently detected pesticide residues in the selected samples.

In this study, a new method for the simultaneous quantitative determination of triclopyr and aminopyralid in forage grass, hay, and soil was developed and validated using gas chromatography coupled with electron capture detector (GC-ECD). In this method, a simple and maneuverable esterification reaction was applied to convert the two acidic herbicides into their ester form with methanol. The target compounds were extracted with 1% hydrochloric acid-acetonitrile, esterified, purified by florisil solid-phase extraction cartridge, and detected in a single run by the GC-ECD. The average recoveries using this method, at different fortified levels, ranged from 80% to 104% with intra-day and inter-day RSDs in the range of 1.2-10.8% and 3.3-10.3% for both the herbicides, respectively. The LODs were below 0.02 mg/kg while the LOQs were below 0.05 mg/kg, both of which were much lower than the maximum residue limits (MRLs) of 25-700 mg/kg in pastures, as established by the USA (the code of federal regulations). The open field dissipation and residual analysis in pastures and soil were conducted with the commercial formulation at two locations. With time, both triclopyr and aminopyralid dissipated via first-order kinetics. In forage grass, both compounds degraded rapidly over the first 14- or 21-d period and at a slow rate over the remainder of experimental days. In soil, they degraded at a relatively slow rate, and dissipated steadily to below or close to the LOQ by 60-d post application. The half-lives of triclopyr were 1.4-1.8 d and 6.2-9.0 d and aminopyralid were 1.7-2.1 d and 8.2-10.6 d in terms of forage grass and soil, respectively. The terminal residue results indicated that on 7 d after the treatment, the residues of aminopyralid and triclopyr in forage grass and hay were lower than the MRLs set by the USA. This work can provide guidance on the reasonable use of these herbicides and also provide an analytical method for the determination of triclopyr and aminopyralid in pasture and soil., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Honey taken directly from 59 bee hives on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i was analyzed for glyphosate residue using ELISA techniques. Glyphosate residue was detected (> LOQ) in 27% of honey samples, at concentrations up to 342 ppb, with a mean = 118 ppb, S.E.M. 24 ppb. Of 15 honey samples store-purchased on Kaua'i, glyphosate was detected in 33%, with a mean concentration of 41 ppb, S.E.M. 14. Glyphosate residue was not detected in two samples from the island of Molokai but was in one of four samples from the island of Hawai'i. Presence and concentration of glyphosate residues were geospatially mapped with respect to Hawaiian land divisions. Mapping showed higher occurrence of glyphosate that was over LOQ (48%) and concentrations of glyphosate (mean = 125 ppb, S.E.M. 25 ppb; N = 15) in honey from the western, predominantly agricultural, half of Kaua'i versus the eastern half (4%, mean = 15 ppb; N = 1). Geographic Information System analysis of land use percentage was performed within a circular zone of 1 Km radius around each hive. Various land use types within each circular zone were transcribed into polygons and percent land use calculated. Only agriculture land use showed a strong positive correlation with glyphosate concentration. High glyphosate concentrations were also detected when extensive golf courses and/or highways were nearby. This suggests herbicide migration from the site of use into other areas by bees. Graphitic carbon nitride/bismuth ferrite nanocomposites (g-C 3 N 4 /BiFeO 3 NCs) were synthesized by a facile one step sol-gel combustion method and employed as a peroxidase-like catalyst. Based on the catalytical activity on the luminol-H 2 O 2 reaction, the nanocomposites were utilized as a colorimetric/chemiluminescent dual-readout immunochromatographic assay (ICA) for the multiplexed detection of pesticide residues by utilizing chlorpyrifos and carbaryl as the model analytes. In the proposed protocol, chlorpyrifos antibody and carbaryl antibody were tagged to g-C 3 N 4 /BiFeO 3 NCs for developing the spatially-resolved multianalyte ICA. After two competitive immunoreactions completed on the ICA test strip, the tracer antibodies were captured by the immobilized antigens on two test lines. The accumulation of g-C 3 N 4 /BiFeO 3 NCs led to the appearance of brown color, which were observed as a colorimetric and semi-quantitative signal. Furthermore, the g-C 3 N 4 /BiFeO 3 NCs-driven generation of CL signal was collected as a sensitively quantitative signal after initiating the luminol-H 2 O 2 reaction on the test lines. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection of chlorpyrifos and carbaryl were both 0.033ng/mL. The dual-readout ICA was successfully used to detect chlorpyrifos and carbaryl spiked in environmental water and traditional Chinese medicine samples with acceptable recovery values of 80-119% and 90-118%. Estimating the influence of bioaccessibility of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables on dietary exposure is a challenge for human health risk assessment. This study investigated the bioaccessibility of pesticide residues in cherry tomatoes and contributing factors (digestion time, pH, solid/liquid ratio, and dietary nutrition) using an in vitro test simulating the human gastrointestinal tract. pH had the largest effect on triazolone precipitation in the simulated gastric intestinal juice, which had a significant impact on the bioaccessibility. The bioaccessibility of triazolone in the intestinal stage was slightly higher than that in the stomach stage, owing to bile salts and pancreatic enzymes present in the intestinal juice. The bioaccessibility of triazolone did not change significantly with digestion time. In the gastric stage, there was a logarithmic relationship between the bioaccessibility and solid/liquid ratio (R² = 0.9941). The addition of oil significantly changed the bioaccessibility in the gastrointestinal stage. Protein and dietary fiber only affected bioaccessibility in the stomach stage. Dietary nutrition can reduce the release of pesticides from fruits and vegetables into the stomach, sharply reducing the bioaccessibility, and the dietary exposure of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables can be properly evaluated., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Phenolic resin based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were applied for the first time as a reversed-dispersive solid-phase extraction (r-DSPE) sorbent. A modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method was applied to determine 26 pesticides (organophosphates, organochlorines, synthetic pyrethroids, and herbicides) in different complex matrices, including cauliflower, cucumber, banana, apple, wheat, and black gram. Different physicochemical characterization techniques were used to investigate the engineering and structural properties of the r-DSPE sorbent. All the chromatographic analyses were performed with a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector. The recoveries of all 26 pesticides were acceptable (70-120%), with relative standard deviations of less than 15%. The limit of detection and the limit of quantification were 1.13-5.48 ng/g and 3.42-16.60 ng/g, respectively. In the original QuEChERS method, primary secondary amine is extensively used as the r-DSPE sorbent in the cleanup process, but it is eightfold more expensive than the ACFs used in this study. Therefore, the modified QuEChERS method using ACFs during the cleanup process is more efficient, cheaper, and more robust to determine pesticides from different types of matrices, including vegetables, grains, and fruits, and ACFs could be used as a cost-effective alternative to primary secondary amine. An analytical method was developed and validated for the determination of ten pesticides in sewage sludge coming from an agro-food industry. The method was based on the application of Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) extraction for solid sewage sludge and SPE extraction for sludge aqueous phase, followed by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to hybrid quadrupole/linear ion trap mass spectrometry (QqLIT-MS). The QuEChERS method was reported 14 years ago and nowadays is mainly applied to the analysis of pesticides in food. More recent applications have been reported in other matrices as sewage sludge, but the complexity of the matrix makes necessary the optimization of the cleanup step to improve the efficiency of the analysis. With this aim, several dispersive solid-phase extraction cleanup sorbents were tested, choosing C18 + PSA as a d-SPE sorbent. The proposed method was satisfactorily validated for most compounds investigated, showing recoveries higher than 80% in most cases, with the only exception of prochloraz (71%) at low concentration level. Limits of quantification were lower than 40 ng l -1 in the aqueous phase and below 40 ng g -1 in the solid phase for the majority of the analytes. The method was applied to solid sludge and the sludge aqueous phase coming from an agro-food industry which processes fruits and vegetables. As a natural and healthy beverage, tea is widely enjoyed; however, the pesticide residues in tea leaves affect the quality and food safety. To develop a highly selective and efficient method for the facile removal of pesticide residues, the subcritical butane extraction (SBE) technique was employed, and three variables involving temperature, time and extraction cycles were studied. The optimum SBE conditions were found to be as follows: extraction temperature 45 °C, extraction time 30 min, number of extraction cycles 1, and in such a condition that the extraction efficiency reached as high as 92%. Further, the catechins, theanine, caffeine and aroma components, which determine the quality of the tea, fluctuated after SBE treatment. Compared with the uncrushed leaves, pesticide residues can more easily be removed from crushed leaves, and the practical extraction efficiency was 97%. These results indicate that SBE is a useful method to efficiently remove the bifenthrin, and as appearance is not relevant in the production process, tea leaves should first be crushed and then extracted in order that residual pesticides are thoroughly removed.

The presence of pesticides in human milk (HM) is of great concern due to the potential health effects for the breastfed infant. To determine the relationships between HM pesticides and infant growth and development, a longitudinal study was conducted. HM samples (n = 99) from 16 mothers were collected at 2, 5, 9 and 12 months of lactation. A validated QuEChERS method and Gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) were used for the analysis of 88 pesticides in HM. Only p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDT and β-HCH were detected with a mean concentration (±SD) of 52.25 ± 49.88 ng/g fat, 27.67 ± 20.96 ng/g fat and 48.00 ± 22.46 ng/g fat respectively. The concentrations of the detected pesticides decreased significantly throughout the first year of lactation. No significant relationships between HM p,p'-DDE and infant growth outcomes: weight, length, head circumference and percentage fat mass were detected. The actual daily intake (ADI) of total DDTs in this cohort was 14-1000 times lower than the threshold reference and significantly lower than the estimated daily intake (EDI). Further, the ADI decreased significantly throughout the first 12 months of lactation.

This study aimed to develop an efficient, sensitive, and reliable analytical method for trace analysis of 17 different pyrethroids and chlorpyrifos in the fatty content of animal products, including beef, chicken, eggs, fish, and milk. The method developed is based on an ultrasound extraction using lyophilized samples, a solid phase extraction cleanup with basic alumina and C18 cartridges in tandem, and analysis by gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry in negative chemical ionization mode. Recovery values were in the range of 27-128 % with relative standard deviation always below 25 %, and chiral analysis of recovery data showed predominance of isomers of cis form over trans. Limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.002 to 6.43 ng g -1 lipid weight (lw), and limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged between 0.006 and 21.4 ng g -1  lw. The developed methodology was used for the analysis of 25 samples of fatty foods. All samples were positive for at least one of the pesticides, chlorpyrifos, bifenthrin, cyhalothrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, or deltamethrin, with mass fraction levels ranging from 0.03 to 270 ng g -1 lw. Agricultural point source pesticide pollution arising from contaminated machinery washings and accidental spillages pose a significant threat to river water and groundwater quality. In this study, we assess the effectiveness of a three-stage on-farm biobed for treating pesticide contaminated wastewater from a large (20 km(2)) commercial arable estate. The facility consisted of an enclosed machinery wash-down unit (stage 1), a 49 m(2) lined compost-straw-topsoil biobed (stage 2), and a 200 m(2) drainage field with a trickle irrigation system (stage 3). Pesticide concentrations were analysed in water samples collected fortnightly between November 2013 and November 2015 from the biobed input and output sumps and from 20 porous pots buried at 45 cm and 90 cm depth within the drainage field. The results revealed that the biobed removed 68-98% of individual pesticides within the contaminated washings, with mean total pesticide concentrations reducing by 91.6% between the biobed input and output sumps. Drainage field irrigation removed a further 68-99% of individual pesticides, with total mean pesticide concentrations reducing by 98.4% and 97.2% in the 45 cm and 90 cm depth porous pots, respectively. The average total pesticide concentration at 45 cm depth in the drainage field (57 μg L(-1)) was 760 times lower than the mean concentration recorded in the input sump (43,334 μg L(-1)). There was no evidence of seasonality in the efficiency of biobed pesticide removal, nor was there evidence of a decline in removal efficiency over the two-year monitoring period. However, higher mean total pesticide concentrations at 90 cm (102 μg L(-1)) relative to 45 cm (57 μg L(-1)) depth indicated an accumulation of pesticide residues deeper within the soil profile. A method was developed and validated for the analysis of 87 pesticides in cotton and groundnut oil by GC with ECD and FPD detectors and LC-MS/MS. The extraction procedure based on QuEChERS followed by low-temperature freezing and dispersive cleanup steps was validated in two oil matrices for 87 pesticides of different classes. Linearity, expressed as coefficient of variation, was within the acceptable range. Of those tested, 77-83 and 77-89% pesticides showed recoveries within the acceptable range of 70-120% on LC-MS/MS in cottonseed oil and groundnut oil, respectively, at different spiking levels. In case of GC analysis, 63-65 and 53-82% pesticides showed recoveries within the acceptable range of 70-120% on GC in cottonseed oil and groundnut oil, respectively, at different spiking levels. The exceptions to these recoveries were the few organochlorines which consistently gave lower recoveries. Recovery factors can be employed while analysing these pesticides by this method as the results obtained were consistent in both oils. RSD was less than 20% for most of the pesticides. The calculated limit of quantitation (LOQ) for most of the pesticides satisfies the maximum residue level (MRL) requirements as per European Union (EU) guidelines and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

As the consumption of aquatic products increased, the need for regulation of pesticide residues in aquatic products also emerged. Thus, in this study, a scheduled multiple reaction monitoring (sMRM) method employing a novel extraction and purification step based on QuEChERS with EDTA was developed for the simultaneous quantitation of 20 pesticides (alachlor, aldicarb, carbofuran, diazinon, dimethoate, dimethomorph, ethoprophos, ferimzone, fluridone, hexaconazole, iprobenfos, malathion, methidathion, methiocarb, phenthoate, phosalone, phosmet, phosphamidon, pirimicarb, and simazine) in aquatic products. Additionally, the present method was validated in the aspects of specificity, linearity (r ≥ 0.980), sensitivity (the limit of quantitation (LOQ) ≤ 5 ng/g), relative standard deviation, RSD (1.0% ≤ RSD ≤ 19.4%), and recovery (60.1% ≤ recovery ≤ 117.9%). Finally, the validated method was applied for the determination of the 20 pesticide residues in eel and shrimp purchased from local food markets. In the present study, QuEChERS with EDTA was successfully expanded to residual pesticide analysis for the first time. The present method could contribute to the rapid and successful establishment of the positive list system in South Korea.

As nanofluidic channels, uniaxially oriented mesoporous-silica is, for the first time, in-situ self-assembled in a microfluidic chip for quick enrichment/extraction of ng L(-1)(ppt)-level organo-phosphorous (OP) pesticide residue from aqueous solution to ethanol. This micro/nano combined pre-treatment chip is essential for following gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) quantitative analysis. Featuring huge surface area and dense silanol groups at the inwall surface, the mesoporous-silica is uniaxially self-assembled in a micro-reservoir to form a pile of nanofluidic channels (diameter = 2.1 nm). The captured/enriched pesticide molecules in the nanochannels can be efficiently extracted by much smaller volume of ethanol due to its much higher solubility to OP. In our affirming experiment, three mixed OP pesticides of dichlorvos, paraoxon and chlorpyrifos (in water) are captured/enriched by the nano-channels and eluted/extracted by only 0.6 mL ethanol. The whole process only takes 16 min. The GC-MS quantitative results for the extracted three pesticides indicate that the extraction recovery achieves 80%. The achieved limit of quantification (LOQ) and the limit of detection (LOD) are 100 ng L(-1) and 30 ng L(-1), respectively. The nanofluidic-channel pre-treatment technique is promising in various application fields like agriculture and food safety security.

A reliable and cost-effective method for the determination of multiple neonicotinoids was developed using a modified QuEChERS-based extraction procedure in complex matrices, namely Hedyotis diffusa (a representative of the Traditional Chinese herb which contains lots of pigment, saponin and terpene) and Semifluid extract of deer foetus (a representative of the Chinese traditional patent medicine that was produced with several different herbs, and especially containing lots of protein, except for other interference components). Ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was used for the quantification and confirmation of five compounds. Except for two transitions obtained by the MRM mode, identification was further carried out by the ion radios. The proposed chemical structure of every selected product ion and the proposed pyrolysis way were presented. The extraction, clean-up, UPLC separation and MS/MS parameters were especially optimized in order to obtain better recoveries. The low limits of detection (LODs) of five insecticides ranged from 0.04 to 0.81 μg kg(-1). Matrix matched calibration in the concentration range of 0.05 - 50 μg kg(-1) were used to compensate the matrix effect, and reasonable recoveries 80.2 - 105.4% of five compounds were demonstrated in different spiked levels with inter-RSD from 1.7 to 10.6%. The proposed method is an alternative approach to make an analysis of neonicotinoids in Chinese medicine, which is more reliable and promising compared with other detection methods.

Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) is an extraction and clean-up technique originally developed for recovering pesticide residues from fruits and vegetables. Since its introduction, and until December 2013, about 700 papers have been published using the QuEChERS technique, according to a literature overview carried out using SciFinder, Elsevier SciVerse, and Google search engines. Most of these papers were dedicated to pesticide multiresidue analysis in food matrices, and this topic has been thoroughly reviewed over recent years. The QuEChERS approach is now rapidly developing beyond its original field of application to analytes other than pesticides, and matrices other than food, such as biological fluids and non-edible plants, including Chinese medicinal plants. Recently, the QuEChERS concept has spread to environmental applications by analyzing not only pesticides but also other compounds of environmental concern in soil, sediments, and water. To the best of our knowledge, QuEChERS environmental applications have not been reviewed so far; therefore, in this contribution, after a general discussion on the evolution and changes of the original QuEChERS method, a critical survey of the literature regarding environmental applications of conventional and modified QuEChERS methodology is provided. The overall recoveries obtained with QuEChERS and other extraction approaches (e.g., accelerated solvent extraction, ultrasonic solvent extraction, liquid/solid extraction, and soxhlet extraction) were compared, providing evidence for QuEChERS higher recoveries for various classes of compounds, such as biopesticides, chloroalkanes, phenols, and perfluoroalkyl substances. The role of physicochemical properties of soil (i.e., clay and organic carbon content, as well as cation exchange capacity) and target analytes (i.e., log KOW, water solubility, and vapor pressure) were also evaluated in order to interpret recovery and matrix effect data.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) can cause environmental damage and human health risks since they are lipophilic compounds with high resistance to degradation and long half-lives in humans. As most persistent OCPs have been banned years ago, it is expected to find these compounds at trace levels in environment. Therefore, increasingly sensitive and reliable analytical techniques are required to ensure effective monitoring of these compounds. The aim of this review is to discuss extraction and clean-up methods used to monitor OCP residues in milk, reported in the last 20 years. To carry out this review, an exhaustive bibliographic review was conducted. Despite the disadvantages of conventional extraction and clean-up methods, such as liquid-liquid, solid-phase or Soxhlet extractions, these procedures are still used due to their reliability. New extraction methods, like solid-phase microextraction, matrix solid-phase dispersion or QuEChERS, have not been thoroughly evaluated for OCP determination in milk. Almost all the methodologies analyzed in this review presented good performance characteristics according to the performance acceptability criteria set in SANCO's procedure. Comparison between limits of quantification (LOQ) and detection (LOD), for the reported methodologies, is not always possible due to the heterogeneity of the units. Thus, researchers should take into account an homogenization of LOD and LOQ units, according to the international regulations and MRLs established. Finally, more research is necessary to obtain the ideal methodology for OCPs determination in milk, which comprises the environmentally friendly characteristics of the new techniques and the reliability of the traditional methodologies., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. This study describe an analytical method employing gas chromatography (GC) using flame photometric detection that has been developed for the simultaneous determination of organophosphate pesticides (diazinon, disulfoton, parathion, chlorpyrifos and malathion) in strawberry samples. For this purpose, molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction was applied as a sample preparation technique. The method was linear in the ranges from 0.10 to 1.00 μg g(-1), for diazinon, disulfoton, parathion and chlorpyrifos, and 0.10 to 2.00 μg g(-1) for malathion with r > 0.99. The detection limits (LD) ranged from 0.02 to 0.05 μg g(-1). Recovery studies yielded average recoveries in the range of 65.25 to 87.70 %. These results showed the potential of this technique for organophosphate residue monitoring in strawberry samples.

In the present study, a new analytical method has been developed for the simultaneous quantification of 15 organophosphorus pesticides, including some of their metabolites, (disulfoton-sulfoxide, ethoprophos, cadusafos, dimethoate, terbufos, disulfoton, chlorpyrifos-methyl, malaoxon, fenitrothion, pirimiphos-methyl, malathion, chlorpyrifos, terbufos-sulfone, disulfoton-sulfone and fensulfothion) in three different types of commercial cereal-based baby foods. Dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was used together with gas chromatography with nitrogen phosphorus detection. Most favorable conditions involved a previous ultrasound-assisted extraction of the sample with acetonitrile containing formic acid. After evaporation of the extract and redissolution in water, a dSPE procedure was carried out with MWCNTs. The whole method was validated in terms of repeatability, linearity, precision and accuracy and matrix effect was also evaluated. Absolute recoveries were in the range 64-105 % with relative standard deviation values below 7.6 %. Limits of quantification achieved ranged from 0.31 to 5.50 μg/kg, which were lower than the European Union maximum residue limits for pesticide residues in cereal-based baby foods.

Background: In the European Union (EU), the use of diniconazole-M is no longer authorized. However, residues of diniconazole-M occur in various plant commodities., Methodology/principal Findings: A selective and simple analytical method for the trace level determination of diniconazole in soil, fruit, vegetables and water samples was developed based on immunoaffinity extraction followed by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The ELISA was based on monoclonal antibodies highly specific to diniconazole and was a fast, cost-effective, and selective screening method for the detection of diniconazole. The results of the ELISA correlated well with gas chromatography (GC) results, with the correlation coefficient of 0.9879 (n = 19). A simple gel permeation chromato- graphy clean-up method was developed to purify extracts from matrices containing high amounts of fat and natural pigments, without the need for a large dilution of the sample. The immunoaffinity column (IAC) capacity was 0.180 mg g(-1). The columns could be re-used approximately 20 times with no significant alteration in capacity. The recoveries from complex samples were in the range of 89.2% to 96.1% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.770%-6.11% by ELISA. The results were in good agreement with those obtained by HPLC method., Conclusion/significance: The IAC extraction procedure coupled with HPLC and ELISA analysis could be also used as alternative effective analytical methods for the determination of diniconazole concentrations in complex samples.

A mixed anionic-cationic surfactant cloud point extraction (CPE) has been developed using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr) for the extraction and preconcentration of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) at ambient temperature before analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography. The studied OPPs were azinphos-methyl, parathion-methyl, fenitrothion, diazinon, chlorpyrifos, and prothiophos. The optimum conditions of the mixed anionic-cationic CPE were 50 mmol L(-1) SDS, 100 mmol L(-1) TBABr, and 10% (w/v) NaCl. The extracted OPPs were successfully separated within 11 min using the conditions of a Waters Symmetry C8 column, a flow rate of 0.8 mL min(-1), a gradient elution of methanol and water, and detection at 210 nm. Linearity was found over the range 0.05-5 μg mL(-1), with the correlation coefficients higher than 0.996. The enrichment factor of the target analytes was in the range 6-11, which corresponds to their limits of detection from 1 to 30 ng mL(-1). High precisions (intra-day and inter-day) were obtained with relative standard deviation <1.5% (t(R)) and 10% (peak area). Accuracies (% recovery) of the different spiked OPP concentrations were 82.7-109.1% (water samples) and 80.3-113.3% (fruit juice samples). No contamination by the OPPs was observed in any studied samples.

A rapid and easy method has been proposed, optimized and evaluated for quantitative determination at trace level of a representative group of non-polar pesticides in fat samples. The method includes n-hexane-saturated acetonitrile extraction, fat precipitation by cooling pre clean-up followed by dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) based on QuEChERS procedure clean-up. Determination was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. Efficiency of the d-SPE clean-up step was evaluated by comparison with fat oxidation treatment and gel permeation chromatography. Different combinations of d-SPE extraction reagents and sample amounts were tested in order to minimize matrix co-extractives and interferences. Best recoveries were obtained with 1200 mg of MgSO(4), 400 mg of end-capped C(18), 400 mg of PSA and 1 g of sample amount. SIM method, matrix effect, precision, and accuracy were evaluated with spiked pork fat samples for 38 representative pesticides. Results of this study showed that this technique is applicable in routine analysis for its application into monitoring programs. It simplifies time-consuming clean-up steps and allows a satisfactory long-term chromatographic performance.

The sample pretreatment methods for the determination of chlorinated organic pollutants in plants by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (MS) were established. The homogeneous extraction was used to extract the chlorinated organic pollutants from plants. The main interferences in the co-extract from several kinds of plant samples were recognized. The sensitivity of the analysis on organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in plant samples was effectively improved. The removal efficiency of the interferences from the extract by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) was investigated. The impurities such as fatty acids and phenols can be cleaned-up through a Carb/NH2 SPE column with 20 mL mixed solvent of hexane-ethyl acetate (8:2, v/v) in 3% toluene as the eluent, and the recoveries were higher than 74%. It was necessary to combine GPC with SPE as the clean-up method when the sample was determined by GC, and only the SPE as the clean-up method was used if a mass spectrometer was employed as a detector. The methods are rapid and sensitive, and can be used in the analysis of organic pollutant residues in plant samples efficiently.

Lignocellulosic materials are used as substrate for the cultivation of the edible mushroom Pleurotus pulmonarius. After two or three flushes of mushrooms, the spent substrate is discarded although it still has an important enzymatic activity that can be used for several purposes. In this study, we sought to determine the technical feasibility of using spent substrate from P. pulmonarius to degrade chlorothalonil. Reaction mixture was prepared with 6 ml of pesticide aqueous solution (2 mg active ingredient/l) and 3 ml of enzymatic extract obtained from spent P. pulmonarius substrate. The enzymatic reaction (27 °C, pH 7.4) was conducted for 1 h with sampling at 15 min intervals. The effect of storage time and temperature (freezing or refrigerating) of spent substrate and enzymatic extract, respectively, on the activity over chlorothalonil was determined. Freshly obtained spent substrate extract was able to reduce 100% of the initial concentration of chlorothalonil (2 mg/l) after 45 min of reaction. Storage time had a negative effect on the stability of the enzymatic activity: with spent substrate stored for a week, chlorothalonil concentration was reduced in 49.5% after 1 h reaction and with substrate stored for two and three weeks, the degradation efficiency decreased to 9.15% and 0%, respectively. Pesticides are widely used in rice cultivation, often resulting in detection of their residues in rice grains. So far, no analytical method has been available for the simultaneous determination of most rice pesticides in rice grains. This paper reports the development and validation of such a method for the determination of eight rice pesticides (penoxsulam tricyclazole, propanil, azoxystrobin, molinate, profoxydim, cyhalofop-butyl, deltamethrin) and 3,4-dichloroaniline, the main metabolite of propanil. Pesticide extraction and clean-up was performed by an optimized matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) protocol on neutral alumina (5 g) using acetonitrile as the elution solvent. Samples were analyzed in a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) system. Pesticide separation was achieved with a mobile phase of acetonitrile/water in a linear elution gradient from 30:70% (v/v) to 100:0% (v/v) in 14 min at a flow rate of 0.8 mL min(-1). Method validation was performed by means of linearity, intra-day accuracy, inter-day precision and sensitivity. Linear regression coefficients (R(2)) were always above 0.9948. Limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) varied from 0.002 to 0.200 mg kg(-1) and 0.006 to 0.600 mg kg(-1), respectively. Recoveries were investigated at three fortification levels and were found to be acceptable (74-127%) with relative standard deviations (RSD) below 12%. Application of the method for the analysis of five commercial rice grain samples showed that the pesticide levels were below the LOD. Overall, the method developed is suitable for the determination of residues of most rice pesticides in rice grains at levels below the established MRLs.

In environmental analyses there is an ever-increasing need to develop simple and sensitive multi-residue methods. In many agricultural regions, there is particular concern of the potential for pesticides to enter rivers and other waterways. This study reports on the development and validation of a multi-residue method of analysis for 30 pesticides in water samples using solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by LC-MS/MS. The electrospray and MS/MS parameters were optimised for each pesticide, including capillary voltage, collision-induced dissociation voltage, and selection of a precursor ion and two product ions. A variety of SPE sorbents were tested for sample pre-concentration, including numerous polymeric based phases. Bond Elut PPL and Oasis HLB were the only phases capable of retaining the majority of the target analyte classes in a single method. An off-line pre-concentration method using a Gilson Aspec system was optimised using the Bond Elut PPL cartridges, with a concentration factor of 25 producing limits of quantitation in the order of 6-100 ng/L. Excellent linearity (r2 > 0.9), precision (<20%) and recovery (>60%) was obtained for nearly all of the analytes, covering a wide variety of chemical and physical properties. This is the first study to fully validate Bond Elut PPL cartridges for use in multi-residue pesticide analysis.

ZJ0273, propyl 4-(2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yloxy)benzylamino)benzoate, is a broad-spectrum herbicide being marketed for use on rape crops. However, environmental behavior and fate of ZJ0273 remained poorly understood. In this study, we used ZJ0273 labelled with (14)C on the C ring to understand the transformation of ZJ0273 in aerobic soils. Results showed a first-order dissipation pattern for the parent compound, with half-lives ranging from 17.2 to 53.7 d, suggesting a short to moderate persistence. The dissipation of the parent molecule was accompanied by formation of bound residues and mineralization. The transformation of ZJ0273 appeared to decrease with decreasing soil pH and organic matter content. Differences were often observed in the formation of bound residues, and mineralization among different soils. After 100 d of incubation, the total bound residue accounted for 17.4-28.8% of the total applied amount in the three soils, while cumulative mineralization to CO(2) reached 1.2% for an acidic soil, 7.7% for neutral and 9.9% for alkaline soil, suggesting that the herbicide in the neutral and alkaline soils met the non-accumulative criteria as stated in the directives by the Commission of the European Communities.

The photocatalytic degradation of the three pesticides acephate, dimethoate, and glyphosate in water has been investigated using UV light and TiO2 immobilized on silica gel as photocatalyst. Results show that the pesticides can be efficiently degraded by the UV/TiO2 system used in the study. Complete (100%) decomposition of dimethoate and glyphosate was attained within 60 min of irradiation, while total degradation of acephate occurred after 105 min of photocatalytic treatment. Acephate and dimethoate decomposition followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood apparent first-order degradation kinetics, suggesting the photocatalytic nature of pesticide disappearance, whereas glyphosate decomposition was governed by both adsorption and photocatalytic reactions. Evolution of heteroatoms at their highest oxidized states such as SO(4)(2-), NO(3)(-), and PO(4)(3-) ions provides evidence that pesticide degradation occurred primarily through photocatalytic oxidation reactions. Non-detection of toxic intermediates such as methamidophos and omethoate that have been reported in other studies demonstrates rapid destruction of the pesticides into harmless byproducts using the system.

Data on levels of persistent organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) that exhibit potentially harmful effects to the environment all over the Portuguese coastal sediments were scarce. Therefore, in 2007-2008 12 OCPs were surveyed in surface sediments from 11 coastal sites (estuarine or lagoonal) covering north, centre and south areas of Portugal. Analyzes were performed using a previously validated method, involving pre-extraction of OCPs from sediments assisted by microwave and headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography with electron capture detection for quantification and mass spectrometry for OCPs identification. Measurable levels (0.08-26ng g(-1)) of alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha -HCH), gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (lindane), aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, 4,4'-DDT, 4,4'-DDD, 4,4'-DDE, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, endosulfan I and methoxychlor were observed in all cases. In few cases, the found levels denote the probability of occurrence of adverse biological effects.

The amounts, profiles and origin of CNs (from triCNs to octaCN) sequestered in Scots pine needles collected from 25 spatially distant sites in Poland have been studied based on congener-specific data obtained after a several clean-up and fractionation steps and final HRGC/HRMS separation and determination. The absolute concentrations of CNs varied largely from site to site, i.e., by 15-fold. The sum of tri- to octaCN concentration at fifteen of the least contaminated sites ranged from 70 to 280 pg g(-1) ww, and at further eight sites were from 340 to 540 pg g(-1) ww, while at two the most contaminated were 1000 and 1100 pg g(-1)ww. There were some substantial similarities but also variations in triCN to octaCN homologue group profiles depending on the site. Among triCNs the isomers such as 1,2,4-/1,3,7-/1,4,6-triCNs (nos. 14/21/24) dominate in Scots pine needles. For majority of the sites examined 1,2,4-/1,3,7-/1,4,6-triCNs are also the major contributors to the bulk of CNs determined. Among tetraCNs isomer 1,2,5,8-tetraCN (no. 38) was dominant contributor at eighteen sites, while 1,2,4,6-/1,2,4,7-/1,2,5,7-tetraCN (nos. 33/34/37) at seven other sites. In the case of pentaCNs isomer 1,2,4,5,8-pentaCN (no. 59), was dominant contributor alone. Octachloronaphthalene frequently contributed substantially to the bulk of CNs. The Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis did indicate that the compositional profiles of CNs found in Scots pine needles resemble somehow these found in the bottom ashes after coke and coal burning as well as of Halowax 1000 and 1099 formulations.

Accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) has been applied to the quantitative extraction of organochlorine compounds (OCs), including organochlorine pesticides (HCHs, DDXs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) present in both atmospheric particulate and gaseous phase. Extraction parameters such as the combination of solvents, extraction temperature, and static extraction time were investigated and optimized. Effective extraction can be carried out using a 3:1 mixture of n-hexane and acetone as extraction solvents at 100 degrees C in 20min for all the compounds studied. The entire analytical procedure developed in this study proves to be reliable as evident from the analysis of specific surrogate standards with the mean recoveries per sample being greater than 82%. The optimized method was validated using NIST-certified SRM 1649a. Semi-volatile OCs, in the atmosphere of Singapore were quantified using the optimized ASE method together with GC-MS. Total average concentrations of SigmaHCHs, SigmaDDXs, and SigmaPCBs in air samples were 244.9+/-88.5pgm(-3), 7.7+/-4.1pgm(-3), and 34.1+/-19.7pgm(-3), respectively. The distribution of these compounds between the gas and particulate phase is discussed. Possible sources of atmospheric OCs are evaluated based on the molecular ratio of specific compounds and backward air trajectory analysis.

Validation of a high-throughput measurement system with microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), fully automated sample preparation device (SPD), and gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD) for the determination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in minke whale blubber was performed. PCB congeners accounting for > 95% of the total PCBs burden in blubber were efficiently extracted with a small volume (20 mL) of n-hexane using MAE due to simultaneous saponification and extraction. Further, the crude extract obtained by MAE was rapidly purified and automatically substituted to a small volume (1 mL) of toluene using SPD without using concentrators. Furthermore, the concentration of PCBs in the purified and concentrated solution was accurately determined by GC-ECD. Moreover, the result of accuracy test using a certified material (SRM 1588b; Cod liver oil) showed good agreement with the NIST certified concentration values. In addition, the method quantification limit of total-PCB in whale blubbers was 41 ng g(-1). This new measurement system for PCBs takes only four hours. Consequently, it indicated this method is the most suitable for the monitoring and screening of PCBs in the conservation of the marine ecosystem and safe distribution of foods.

An ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric method (UPLC-MS/MS) has been developed for the simultaneous determination of eight pesticide residues from seed coating in fruits, vegetable and grain. The sample was extracted by methanol-water (1:1, v/v) and determined by ultra performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry in positive mode (ESI+) and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The UPLC analyses were performed on an Acquity UPLC C18 column with gradient eluation. The utility of the method was demonstrated by the analysis of crude extracts, with no sample clean up, from soybean. The linear range was 1 - 200 microg/L. The correlation coefficients (r) were under 0.997. The average recoveries of eight pesticides in samples (from 0.006 to 1.2 mg/kg) ranged from 60% to 110%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were less than 10%. The results indicate that the method is easier, faster, more sensitive, and suitable for the qualitative and quantitative confirmation of pesticide residues from seed coating reagent in fruit, vegetable and grain samples.

A method was developed for the determination of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in soils using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE, Florisil cleanup in the extraction cell) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) on-line concentration prior to the determination by ga chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). And then 20 agricultural soil samples in Shanghai suburbs were determined. Multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) was applied to qualify and quantify the target compounds. In the different linear ranges (included in 0.001 - 0.2 mg/L) of each pesticide, the correlation coefficients were higher than 0.995. The average recoveries in spiked soils were 65.9% - 140.0% with the relative standard deviations of 1.5% - 20.3% (n = 5). The limits of detection (LOD) (S/N = 3) for these pesticides were from 0.1 to 3.0 microg/kg and the limits of quantification (LOQ) (S/N = 10)were from 0.3 to 8.0 microg/kg. Among these soils, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were detected little with a content ranges of 1.82 - 3.70 and 0.94 -9.8 microg/kg, respectively. DDTs (including 2-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-(4-chloropenyl) -1,1,1-trichloroethane (p, p'-DDT), 2,2-bis (4-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dichloro-ethylene (p,p'-DDE), 2,2-bis (4-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dichloroethane (p,p'-DDD)) were found widely with a range of 1.08 - 308.76 microg/kg and mean value of 53.28 microg/kg. The content ratio of DDT/( DDE + DDD) were less than 1.0 in 85% soil samples, indicating that DDT might come from the early days.
