There is an ongoing global effort to advance emerging perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and many of these endeavours are focused on developing new compositions, processing methods and passivation strategies. In particular, the use of passivators to reduce the defects in perovskite materials has been demonstrated to be an effective approach for enhancing the photovoltaic performance and long-term stability of PSCs. Organic passivators have received increasing attention since the late 2010s as their structures and properties can readily be modified. First, this Review discusses the main types of defect in perovskite materials and reviews their properties. We examine the deleterious impact of defects on device efficiency and stability and highlight how defects facilitate extrinsic degradation pathways. Second, the proven use of different passivator designs to mitigate these negative effects is discussed, and possible defect passivation mechanisms are presented. Finally, we propose four specific directions for future research, which, in our opinion, will be crucial for unlocking the full potential of PSCs using the concept of defect passivation., [GRAPHICS]

Significant changes have occurred in plant cell wall composition during evolution and diversification of tracheophytes. As the sister lineage to seed plants, knowledge on the cell wall of ferns is key to track evolutionary changes across tracheophytes and to understand seed plant-specific evolutionary innovations. Fern cell wall composition is not fully understood, including limited knowledge of glycoproteins such as the fern arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs). Here, we characterize the AGPs from the leptosporangiate fern genera Azolla, Salvinia, and Ceratopteris. The carbohydrate moiety of seed plant AGPs consists of a galactan backbone including mainly 1,3- and 1,3,6-linked pyranosidic galactose, which is conserved across the investigated fern AGPs. Yet, unlike AGPs of angiosperms, those of ferns contained the unusual sugar 3-O-methylrhamnose. Besides terminal furanosidic arabinose, Ara (Araf), the main linkage type of Araf in the ferns was 1,2-linked Araf, whereas in seed plants 1,5-linked Araf is often dominating. Antibodies directed against carbohydrate epitopes of AGPs supported the structural differences between AGPs of ferns and seed plants. Comparison of AGP linkage types across the streptophyte lineage showed that angiosperms have rather conserved monosaccharide linkage types; by contrast bryophytes, ferns, and gymnosperms showed more variability. Phylogenetic analyses of glycosyltransferases involved in AGP biosynthesis and bioinformatic search for AGP protein backbones revealed a versatile genetic toolkit for AGP complexity in ferns. Our data reveal important differences across AGP diversity of which the functional significance is unknown. This diversity sheds light on the evolution of the hallmark feature of tracheophytes: their elaborate cell walls.

Supramolecular self-assembly in water based on non-covalent bonding is attracting major attention due to the potential of hydrogels and aqueous polymers in biomedical applications. Although supramolecular polymerization in organic solvents is well established, the key design features, the assembly mechanisms in water and achieving control over the aggregate structures remain challenging. Here, we present the assembly and disassembly of geometrical isomers of a stiff-stilbene bis-urea amphiphile (SA) in pure water. A remarkable feature of this system is that the (E)-isomer forms supramolecular polymers in both pure water and organic solvents. Taking advantage of this unique property, the hydrophobic effect was studied by comparing the supramolecular assembly in both systems. The assembly process in water follows an enthalpy-driven nucleation-elongation (cooperative) supramolecular polymerization mechanism with a standard Gibbs free energy (Delta G degrees = -53 kJ mol(-1)) double the value of the one found in toluene. We attributed this distinctive feature to the hydrophobic effect in water. Furthermore, we discovered an isomer-dependent assembly process, which can be used to control aggregation in aqueous media. Due to the substantial geometric difference between (E)-SA and (Z)-SA, we compared their assembly in water to study the influence of different driving forces involved in the process. The supramolecular polymerization of (E)-SA was cooperatively influenced by hydrogen bonding, pi-stacking, and hydrophobic effects, whereas the assembly of (Z)-SA was mainly driven by hydrophobic effects. As a result, the fiber length of (E)-SA in water is much longer than that of (Z)-SA, presenting opportunities for geometrical control of aggregation in aqueous media. [GRAPHICS]

Molecular machines have caused one of the greatest paradigm shifts in chemistry, and by powering artificial mechanical molecular systems and enabling autonomous motion, they are expected to be at the heart of exciting new technologies. One of the biggest challenges that still needs to be addressed is designing the involved molecules to combine different orthogonally controllable functions. Here, we present a prototype of artificial molecular motors exhibiting the dual function of rotary motion and photoluminescence. Both properties are controlled by light of different wavelengths or by exploiting motors' outstanding two-photon absorption properties using low-intensity near-infrared light. This provides a noninvasive way to both locate and operate these motors in situ, essential for the application of molecular machines in complex (bio)environments.

The use of a solution process to grow perovskite thin films allows to extend the material processability. It is known that the physicochemical properties of the perovskite material can be tuned by altering the solution precursors as well as by controlling the crystal growth of the film. This advancement necessarily implies the need for an understanding of the kinetic phenomena for the thin-film formation. Therefore, in this work we review the state of the art of perovskite hybrid crystal growth, starting from a comprehensive theoretical description towards broad experimental investigations. One part of the study focuses on rapid thermal annealing as a tool to control nucleation and crystal growth. We deduce that controlling crystal growth with high-precision photonic sintering simplifies the experimental framework required to understand perovskite crystallization. These types of synthesis methods open a new empirical parameter space. All this knowledge serves to improve the perovskite synthesis and the thin films' quality, which will result in higher device performances.

Despite rapid improvements in efficiency, long-term stability remains a challenge limiting the future up-scaling of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Although several approaches have been developed to improve the stability of PSCs, applying ammonium passivation materials in bilayer configuration PSCs has drawn intensive research interest due to the potential of simultaneously improving long-term stability and boosting power conversion efficiency (PCE). This review focuses on the recent advances of improving n-i-p PSCs photovoltaic performance by employing ammonium halide-based molecular modulators. The first section briefly summarizes the challenges of perovskite materials by introducing the degradation mechanisms associated with the hygroscopic nature and ion migration issues. Then, recent reports regarding the roles of overlayers formed from ammonium-based passivation agents are discussed on the basis of ligand and halide effects. This includes both the formation of 2D perovskite films as well as purely organic passivating layers. Finally, the last section provides future perspectives on the use of organic ammonium halides within bilayer-architecture PSCs to improve the photovoltaic performances. Overall, this review provides a roadmap on current demands and future research directions of molecular modulators to address the critical limitations of PSCs, to mitigate the major barriers on the pathway toward future up-scaling applications.

Over the past three decades, dye-sensitized solar cells (i. e. Gratzel cells) have evolved from a pioneering concept of molecular photovoltaics to large-scale industrial deployment. In this review article, we provide a historical overview of the developments with a focus on the scientific advancements that have set the stage for this technology to emerge and thrive. This involves insights into the (photo)electrochemistry of the underlying processes, molecular engineering of dyes, redox shuttles, and hole-transporting materials, as well as their implementation into solar cells. We further outline applications and future perspectives, involving the long-lasting objective to develop efficient solid-state alternatives to conventional dye-sensitized solar cells.

We present a rare case series of several patients who accidentally ingested the same alkaline substance in different doses.Methods: We investigated four patients with accidental ingestion of dishwashing liquid. All patients underwent gastroscopy within 24h after inpatient admission. Gastroesophageal lesions were classified according to the Zargar classification for corrosive ingestions.Results: Esophagogastric lesions were predominantly found at the distal esophagus and the small curvature of the stomach. The severity of these lesions ranged from mild erosions (Zargar 2A) to marked necrosis (Zargar 3A). Our data suggest that the degree of these lesions correlated with the amount of ingested toxin and duration of the inpatient stay. However, a low symptom severity or inconspicuous otolaryngologic examination did not exclude severe gastroesophageal lesions.Conclusion: Our data suggest that the severity of gastroesophageal lesions correlates with the amount of ingested alkaline substance. Symptom burden and an otolaryngologic examination are not sufficiently predictive for the severity of gastroesophageal lesions. The composition and quantity of the swallowed liquid should be determined.Keywords
