An analysis of IBM's leadership role in the PC market starts with describing the initial success of the IBM PC family. IBM was able to capture 25 percent of the 1983 $5.2 billion micro market through introduction of innovative hardware and marketing strategies. However from 1983 to 1987, IBM has been losing market share. Analysis reveals that market demand for IBM products fell, and some customers turned to clone developers. Some conclusions suggest that IBM can regain market leadership by introducing new enhancements or value-added systems for current product lines. IBM could also provide and upgrade path and provide better marketing strategies for dealer support and distribution. A sidebar on the IBM PC's introduction is included.
