Professional caregivers often face complex situations in which they need the support of a colleague or a specialist. This is especially necessary for caregivers during their training or with less practice in certain tasks. Due to time and space restrictions, colleagues or specialists are not always available for local support. Remote support by streaming videos to a remote helper has been discussed in healthcare domains as a so-called teleconsultation. However, little is known about how to apply teleconsultation in care. We conducted a study with caregivers and remote helpers to compare head mounted devices (HMDs) for teleconsultation in care to two alternative solutions using smartphones. We found that despite lacking familiarity, HMDs have good potential for remote support in care, and that creating video streams with smartphones is not preferable for teleconsultations. We suggest that ideal support needs to balance freedom and guidance and suggest how such support needs to be further explored.

Selling highly configurable or complex products in online markets has been difficult as they often require intensive consultation time which currently takes place in a physical store. The consultation process has various facets that could possibly benefit from digital solutions. As a first step in our research process, we conducted an ethnographic observation in a furniture store to analyze current sales and consultation processes. Based on our findings, we derive several requirements which can guide the design of IT solutions to digitalize those processes. Additionally, we propose an augmented reality system offering various benefits to both consultants in stores as well as customers at home.

Existing literature talks about what is reflected on in terms of examples, such as reflecting on financial expenditures, lifestyle, professional growth, etc. In this paper, we give a name to this: the reflection object. This paper develops the name and concept “reflection object” based on activity theory, reflection theory, and design-oriented theoretical works on technologies for reflection; as well as based on our understanding of designing for reflection from own past, previously published empirical and design-based research. We develop four themes for design-relevant considerations around the reflection object. The four themes are i) identifying the reflection object, ii) identifying explanatory contextual information about the object, iii) the object's development in time and iv) the object's representation. The theme of the object’s development in time, including what should change, how this would be measurable, and procedural aspects of bringing about this change, points particularly at an opportunity for future research, as it addresses that explicit support for transformation is the weakest point in existing reflection technologies. For practitioners, we have instantiated the above four themes as four sets of questions, to be iteratively used throughout design., This is a work-in-progress/pre-print.

Nowadays, professional caregivers need to provide care in less and less time, while quality requirements are increasing. Therefore, access to information and guidance need to be improved. One solution to support caregivers is the Care Lenses which support caregivers during everyday care with Augmented Reality (AR). AR may provide additional information, guidance and remote support. While technology is not always the best solution for such a difficult and manifold problem, extensive evaluations are needed in order to investigate the potential of AR in everyday care context. In this Paper we summarize perceptions of 25 caregivers, who were participating in our study, using Care Lenses in a simulated everyday care situation. It shows AR is able to support caregiver during their work and what kind of problems might occur during the introduction into professional care.

HMDs for mixed reality are receiving more and more attention in research and practice, as hardware is advancing and becoming affordable for the public.With this process, questions arise on the acceptance of such HMDs in practice, especially when it comes to wearing them in social settings. Existing work shows social acceptance of HMDs is an important factor. While this has been explored for larger (public) groups and VR HMDs, little work is available on the use of AR HMDs in smaller social settings. In this paper, we look at HMD wearers’ perceptions of social acceptance and provide suggestions how to deal with these.

For over 25 years, the ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work (GROUP) has been and will continue to be the premier venue for research on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, Human--Computer Interaction, Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning, and Socio-Technical Studies. The three papers in this special issue demonstrate GROUP's continued commitment to diverse research approaches, emerging technologies, and collaborative work. Most work is done on individual e.g. augmented reality glasses to fulfill tasks, while the technology has great potential for cooperative tasks as well. In this paper, we present a visual search experiment that was conducted in a cooperative mixed reality setting with Microsoft HoloLens devices. Participants were given search tasks representing typical challenges of cooperative mixed reality tasks in practice. The aim of the experiment was to explore how the participants cooperate, and to derive design knowledge for supporting these tasks with augmented reality devices.

Projection-based Augmented Reality (AR) might change the interactions with digital systems in future work environments. A lot of stationary projection-based AR assistive systems have been presented that might support future work processes. However, not much research has been done beyond stationary settings. With moving towards mobile settings, fast and robust object recognition algorithms are required that allow real-time tracking of physical objects as targets for the projected digital overlay. With this work, we present a portable projection-based AR platform that recognizes objects in real time and overlays physical objects with in-situ projections of digital content. We consider our system as a precursor to a future mobile projection-based assistive system. By presenting the system, we want to start a discussion in the HCI community about the potential of mobile projection-based AR in future work environments.

Dieser Artikel stellt einen Ansatz vor, in dem mit Augmented Reality die Ausbildung von Pflegekräften und anderen im Gesundheitswesen tätigen Personen unterstützt werden soll. Mittels zwei Szenarien wird aufgezeigt, wie diese Unterstützung im Alltag genutzt werden kann. Die Verwendbarkeit und der potentielle Nutzen des Systems wurden mithilfe der Szenarien in einer Evaluation überprüft. Hier zeigte sich, dass die Probanden trotz einer für sie neuen Technologie in der Lage waren die Testaufgaben erfolgreich abzuschließen. Die veränderte Lernsituation wurde als positiv empfunden, dabei haben sich aber auch Verbesserungsvorschläge ergeben, die zu einer weiterführenden Entwicklung des vorhandenen Systems motivieren.

In this paper we present work done in a project that uses AR technology in intensive care. Our work shows how an advanced technology like AR can be established into professional care by pointing at aspects of our work that contributed to the identification of meaningful use cases and the acceptance of the technology among care staff. We also show what kind of challenges the introduction of AR in a domain like intensive home care causes and how we dealt with them. The aim of the paper is to peal out factors that may help in similar endeavours and lead to interesting discussions at the workshop.

Museen sind zunehmend in sozialen Medien präsent, um sich neue Zielgruppen zu erschließen und Nutzer aktiver in die Museumsarbeit zu integrieren. Gleichwohl haben die Gestalter solcher Auftritte oft kaum Kenntnisse über die Ansprüche ihrer Nutzer. In diesem Beitrag wird eine Studie mit 16 (po-tenziellen) Nutzern der Auftritte zweier Museen in Facebook beschrieben, anhand derer Nutzerbedarfe identifiziert werden. Der Beitrag benennt hierzu vier Dimensionen (Themen) dieser Ansprüche, leitet eine Nutzertypologie ab und beschreibt Gestaltungsempfehlungen auf Basis der Erkenntnisse aus der Studie.

In this paper, we describe different modes of collaborative reflection as processes of learning at the workplace. We explain why reflection is a decisive means of learning and - based on the modes we describe - how groups of people can be supported in reflection together. For this, we describe how scheduled, concurrent and spontaneous collaborative reflection can be supported by articulation, guidance and synergizing.
