Euphyllophytes encompass almost all extant plants, including two sister clades, ferns and seed plants. Decoding genomes of ferns is the key to deep insight into the origin of euphyllophytes and the evolution of seed plants. Here we report a chromosome-level genome assembly of Adiantum capillus-veneris L., a model homosporous fern. This fern genome comprises 30 pseudochromosomes with a size of 4.8-gigabase and a contig N50 length of 16.22 Mb. Gene co-expression network analysis uncovered that homospore development in ferns has relatively high genetic similarities with that of the pollen in seed plants. Analysing fern defence response expands understanding of evolution and diversity in endogenous bioactive jasmonates in plants. Moreover, comparing fern genomes with those of other land plants reveals changes in gene families important for the evolutionary novelties within the euphyllophyte clade. These results lay a foundation for studies on fern genome evolution and function, as well as the origin and evolution of euphyllophytes.

In this paper, we demonstrate that when saddle point reduction is applicable, there is a clear relationship between the Morse index and the critical groups before and after the reduction. As an application of this result, we use saddle point reduction along with the critical point theorem to show the existence of periodic solutions in second-order Hamiltonian systems.

Conjugated polymers (CPs) as photocatalysts have evoked substantial interest. Their geometries and physical (e.g., chemical and thermal stability and solubility), optical (e.g., light absorption range), and electronic properties (e.g., charge carrier mobility, redox potential, and exciton binding energy) can be easily tuned via structural design. In addition, they are of light weight (i.e., mainly composed of C, N, O, and S). To improve the photocatalytic performance of CPs and better understand the catalytic mechanisms, many strategies with respect to material design have been proposed. These include tuning the bandgap, enlarging the surface area, enabling more efficient separation of electron–hole pairs, and enhancing the charge carrier mobility. In particular, donor–acceptor (D–A) polymers were demonstrated as a promising platform to develop high-performance photocatalysts due to their easily tunable bandgaps, high charge carrier mobility, and efficient intramolecular charge transfer. In this minireview, recent advances of D–A polymers in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution are summarized with a particular focus on modulating the optical and electronic properties of CPs by varying the acceptor units. The challenges and prospects associated with D–A polymer-based photocatalysts are described as well.

With the in-depth research and continuous exploration of English translation skill patterns by multimodal networks, the scope of English translation skill analysis has been extended to other aspects besides words, and the traditional single-mode English translation skill analysis has gradually changed into a systematic English translation skill analysis that integrates language, images, music, and other symbols. From the perspective of situational teaching, this paper studies the skills and modes of English translation by multimodal network. The research shows that 30 books are randomly selected from preschool children’s books, primary school books, and junior high school books, among which the highest proportion of multimodal books is 82%, 57%, and 54%, respectively, and the proportion of multimodal network books among 120 literature books is 79%. Translators have a full understanding of the translated content in situational teaching, but in the actual process of translation, they will inevitably face the situation of language integration and word order adjustment. If translators have a certain understanding of the corresponding English translation skills, they can lay a good foundation for English translation skills and ensure the accuracy of translation.

Affected by confined aquifer, basal inrush accidents caused by excavation are common in foundation pits, and accurate estimation of the safety thickness of the base is a big concern of engineers. In this paper, a three-dimensional failure mechanism of base inrush was constructed for a rectangular foundation pit. In this mechanism, the strength of the soil mass was assumed to be nonhomogeneous along the depth, and the soil-mass failure satisfied the linear and nonlinear Mohr–Coulomb strength criteria. Then, based on the limit equilibrium theory, the prediction method for the safety thickness of the base against confined water inrush was deduced, and a comparison with existing research works was conducted. Furthermore, the influence laws of soil strength parameters, pit design parameters, and confined water pressure on the critical safety thickness were analyzed. The results show that the critical safety thickness of the base is positively correlated with nonlinear coefficient and confined water pressure but negatively correlated with cohesion, internal friction angle, nonhomogeneity coefficient, and unit weight. The soil strength is a key factor affecting the base safety thickness, which should be paid enough attention to in engineering design and construction. The research findings in this paper can provide a theoretical reference for the prevention and control of basal inrush accidents in confined water strata.

AimsClinical application of cellular therapy for cardiac regeneration is significantly hampered by the low retention of engrafted cells, mainly attributable to the poor microenvironment dominated by inflammation and oxidative stress in the host's infarcted myocardium. This study aims at investigating whether liver X receptor (LXR) agonist T0901317 will improve survival of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) after transplantation into infarcted hearts.ResultsNoninvasive in vivo bioluminescence imaging and histological staining showed that LXR agonist T0901317 improved the retention and survival of intramyocardially injected AD-MSCs. Moreover, combined therapy of LXR agonist and AD-MSCs inhibited host cardiomyocyte apoptosis, reduced fibrosis, and improved cardiac function, while it concomitantly decreased inflammatory cytokines (e.g., tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6) and increased growth factor (e.g., vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor) expression in infarct myocardium. To reveal possible mechanisms, AD-MSCs were subjected to hypoxia/serum deprivation (H/SD) injury to simulate ischemic conditions in vivo. The LXR agonist (10(-7) mM) improved AD-MSC survival under H/SD condition. Western blot revealed that the LXR agonist reduced TLR4, TRAF-6, and MyD88 protein expression, inhibited IκBα phosphorylation and NF-κB-p65 nuclear translocation, which resulted in accelerated Keap-1 protein degradation, enhanced Nrf-2 nuclear translocation, and increased HO-1 protein expression.Innovation and conclusionLXR agonist can enhance the functional survival of transplanted AD-MSCs in infarcted myocardium, at least partially, via modulation of the TLR4/NF-κB and Keap-1/Nrf-2 signaling pathways. Moreover, combined therapy of LXR agonist and AD-MSCs has a synergetic effect on cardiac repair and functional improvement after infarction.
