Hyperspectral imaging shows promise for surgical applications to non-invasively provide spatially-resolved, spectral information. For calibration purposes, a white reference image of a highly-reflective Lambertian surface should be obtained under the same imaging conditions. Standard white references are not sterilizable, and so are unsuitable for surgical environments. We demonstrate the necessity for in situ white references and address this by proposing a novel, sterile, synthetic reference construction algorithm. The use of references obtained at different distances and lighting conditions to the subject were examined. Spectral and color reconstructions were compared with standard measurements qualitatively and quantitatively, using $\Delta E$ and normalised RMSE respectively. The algorithm forms a composite image from a video of a standard sterile ruler, whose imperfect reflectivity is compensated for. The reference is modelled as the product of independent spatial and spectral components, and a scalar factor accounting for gain, exposure, and light intensity. Evaluation of synthetic references against ideal but non-sterile references is performed using the same metrics alongside pixel-by-pixel errors. Finally, intraoperative integration is assessed though cadaveric experiments. Improper white balancing leads to increases in all quantitative and qualitative errors. Synthetic references achieve median pixel-by-pixel errors lower than 6.5% and produce similar reconstructions and errors to an ideal reference. The algorithm integrated well into surgical workflow, achieving median pixel-by-pixel errors of 4.77%, while maintaining good spectral and color reconstruction., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) captures a greater level of spectral detail than traditional optical imaging, making it a potentially valuable intraoperative tool when precise tissue differentiation is essential. Hardware limitations of current optical systems used for handheld real-time video HSI result in a limited focal depth, thereby posing usability issues for integration of the technology into the operating room. This work integrates a focus-tunable liquid lens into a video HSI exoscope, and proposes novel video autofocusing methods based on deep reinforcement learning. A first-of-its-kind robotic focal-time scan was performed to create a realistic and reproducible testing dataset. We benchmarked our proposed autofocus algorithm against traditional policies, and found our novel approach to perform significantly ($p<0.05$) better than traditional techniques ($0.070\pm.098$ mean absolute focal error compared to $0.146\pm.148$). In addition, we performed a blinded usability trial by having two neurosurgeons compare the system with different autofocus policies, and found our novel approach to be the most favourable, making our system a desirable addition for intraoperative HSI., Comment: To be presented at MICCAI 2023

Metafibers expand the functionalities of conventional optical fibers to unprecedented nanoscale light manipulations by integrating metasurfaces on the fiber tips, becoming an emerging light-coupling platform for both nanoscience and fiber optics communities. Mostly exploring the isolated bare fibers, current metafibers remain as proof-of-concept demonstrations due to a lack of standard interfaces with the universal fiber networks. Here, we develop new methodologies to fabricate well-defined plasmonic metasurfaces directly on the end facets of commercial single mode fiber jumpers using standard planar technologies and provide a first demonstration of their practical applications in the nonlinear optics regime. Featuring plug-play connections with fiber circuitry and arbitrary metasurfaces landscapes, the metafibers with tunable plasmonic resonances are implemented into fiber laser cavities, yielding all-fiber sub-picosecond (minimum 513 fs) soliton mode locked lasers at optical wavelengths of 1.5 micrometer and 2 micrometer, demonstrating their unusual polarimetric nonlinear transfer functions and superior saturation absorption responses. Novel insights into the physical mechanisms behind the saturable absorption of plasmonic metasurfaces are provided. The nanofabrication process flow is compatible with existing cleanroom technologies, offering metafibers an avenue to be a regular member of functionalized fiber components. Recently, high-order topological insulators (HOTIs), accompanied by topologically nontrivial boundary states with codimension larger than one, have been extensively explored because of unconventional bulk-boundary correspondences. As a novel type of HOTIs, very recent works have explored the square-root HOTIs, where the topological nontrivial nature of bulk bands stems from the square of the Hamiltonian. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate 2D square-root HOTIs in photonic waveguide arrays written in glass using femtosecond laser direct-write techniques. Edge and corner states are clearly observed through visible light spectra. The dynamical evolutions of topological boundary states are experimentally demonstrated, which further verify the existence of in-gap edge and corner states. The robustness of these edge and corner states is revealed by introducing defects and disorders into the bulk structures. Our studies provide an extended platform for realizing light manipulation and stable photonic devices.

Encoding information in light polarization is of great importance in facilitating optical data storage (ODS) for information security and data storage capacity escalation. However, despite recent advances in nanophotonic techniques vastly enhancing the feasibility of applying polarization channels, the data fidelity in reconstructed bits has been constrained by severe crosstalks occurring between varied polarization angles during data recording and reading process, which gravely hindered the utilization of this technique in practice. In this paper, we demonstrate an ultra-low crosstalk polarization-encoding multilayer optical data storage technique for high-fidelity data recording and retrieving by utilizing a nanofibre-based nanocomposite film involving highly aligned gold nanorods (GNRs). With parallelizing the gold nanorods in the recording medium, the information carrier configuration minimizes miswriting and misreading possibilities for information input and output, respectively, compared with its randomly self-assembled counterparts. The enhanced data accuracy has significantly improved the bit recall fidelity that is quantified by a correlation coefficient higher than 0.99. It is anticipated that the demonstrated technique can facilitate the development of multiplexing ODS for a greener future.

Dynamical materials that capable of responding to optical stimuli have always been pursued for designing novel photonic devices and functionalities, of which the response speed and amplitude as well as integration adaptability and energy effectiveness are especially critical. Here we show ultrafast pulse generation by exploiting the ultrafast and sensitive nonlinear dynamical processes in tunably solution-processed colloidal epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) transparent conducting oxide (TCO) nanocrystals (NCs), of which the potential respond response speed is >2 THz and modulation depth is ~23% pumped at ~0.7 mJ/cm2, benefiting from the highly confined geometry in addition to the ENZ enhancement effect. These ENZ NCs may offer a scalable and printable material solution for dynamic photonic and optoelectronic devices.

Monochalcogenides of germanium (or tin) are considered as stable isoelectronic and isostructural analogue of black phosphorous. Their two-dimensional (2D) forms have been just predicted to shown strong thickness-dependent physical properties, and even indirect to direct band gap crossover at the monolayer limit. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of atomically thin GeSe by direct sonication-assisted exfoliation of bulk microcrystalline powders in solvents. The exfoliated few-layer GeSe sheets characterize high crystallinity with lateral sizes over 100 nm and, importantly, strong resistance against oxidation and degradation in ambient conditions. Density functional theory calculation combined with optical characterizations confirm the layer-number dependent optical bandgap, which, for few-layer sheets, is optimal for solar light harvesting, and promising for relevant applications, such as optoelectronics and photonics.

In this paper, several experiments were conducted to further clarify the formation mechanism of self organized void array induced by a single laser beam, including energy-related experiments, refractive-index-contrast-related experiments, depth-related experiments and effective-numerical-aperture experiment. These experiments indicate that the interface spherical aberration is indeed responsible for the formation of void arrays.
