Food grains in India achieved an all-time high production (310.74 mt) during 2020-21. Varietal and seed replacement rates played an important role in achieving this milestone. A total of 1646 varieties of food crops comprising 1273 of cereals and 373 of pulses were released from 2011 to 2022. Of these 977 varieties consisting of cereals (667) and pulses (310) have been inducted into the seed chain during 2020-21. New breeding technonologies such as bio-fortification of food crops and marker-assisted breeding were applied to improve crop varieties with respect to specific desirable traits. A total of 65 bio-fortified varieties comprising rice (8), wheat (28), maize (14), pearl millet (9), finger millet (3), little millet (1) and lentil (2) have been released with improved levels of proteins, essential amino acids (lysine, tryptophan), vitamins (pro-vitamin A) and micro/macro-nutrients (zinc, iron, calcium). Marker-assisted breeding adopting foreground and background selections with targeted gene(s) utilizing molecular markers such as RFLPs, SSRs, CAPs, STS and INDEL resulted in to the development and release of 66 cultivars comprising rice (43), wheat (5), maize (10), pearl millet (2) and chickpea (6) with one/and or combination of traits such as tolerance to biotic/abiotic stresses, herbicide tolerance, nutrient use efficiency, earliness, nutritional and other quality traits. These non-genetically modified crop varieties are expected to play vital role in achieving food and nutrition security in India. The paper also provides insight in to the maintenance breeding of food crops. The analysis of seed requirement and availability during 2010-11 to 2020-21 revealed that seed requirements for cereals and pulses have increased consistently by 31.6% and 62.3%, from 186.8 to 245.8 lakh q and 22.3 to 36.2 lakh q, respectively. The production of rice, wheat, maize, pearl millet and pulses during 2020-21 increased over that of 2010-11 by 27.4%, 26.0%, 45.2%, 4.4% and 41.3%, respectively. The productivity of sorghum was higher by 18.9% over that of 2010-11 but production decreased by 31.7% on account of a reduction in acreage by 42.5% during the corresponding period. The net per capita availability of food grains increased, by 17.2% from 159.5 kg to 187.0 kg during this period. The cereals and pulses production needs to be up-scaled by 5.3% and 24.4% to meet the demand by 2030 from 285.28 mt and 25.46 mt, respectively, in 2020-21, with almost the similar acreage, degrading and depleting natural resources, thus, requiring a greater focus on enhancing yield/ha. Crop-specific breeding programmes should be accelerated with the adoption of new technologies like GM, gene editing, marker-assisted selection and speed breeding to address the challenges of climate change and degrading natural sources.

Aim: To systematically investigate the timing of encapsulation of necrotic collections in acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP) using contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT). Methods: This retrospective study comprised consecutive patients of ANP who underwent CECT of the abdomen between the second and fourth weeks of illness. Number and site of collections and presence and completeness of the wall (defined as a thin smooth enhancing rim more than 1 mm in thickness) were documented. Results: A total of 195 patients of ANP were included. Seven hundred seventy-three collections were evaluated in 284 CECT scans. The most common site of the collection was anterior pararenal space (n=290, 37.5%). The mean maximum dimension of the collection was 8.1 cm (range, 3.1-16 cm). Two hundred twentytwo (28.7%) collections had a complete wall. The mean interval to complete wall maturation was 18 days (range, 8-28). Overall, 13.3%, 37.1%, and 56.2% of the collections showed complete encapsulation in the second, third, and fourth weeks, respectively. Conclusions: Our study suggests that a significant proportion of necrotic collections show complete encapsulation within 4 weeks of the onset of ANP.

The ability to associate temporally segregated information and assign positive or negative valence to environmental cues is paramount for survival. Studies have shown that different basolateral amygdala (BLA) projections are potentiated following reward or punishment learning(1–7). However, we do not yet understand how valence specific information is routed to the BLA neurons with the appropriate downstream projections. Nor do we understand how to reconcile the subsecond timescales of synaptic plasticity(8–11) with the longer timescales separating the predictive cues from their outcomes. Here, we demonstrate that neurotensin (NT) neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVT) projecting to the BLA (PVT-BLA:NT) mediate valence assignment by exerting concentration-dependent modulation in BLA during associative learning. We found that optogenetic activation of the PVT-BLA:NT projection promotes reward learning, while PVT-BLA projection-specific Nt gene knockout augments punishment learning. Using genetically encoded calcium and NT sensors, we further revealed that both calcium dynamics within the PVT-BLA:NT projection and NT concentrations in the BLA are enhanced after reward learning and reduced after punishment learning. Finally, we showed that CRISPR-mediated knockout of the Nt gene in the PVT-BLA pathway blunts BLA neural dynamics and attenuates the preference to active behavioral strategies to reward and punishment predictive cues. Taken together, we have identified NT as a neuropeptide that signals valence in the BLA, and showed that NT is a critical neuromodulator that orchestrates positive and negative valence assignment in amygdala neurons by extending valence-specific plasticity to behaviorally-relevant timescales.

Fecal sludge management (FSM) stakeholders have hitherto been unable to benefit from analytical approaches based on systems thinking principles, as studies utilizing theoretical frameworks to analyze governance structures remain in a nascent stage. One such prominent framework is the Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), which has no FSM-related applications in the literature. Relying on official documents such as ministerial ordinances, this study conducts a multistage STPA for a well-established and sustainable FSM system, that is, the Johkasou system in Japan. The analysis maps the key stakeholders and their interactions to comprehensively identify potential risks and corresponding novel indicators to help manage risks within the Johkasou system. The features of governance structure thus obtained also highlight the steps necessary to address governance issues for Japan and other countries attempting to establish sustainable FSM. The study extends the STPA literature by providing a substantial validity of STPA’s capability for analyzing the FSM governance structure against robust and independent criteria that define the objectives of a “good” governance structure, that is, efficiency, accountability, and legitimacy. The STPA results identify novel leading indicators to guide Japanese policymakers to improve FSM management. The results from STPA also effectively provide valuable insights for other countries by highlighting the various features contributing to an effective governance structure of the Johkasou, such as centralized decision-making in a combination of a hierarchy of goals to establish a clear division of responsibility across various actors. The study also notes potential challenges for field implementation of STPA and discusses directions that future work could explore.

Paracetamol is a popular and safe drug preferred by victims of pain or pyrexia; however, its overdose or abuse is a growing concern worldwide. Here the hepatoprotective effect of an ethnomedicinal plant Drynaria quercifolia against paracetamol‑induced toxicity in murine model is demonstrated. This fern, native to tropical countries including the Northeast India, is used by local tribes to treat inflammatory conditions. Paracetamol 500 mg/kg body weight was orally administered on alternate days for a period of 21days to mimic a chronic overdose. Drynaria quercifolia acetone extract (DQA) treatment interspaced with paracetamol significantly decreased serum biomarkers of hepatotoxicity (ALT, AST and ALP) renal toxicity (urea, creatinine), lipid peroxidation level, histological damage in liver and kidney. The protein and mRNA expressions of the transcription factor, Nrf2, and its target antioxidant genes (SOD1, CAT and GST) as well as activities of these antioxidant enzymes were downregulated by paracetamol administration but significantly recovered following the DQA treatment (Tab. 3, Fig. 5, Ref. 31). Climate changes effects, food security and self-sufficiency targets in densely populated countries like Bangladesh forced excessive human activities on vegetable farmland, and heavy metal contamination may result. An analysis of three toxic heavy metals, such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr), was conducted to determine their source and associated health risks in vegetables, taking into account source pathways, fertilizers/pesticides and soil, using 12 sampling points at two different locations in two different Flam-Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (F-AAS) and Graphite Furnace-AAS (GF-AAS) modes. In soil and fertilizers/pesticides, the mean concentration of heavy metals declined in the same order of Cr > Pb > Cd. For vegetables, the mean concentration decreased in the order of Pb > Cr > Cd with some extra quantity of Pb compared with an allowable limit of World Health Organization (WHO) predicting industrial and fertilizer usage impact on location B. For both locations, the quality indexing of soil projected low levels of contamination with insignificant ecological risks. The toxic metal transfer to vegetables followed the order Cd > Pb > Cr, the same for both locations but higher at location B. However, the toxic metals uptake through vegetables was much less than maximum tolerable daily intake. Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is an epigenetic disorder of imprinting on the chromosome 11p15 region that presents with clinical features, such as macroglossia, abdominal wall defects, neonatal hypoglycemia, hemihypertrophy, and embryonal tumors. Phyllodes tumors (PTs) are rare fibroepithelial tumors that account for 0.3% to 1% of breast tumors and present in women aged 35 to 55 years. Here we describe a rare case of metastatic malignant phyllodes tumor in a 27-year-old woman with BWS and uniparental disomy (UPD) of chromosome 11p15.5. To our knowledge, this is the first case report in literature to describe metastatic malignant phyllodes tumor in a woman with BWS.

The application of coloring to food is widespread around the globe. Some of the artificial food colorants are highly carcinogenic. Exploration of new natural colorants has therefore been under research. The present study was aimed to evaluate Hibiscus rosasinensis flower as a potential feedstock for natural colorant. Crude anthocyanin was first extracted from Hibiscus rosasinensis flower using a Soxhlet apparatus with ethanol as the solvent. Flower to solvent ratio was found to affect the extraction largely. A ratio of 1:20 was found to give the highest fraction of extract. The cytotoxicity of crude anthocyanin extract was subsequently determined by Brine Shrimp Lethality Test. The LC50 value for crude anthocyanin extract was 2332 μg/ml, which is higher than the required minimum threshold value. Hence the findings of present study would be useful towards the application of H. rosasinensis flower as a feedstock for natural colorant to food. Generally, hypertension control programs are cost-effective, including in low- and middle-income countries, but country governments and civil society are not likely to support hypertension control programs unless value is demonstrated in terms of public health benefits, budget impact, and value-for-investment for the individual country context. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) established a standard, simplified Global HEARTS approach to hypertension control, including preferred antihypertensive medicines and blood pressure measurement devices. The objective of this study is to report on health economic studies of HEARTS hypertension control package cost (especially medication costs), cost-effectiveness, and budget impact and describe mathematical models designed to translate hypertension control program data into the optimal approach to hypertension care service delivery and financing, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Early results suggest that HEARTS hypertension control interventions are either cost-saving or cost-effective, that the HEARTS package is affordable at between US$ 18-44 per person treated per year, and that antihypertensive medicines could be priced low enough to reach a global standard of an average

Early-life gut microbial colonisation is known to influence host physiology and development, shaping its phenotype. The developing gastro-intestinal tract of neonatal piglets provides a “window of opportunity” for programming their intestinal microbiota composition and corresponding intestinal development. Here, we investigated the impact of early feeding on jejunum and colon microbiota composition, and intestinal maturation in suckling piglets. From two days of age, early-fed (EF; n = 6 litters) piglets had access to solid feed containing a mixture of fibres till weaning (day29) in addition to sow’s milk, whereas the control (CON; n = 6 litters) piglets exclusively fed on sow’s milk. Early feeding elicited a significant impact on the colon microbiota, whereas no such effect was seen in the jejunal and ileal microbiota. Quantified eating behavioural scores could significantly explain the variation in microbiota composition of EF piglets and support their classification into good, moderate, and bad eaters. Members of the Lachnospiraceae family, and the genera Eubacterium, Prevotella, and Ruminococcus were quantitatively associated with eating scores. EF piglets were found to have a decreased pH in caecum and colon, which coincided with increased short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations. Moreover, they also had increased weights and lengths of several intestinal tract segments, as well as a decreased villus-crypt ratio in jejunal mucosa and an increased abundance of proliferative cells in colon mucosa. The approaches in this study indicate that early feeding of a mixed-fibre (pre-weaning) diet changes the microbiota composition, pH, and fermentation products in the distal gut of piglets, while it also alters both macroscopic and microscopic intestinal measurements. These results exemplify the potential of early feeding to modulate intestinal development in young piglets.

Early life microbiome perturbations can have important effects on host development, physiology and behaviour. In this longitudinal study, we evaluated the impact of early feeding on gut microbiome colonization in neonatal piglets. Early-fed (EF) piglets had access to a customized fibrous diet from 2 days after birth until weaning in addition to mother's milk, whereas control piglets suckled mother's milk only. Rectal swabs were collected at multiple time points until 6 weeks of age to investigate microbiota development using 16S rRNA gene profiling. The dynamic pre-weaning microbiota colonization was followed by a relatively stable post-weaning microbiota, represented by Prevotella, Roseburia, Faecalibacterium, Ruminococcus, Megasphaera, Catenibacterium and Subdoligranulum. EF piglets showed an accelerated microbiota maturation, characterized by increased microbial diversity, pre-weaning emergence of post-weaning-associated microbes and a more rapid decline of typical pre-weaning microbes. Furthermore, the individual eating behaviour scores of piglets quantitatively correlated with their accelerated microbiome. Importantly, EF piglets displayed a smoother relative weight gain and tended to reach a higher relative weight gain, in addition to reduced diarrhoea scores in the first week post-weaning. Overall, these findings demonstrate the beneficial impact of early feeding on microbiota development as well as pig health and performance during the weaning transition.

The stringent response is a stress signalling system mediated by the alarmones guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp) and guanosine pentaphosphate (pppGpp) in response to nutrient deprivation. Recent research highlights the complexity and broad range of functions that these alarmones control. This Review provides an update on our current understanding of the enzymes involved in ppGpp, pppGpp and guanosine 5'-monophosphate 3'-diphosphate (pGpp) (collectively (pp)pGpp) turnover, including those shown to produce pGpp and its analogue (pp)pApp. We describe the well-known interactions with RNA polymerase as well as a broader range of cellular target pathways controlled by (pp)pGpp, including DNA replication, transcription, nucleotide synthesis, ribosome biogenesis and function, as well as lipid metabolism. Finally, we review the role of ppGpp and pppGpp in bacterial pathogenesis, providing examples of how these nucleotides are involved in regulating many aspects of virulence and chronic infection.

Due to the absence of adequate control at different stages of complex manufacturing process, material and geometric properties of composite structures are often uncertain. For a secure and safe design, tracking the impact of these uncertainties on the structural responses is of utmost significance. Composite materials, commonly adopted in various modern aerospace, marine, automobile and civil structures, are often susceptible to low-velocity impact caused by various external agents. Here, along with a critical review, we present machine learning based probabilistic and non-probabilistic (fuzzy) low–velocity impact analyses of composite laminates including a detailed deterministic characterization to systematically investigate the consequences of source- uncertainty. While probabilistic analysis can be performed only when complete statistical description about the input variables are available, the non-probabilistic analysis can be executed even in the presence of incomplete statistical input descriptions with sparse data. In this study, the stochastic effects of stacking sequence, twist angle, oblique impact, plate thickness, velocity of impactor and density of impactor are investigated on the crucial impact response parameters such as contact force, plate displacement, and impactor displacement. For efficient and accurate computation, a hybrid polynomial chaos based Kriging (PC-Kriging) approach is coupled with in-house finite element codes for uncertainty propagation in both the probabilistic and non- probabilistic analyses. The essence of this paper is a critical review on the hybrid machine learning algorithms followed by detailed numerical investigation in the probabilistic and non-probabilistic regimes to access the performance of such hybrid algorithms in comparison to individual algorithms from the viewpoint of accuracy and computational efficiency.

Shrimp is one of the major export products in South Asian countries and also an eminent source of nutrition for humans. Hence, any negative effect of this industry may affect not only the country’s economy but also human health. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to assess heavy metal contamination and associated human health risks in cultured shrimp (Penaeus monodon) and aquaculture sludge collected from three shrimp farms of the Cox’s Bazar district, Bangladesh. The results showed that among the eight metals studied, Pb (17.75 ± 1.5 mg/kg) and Cu (9.43 ± 2.8 mg/kg) levels in all shrimp samples were higher than the recommended limit, whereas the concentrations of Cd (0.09 ± 0.03 mg/kg), Mn (4.83 ± 2.2 mg/kg), As (0.04 ± 0.02 mg/kg), Hg (0.02 ± 0.006 mg/kg), Zn (18.89 ± 2.9 mg/kg) and Cr (0.69 ± 0.6 mg/kg) were within the permissible level. The concentrations of Mn (1043.37 ± 59.8 mg/kg), Cr (30.38 ± 2.1 mg/kg), Zn (74.72 ± 1.13 mg/kg) and Cu (31.14 ± 1.4 mg/kg) in the sludge of all farms were higher than the recommended limit, whereas the concentrations of Pb (20.23 ± 1.9 mg/kg), Cd (0.09 ± 0.2 mg/kg), As (0.44 ± 0.34 mg/kg) and Hg (0.08 ± 0.02 mg/kg) in all sludge samples were lower than the threshold limits. However, the estimated daily intake (EDI), targeted hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) assessed for potential human health risk implications suggested that Pb and Cr may pose non-carcinogenic health effects, although carcinogenic risks (CR) values were acceptable for consumers. However, the pollution load index (PLI) of the studied area was below 1, which indicates low deterioration of the area. Geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and contamination factor (CF) analyses revealed that study area is unpolluted and sludge is enriched with metals in the following order: Mn > Zn > Cu > Cr > Cd > Hg > Pb > As.

The incidence of abdominal cysts in infants is 1 in 500 to 1 in 1,000 live births. Among the ovarian cysts in infants, serous cystadenoma is extremely rare with only few reported cases in the literature. Here, we report a case of a giant neonatal ovarian serous cystadenoma treated with laparoscopic cystectomy and confirmed by histopathological examination.A 27-year-old delivered a female baby with uneventful caesarean section at full term. The antenatal ultrasonography (USG) in third trimester had showed an abdominal cyst in the left side of the abdomen. Postnatal USG was suggestive of omental cyst. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan of the neonate showed a large cyst occupying the entire abdomen. On laparoscopic evaluation, a cystic mass filled with 500 mL of clear yellow fluid was seen in the left pelvic fossa. Left ovary could not be visualized separately. The right ovary, fallopian tubes, and uterus were normal. The entire cyst was removed and sent for histopathological examination. On gross examination, a unilocular cyst measuring 10×8×6.5 cm with a wall thickness of 0.2 cm was noted. On microscopic examination, the histomorphological features were consistent with serous cystadenoma of the ovary. There is a paucity of literature regarding pathological diagnosis of such cases and hence we report one such case.

Krabbe disease is a lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations in the gene that encodes galactosylceramidase, in which galactosylsphingosine (psychosine) accumulation drives demyelination in the central and peripheral nervous systems, ultimately progressing to death in early childhood. Gene therapy, alone or in combination with transplant, has been developed for almost two decades in mouse models, with increasing therapeutic benefit paralleling the improvement of next-generation adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors. This effort has recently shown remarkable efficacy in the canine model of the disease by two different groups that used either systemic or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) administration of AAVrh10 or AAV9. Building on our experience developing CSF-delivered, AAV-based drug products for a variety of neurodegenerative disorders, we conducted efficacy, pharmacology, and safety studies of AAVhu68 delivered to the CSF in two relevant natural Krabbe animal models, and in nonhuman primates. Pathogenic bacteria use a broad range of virulence factors to thrive within their host. Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, a gram-negative enteropathogen in humans, utilises a Type III secretion system to overcome the host’s innate immune response. A global regulator previously shown to be essential for virulence in Y. pseudotuberculosis is RpoN. We show here that a strain lacking RpoN has a severely reduced capacity to secrete Yop effectors. This strain has a substantially reduced expression of genes encoding structural components of the secretion apparatus, the ysc operons, while expression of genes encoding effectors and translocators is less affected. We show that RpoN regulates a complex network, where one part is suggested to contribute to inducing Type III secretion via the enhancer-binding protein GlrR/RpoN regulon. By analogy, during inducement of Type III secretion, RpoN has a positive effect on expression of the sigma factor RpoE, which also is known to act downstream of GlrR. Interestingly, we found putative RpoE binding sites upstream of the ysc operons, and also a partial rescue of Yop secretion in the rpoN mutant strain by overexpression of RpoE. Our findings suggest that the RpoN-mediated effect on expression of type III genes involves a sigma factor hierarchy, where RpoN via RpoE contributes to inducing Type III secretion.

In conventional public clouds, designing a suitable initial cluster for a given application workload is important in reducing the computational foot-print during run-time. In edge or on-premise clouds, cold-start rightsizing the cluster at the time of installation is crucial in avoiding the recurrent capital expenditure. In both these cases, rightsizing has to balance cost-performance trade-off for a given application with multiple tasks, where each task can demand multiple resources, and the cloud offers nodes with different capacity and cost. Multidimensional bin-packing can address this cold-start rightsizing problem, but assumes that every task is always active. In contrast, real-world tasks (e.g. load bursts, batch and dead-lined tasks with time-limits) may be active only during specific time-periods or may have dynamic load profiles. The cluster cost can be reduced by reusing resources via time sharing and optimal packing. This motivates our generalized problem of cold-start rightsizing for time-limited tasks: given a timeline, time-periods and resource demands for tasks, the objective is to place the tasks on a minimum cost cluster of nodes without violating node capacities at any time instance. We design a baseline two-phase algorithm that performs penalty-based mapping of task to node-type and then, solves each node-type independently. We prove that the algorithm has an approximation ratio of O(D min(m, T)), where D, m and T are the number of resources, node-types and timeslots, respectively. We then present an improved linear programming based mapping strategy, enhanced further with a cross-node-type filling mechanism. Our experiments on synthetic and real-world cluster traces show significant cost reduction by LP-based mapping compared to the baseline, and the filling mechanism improves further to produce solutions within 20% of (a lower-bound to) the optimal solution., An abridged version appears in IEEE Cloud 2021

Dioscorea bulbifera (Pita aalu) is a medicinal plant belongs to famility Dioscoreaceae, used to cure various diseases like malaria, diarrhoea, diabetes, dysentery, cancer, piles and skin infections. We designed the present study to analyse phytochemical and antibacterial activity of D. bulbifera fruit so as to conform its edible property. For this we followed phytochemical screening of the fruit extracts and found that it is consist of tannin, saponin, phenols, steroids, terpenoids and some carbohydrates in high concentration. The antibacterial activity of aqueous extract of the fruit against Streptococcus mutans pathogen was determined by using agar well diffusion, disc diffusion and broth dilution assay. From the results it was confirmed that the aqueous extract of the fruits of D. bulbifera showed high inhibition zone at 100µg/ml is 19 mm in agar well diffusion, 14 mm in disc diffusion assay. The minimum inhibitory concentratiom (MIC) of extract of D. bulbifera arranged in respect to the parts from 100 µg/ml, 200 µg/ml, 300 µg/ml, 400 µg/ml, 500µg/ml and inoculums control showed visible growth due to no antimicrobial agents, whereas the broth control showed no growth due to absence of bacteria. Presence of primary and secondary metabolites indicates the nutraceutical value of D. bulbifera fruits. So the fruits of D. bulbifera can be used as a tool against antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Single-crystal neutron diffraction investigation on Cs4(HSO4)3(H2PO4) and Cs6H(HSO4)3(H2PO4)4 superprotonic crystals, belonging to CsHSO4–CsH2PO4–H2O salt system, is under taken to elucidate the precise hydrogen atom positions in these crystals. The investigation revealed that these crystals are very sensitive to the ambient conditions and can undergo deterioration due to fluctuation in air moisture content. Cs6H(HSO4)3(H2PO4)4 crystals are more stable as compared to Cs4(HSO4)3(H2PO4). Crystal structure of Cs6H(HSO4)3(H2PO4)4 is obtained both before and after deterioration, it is found that the asymmetric O–HO hydrogen bond between the PO4 and SO4 ions of this crystal becomes stronger after deterioration. This led to the shrinkage of the unit cell, and most likely prevented further deterioration. Diabatic state model for hydrogen bonds is used to obtain the energy contour for the O–H···O hydrogen bond of Cs6H(HSO4)3(H2PO4)4 crystal. The influence of this change in the hydrogen bonding on the proton conduction ability of the crystal is discussed.

Oilseeds in India accounted for 15.7% of the total arable land during 2017-18. The present paper discusses oilseeds and vegetable oil scenario in India; seed chain, current status of quality seed and strategies for seed production & development to enhance oilseeds output through bridging the vast untapped potential of the available technologies to reduce heavy dependence on oil imports. Of the nine annual oilseeds, groundnut, soybean, rapeseed-mustard and sesame during the last seven years (2012-13 to 2018-19) contributed 89.2-94.4% to acreage and 90.4%-95.0% to production of oilseeds. The area, production and yield of oilseeds attained an overall increase of 131.1%, 510.9% and 164.2%, respectively, from 1950-51 to 2018-19. Of the several programmes initiated to harness the vast exploitable yield reservoir of oilseeds, National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology launched during XII plan and Mega seed project during 2005-06, had great impact on enhanced availability of quality seed of newly released varieties and thus production of oilseeds. Considering annual growth of demand for edible oil, population growth and the per capita consumption of about 102.3 m t of oilseeds would be required by 2030. To meet this formidable challenge, the assets such as vibrant crop specific improvement programmes, 187 newly released high yielding varieties, improved crop management technologies, robust and effective seed chain and climate favouring seed production of diverse oilseeds are available in the country.

Elevated blood pressure remains the single biggest risk factor contributing to the global burden of disease and mortality. May Measurement Month is an annual global screening campaign aiming to improve awareness of blood pressure at the individual and population level. Adults ({greater than or equal to}18 years) recruited through opportunistic sampling were screened at sites in 92 countries during May 2019. Ideally three blood pressure readings were measured for each participant, and data on lifestyle factors and co-morbidities were collected. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP {greater than or equal to} 140 mmHg, and/or a diastolic BP {greater than or equal to} 90 mmHg (mean of the second and third readings) or taking antihypertensive medication. When necessary, multiple imputation was used to estimate participants' mean blood pressure. Mixed-effects models were used to evaluate associations between blood pressure and participant characteristics. Of 1,508,130 screenees 482,273 (32.0%) had never had a blood pressure measurement before and 513,337 (34.0%) had hypertension, of whom 58.7% were aware and 54.7% were on antihypertensive medication. Since independence, India achieved a distinction from ship-to-mouth status to self dependent, food surplus and net exporter of food grains in 69 years and recorded an all time high (285.2 million tonnes) production during 2018-19 from meagre 50.8 mt during 1950-51. In spite of spectacular success in food production over the years, it is a great challenge to sustain high production as well as enhance it further to meet the future requirement, as the population continues to grow steadily with an annual growth rate of 1.10% and expected to be 1.42 billion and 1.48 billion by 2025 and 2030, respectively, from 1.32 billion during 2017; coupled with enhanced consumption of food grains due to rising income, necessitating an increase of 4.5% and 15.7% by 2020 and 2030, respectively, over the present food production. It is a great challenge in view of climate change, diminishing and degrading land and water resources, increasing biotic and abiotic stresses and loss of bio-diversity. The present paper discusses the trend of production and productivity of food crops from 1950-51 to 2018-19; assess the contribution of seed to food production, seed chain, quality seed production and scope of quality seed for enhancing farmers’ income and future strategies for seed research, production and development to sustain food production. Requisite assets such as a strong crop specific cultivar development programmes, 850 high yielding food crop varieties comprising 657 of cereals and 193 of pulses released during the last six years, robust and vibrant seed systems, quality regulatory mechanism, globally competitive seed sector and the largest arable land with 46 soil types across 15 agro-climatic zones favouring seed production of diverse crops are available for sustaining high food production and meet the future demand for seed and food. Ensuring availability of quality seed in adequate quantity though imperative, yet, itself is not enough to trigger the production if it is not coupled with achieving sufficient varietal diversity in seed chain preferably phasing out gradually the old and obsolete varieties and inducting recently developed high yielding and disease resistant varieties. The overall progress and outcome are largely dependent on Government policies and support, which require consistent and adequate financial resources for sustaining a vibrant seed production, farm power machinery, processing units, storage, seed testing, delivery systems and trained human resources besides remunerative prices to the farmers.

Early-life microbiome perturbations have been suggested to have important effects on host development, physiology, and behaviour, which can persist throughout life. We hypothesise that early feeding (access to a pre-weaning fibrous diet) can affect gut microbiome colonisation and development in neonatal piglets. In this longitudinal study, a customised fibrous diet was provided to early-fed piglets (EF; 6 litters) starting two days after birth until weaning (28 days of age) in addition to mother’s milk, whereas control piglets (CON; 4 litters) suckled sow’s milk only. Rectal swabs were collected at multiple timepoints until six weeks of age (i.e., 2 weeks post-weaning) to investigate intestinal microbiota composition development over time using 16S rRNA gene profiling (n = 10 piglets per treatment). We observed a dynamic intestinal microbiota colonisation pattern during the pre-weaning period in both treatment groups, which rapidly stabilised within 2 weeks post-weaning. The microbial (alpha) diversity increased with age and seemed to reach a plateau in the early post-weaning time-point (day+5). The homogenous post-weaning microbiota was represented by microbial groups including Prevotella, Roseburia, Faecalibacterium, Ruminococcus, Megasphaera, Catenibacterium and Subdoligranulum. Remarkably, early feeding of neonatal piglets resulted in accelerated maturation of the intestinal microbiota at pre-weaning time-points, characterised by increased rate of microbial diversity and expanded colonisation of typical post-weaning associated microbial groups (mentioned above) at pre-weaning stages. The acceleration in EF piglets was illustrated by the simultaneous emergence of typical post-weaning-associated microbial groups and a more rapid decline of typical early-life/pre-weaning microbial genera. In addition, the individual eating behaviour scores of the piglets quantitatively correlated with the accelerated change of their microbiome. Overall, these findings show the importance of early-life nutritional strategies to influence the gut microbiota maturation in piglets.

SummaryDiverse risk factors intercede the outcomes of COVID-19. We conducted this retrospective cohort study to identify the risk factors associated with morbidity and mortality outcomes with a cohort of 1016 COVID-19 patients diagnosed in May 2020. Data were collected by telephone-interview and reviewing records using a questionnaire and checklist. Morbidity (64.4% Vs. 6.0%) and mortality (2.3% Vs. 2.5%) outcomes varied between the 14th and 28th day. Morbidity risk factors included chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (RR=1.19, RR=2.68) both on the 14th and 18th day while elderly (AOR=2.56) and smokeless tobacco (SLT) (AOR=2.17) on the 28th day. Mortality risk factors included elderly (AOR=10.14), COPD (RR=5.93), and SLT (AOR=2.25) on the 14th day, and elderly (AOR=24.37) and COPD (RR=2.72) on the 28th day. The morbidity risk was higher with chronic kidney disease (CKD) (RR=3.33) and chronic liver disease (CLD) (RR=3.99) on the 28th day. The mortality risk was higher with coronary heart disease (RR=4.54) and CLD (RR=9.66) on the 14th while with diabetes mellitus (RR=3.08, RR=2.08), hypertension (RR=3.14, RR=2.30), CKD (RR=8.97, RR=2.71), and malignant diseases (RR=10.29) on both 14th and 28th day. We must espouse program interventions considering the morbidity and mortality risk factors to condense the aggressive outcomes of COVID-19.

The structure of the mixed crystal [K1−x (NH4) x ]3H(SO4)2 as obtained from single-crystal neutron diffraction is compared with the previously reported room-temperature neutron structure of crystalline K3H(SO4)2. The two structures are very similar, as indicated by the high value of their isostructurality index (94.8%). It was found that the replacement of even a small amount (3%) of K+ with NH4 + has a significant influence on the short strong hydrogen bond connecting the two SO4 2− ions. Earlier optical measurements had revealed that the kinetics of the superionic transition in the solid solution [K1−x (NH4) x ]3H(SO4)2 are much faster than in K3H(SO4)2; this reported difference in the kinetics of the superionic phase transition in this class of crystal is explained on the basis of the difference in strength of the hydrogen-bond interactions in the two structures.

Creep feed provision may ease weaning, hence we determined the impact of providing fibrous creep feed before weaning and adding this feed to the post-weaning diet on piglet behavior and performance. Pre-weaning, litters with on average 12 piglets were given creep feed (CF, n = 12 litters) or not (NF, n = 10 litters). Post-weaning, piglets (n = 8 pens with 4 piglets/treatment) were given a weaner diet (CON) or weaner diet supplemented with creep feed (CS). Behaviors were scored in the home pen at d11, 16, 22 and 27 after birth and at wk 1 and 2 post-weaning. Feed intake, growth and fecal consistency were measured up to d14 post-weaning. A blood sample was taken at d2, 15 and 29 after birth and d2, 5 and 14 post-weaning. CF-piglets consumed on average 397 ± 71 g creep feed before weaning. CF-piglets grew faster in the last week before weaning than NF-piglets (249 ± 7 vs. 236 ± 11 g/d, F(1, 18) = 5.81, P = 0.03). However, CF- and NF-piglets did not differ in weaning weight, within-litter coefficient of variation in weaning weight, behaviors in the farrowing and weaner pen, and haptoglobin concentrations. Creep feed supplementation enhanced feed exploration at wk 2 post-weaning (0.29 ± 0.08 vs. 0.11 ± 0.03%, F(1, 27) = 5.27, P = 0.03), but did not affect other post-weaning behaviors. Pre-weaning creep feed provision and post-weaning creep feed supplementation did not affect overall feed intake, growth, feed efficiency and fecal consistency for the first 14 days post-weaning, neither body weight at d14 post-weaning. Nevertheless, CF-piglets had a lower within-pen coefficient of variation in body weight at d14 post-weaning than NF-piglets (13.6 ± 1.9 vs. 15.1 ± 1.5%, F(1, 26) = 6.89, P = 0.01). In conclusion, pre-weaning creep feed provision and post-weaning creep feed supplementation had no clear effects on piglet behavior and performance.
