Multiple reviews have examined the impact of nutritional interventions in patients with burn injuries; however, discrepancies among results cast doubt about their validity. We implemented this review to assess the impact of various nutritional interventions in adult patients with burn injuries. We conducted a thorough search of PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases until 1 August 2024, to identify relevant meta-analyses of intervention trials, examining the impact of nutritional interventions on burn patients. We adopted the random-effect models to determine the pooled effect sizes while employing the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) to examine evidence certainty. Thirty-three original intervention trials from eleven meta-analyses were entered in our review. Early enteral nutrition could substantially reduce overall mortality (relative risk (RR): 0·36, 95 % CI: 0·19, 0·68, GRADE = moderate certainty), hospital stay (mean difference (MD): −15·3, 95 % CI: −20·4, −10·2, GRADE = moderate certainty) and sepsis risk (RR: 0·23, 95 % CI: 0·11, 0·45, GRADE = moderate certainty). Glutamine showed a notable decrease in the length of hospital stay (MD: −6·23, 95 % CI: −9·53, −2·94, GRADE = low certainty). However, other nutritional interventions, including combined immunonutrition, branched-chain amino acids, fish oil, ornithine α -ketoglutarate and trace elements, did not significantly affect the assessed clinical outcomes. Early enteral nutrition might impose a beneficial effect on mortality, hospital stay length and incidence of sepsis with moderate evidence. Lower length of hospital stay was also seen in burn patients supplemented with glutamine, although the evidence was weak. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the impact of VLCKD on cardiovascular risk factors in patients with T2DM. Methods: Until March 2024, extensive searches were conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and other relevant databases. The purpose was to identify clinical trials examining the impact of VLCKD on glycemic control, lipid profile, and blood pressure. The GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) method was used to assess the evidence's degree of certainty. Results: Our initial search found a total of 2568 records and finally 29 trials were included in final analysis. Our results showed that adherence from VLCKD led to significant reduction in fasting blood sugar (WMD= -11.68 mg/dl; 95% CI: -18.79, -4.56; P = 0.001), HbA1c (WMD= -0.29; 95% CI: -0.44, -0.14; P < 0.001), HOMA-IR(WMD= -0.71; 95% CI: -1.14, -0.29; P = 0.001), insulin (WMD= -1.45; 95% CI: -2.54, -0.36; P = 0.009), triglyceride (WMD= -17.95; 95% CI: -26.82, -9.07; P < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (WMD= -2.85, 95% CI: -4.99, -0.71; P = 0.009) and diastolic blood pressure (WMD= -1.40; 95% CI: -2.66, -0.13; P = 0.03). We also found a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level after adherence from VLCKD diet (WMD = 3.93, 95% CI: 2.03, 5.84; P = 0.000). We couldn't find any significant differences between groups in term of LDL and total cholesterol levels. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation with ground flaxseed (GF) on the concentrations of adiponectin, resistin, and visfatin in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases affecting people of all ages. Adipokines secreted from adipose tissue have been shown to play an essential role in the pathogenesis of UC. Methods: This trial is an open-labeled randomized controlled trial conducted on 70 patients with UC. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: flaxseed and control. The patients in the intervention received 30 g/day flaxseed powder for 12 weeks. Patients' anthropometric, nutritional, and biochemical factors were evaluated at the beginning and end of the intervention period. Results: Totally, 64 patients (36 men and 28 women) with a mean age of 31.12±9.67 were included in the final analysis. There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding baseline weight and height (P>0.05). After the 12-week intervention, flaxseed supplementation led to a significant reduction in the resistin (-4.85±1.89 vs. -1.10±2.25, P<0.001) and visfatin concentration (-1.33±1.14 vs. -0.53±1.63, P=0.018). Further, we found a significant increase in the adiponectin levels after the GF supplementation (3.49±1.29 vs. -0.35±0.96, P<0.001). Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ginger supplementation on inflammatory, antioxidant, and periodontal parameters in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) under non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). Material and methods: In this double-blind clinical trial study, 46 T2DM patients with CP were randomly allocated to intervention and control groups and received either 4 tablets 500 mg (2 g) ginger or placebo twice a day for 8 weeks. All patients were treated with NSPT during the intervention period. Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), hs-C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), periodontal indices including clinical attachment loss (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP), pocket depth (PD), and plaque index were evaluated in all subjects pre- and post-intervention. Results: Following 8 weeks of ginger treatment with NSPT, significant reductions were observed in the mean levels of IL-6 (p=0.001), hs-CRP (p=0.03), TNF-α (p=0.007), CAL, and PD (p<0.001) in the intervention group. The mean serum levels of SOD and GPx were significantly increased in the intervention group after the intervention (p=0.001 and 0.002, respectively). At the end of the study, the mean changes of GPx were significantly higher in the intervention group compared with the control group (p=0.04). Also, after the administration of the ginger with NSPT, significant decrease occurred in the mean change of IL-6 (p=0.009), hs-CRP (p=0.049), TNF-α (p=0.049), CAL (p=0.003), and PD (p=0.04) compared with the control group. Conclusion: It is recommended that ginger supplementation along with NSPT may be effective in the improvement of inflammation, oxidative, and periodontal status in T2DM with CP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
