The Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) feature in the two-point correlation function (TPCF) of discrete tracers such as galaxies is an accurate standard ruler. The covariance matrix of the TPCF plays an important role in determining how the precision of this ruler depends on the number density and clustering strength of the tracers, as well as the survey volume. An eigen-decomposition of this matrix provides an objective way to separate the contributions of cosmic variance from those of shot-noise to the statistical uncertainties. For the signal-to-noise levels that are expected in ongoing and next-generation surveys, the cosmic variance eigen-modes dominate. These modes are smooth functions of scale, meaning that: they are insensitive to the modest changes in binning that are allowed if one wishes to resolve the BAO feature in the TPCF; they provide a good description of the correlated residuals which result from fitting smooth functional forms to the measured TPCF; they motivate a simple but accurate approximation for the uncertainty on the Linear Point (LP) estimate of the BAO distance scale. This approximation allows one to quantify the precision of the BAO distance scale estimate without having to generate a large ensemble of mock catalogs and explains why: the uncertainty on the LP does not depend on the functional form fitted to the TPCF or the binning used; the LP is more constraining than the peak or dip scales in the TPCF; the evolved TPCF is less constraining than the initial one, so that reconstruction schemes can yield significant gains in precision., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Physical Review D

Randomized compiling (RC) is an efficient method for tailoring arbitrary Markovian errors into stochastic Pauli channels. However, the standard procedure for implementing the protocol in software comes with a large experimental overhead -- namely, it scales linearly in the number of desired randomizations, each of which must be generated and measured independently. In this work, we introduce a hardware-efficient algorithm for performing RC on a cycle-by-cycle basis on the lowest level of our FPGA-based control hardware during the execution of a circuit. Importantly, this algorithm performs a different randomization per shot with zero runtime overhead beyond measuring a circuit without RC. We implement our algorithm using the QubiC control hardware, where we demonstrate significant reduction in the overall runtime of circuits implemented with RC, as well as a significantly lower variance in measured observables.

Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs) are crucial in cosmological analysis, providing a standard ruler, as well as constraints on dark energy. In General Relativity models, the BAO Linear Point - the midpoint between the dip and the peak in the correlation function - has been shown to be rather robust to evolution and redshift space distortions. We show that this remains true even when the gravity model is not General Relativity, at least for $f(R)$ and DGP gravity models which have the same expansion history as the standard $\Lambda$CDM. As it collapses to form a halo, the shape of a protohalo patch is deformed by the initial shear field. This deformation is often modeled using the "deformation" tensor, constructed from second derivatives of the gravitational potential, whose trace gives the initial overdensity. However, especially for lower mass protohalos, this matrix is not always positive definite: one of its eigenvalues has a different sign from the others. We show that the evolution of a patch is better described by the "energy shear" tensor, which is positive definite and plays a direct role in the evolution. This paper highlights methods from geostatistics that are relevant to the interpretation, intercomparison, and synthesis of atmospheric model data, with a specific application to exoplanet atmospheric modeling. Climate models are increasingly used to study theoretical and observational properties of exoplanets, which include a hierarchy of models ranging from fast and idealized models to those that are slower but more comprehensive. Exploring large parameter spaces with computationally-expensive models can be accomplished with sparse sampling techniques, but analyzing such sparse samples can pose challenges for conventional interpolation functions. Ordinary kriging is a statistical method for describing the spatial distribution of a data set in terms of the variogram function, which can be used to interpolate sparse samples across any number of dimensions. Variograms themselves may also be useful diagnostic tools for describing the spatial distribution of model data in exoplanet atmospheric model intercomparison projects. Universal kriging is another method that can synthesize data calculated by models of different complexity, which can be used to combine sparse samples of data from slow models with larger samples of data from fast models. Ordinary and universal kriging can also provide a way to synthesize model predictions with sparse samples of exoplanet observations and may have other applications in exoplanet science., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Planetary Science Journal

Atmospheric pollutants such as CFCs and NO$_{2}$ have been proposed as potential remotely detectable atmospheric technosignature gases. Here we investigate the potential for artificial greenhouse gases including CF$_{4}$, C$_{2}$F$_{6}$, C$_{3}$F$_{8}$, SF$_{6}$, and NF$_{3}$ to generate detectable atmospheric signatures. In contrast to passive incidental byproducts of industrial processes, artificial greenhouse gases would represent an intentional effort to change the climate of a planet with long-lived, low toxicity gases and would possess low false positive potential. An extraterrestrial civilization may be motivated to undertake such an effort to arrest a predicted snowball state on their home world or to terraform an otherwise uninhabitable terrestrial planet within their system. Because artificial greenhouse gases strongly absorb in the thermal mid-infrared window of temperate atmospheres, a terraformed planet will logically possess strong absorption features from these gases at mid-IR wavelengths ($\sim$8-12 $\mu$m), possibly accompanied by diagnostic features in the near-IR. As a proof of concept, we calculate the needed observation time to detect 1 [10](100) ppm of C$_{2}$F$_{6}$/C$_{3}$F$_{8}$/SF$_{6}$ on TRAPPIST-1f with JWST MIRI/LRS and NIRSpec. We find that a combination of 1[10](100) ppm each of C$_{2}$F$_{6}$, C$_{3}$F$_{8}$, and SF$_{6}$ can be detected with an S/N $\geq$ 5 in as few as 25[10](5) transits with MIRI/LRS. We further explore mid-infrared direct-imaging scenarios with the LIFE mission concept and find these gases are more detectable than standard biosignatures at these concentrations. Patients diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer (mBC) typically undergo several radiographic assessments during their treatment. mBC often involves multiple metastatic lesions in different organs, it is imperative to accurately track and assess these lesions to gain a comprehensive understanding of the disease's response to treatment. Computerized analysis methods that rely on lesion-level tracking have often used manual matching of corresponding lesions, a time-consuming process that is prone to errors. This paper introduces an automated lesion correspondence algorithm designed to precisely track both targets' lesions and non-targets' lesions in longitudinal data. Here we demonstrate the applicability of our algorithm on the anonymized data from two Phase III trials. The dataset contains imaging data of patients for different follow-up timepoints and the radiologist annotations for the patients enrolled in the trials. Target and non-target lesions are annotated by either one or two groups of radiologists. To facilitate accurate tracking, we have developed a registration-assisted lesion correspondence algorithm. The algorithm employs a sequential two-step pipeline: (a) Firstly, an adaptive Hungarian algorithm is used to establish correspondence among lesions within a single volumetric image series which have been annotated by multiple radiologists at a specific timepoint. (b) Secondly, after establishing correspondence and assigning unique names to the lesions, three-dimensional rigid registration is applied to various image series at the same timepoint. Registration is followed by ongoing lesion correspondence based on the adaptive Hungarian algorithm and updating lesion names for accurate tracking. Validation of our automated lesion correspondence algorithm is performed through triaxial plots based on axial, sagittal, and coronal views, confirming its efficacy in matching lesions.

Quantum circuits utilizing real time feedback techniques (such as active reset and mid-circuit measurement) are a powerful tool for NISQ-era quantum computing. Such techniques are crucial for implementing error correction protocols, and can reduce the resource requirements of certain quantum algorithms. Realizing these capabilities requires flexible, low-latency classical control. We have developed a custom FPGA-based processor architecture for QubiC, an open source platform for superconducting qubit control. Our architecture is distributed in nature, and consists of a bank of lightweight cores, each configured to control a small (1-3) number of signal generator channels. Each core is capable of executing parameterized control and readout pulses, as well as performing arbitrary control flow based on mid-circuit measurement results. We have also developed a modular compiler stack and domain-specific intermediate representation for programming the processor. Our representation allows users to specify circuits using both gate and pulse-level abstractions, and includes high-level control flow constructs (e.g. if-else blocks and loops). The compiler stack is designed to integrate with quantum software tools and programming languages, such as TrueQ, pyGSTi, and OpenQASM3. A leading application of quantum computers is the efficient simulation of large unitary quantum systems. Extending this advantage to the study of open Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics (CQED) systems could enable the use of quantum computers in the exploration and design of many-body quantum optical devices. Such devices have promising applications in optical quantum communication, simulation, and computing. In this work, we present an early exploration of the potential for quantum computers to efficiently investigate open CQED physics. Our simulations make use of a recent quantum algorithm that maps the dynamics of a singly excited open Tavis-Cummings model containing $N$ atoms coupled to a lossy cavity. We report the results of executing this algorithm on two noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers, a superconducting processor and a trapped ion processor, to simulate the population dynamics of an open CQED system featuring $N = 3$ atoms. By applying technology-specific transpilation and error mitigation techniques, we minimize the impact of gate errors, noise, and decoherence in each hardware platform, obtaining results which agree closely with the exact solution of the system. These results provide confidence that future simulation algorithms, combined with emerging large-scale quantum processors, can be a powerful tool for studying cavity quantum electrodynamics., Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures

We demonstrate the effectiveness of one of the many multi-tracer analyses enabled by Optimal Transport (OT) reconstruction. Leveraging a semi-discrete OT algorithm, we determine the displacements between initial and observed positions of biased tracers and the remaining matter field. With only redshift-space distorted final positions of biased tracers and a simple premise for the remaining mass distribution as input, OT solves the displacement field. This extracted field, assuming asymptotically uniform density and a gradient flow displacement, enables reconstruction of the initial overdensity fluctuation field. We show that the divergence of the OT displacement field is a good proxy of the linear density field, even though the method never assumes the linear theory growth. Additionally, this divergence field can be combined with the reconstructed protohalos to provide a higher signal-to-noise measurement of the BAO standard ruler than was possible with either measurement individually., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has provided the first opportunity to study the atmospheres of terrestrial exoplanets and estimate their surface conditions. Earth-sized planets around Sun-like stars are currently inaccessible with JWST however, and will have to be observed using the next generation of telescopes with direct imaging capabilities. Detecting active volcanism on an Earth-like planet would be particularly valuable as it would provide insight into its interior, and provide context for the commonality of the interior states of Earth and Venus. In this work we used a climate model to simulate four exoEarths over eight years with ongoing large igneous province eruptions with outputs ranging from 1.8-60 Gt of sulfur dioxide. The atmospheric data from the simulations were used to model direct imaging observations between 0.2-2.0 $\mu$m, producing reflectance spectra for every month of each exoEarth simulation. We calculated the amount of observation time required to detect each of the major absorption features in the spectra, and identified the most prominent effects that volcanism had on the reflectance spectra. These effects include changes in the size of the O$_3$, O$_2$, and H$_2$O absorption features, and changes in the slope of the spectrum. Researchers manipulate and measure quantum processing units via the classical electronics control system. We developed an open-source FPGA-based quantum bit control system called QubiC for superconducting qubits. After a few years of qubit calibration and testing experience on QubiC 1.0, we recognized the need for mid-circuit measurements and feed-forward capabilities to implement advanced quantum algorithms effectively. Moreover, following the development of RFSoC technology, we upgraded the system to QubiC 2.0 on an Xilinx ZCU216 evaluation board and developed all these enriched features. The system uses portable FPGA gateware with a simplified processor to handle commands on-the-fly. For design simplicity and straightforward scaling, we adopted a multi-core distributed architecture, assigning one processor core per qubit. The actual pulses combine the unique pulse envelope and carrier information specified in a command. Each pulse envelope is pre-stored on FPGA's block RAMs, ensuring the speed and reusability during the whole circuit. The pulse parameters including amplitude, phase, and frequency can be updated from pulse to pulse. The software stack is developed in Python, running on both the FPGA's ARM core and host computer via XML-RPC. The quantum circuit can be described in a high-level language, which supports programming at both pulse-level and native-gate level, and includes high-level control flow constructs. The QubiC software stack compiles these quantum programs into binary commands that can be loaded into the FPGA. With Qubic 2.0, we successfully achieved multi-FPGA synchronization in bench tests and demonstrated simplified feed-forward experiments on conditional circuits. The enhanced QubiC system represents a significant step forward in quantum computing, providing researchers with powerful tools to explore and implement advanced quantum algorithms and applications.

We review the non-linear statistics of Primordial Black Holes that form from the collapse of over-densities in a radiation dominated Universe. We focus on the scenario in which large over-densities are generated by rare and Gaussian curvature perturbations during inflation. As new results, we show that the mass spectrum follows a power law determined by the critical exponent of the self-similar collapse up to a power spectrum dependent cut-off, and that the abundance related to very narrow power spectra is exponentially suppressed. Related to this, we discuss and explicitly show that the Press-Schechter approximation, as well as the statistics of mean profiles, lead to wrong conclusions for the abundance and mass spectrum. Finally, we clarify that the transfer function in the statistics of initial conditions for primordial black holes formation (the abundance) does not play a significant role., Comment: v2 typos corrected and clarifications added. Recent research has emphasized the benefits of accurately reconstructing the initial Lagrangian positions of biased tracers from their positions at a later time, to gain cosmological information. A weighted semi-discrete optimal transport algorithm can achieve the required accuracy, provided the late-time positions are known, with minimal information about the background cosmology. The algorithm's performance relies on knowing the masses of the biased tracers, and depends on how one models the distribution of the remaining mass that is not associated with these tracers. We demonstrate that simple models of the remaining mass result in accurate retrieval of the initial Lagrangian positions, which we quantify using pair statistics and the void probability function. This is true even if the input positions are affected by redshift-space distortions. The most sophisticated models assume that the masses of the tracers, and the amount and clustering of the missing mass are known; we show that the method is robust to realistic errors in the masses of the tracers and remains so as the model for the missing mass becomes increasingly crude., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures

Quantum computing with qudits is an emerging approach that exploits a larger, more-connected computational space, providing advantages for many applications, including quantum simulation and quantum error correction. Nonetheless, qudits are typically afflicted by more complex errors and suffer greater noise sensitivity which renders their scaling difficult. In this work, we introduce techniques to tailor and mitigate arbitrary Markovian noise in qudit circuits. We experimentally demonstrate these methods on a superconducting transmon qutrit processor, and benchmark their effectiveness for multipartite qutrit entanglement and random circuit sampling, obtaining up to 3x improvement in our results. To the best of our knowledge, this constitutes the first ever error mitigation experiment performed on qutrits. The manipulation of quantum states of light has resulted in significant advancements in both dark matter searches and gravitational wave detectors [1-4]. Current dark matter searches operating in the microwave frequency range use nearly quantum-limited amplifiers [3, 5, 6]. Future high frequency searches will use photon counting techniques [1] to evade the standard quantum limit. We present a signal enhancement technique that utilizes a superconducting qubit to prepare a superconducting microwave cavity in a non-classical Fock state and stimulate the emission of a photon from a dark matter wave. By initializing the cavity in an $|n=4\rangle$ Fock state, we demonstrate a quantum enhancement technique that increases the signal photon rate and hence also the dark matter scan rate each by a factor of 2.78. Using this technique, we conduct a dark photon search in a band around $\mathrm{5.965\, GHz \, (24.67\, \mu eV)}$, where the kinetic mixing angle $\epsilon \geq 4.35 \times 10^{-13}$ is excluded at the $90\%$ confidence level., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures

We develop a framework for self-consistently extracting cosmological information from the clustering of tracers in redshift space, $\textit{without}$ relying on model-dependent templates to describe the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature. Our approach uses the recently proposed Laguerre reconstruction technique for the BAO feature and its linear point $r_{\rm LP}$, and substantially extends it to simultaneously model the multipoles $\ell=0,2,4$ of the anisotropic galaxy 2-point correlation function (2pcf). The approach is `model-agnostic': it assumes that the non-linear growth of structure smears the BAO feature by an approximately Gaussian kernel with a smearing scale $\sigma_{\rm v}$, but does not assume any fiducial cosmology for describing the shape of the feature itself. Using mock observations for two realistic survey configurations assuming $\Lambda$ cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM), combined with Bayesian parameter inference, we show that the linear point $r_{\rm LP}$ and smearing scale $\sigma_{\rm v}$ can be accurately recovered by our method in both existing and upcoming surveys. The precision of the recovery of $r_{\rm LP}$ is always better than $1\%$, while $\sigma_{\rm v}$ can be recovered with $\lesssim10\%$ uncertainty provided the linear galaxy bias $b$ is separately constrained, e.g., using weak lensing observations. Our method is also sensitive to the linear growth rate $f$, albeit with larger uncertainties and systematic errors, especially for upcoming surveys such as DESI. We discuss how our model can be modified to improve the recovery of $f$, such that the resulting constraints on $\{f,\sigma_{\rm v},r_{\rm LP}\}$ can potentially be used as a test of cosmological models including and beyond $\Lambda$CDM., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures; v2: minor changes, accepted in MNRAS

In analytical models of structure formation, protohalos are routinely assumed to be peaks of the smoothed initial density field, with the smoothing filter being spherically symmetric. This works reasonably well for identifying a protohalo's center of mass, but not its shape. To provide a more realistic description of protohalo boundaries, one must go beyond the spherical picture. We suggest that this can be done by looking for regions of fixed volume, but arbitrary shape, that minimize the enclosed energy. Such regions are surrounded by surfaces over which (a slightly modified version of) the gravitational potential is constant. We show that these equipotential surfaces provide an excellent description of protohalo shapes, orientations and associated torques., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

We present observations of the 1.35+/-0.07 Earth-radius planet L 98-59 c using Wide Field Camera~3 on the Hubble Space Telescope. L 98-59 is a nearby (10.6 pc), bright (H=7.4 mag), M3V star that harbors three small, transiting planets. As one of the closest known transiting multi-planet systems, L 98-59 offers one of the best opportunities to probe and compare the atmospheres of rocky planets that formed in the same stellar environment. We measured the transmission spectrum of L 98-59 c during a single transit, with the extracted spectrum showing marginal evidence for wavelength-dependent transit depth variations which would indicate the presence of an atmosphere. Forward modeling was used to constrain possible atmospheric compositions of the planet based on the shape of the transmission spectrum. Although L 98-59 is a fairly quiet star, we have seen evidence for stellar activity, and therefore we cannot rule out a scenario where the source of the signal originates with inhomogeneities on the host-star surface. While intriguing, our results are inconclusive and additional data is needed to verify any atmospheric signal. Fortunately, additional data will soon be collected from both HST and JWST. Should this result be confirmed with additional data, L 98-59 c would be the first planet smaller than 2 Earth-radii with a detected atmosphere, and among the first small planets with a known atmosphere to be studied in detail by the JWST., Comment: Submitted to AAS Journals

Machine learning-based segmentation in medical imaging is widely used in clinical applications from diagnostics to radiotherapy treatment planning. Segmented medical images with ground truth are useful for investigating the properties of different segmentation performance metrics to inform metric selection. Regular geometrical shapes are often used to synthesize segmentation errors and illustrate properties of performance metrics, but they lack the complexity of anatomical variations in real images. In this study, we present a tool to emulate segmentations by adjusting the reference (truth) masks of anatomical objects extracted from real medical images. Our tool is designed to modify the defined truth contours and emulate different types of segmentation errors with a set of user-configurable parameters. We defined the ground truth objects from 230 patient images in the Glioma Image Segmentation for Radiotherapy (GLIS-RT) database. For each object, we used our segmentation synthesis tool to synthesize 10 versions of segmentation (i.e., 10 simulated segmentors or algorithms), where each version has a pre-defined combination of segmentation errors. We then applied 20 performance metrics to evaluate all synthetic segmentations. We demonstrated the properties of these metrics, including their ability to capture specific types of segmentation errors. By analyzing the intrinsic properties of these metrics and categorizing the segmentation errors, we are working toward the goal of developing a decision-tree tool for assisting in the selection of segmentation performance metrics., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures. The fundamental trade-off between robustness and tunability is a central challenge in the pursuit of quantum simulation and fault-tolerant quantum computation. In particular, many emerging quantum architectures are designed to achieve high coherence at the expense of having fixed spectra and consequently limited types of controllable interactions. Here, by adiabatically transforming fixed-frequency superconducting circuits into modifiable Floquet qubits, we demonstrate an XXZ Heisenberg interaction with fully adjustable anisotropy. This interaction model is on one hand the basis for many-body quantum simulation of spin systems, and on the other hand the primitive for an expressive quantum gate set. To illustrate the robustness and versatility of our Floquet protocol, we tailor the Heisenberg Hamiltonian and implement two-qubit iSWAP, CZ, and SWAP gates with estimated fidelities of 99.32(3)%, 99.72(2)%, and 98.93(5)%, respectively. In addition, we implement a Heisenberg interaction between higher energy levels and employ it to construct a three-qubit CCZ gate with a fidelity of 96.18(5)%. Importantly, the protocol is applicable to various fixed-frequency high-coherence platforms, thereby unlocking a suite of essential interactions for high-performance quantum information processing. From a broader perspective, our work provides compelling avenues for future exploration of quantum electrodynamics and optimal control using the Floquet framework.

With the increasing number of planets discovered by TESS, the atmospheric characterization of small exoplanets is accelerating. L98-59 is a M-dwarf hosting a multi-planet system, and so far, four small planets have been confirmed. The innermost planet b is $\sim15\%$ smaller and $\sim60\%$ lighter than Earth, and should thus have a predominantly rocky composition. The Hubble Space Telescope observed five primary transits of L98-59b in $1.1-1.7\ \mu$m, and here we report the data analysis and the resulting transmission spectrum of the planet. We measure the transit depths for each of the five transits and, by combination, we obtain a transmission spectrum with an overall precision of $\sim20$ ppm in for each of the 18 spectrophotometric channels. With this level of precision, the transmission spectrum does not show significant modulation, and is thus consistent with a planet without any atmosphere or a planet having an atmosphere and high-altitude clouds or haze. The scenarios involving an aerosol-free, H$_2$-dominated atmosphere with H$_2$O or CH$_4$ are inconsistent with the data. The transmission spectrum also disfavors, but does not rules out, an H$_2$O-dominated atmosphere without clouds. A spectral retrieval process suggests that an H$_2$-dominated atmosphere with HCN and clouds or haze may be the preferred solution, but this indication is non-conclusive. A foundational set of findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) principles were proposed in 2016 as prerequisites for proper data management and stewardship, with the goal of enabling the reusability of scholarly data. The principles were also meant to apply to other digital assets, at a high level, and over time, the FAIR guiding principles have been re-interpreted or extended to include the software, tools, algorithms, and workflows that produce data. FAIR principles are now being adapted in the context of AI models and datasets. Here, we present the perspectives, vision, and experiences of researchers from different countries, disciplines, and backgrounds who are leading the definition and adoption of FAIR principles in their communities of practice, and discuss outcomes that may result from pursuing and incentivizing FAIR AI research. Planets in synchronous rotation around low-mass stars are the most salient targets for current ground- and space-based missions to observe and characterize. Such model calculations can help to prioritize targets for observation with current and future missions; however, intrinsic differences in the complexity and physical parameterizations of various models can lead to different predictions of a planet's climate state. Understanding such model differences is necessary if such models are to guide target selection and aid in the analysis of observations. This paper presents a protocol to intercompare models of a hypothetical planet with a 15 day synchronous rotation period around a 3000 K blackbody star across a parameter space of surface pressure and incident instellation. We conduct a sparse sample of 16 cases from a previously published exploration of this parameter space with the ExoPlaSim model. By selecting particular cases across this broad parameter space, the SAMOSA intercomparison will identify areas where simpler models are sufficient as well as areas where more complex GCMs are required. Our preliminary comparison using ExoCAM shows general consistency between the climate state predicted by ExoCAM and ExoPlaSim except in regions of the parameter space most likely to be in a steam atmosphere or incipient runaway greenhouse state. We use this preliminary analysis to define several options for participation in the intercomparison by models of all levels of complexity. Solar system exploration provides numerous possibilities for advancing technosignature science. The search for life in the solar system includes missions designed to search for evidence of biosignatures on other planetary bodies, but many missions could also attempt to search for and constrain the presence of technology within the solar system. Technosignatures and biosignatures represent complementary approaches toward searching for evidence of life in our solar neighborhood, and beyond. This report summarizes the potential technosignature opportunities within ongoing solar system exploration and the recommendations of the "Origins, Worlds, and Life" Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey. We discuss opportunities for constraining the prevalence of technosignatures within the solar system using current or future missions at negligible additional cost, and we present a preliminary assessment of gaps that may exist in the search for technosignatures within the solar system., Comment: A report from the First Penn State SETI Symposium

Constraints on cosmological parameters are often distilled from sky surveys by fitting templates to summary statistics of the data that are motivated by a fiducial cosmological model. However, recent work has shown how to estimate the distance scale using templates that are more generic: the basis functions used are not explicitly tied to any one cosmological model. We describe a Bayesian framework for (i) determining how many basis functions to use and (ii) comparing one basis set with another. Our formulation provides intuition into how (a) one's degree of belief in different basis sets, (b) the fact that the choice of priors depends on basis set, and (c) the data set itself, together determine the derived constraints. Free-space optical (FSO) communication can be subject to various types of distortion and loss as the signal propagates through non-uniform media. In experiment and simulation, we demonstrate that the state of polarization and degree of polarization of light passed though underwater bubbles, causing turbulence, is preserved. Our experimental setup serves as an efficient, low cost alternative approach to long distance atmospheric or underwater testing. We compare our experimental results with those of simulations, in which we model underwater bubbles, and separately, atmospheric turbulence. A class of discrete Bidding Combinatorial Games that generalize alternating normal play was introduced by Kant, Larsson, Rai, and Upasany (2022). The major questions concerning optimal outcomes were resolved. By generalizing standard game comparison techniques from alternating normal play, we propose an algorithmic play-solution to the problem of game comparison for bidding games. We demonstrate some consequences of this result that generalize classical results in alternating play (from Winning Ways 1982 and On Numbers and Games 1976). In particular, integers, dyadics and numbers have many nice properties, such as group structures, but on the other hand the game * is non-invertible. We state a couple of thrilling conjectures and open problems for readers to dive into this promising path of bidding combinatorial games., Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure

Contemporary methods for benchmarking noisy quantum processors typically measure average error rates or process infidelities. However, thresholds for fault-tolerant quantum error correction are given in terms of worst-case error rates -- defined via the diamond norm -- which can differ from average error rates by orders of magnitude. One method for resolving this discrepancy is to randomize the physical implementation of quantum gates, using techniques like randomized compiling (RC). In this work, we use gate set tomography to perform precision characterization of a set of two-qubit logic gates to study RC on a superconducting quantum processor. We find that, under RC, gate errors are accurately described by a stochastic Pauli noise model without coherent errors, and that spatially-correlated coherent errors and non-Markovian errors are strongly suppressed. We further show that the average and worst-case error rates are equal for randomly compiled gates, and measure a maximum worst-case error of 0.0197(3) for our gate set. Our results show that randomized benchmarks are a viable route to both verifying that a quantum processor's error rates are below a fault-tolerance threshold, and to bounding the failure rates of near-term algorithms, if -- and only if -- gates are implemented via randomization methods which tailor noise.

Combinatorial Game Theory is a branch of mathematics and theoretical computer science that studies sequential 2-player games with perfect information. Normal play is the convention where a player who cannot move loses. Here, we generalize the classical alternating normal play to infinitely many game families, by means of discrete Richman auctions (Develin et al. 2010, Larsson et al. 2021, Lazarus et al. 1996). We generalize the notion of a perfect play outcome, and find an exact characterization of outcome feasibility. As a main result, we prove existence of a game form for each such outcome class; then we describe their lattice structures. By imposing restrictions to the general families, such as impartial and {\em symmetric termination}, we find surprising analogies with alternating play., Comment: 5 figures

Randomized benchmarking (RB) protocols are the most widely used methods for assessing the performance of quantum gates. However, the existing RB methods either do not scale to many qubits or cannot benchmark a universal gate set. Here, we introduce and demonstrate a technique for scalable RB of many universal and continuously parameterized gate sets, using a class of circuits called randomized mirror circuits. Our technique can be applied to a gate set containing an entangling Clifford gate and the set of arbitrary single-qubit gates, as well as gate sets containing controlled rotations about the Pauli axes. We use our technique to benchmark universal gate sets on four qubits of the Advanced Quantum Testbed, including a gate set containing a controlled-S gate and its inverse, and we investigate how the observed error rate is impacted by the inclusion of non-Clifford gates. Finally, we demonstrate that our technique scales to many qubits with experiments on a 27-qubit IBM Q processor. We use our technique to quantify the impact of crosstalk on this 27-qubit device, and we find that it contributes approximately 2/3 of the total error per gate in random many-qubit circuit layers., Comment: 15 pages + appendices. v2: Corrected error in Section IIIA step 3 + minor edits. v3: Added new theory results

Ternary quantum information processing in superconducting devices poses a promising alternative to its more popular binary counterpart through larger, more connected computational spaces and proposed advantages in quantum simulation and error correction. Although generally operated as qubits, transmons have readily addressable higher levels, making them natural candidates for operation as quantum three-level systems (qutrits). Recent works in transmon devices have realized high fidelity single qutrit operation. Nonetheless, effectively engineering a high-fidelity two-qutrit entanglement remains a central challenge for realizing qutrit processing in a transmon device. In this work, we apply the differential AC Stark shift to implement a flexible, microwave-activated, and dynamic cross-Kerr entanglement between two fixed-frequency transmon qutrits, expanding on work performed for the $ZZ$ interaction with transmon qubits. We then use this interaction to engineer efficient, high-fidelity qutrit CZ$^\dag$ and CZ gates, with estimated process fidelities of 97.3(1)% and 95.2(3)% respectively, a significant step forward for operating qutrits on a multi-transmon device., Comment: 8 pages (+19 pages in supplement) 5 Figures (+7 in supplement)
