We present a novel technique called "photometric IGM tomography" to map the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $z\simeq4.9$ in the COSMOS field. It utilizes deep narrow-band (NB) imaging to photometrically detect faint Ly$\alpha$ forest transmission in background galaxies across the Subaru/Hyper-Suprime Cam (HSC)'s $1.8\rm\,sq.\,deg$ field of view and locate Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) in the same cosmic volume. Using ultra-deep HSC images and Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting, we measure the Ly$\alpha$ forest transmission at $z\simeq4.9$ along a large number ($140$) of background galaxies selected from the DEIMOS10k spectroscopic catalogue at $4.98, Comment: 27 pages, 21 figures, accepted by MNRAS, full tables available as online supplementary material

We present new observations of sixteen bright ($r=19-21$) gravitationally lensed galaxies at $z\simeq 1-3$ selected from the CASSOWARY survey. Included in our sample is the $z=1.42$ galaxy CSWA-141, one of the brightest known reionization-era analogs at high redshift (g=20.5), with a large sSFR (31.2 Gyr$^{-1}$) and an [OIII]+H$\beta$ equivalent width (EW$_{\rm{[OIII]+H\beta}}$=730~\r{A}) that is nearly identical to the average value expected at $z\simeq 7-8$. In this paper, we investigate the rest-frame UV nebular line emission in our sample with the goal of understanding the factors that regulate strong CIII] emission. Whereas most of the sources in our sample show weak UV line emission, we find elevated CIII] in the spectrum of CSWA-141 (EW$_{\rm{CIII]}}$=4.6$\pm1.9$~\r{A}) together with detections of other prominent emission lines (OIII], Si III], Fe II$^\star$, Mg II). We compare the rest-optical line properties of high redshift galaxies with strong and weak CIII] emission, and find that systems with the strongest UV line emission tend to have young stellar populations and nebular gas that is moderately metal-poor and highly ionized, consistent with trends seen at low and high redshift. The brightness of CSWA-141 enables detailed investigation of the extreme emission line galaxies which become common at $z>6$. We find that gas traced by the CIII] doublet likely probes higher densities than that traced by [OII] and [SII]. Characterisation of the spectrally resolved Mg II emission line and several low ionization absorption lines suggests neutral gas around the young stars is likely optically thin, potentially facilitating the escape of ionizing radiation., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

For over 50 years Arnold Wolfendale was an international leader in the fields of cosmic ray and gamma ray astronomy, making many seminal contributions. His extensive studies of the muon particle culminated in 1965 when, using an installation in the Kolar Gold Mine in India, he played a major role in the first detection of the neutrinos associated with muons produced in the atmosphere. His interests in the origin of high-energy cosmic rays were extensive and required the development of a better understanding of particle physics at energies beyond those accessible at accelerators. Recognizing that high-energy gamma rays can arise from cosmic ray interactions with the interstellar gas, he used early satellite data to argue for the galactic origin of intermediate-energy cosmic rays and for studies of the distribution of molecular hydrogen. His interests in astronomy, which he firmly held to be a branch of physics, drove him to develop a world-class activity in this area at Durham University. This achievement, in part, led to him being appointed Astronomer Royal in 1991. He used this position, and his roles as president of the Royal Astronomical Society, the Institute of Physics and the European Physical Society, to lobby tirelessly for more governmental support for science. He was an early advocate for improvements in the public understanding of science, leading by example. In his later years Arnold's interests extended to cosmology and horology, and he argued against a possible connection between cosmic rays and global warming. A brilliant communicator, Arnold gave a huge number of lectures each year to general audiences, almost to the end of his life.

Reionisation-era galaxies often display intense nebular emission lines, both in rest-frame optical ([OIII]+H$\beta$) and ultraviolet (UV; CIII], CIV). How such strong nebular emission is powered remains unclear, with both active galactic nuclei (AGN) and hot stars considered equally viable. The UV continuum slopes of these early systems tend to be very blue ($\beta-1$) than typical star-forming systems in the reionisation era. To investigate the properties of AGN in the reionisation era, we have conducted a search for potential examples of rare analogues with blue continua at intermediate redshift ($z\sim2-3$). Our goals are to determine whether AGN with intense line emission and blue continua exist and thereby to establish the range of rest-frame UV and optical line ratios in this population. In this paper we report the detection of a X-ray luminous AGN at $z=3.21$ (UDS-24561) with extreme [OIII]+H$\beta$ line emission (EW $=1300$ \r{A}) and a blue UV continuum slope ($\beta=-2.34$). MMT/Binospec and Keck/MOSFIRE spectra indicate rest-frame UV line ratios consistent with AGN photoionisation models and rest-frame optical lines with both a narrow component (FWHM $=154$ km$/$s) and extended broad wings (FWHM $=977$ km$/$s), consistent with outflowing gas. We describe how such objects can be identified in future JWST emission line surveys in the reionisation era, thereby providing a valuable census of AGN activity at $z>6$ and understanding their contribution to cosmic reionisation., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We use the SPHINX$^{20}$ cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulation to study how Lyman Continuum (LyC) photons escape from galaxies and the observational signatures of this escape. We define two classes of LyC leaker: Bursty Leakers and Remnant Leakers, based on their star formation rates (SFRs) that are averaged over 10 Myr (SFR$_{10}$) or 100 Myr (SFR$_{100}$). Both have $f_{\rm esc}>20\%$ and experienced an extreme burst of star formation, but Bursty Leakers have ${\rm SFR_{10}>SFR_{100}}$, while Remnant Leakers have ${\rm SFR_{10}20\%$ dominate the ionizing photon budget at $z\gtrsim7.5$ but the contribution from galaxies with $f_{\rm esc}, Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We report the discovery of an intrinsically faint, quintuply-imaged, dusty galaxy MACS0600-z6 at a redshift $z=$6.07 viewed through the cluster MACSJ0600.1-2008 ($z$=0.46). A $\simeq4\sigma$ dust detection is seen at 1.2mm as part of the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS), an on-going ALMA Large program, and the redshift is secured via [C II] 158 $\mu$m emission described in a companion paper. In addition, spectroscopic follow-up with GMOS/Gemini-North shows a break in the galaxy's spectrum, consistent with the Lyman break at that redshift. We use a detailed mass model of the cluster and infer a magnification $\mu\gtrsim$30 for the most magnified image of this galaxy, which provides an unprecedented opportunity to probe the physical properties of a sub-luminous galaxy at the end of cosmic reionisation. Based on the spectral energy distribution, we infer lensing-corrected stellar and dust masses of $\rm{2.9^{+11.5}_{-2.3}\times10^9}$ and $\rm{4.8^{+4.5}_{-3.4}\times10^6}$ $\rm{M_{\odot}}$ respectively, a star formation rate of $\rm{9.7^{+22.0}_{-6.6} M_{\odot} yr^{-1}}$, an intrinsic size of $\rm{0.54^{+0.26}_{-0.14}}$ kpc, and a luminosity-weighted age of 200$\pm$100 Myr. Strikingly, the dust production rate in this relatively young galaxy appears to be larger than that observed for equivalent, lower redshift sources. We present new observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array for a gravitationally-lensed galaxy at $z=9.1$, MACS1149-JD1. [O III] 88-$\mu$m emission is detected at 10$\sigma$ with a spatial resolution of $\sim0.3$ kpc in the source plane, enabling the most distant morpho-kinematic study of a galaxy. The [O III] emission is distributed smoothly without any resolved clumps and shows a clear velocity gradient with $\Delta V_{\rm obs}/2\sigma_{\rm tot}=0.84\pm0.23$, where $\Delta V_{\rm obs}$ is the observed maximum velocity difference and $\sigma_{\rm tot}$ is the velocity dispersion measured in the spatially-integrated line profile, suggesting a rotating system. Assuming a geometrically thin self-gravitating rotation disk model, we obtain $V_{\rm rot}/\sigma_V=0.67_{-0.26}^{+0.73}$, where $V_{\rm rot}$ and $\sigma_V$ are the rotation velocity and velocity dispersion, respectively, still consistent with rotation. The resulting disk mass of $0.65_{-0.40}^{+1.37}\times10^{9}$ M$_\odot$ is consistent with being associated with the stellar mass identified with a 300 Myr-old stellar population independently indicated by a Balmer break in the spectral energy distribution. We present improved results of the measurement of the correlation between galaxies and the intergalactic medium transmission at the end of reionization. We have gathered a sample of 13 spectroscopically confirmed Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) and 21 Lyman-α emitters (LAEs) at angular separations 20 arcsec ≲ θ ≲ 10 arcmin (∼0.1–4 pMpc at z ∼ 6) from the sightlines to eight background z ≳ 6 quasars. We report for the first time the detection of an excess of Lyman-α transmission spikes at ∼10–60 cMpc from LAEs (3.2σ) and LBGs (1.9σ). We interpret the data with an improved model of the galaxy–Lyman-α transmission and two-point cross-correlations, which includes the enhanced photoionization due to clustered faint sources, enhanced gas densities around the central bright objects and spatial variations of the mean free path. The observed LAE(LBG)–Lyman-α transmission spike two-point cross-correlation function (2PCCF) constrains the luminosity-averaged escape fraction of all galaxies contributing to reionization to $\langle f_{\rm esc} \rangle _{M_{\rm UV}\lt -12} = 0.14_{-0.05}^{+0.28}\, (0.23_{-0.12}^{+0.46})$. We investigate if the 2PCCF measurement can determine whether bright or faint galaxies are the dominant contributors to reionization. Our results show that a contribution from faint galaxies ($M_{\rm UV} \gt -20 \, (2\sigma)$) is necessary to reproduce the observed 2PCCF and that reionization might be driven by different sub-populations around LBGs and LAEs at z ∼ 6.

As the James Webb Space Telescope approaches scientific operation, there is much interest in exploring the redshift range beyond that accessible with Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Currently, the only means to gauge the presence of such early galaxies is to age-date the stellar population of systems in the reionisation era. As a significant fraction of $z\simeq7-8$ galaxies are inferred from Spitzer photometry to have extremely intense [OIII] emission lines, it is commonly believed these are genuinely young systems that formed at redshifts $z100$ Myr) population whose stellar mass is $\simeq40$ times that associated with the starburst responsible for the extreme line emission. Without adequate rest-frame near-infrared photometry we argue it may be premature to conclude that extreme line emitters in the reionisation era are low mass systems that formed at redshifts below $z\simeq10$., 14 pages, 7 figure, accepted by MNRAS

A fundamental quest of modern astronomy is to locate the earliest galaxies and study how they influenced the intergalactic medium a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. The abundance of star-forming galaxies is known to decline from redshifts of about 6 to 10, but a key question is the extent of star formation at even earlier times, corresponding to the period when the first galaxies might have emerged. Here we present spectroscopic observations of MACS1149-JD1, a gravitationally lensed galaxy observed when the Universe was less than four per cent of its present age. We detect an emission line of doubly ionized oxygen at a redshift of $9.1096\pm0.0006$, with an uncertainty of one standard deviation. This precisely determined redshift indicates that the red rest-frame optical colour arises from a dominant stellar component that formed about 250 million years after the Big Bang, corresponding to a redshift of about 15. Infrared and nebular lines provide some of our best probes of the physics regulating the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) at high-redshift. However, interpreting the physical conditions of high-redshift galaxies directly from emission lines remains complicated due to inhomogeneities in temperature, density, metallicity, ionisation parameter, and spectral hardness. We present a new suite of cosmological, radiation-hydrodynamics simulations, each centred on a massive Lyman-break galaxy that resolves such properties in an inhomogeneous ISM. Many of the simulated systems exhibit transient but well defined gaseous disks that appear as velocity gradients in [CII]~158.6$\mu$m emission. Spatial and spectral offsets between [CII]~158.6$\mu$m and [OIII]~88.33$\mu$m are common, but not ubiquitous, as each line probes a different phase of the ISM. These systems fall on the local [CII]-SFR relation, consistent with newer observations that question previously observed [CII]~158.6$\mu$m deficits. Our galaxies are consistent with the nebular line properties of observed $z\sim2-3$ galaxies and reproduce offsets on the BPT and mass-excitation diagrams compared to local galaxies due to higher star formation rate (SFR), excitation, and specific-SFR, as well as harder spectra from young, metal-poor binaries. We predict that local calibrations between H$\alpha$ and [OII]~3727$\AA$ luminosity and galaxy SFR apply up to $z>10$, as do the local relations between certain strong line diagnostics (R23 and [OIII]~5007$\AA$/H$\beta$) and galaxy metallicity. We present the results of a model-independent investigation of the rest-frame UV spectra from a comprehensive sample of $394$ quasars in the redshift range $1.5\leq z \leq 7.5$. We fit the main Broad Emission Lines (BELs) in the rest-frame range $1280 \textA \leq \lambda \leq 3000 \textA$ (O I, C II, Si IV, C III, C IV and Mg II) with a lightly-supervised spline fitting technique. Redshifts are derived from the peaks of each fitted BEL and used to compute relative velocity shifts. We show that our method gives unbiased velocity shifts and is insensitive to spectral resolution and instrumental parameters. It is found that the average blueshift of the \cfour\, line with respect to several low-ionisation lines in luminosity-matched samples does not significantly evolve over $1.5\gtrsim z\gtrsim6$. However, the average blueshift increases significantly by a factor $\sim 2.5$ at $z\gtrsim 6$. We propose that this redshift evolution can be explained by \cfour\, winds launched perpendicularly to an accretion disk with increased torus opacity at high-redshift, coupled with a potential orientation-driven selection bias. Our results open new exciting avenues of investigation into young quasars in the reionisation epoch.

We report the discovery of the first spectroscopically resolved C II /C II* 1334, 1335A doublet in the Lyman-break galaxy J0215-0555 at z = 5.754. The separation of the resonant and fluorescent emission channels was possible thanks to the large redshift of the source and long integration time, as well as the small velocity width of the feature, 0.6 +- 0.2A. We model this emission and find that at least two components are required to reproduce the combination of morphologies of C II* emission, C II absorption and emission, and Lyman-alpha emission from the object. We suggest that the close alignment between the fluorescence and Lyman-alpha emission could indicate an ionisation escape channel within the object. While the faintness of such a C II /C II* doublet makes it prohibitively difficult to pursue for similar systems with current facilities, we suggest it can become a valuable porosity diagnostic in the era of JWST and the upcoming generations of ELTs., 5 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

The presence of spectroscopically confirmed Balmer breaks in galaxy spectral energy distributions (SEDs) at $z>9$ provides one of the best probes of the assembly history of the first generations of stars in our Universe. Recent observations of the gravitationally lensed source, MACS 1149_JD1 (JD1), indicate that significant amounts of star formation likely occurred at redshifts as high as $z\simeq15$. The inferred stellar mass, dust mass, and assembly history of JD1, or any other galaxy at these redshifts that exhibits a strong Balmer break, can provide a strong test of our best theoretical models from high-resolution cosmological simulations. In this work, we present the results from a cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of the region surrounding a massive Lyman-break galaxy. For two of our most massive systems, we show that dust preferentially resides in the vicinity of the young stars thereby increasing the strength of the measured Balmer break such that the simulated SEDs are consistent with the photometry of JD1 and two other $z>9$ systems (GN-z10-3 and GN-z9-1) that have proposed Balmer breaks at high redshift. We find strong variations in the shape and luminosity of the SEDs of galaxies with nearly identical stellar and halo masses, indicating the importance of morphology, assembly history, and dust distribution in making inferences on the properties of individual galaxies at high redshifts. We discuss the spectral energy distributions and physical properties of six galaxies whose photometric redshifts suggest they lie beyond a redshift $z\simeq$9. Each was selected on account of a prominent excess seen in the Spitzer/IRAC 4.5$\mu$m band which, for a redshift above $z=9.0$, likely indicates the presence of a rest-frame Balmer break and a stellar component that formed earlier than a redshift $z\simeq10$. In addition to constraining the earlier star formation activity on the basis of fits using stellar population models with BAGPIPES, we have undertaken the necessary, but challenging, follow-up spectroscopy for each candidate using various combinations of Keck/MOSFIRE, VLT/X-shooter, Gemini/FLAMINGOS2 and ALMA. Based on either Lyman-$\alpha$ or [OIII] 88 $\mu$m emission, we determine a convincing redshift of $z$=8.78 for GN-z-10-3 and a likely redshift of $z$=9.28 for the lensed galaxy MACS0416-JD. For GN-z9-1, we conclude the case remains promising for a source beyond $z\simeq$9. Together with earlier spectroscopic data for MACS1149-JD1, our analysis of this enlarged sample provides further support for a cosmic star formation history extending beyond redshifts $z\simeq$10. We use our best-fit stellar population models to reconstruct the past rest-frame UV luminosities of our sources and discuss the implications for tracing earlier progenitors of such systems with the James Webb Space Telescope., Comment: updated version with correction of a numerical error on MACS1149-JD1 age estimate. Galaxy evolution is thought to be driven in large part by the flow of gas between galaxies and the circumgalactic medium (CGM), a halo of metal-enriched gas extending out to $\gtrsim100$ kpc from each galaxy. Studying the spatial structure of the CGM holds promise for understanding these gas flow mechanisms; however, the common method using background quasar sightlines provides minimal spatial information. Recent works have shown the utility of extended background sources such as giant gravitationally lensed arcs. Using background lensed arcs from the CSWA 38 lens system, we continuously probed, at a resolution element of about 15 kpc$^2$, the spatial and kinematic distribution of MgII absorption in a star-forming galaxy at $z=0.77$ (stellar mass $\approx 10^{9.7}$ M$_\odot$, star formation rate $\approx 10$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) at impact parameters $D \simeq 5-30$ kpc. Our results present an anisotropic, optically thick medium whose absorption strength decreases with increasing impact parameter, in agreement with the statistics towards quasars and other gravitational arcs. Furthermore, we find generally low line-of-sight velocities in comparison to the relatively high velocity dispersion in the MgII gas (with typical $\sigma\approx 50$ km s$^{-1}$). While the galaxy itself exhibits a clear outflow (with MgII velocities up to $\sim 500$ km s$^{-1}$) in the down-the-barrel spectrum, the outflow component is sub-dominant and only weakly detected at larger impact parameters probed by the background arcs. Our results provide evidence of mainly dispersion-supported, metal-enriched gas recycling through the CGM., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

We examine the absorption line spectra of a sample of 31 luminous (M_UV=-23) Lyman break galaxies at redshift z~6 using data taken with the FOCAS and OSIRIS spectrographs on the Subaru and GTC telescopes. For two of these sources we present longer exposure data taken at higher spectral resolution from ESO's X-shooter spectrograph. Using these data, we demonstrate the practicality of stacking our lower resolution data to measure the depth of various interstellar and stellar absorption lines to probe the covering fraction of low ionization gas and the gas-phase and stellar metallicities near the end of the era of cosmic reionization. From maximum absorption line depths of SiII1260 and CII1334, we infer a mean covering fraction of >0.85+/-0.16 for our sample. This is larger than that determined using similar methods for lower luminosity galaxies at slightly lower redshifts, suggesting that the most luminous galaxies appear to have a lower escape fraction than fainter galaxies, and therefore may not play a prominent role in concluding reionization. Using various interstellar absorption lines we deduce gas-phase metallicities close to solar indicative of substantial early enrichment. Using selected stellar absorption lines, we model our spectra with a range of metallicities using techniques successfully employed at lower redshift and deduce a stellar metallicity of 0.4 +0.3/-0.1 solar, consistent with the stellar mass - stellar metallicity relation recently found at z~3-5. We discuss the implications of these metallicity estimates for the typical ages of our luminous galaxies and conclude our results imply initial star formation at redshifts z~10, consistent with independent analyses of earlier objects., 13 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, Accepted for Publication in ApJ

Using the largest mosaic of Hubble Space Telescope images around a galaxy cluster, we map the distribution of dark matter throughout an ∼6 × 6 Mpc2 area centred on the cluster MS 0451−03 (z = 0.54, $M_{200}=1.65\times 10^{15}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$). Our joint strong- and weak-lensing analysis shows three possible filaments extending from the cluster, encompassing six group-scale substructures. The dark matter distribution in the cluster core is elongated, consists of two distinct components, and is characterized by a concentration parameter of c200 = 3.79 ± 0.36. By contrast, XMM–Newton observations show the gas distribution to be more spherical, with excess entropy near the core, and a lower concentration of $c_{200}=2.35^{+0.89}_{-0.70}$ (assuming hydrostatic equilibrium). Such a configuration is predicted in simulations of major mergers 2–7 Gyr after the first core passage, when the two dark matter haloes approach second turnaround, and before their gas has relaxed. This post-merger scenario finds further support in optical spectroscopy of the cluster’s member galaxies, which shows that star formation was abruptly quenched 5 Gyr ago. MS 0451−03 will be an ideal target for future studies of the growth of structure along filaments, star formation processes after a major merger, and the late-stage evolution of cluster collisions.

Escaping Lyman continuum photons from galaxies likely reionized the intergalactic medium at redshifts $z\gtrsim6$. However, the Lyman continuum is not directly observable at these redshifts and secondary indicators of Lyman continuum escape must be used to estimate the budget of ionizing photons. Observationally, at redshifts $z\sim2-3$ where the Lyman continuum is observationally accessible, surveys have established that many objects that show appreciable Lyman continuum escape fractions $f_{esc}$ also show enhanced [OIII]/[OII] (O$_{32}$) emission line ratios. Here, we use radiative transfer analyses of cosmological zoom-in simulations of galaxy formation to study the physical connection between $f_{esc}$ and O$_{32}$. Like the observations, we find that the largest $f_{esc}$ values occur at elevated O$_{32}\sim3-10$ and that the combination of high $f_{esc}$ and low O$_{32}$ is extremely rare. While high $f_{esc}$ and O$_{32}$ often are observable concurrently, the timescales of the physical origin for the processes are very different. Large O$_{32}$ values fluctuate on short ($\sim$1 Myr) timescales during the Wolf-Rayet-powered phase after the formation of star clusters, while channels of low absorption are established over tens of megayears by collections of supernovae. We find that while there is no direct causal relation between $f_{esc}$ and O$_{32}$, high $f_{esc}$ most often occurs after continuous input from star formation-related feedback events that have corresponding excursions to large O$_{32}$ emission. These calculations are in agreement with interpretations of observations that large $f_{esc}$ tends to occur when O$_{32}$ is large, but large O$_{32}$ does not necessarily imply efficient Lyman continuum escape., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJL on September 15, 2020

Measuring the chemical composition of galaxies is crucial to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution models. However, such measurements are extremely challenging for quiescent galaxies at high redshifts, which have faint stellar continua and compact sizes, making it difficult to detect absorption lines and nearly impossible to spatially resolve them. Gravitational lensing offers the opportunity to study these galaxies with detailed spectroscopy that can be spatially resolved. In this work, we analyze deep spectra of MRG-M0138, a lensed quiescent galaxy at z = 1.98 which is the brightest of its kind, with an H-band magnitude of 17.1. Taking advantage of full spectral fitting, we measure $[{\rm Mg/Fe}]=0.51\pm0.05$, $[\rm{Fe/H}]=0.26\pm0.04$, and, for the first time, the stellar abundances of 6 other elements in this galaxy. We further constrained, also for the first time in a $z\sim2$ galaxy, radial gradients in stellar age, [Fe/H], and [Mg/Fe]. We detect no gradient in age or [Mg/Fe] and a slightly negative gradient in [Fe/H], which has a slope comparable to that seen in local early-type galaxies. Our measurements show that not only is MRG-M0138 very Mg-enhanced compared to the centers of local massive early-type galaxies, it is also very iron rich. These dissimilar abundances suggest that even the inner regions of massive galaxies have experienced significant mixing of stars in mergers, in contrast to a purely inside-out growth model. The abundance pattern observed in MRG-M0138 challenges simple galactic chemical evolution models that vary only the star formation timescale and shows the need for more elaborate models., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Identifying low-redshift galaxies that emit Lyman Continuum radiation (LyC leakers) is one of the primary, indirect methods of studying galaxy formation in the epoch of reionization. However, not only has it proved challenging to identify such systems, it also remains uncertain whether the low-redshift LyC leakers are truly "analogues" of the sources that reionized the Universe. Here, we use high-resolution cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations to examine whether simulated galaxies in the epoch of reionization share similar emission line properties to observed LyC leakers at $z\sim3$ and $z\sim0$. We find that the simulated galaxies with high LyC escape fractions ($f_{\rm esc}$) often exhibit high O32 and populate the same regions of the R23-O32 plane as $z\sim3$ LyC leakers. However, we show that viewing angle, metallicity, and ionisation parameter can all impact where a galaxy resides on the O32-$f_{\rm esc}$ plane. Based on emission line diagnostics and how they correlate with $f_{\rm esc}$, lower-metallicity LyC leakers at $z\sim3$ appear to be good analogues of reionization-era galaxies. In contrast, local [SII]-deficient galaxies do not overlap with the simulated high-redshift LyC leakers on the SII-BPT diagram; however, this diagnostic may still be useful for identifying leakers. We use our simulated galaxies to develop multiple new diagnostics to identify LyC leakers using IR and nebular emission lines. We show that our model using only [CII]$_{\rm 158\mu m}$ and [OIII]$_{\rm 88\mu m}$ can identify potential leakers from non-leakers from the local Dwarf Galaxy Survey. Finally, we apply this diagnostic to known high-redshift galaxies and find that MACS1149_JD1 at $z=9.1$ is the most likely galaxy to be actively contributing to the reionization of the Universe., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, Accepted to MNRAS

We present a new method to study the contribution of faint sources to the UV background using the 1D correlation of metal absorbers with the intergalactic medium (IGM) transmission in a Quasi Stellar Object (QSO) sightline. We take advantage of a sample of $25$ high signal-to-noise ratio QSO spectra to retrieve $150$ triply-ionised carbon (\cfour) absorbers at $4.5\lesssim z\lesssim 6.2$, of which $37$ systems whose expected H{~\small I} absorption lie in the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. We derive improved constraints on the cosmic density of \cfour \,at $4.3< z < 6.2$ and infer from abundance-matching that \cfour \,absorbers trace $M_{\text{UV}}\lesssim -16$ galaxies. Correlation with the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest of the QSOs indicates that these objects are surrounded by a highly opaque region at $r\lesssim 5 $ cMpc/h followed by an excess of transmission at $r\gtrsim 10$ cMpc/h detected at $2.7\sigma$. This is in contrast to equivalent measurements at lower redshifts where only the opaque trough is detected. We interpret this excess as a statistical enhancement of the local photoionisation rate due to clustered faint galaxies around the \cfour \,absorbers. Using the analytical framework described in Paper I of this series, we derive a constraint on the average product of the escape fraction and the Lyman continuum photon production efficiency of the galaxy population clustered around the \cfour \,absorbers, $\log \langle f_{\text{esc}}\xi_{\text{ion}}\rangle /[{\rm erg^{-1}~Hz}] = 25.01^{+0.30}_{-0.19}$. This implies that faint galaxies beyond the reach of current facilities may have harder radiation fields and/or larger escape fractions than currently detected objects at the end of the reionisation epoch.

We introduce a new method for determining the influence of galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) on the physical state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at high redshift and illustrate its potential via a first application to the field of the $z=6.42$ QSO J1148+5251. By correlating the spatial positions of spectroscopically-confirmed Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) with fluctuations in the Lyman alpha forest seen in the high signal-to-noise spectrum of a background QSO, we provide a statistical measure of the typical escape fraction of Lyman continuum photons close to the end of cosmic reionisation. Here we use Keck DEIMOS spectroscopy to locate 7 colour-selected LBGs in the redshift range $5.3\lesssim z\lesssim 6.4$ and confirm a faint $z=5.701$ AGN. We then examine the spatial correlation between this sample and Ly$\alpha$/Ly$\beta$ transmission fluctuations in a Keck ESI spectrum of the QSO. Interpreting the statistical HI proximity effect as arising from faint galaxies clustered around the detected LBGs, we translate the observed mean Ly$\alpha$ transmitted flux around an average detected LBG into a constraint on the mean escape fraction $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle\geq0.08$ at $z\simeq6$. We also report evidence of the individual transverse HI proximity effect of a $z=6.177$ luminous LBG via a Ly$\beta$ transmission spike and two broad Ly$\alpha$ transmission spikes around the $z=5.701$ AGN. We discuss the possible origin of such associations which suggest that while faint galaxies are primarily driving reionisation, luminous galaxies and AGN may provide important contributions to the UV background or thermal fluctuations of the IGM at $z\simeq6$. We discuss the rest-frame ultraviolet emission line spectra of a large (~100) sample of low luminosity redshift z~3.1 Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) drawn from a Subaru imaging survey in the SSA22 survey field. Our earlier work based on smaller samples indicated that such sources have high [OIII]/[OII] line ratios possibly arising from a hard ionising spectrum that may be typical of similar sources in the reionisation era. With optical spectra secured from VLT/VIMOS, we re-examine the nature of the ionising radiation in a larger sample using the strength of the high ionisation diagnostic emission lines of CIII]1909, CIV1549, HeII1640, and OIII]1661,1666 in various stacked subsets. Our analysis confirms earlier suggestions of a correlation between the strength of Ly-alpha and CIII] emission and we find similar trends with broad band UV luminosity and rest-frame UV colour. Using various diagnostic line ratios and our stellar photoionisation models, we determine both the gas phase metallicity and hardness of the ionisation spectrum characterised by xi_ion - the number of Lyman continuum photons per UV luminosity. We confirm our earlier suggestion that xi_ion is significantly larger for LAEs than for continuum-selected Lyman break galaxies, particularly for those LAEs with the faintest UV luminosities. We briefly discuss the implications for cosmic reionisation if the metal-poor intensely star-forming systems studied here are representative examples of those at much higher redshift., 15 pages, 9 figures. Dark matter-only simulations predict that dark matter halos have steep, cuspy inner density profiles, while observations of dwarf galaxies find a range of inner slopes that are often much shallower. There is debate whether this discrepancy can be explained by baryonic feedback or if it may require modified dark matter models. In Paper 1 of this series, we obtained high-resolution integral field H$\alpha$ observations for 26 dwarf galaxies with $M_*=10^{8.1}-10^{9.7}\textrm{M}_\odot$. We derived rotation curves from our observations, which we use here to construct mass models. We model the total mass distribution as the sum of a generalized Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) dark matter halo and the stellar and gaseous components. Our analysis of the slope of the dark matter density profile focuses on the inner 300-800 pc, chosen based on the resolution of our data and the region resolved by modern hydrodynamical simulations. The inner slope measured using ionized and molecular gas tracers is consistent, and it is additionally robust to the choice of stellar mass-to-light ratio. We find a range of dark matter profiles, including both cored and cuspy slopes, with an average of $\rho_{\rm DM}\sim r^{-0.74\pm 0.07}$, shallower than the NFW profile, but steeper than those typically observed for lower-mass galaxies with $M_*\sim 10^{7.5}\textrm{M}_\odot$. Simulations that reproduce the observed slopes in those lower-mass galaxies also produce slopes that are too shallow for galaxies in our mass range. We therefore conclude that supernova feedback models do not yet provide a fully satisfactory explanation for the observed trend in dark matter slopes.

We discuss the rest-frame optical emission line spectra of a large (~50) sample of z=3.1 Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) whose physical properties suggest such sources are promising analogs of galaxies in the reionization era. Reliable Lyman continuum escape fractions have now been determined for a large sample of such LAEs from the Lyman Continuum Escape Survey (LACES) undertaken via deep HST imaging in the SSA22 survey area reported in Fletcher et al. (2019). Using new measures of [OII] emission secured from Keck MOSFIRE spectra we re-examine, for a larger sample, earlier claims that Lyman continuum leakages may correlate with the nebular emission line ratio [OIII]/[OII] as expected for density-bound HII regions. We find that a large [OIII]/[OII] line ratio is indeed a necessary condition for Lyman continuum leakage, strengthening earlier claims made using smaller samples at various redshifts. However, not all LAEs with large [OIII]/[OII] line ratios are leakers and leaking radiation appears not to be associated with differences in other spectral diagnostics. This suggests the detection of leaking radiation is modulated by an additional property, possibly the viewing angle for porous HII regions. We discuss our new results in the context of the striking bimodality of LAE leakers and non-leakers found in the LACES program and the implications for the sources of cosmic reionization., 15 pages, 6 figures. Dark-matter-only simulations predict that dark matter halos have cusp-like inner density profiles, while observations of low-mass galaxies have found a range of inner slopes that are typically much shallower. It is still not well established whether this discrepancy can be explained by baryonic feedback or if it may require modified dark matter models. To better understand the diversity of dark matter profiles in dwarf galaxies, we undertook a survey of 26 low-mass galaxies ($\log M_*/\textrm{M}_\odot = 8.4-9.8$, $v_{\rm max} = 50-140$ km s$^{-1}$) within 30 Mpc using the Palomar Cosmic Web Imager, which is among the largest integral field spectroscopic surveys of its type. In this paper, we derive H$\alpha$ velocity fields for the full sample with a typical spatial resolution of $\sim$160 pc. We extract rotation curves and verify their robustness to several choices in the analysis. We present a method for improving the velocity precision obtained from image slicing spectrographs using narrowband H$\alpha$ images. For 11 galaxies, we compare the H$\alpha$ velocity fields to CO kinematics measured using CARMA, finding the maps to be in good agreement. The standard deviation of the difference is typically $\sim$7 km s$^{-1}$, comparable to the level of turbulence in the interstellar medium, showing that the two tracers have substantially the same bulk kinematics. In a companion paper, we will use the rotation curves produced here to construct mass models of the galaxies and determine their dark matter density profiles.

We recommend a conceptual design study for a spectroscopic facility in the southern hemisphere comprising a large diameter telescope, fiber system, and spectrographs collectively optimized for massively-multiplexed spectroscopy. As a baseline, we propose an 11.4-meter aperture, optical spectroscopic survey telescope with a five square degree field of view. We present Keck/MOSFIRE $H$-band spectroscopy targeting C$\,$III] $\lambda$1907,1909 in a $z=7.5056$ galaxy previously identified via Ly$\alpha$ emission. We detect strong line emission at $1.621\pm0.002\,\mu$m with a line flux of ($2.63\pm0.52$)$\times10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. We tentatively identify this line as [C$\,$III] $\lambda$1907, but we are unable to detect C$\,$III] $\lambda$1909 owing to sky emission at the expected location. This gives a galaxy systemic redshift, $z_{sys}=7.5032\pm0.0003$, with a velocity offset to Ly$\alpha$ of $\Delta$v$_{Ly\alpha}$ = $88\pm27$ km s$^{-1}$. The ratio of combined C$\,$III]/Ly$\alpha$ is 0.30-0.45, one of the highest values measured for any $z>2$ galaxy. We do not detect Si$\,$III] $\lambda\lambda$1883, 1892, and place an upper limit on Si$\,$III]/C$\,$III] $, Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the stellar mass-[Fe/H] and mass-[Mg/H] relation of quiescent galaxies in two galaxy clusters at $z\sim0.39$ and $z\sim0.54$. We derive the age, [Fe/H], and [Mg/Fe] for each individual galaxy using a full-spectrum fitting technique. By comparing with the relations for $z\sim0$ SDSS galaxies, we confirm our previous finding that the mass-[Fe/H] relation evolves with redshift. The mass-[Fe/H] relation at higher redshift has lower normalization and possibly steeper slope. However, based on our sample, the mass-[Mg/H] relation does not evolve over the observed redshift range. We use a simple analytic chemical evolution model to constrain average outflow that these galaxies experience over their lifetime, via the calculation of mass-loading factor. We find that the average mass-loading factor $\eta$ is a power-law function of galaxy stellar mass, $\eta \propto M_*^{-0.21\pm0.09}$. The measured mass-loading factors are consistent with the results of other observational methods for outflow measurements and with the predictions where outflow is caused by star formation feedback in turbulent disks., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Richard Ellis recalls the life of the eminent cosmic-ray physicist

We present the results of a study investigating the sizes and morphologies of redshift 4 < z < 8 galaxies in the CANDELS GOODS-S, HUDF and HUDF parallel fields. Based on non-parametric measurements and incorporating a careful treatment of measurement biases, we quantify the typical size of galaxies at each redshift as the peak of the log-normal size distribution, rather than the arithmetic mean size. Parameterizing the evolution of galaxy half-light radius as $r_{50} \propto (1+z)^n$, we find $n = -0.20 \pm 0.26$ at bright UV-luminosities ($0.3L_{*(z=3)} < L < L_*$) and $n = -0.47 \pm 0.62$ at faint luminosities ($0.12L_* < L < 0.3L_*$). Furthermore, simulations based on artificially redshifting our z~4 galaxy sample show that we cannot reject the null hypothesis of no size evolution. We show that this result is caused by a combination of the size-dependent completeness of high-redshift galaxy samples and the underestimation of the sizes of the largest galaxies at a given epoch. To explore the evolution of galaxy morphology we first compare asymmetry measurements to those from a large sample of simulated single S\'ersic profiles, in order to robustly categorise galaxies as either `smooth' or `disturbed'. Comparing the disturbed fraction amongst bright ($M_{UV} \leq -20$) galaxies at each redshift to that obtained by artificially redshifting our z~4 galaxy sample, while carefully matching the size and UV-luminosity distributions, we find no clear evidence for evolution in galaxy morphology over the redshift interval 4 < z < 8. Therefore, based on our results, a bright ($M_{UV} \leq -20$) galaxy at z~6 is no more likely to be measured as `disturbed' than a comparable galaxy at z~4, given the current observational constraints., Comment: 29 pages, 25 figures, 4 tables, published in MNRAS

Physical properties of galaxies at z>7 are of interest for understanding both the early phases of star formation and the process of cosmic reionization. Chemical abundance measurements offer valuable information on the integrated star formation history, and hence ionizing photon production, as well as the rapid gas accretion expected at such high redshifts. We use reported measurements of [O III] 88$��$m emission and star formation rate to estimate gas-phase oxygen abundances in five galaxies at z=7.1-9.1 using the direct T_e method. We find typical abundances 12+log(O/H) = 7.9 ($\sim$0.2 times the solar value) and an evolution of 0.9$\pm$0.5 dex in oxygen abundance at fixed stellar mass from z$\simeq$8 to 0. These results are compatible with theoretical predictions, albeit with large (conservative) uncertainties in both mass and metallicity. We assess both statistical and systematic uncertainties to identify promising means of improvement with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In particular we highlight [O III] 52$��$m as a valuable feature for robust metallicity measurements. Precision of 0.1-0.2 dex in T_e-based O/H abundance can be reasonably achieved for galaxies at z$\approx$5-8 by combining [O III] 52$��$m with rest-frame optical strong lines. It will also be possible to probe gas mixing and mergers via resolved T_e-based abundances on kpc scales. With ALMA and JWST, direct metallicity measurements will thus be remarkably accessible in the reionization epoch., 12 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables. Accepted for publication in ApJ

Quasar proximity zones at z > 5.5 correspond to overdense and overionized environments. Galaxies found inside proximity zones can therefore display features that would otherwise be masked by absorption in the intergalactic medium. We demonstrate the utility of this quasar-galaxy synergy by reporting the discovery of the first three “proximate Lyα emitters” (LAEs) within the proximity zone of quasar J0836+0054 at z = 5.795 (Aerith A, B, and C). Aerith A, located behind the quasar with an impact parameter D^{\perp} = 278 \pm 8 pkpc, provides the first detection of an Lyα transverse proximity effect. We model the transmission and show that it constrains the onset of J0836ʼs quasar phase to 0.2Myr < 28Myr < t in the past. The second object, Aerith B at a distance D < 912 pkpc from the quasar, displays a bright and broad double-peaked Lyα emission line. The peak separation implies a low ionizing f_{esc} \leqslant 1%. We fit the Lyα line with an outflowing shell model, finding a typical central density log N_{HI}/cm^{-2} = 19.3_{-0.2}^{+0.8}, outflow velocity v_{out} = 16_{-11}^{+4}km s^{-1}, and gas temperature log T/K = 3.8_{-0.7}^{+0.8} compared to 2 < z < 3 analog LAEs. We detect object Aerith C via an Lyα emission line at z = 5.726. This corresponds with the edge of the quasar’s proximity zone (Dz < 0.02), suggesting that the proximity zone is truncated by a density fluctuation. Via the analyses conducted here, we illustrate how proximate LAEs offer unique insight into the ionizing properties of both quasars and galaxies during hydrogen reionization.

Galactic-scale outflows regulate the stellar mass growth and chemical enrichment of galaxies, yet key outflow properties such as the chemical composition and mass loss rate remain largely unknown. We address these properties with Keck/ESI echellete spectra of nine gravitationally lensed z=2-3 star forming galaxies, probing a range of absorption transitions. Interstellar absorption in our sample is dominated by outflowing material, with typical velocities -150 km/s. Approximately 80% of the total column density is associated with a net outflow. Mass loss rates in the low ionization phase are comparable to or in excess of the star formation rate, with total outflow rates likely higher when accounting for ionized gas. Of order half of the heavy element yield from star formation is ejected in the low ionization phase, confirming that outflows play a critical role in regulating galaxy chemical evolution. Covering fractions vary and are in general non-uniform, with most galaxies having incomplete covering by the low ions across all velocities. Low ion abundance patterns show remarkably little scatter, revealing a distinct "chemical fingerprint" of outflows. Gas phase Si/Fe abundances are significantly super-solar ([Si/Fe]$\gtrsim$0.4) indicating a combination of $\alpha$-enhancement and dust depletion. Derived properties are comparable to the most kinematically broad, metal-rich, and depleted intergalactic absorption systems at similar redshifts, suggesting that these extreme systems are associated with galactic outflows at impact parameters conservatively within a few tens of kpc. Quiescent galaxies at $z \gtrsim 2$ are compact and have weak or absent emission lines, making it difficult to spatially resolve their kinematics and stellar populations using ground-based spectroscopy. Gravitationally lensed examples provide a promising route forward, but such objects are very rare. We describe a search in the fields of 232 galaxy clusters that has uncovered five bright ($H_{\rm AB} < 20$) lensed galaxies with red near-infrared colors. These include MRG-M0138, the brightest lensed galaxy known in the near-infrared. Analysis of near-infrared spectra and multiband photometry confirms that all are quiescent galaxies at z=1.95-2.64 with stellar ages of 0.5-1.4 Gyr (corresponding to formation epochs $z_{\rm form} \simeq 3-4$) and stellar masses of $10^{11.6-12.8} \mu^{-1} M_{\odot}$, where $\mu$ is the magnification. In three cases we derive lens models and reconstruct the source structure; these galaxies are massive ($M_* \gtrsim 10^{11.0} M_{\odot}$) and follow the mass--size relation defined by unlensed samples. In two of these three galaxies, the main structural component is an inclined disk. Weak emission lines are detected in four of five galaxies with high ratios [NII]/H$\alpha$~2-6 that are inconsistent with a star formation origin. Based on the line ratios, the H$\alpha$ equivalent widths, and the distribution and kinematics of the gas, we infer that shocks are likely present in at least two galaxies and could be present in all of the line emitters. We speculate that these could be analogs of local galaxies in which AGN jet-driven outflows are thought to heat the interstellar medium and suppress star formation.
