Abstract

Background: The systematic literature review with additional descriptive analysis at hand focuses on analysing returns management in e-commerce, which is an increasingly critical issue as the volume of online shopping is rising. Methods: Drawing from a comprehensive search of academic databases and a manual review of Google Scholar, 54 articles dating from 2007 onwards were collected and fully read. Results: The review reveals a main research effort emerging mainly from Germany and other countries, with a notable focus on fashion retail. The bulk of these studies aim to understand and reduce the frequency of customer returns, addressing a substantial operational challenge for online retailers. The findings provide multiple research streams extracted from the collected literature and combined to an overview. Conclusions: Through this, there are tendencies which can be interpreted to derive the evolution of the research field. The illustrated results in this review paint a detailed picture of the existing research landscape. This highlights the importance of ongoing research, which, e.g., holds potential benefits for customer satisfaction and environmental sustainability. The review also lists future research directions, recommending the continued investigation of areas such as predictive analytics and customer behaviour to further refine returns management practices. 15. Decision Support for Road Safety: Development of Key Performance Indicators for Police Analysts

Abstract

In 2017, five out of 100,000 people were killed by road accidents in Europe. In order to reduce this number with appropriate measures, the police nowadays manually defines combinations of accident attributes (e. g., accidents on slippery road surfaces at night), which then form the basis for tracking the number of accidents over time. The aim of this paper is to combine the following data analysis approaches in order to detect interesting attribute combinations, also referred to as “itemsets”, relevant for current and future observations. The resulting combinations are proposed to the police as new key performance indicators and can also be used directly for planning police measures to increase road safety. A four-stage decision support system is introduced that employs frequent itemset mining in the first stage. The temporal aspect of traffic accident data is illustrated by time series containing, for each itemset, the relative frequencies of accidents with the corresponding attribute combination. In the second step, the time series are grouped according to their shape by time series clustering and classification. In the third step, we determine the optimal forecasting method for each generated cluster of time series. Based on the prediction of future frequencies, we identify the most interesting attribute combinations in the last step. These are displayed geographically so that a police analyst can easily identify current and developing hot spots.

17. On the Cost of Introducing Speech-Like Properties to a Stimulus for Auditory Steady-State Response Measurements

Abstract

Validating hearing-aid fittings in prelingual infants is challenging because typical measures (aided audiometry, etc.) are impossible with infants. One objective alternative uses an aided auditory steady-state response (ASSR) measurement. To make an appropriate measurement, the hearing aid’s signal-processing features must be activated (or deactivated) as if the ASSR stimulus was real speech. Rather than manipulating the hearing-aid settings to achieve this, an ASSR stimulus with speech-like properties was developed. This promotes clinical simplicity and face validity of the validation. The stimulus consists of narrow-band CE-Chirps®, modified to mimic the International Speech Test Signal (ISTS). This study examines the cost of introducing the speech-like features into the ASSR stimulus. Thus, 90 to 100 Hz ASSRs were recorded to the ISTS-modified stimulus as well as an equivalent stimulus without the ISTS modification, presented through insert phones to 10 young normal-hearing subjects. Noise-corrected ASSR magnitudes and clinically relevant detection times were estimated and analyzed with mixed-model analyses of variance. As a supplement, the observed changes to the ASSR magnitudes were compared with an objective characterization of the stimuli based on modulation power. The main findings were a reduction in ASSR magnitude of 4 dB and an increase in detection time by a factor of 1.5 for the ISTS-modified stimulus compared with the standard. Detection rates were unaffected given sufficient recording time. For clinical use of the hearing-aid validation procedure, the key metric is the detection time. While this varied considerably across subjects, the observed 50% mean increase corresponds to less than 1 min of additional recording time.
