The recent rise in artificial intelligence systems, such as ChatGPT, poses a fundamental problem for the educational sector. In universities and schools, many forms of assessment, such as coursework, are completed without invigilation. Therefore, students could hand in work as their own which is in fact completed by AI. Since the COVID pandemic, the sector has additionally accelerated its reliance on unsupervised 'take home exams'. If students cheat using AI and this is undetected, the integrity of the way in which students are assessed is threatened. We report a rigorous, blind study in which we injected 100% AI written submissions into the examinations system in five undergraduate modules, across all years of study, for a BSc degree in Psychology at a reputable UK university. We found that 94% of our AI submissions were undetected. The grades awarded to our AI submissions were on average half a grade boundary higher than that achieved by real students. Background: A strong evidence base indicates that maternal caregivers' experience of intimate partner violence [IPV] impacts children's health, cognitive development, and risk-taking behaviors. Our objective was to review peer-reviewed literature describing the associations between a child's indirect exposure to IPV and corresponding nutrition outcomes, with a particular focus on fragile settings in low and middle-income countries [LMICs]., Methods: We conducted a rapid evidence assessment to synthesize quantitative associations between maternal caregivers' IPV experience and children's nutrition/growth outcomes (birthweight, feeding, and growth indicators). We included peer-reviewed research, published in English or Spanish after the year 2000, conducted in fragile settings in LMICs., Results: We identified 86 publications that fit inclusion criteria. Amongst all associations assessed, a maternal caregiver's experience of combined forms of IPV (physical, sexual and emotional) or physical IPV only, were most consistently associated with lower birthweight, especially during pregnancy. Women of child-bearing age, including adolescents, exposed to at least one type of IPV showed a decreased likelihood of following recommended breastfeeding practices. Lifetime maternal experience of combined IPV was significantly associated with stunting among children under 5 years of age in the largest study included, though findings in smaller studies were inconsistent. Maternal experience of physical or combined IPV were inconsistently associated with underweight or wasting in the first five years. Maternal experience of sexual IPV during pregnancy appeared to predict worsened lipid profiles among children., Conclusion: Maternal caregivers' experience of IPV is significantly associated with low birthweight and suboptimal breastfeeding practices, whereas studies showed inconsistent associations with child growth indicators or blood nutrient levels. Future research should focus on outcomes in children aged 2 years and older, investigation of feeding practices beyond breastfeeding, and examination of risk during time periods physiologically relevant to the outcomes. The thalamus is a brain region formed from functionally distinct nuclei, which contribute in important ways to various cognitive processes. Yet, much of the human neuroscience literature treats the thalamus as one homogeneous region, and consequently the unique contribution of specific nuclei to behaviour remains under-appreciated. This is likely due in part to the technical challenge of dissociating nuclei using conventional structural imaging approaches. Yet, multiple algorithms exist in the neuroimaging literature for the automated segmentation of thalamic nuclei. One recent approach developed by Iglesias and colleagues (2018) generates segmentations by applying a probabilistic atlas to subject-space anatomical images using the FreeSurfer software. Here, we systematically validate the efficacy of this segmentation approach in delineating thalamic nuclei using Human Connectome Project data. We provide several metrics quantifying the quality of segmentations relative to the Morel stereotaxic atlas, a widely accepted anatomical atlas based on cyto- and myeloarchitecture. The automated segmentation approach generated boundaries between the anterior, lateral, posterior, and medial divisions of the thalamus. Segmentation efficacy, as measured by metrics of dissimilarity (Average Hausdorff Distance) and overlap (DICE coefficient) within groups was mixed. Regions were better delineated in anterior, lateral and medial thalamus than the posterior thalamus, however all the volumes for all segmented nuclei were significantly different to the corresponding region of the Morel atlas. Emotion-laden events and objects are typically better remembered than neutral ones. This is usually explained by stronger functional coupling in the brain evoked by emotional content. However, most research on this issue has focused on functional connectivity evoked during or after learning. The effect of an individual's functional connectivity at rest is unknown. Our pre-registered study addresses this issue by analysing a large database, the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience, which includes resting-state data and emotional memory scores from 303 participants aged 18-87 years. We applied regularised regression to select the relevant connections and replicated previous findings that whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity can predict age and intelligence in younger adults. However, whole-brain functional connectivity predicted neither an emotional enhancement effect (i.e., the degree to which emotionally positive or negative events are remembered better than neutral events) nor a positivity bias effect (i.e., the degree to which emotionally positive events are remembered better than negative events), failing to support our pre-registered hypotheses. These results imply a small or no association between individual differences in functional connectivity at rest and emotional memory, and support recent notions that resting-state functional connectivity is not always useful in predicting individual differences in behavioural measures., (© 2022. Purpose: The prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) has been on the rise since it was first described in the 1990s. Several diseases and exogenous factors have been associated with EoE. Our aim was to investigate the epidemiology of EoE in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients., Methods: We identified individuals with CF from September 2014 to September 2019 within a database (IBM Explorys Solutions, Inc.). The prevalence of EoE in patients with CF was compared to the general population., Results: The database included 36,111,860 patients during the 5-year study period: 12,950 with CF (0.036%) and 28,090 with EoE (0.078%). EoE prevalence was higher in CF patients than the general population (46 in 10,000 vs. 7.8 in 10,000, p <0.001). Patients with CF and EoE were more likely to be male (50% vs. 33.5%, p <0.008), children (33.3% vs. 16.5%, p <0.001), and non-Hispanic (100% vs. 88.7%, p <0.001) than CF patients without EoE. CF with EoE patients were more likely to be children than EoE only (33.3% vs. 10.5%, p <0.001). Allergic conditions were generally more prevalent in CF with EoE than CF only (83.3% vs. 68.3%, p =0.01) and EoE only (83.3% vs. 69.3%, p =0.014)., Conclusion: EoE is nearly 6-times more prevalent in CF patients. Those patients had higher incidence of other atopic conditions. This paper provides an analytical overview of different types of psychological interventions that have demonstrated efficacy in low-income and/or humanitarian settings and points to special considerations that may be needed if used with women who have been subjected to gender-based violence (GBV). This paper reviews diverse therapeutic modalities and contrasts them across several domains, including their conventional use and principles; their documented use and efficacy in humanitarian settings; any special considerations or modifications necessary for GBV-affected clients; and any additional resources or implementation concerns when working in low-income contexts. By examining the evidence base of multiple interventions, we hope to provide clinicians and GBV-prevention advocates with an overview of tools/approaches to provide survivor-centered, trauma-informed responses to GBV survivors. This analysis responds to the growing recognition that gender-based violence, in particular intimate partner violence and sexual violence, is strongly associated with mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress. This is likely to be exacerbated in humanitarian contexts, where people often experience multiple and intersecting traumatic experiences. The need for mental health services in these settings is increasingly recognized, and a growing number of psychological interventions have been shown to be effective when delivered by lay providers and in humanitarian settings.

HER2-targeted therapy dramatically improves outcomes in early breast cancer. Here we report the results of two HER2-targeted combinations in the neoadjuvant I-SPY2 phase 2 adaptive platform trial for early breast cancer at high risk of recurrence: ado-trastuzumab emtansine plus pertuzumab (T-DM1/P) and paclitaxel, trastuzumab and pertuzumab (THP). Eligible women have >2.5 cm clinical stage II/III HER2 + breast cancer, adaptively randomized to T-DM1/P, THP, or a common control arm of paclitaxel/trastuzumab (TH), followed by doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide, then surgery. Both T-DM1/P and THP arms 'graduate' in all subtypes: predicted pCR rates are 63%, 72% and 33% for T-DM1/P (n = 52), THP (n = 45) and TH (n = 31) respectively. Toxicity burden is similar between arms. Degree of HER2 pathway signaling and phosphorylation in pretreatment biopsy specimens are associated with response to both T-DM1/P and THP and can further identify highly responsive HER2 + tumors to HER2-directed therapy. The non-nucleoside analog gemcitabine has been the standard of care for treating pancreatic cancer. The drug shows good potency in pancreatic cancer cells in vitro but, due to poor bioavailability, requires administration in large doses by infusion and this systemic exposure results in significant toxicity for the patient. Genes have been identified that, when silenced by siRNA, synergize with gemcitabine treatment and offer a means of reducing the gemcitabine dosage required for efficacy. However, benefiting from the synergism between the two agents requires that the gemcitabine and siRNA penetrate the same cells. To ensure co-delivery, we incorporated gemcitabine covalently within siRNAs against targets synergistic with gemcitabine (CHK1 or RAD17). We demonstrated that specific bases within an siRNA can be replaced with gemcitabine to increase efficacy. The result is a single drug molecule that simultaneously co-delivers gemcitabine and a synergistic siRNA. The siRNA-gemcitabine constructs demonstrate a 5-30-fold improvement in potency compared with gemcitabine alone. Co-delivering a CHK1 siRNA-gemcitabine construct together with a WEE1 siRNA resulted in a 10-fold improvement in IC 50 compared with gemcitabine alone. These constructs demonstrate efficacy across a wide array of pancreatic tumor cells and may represent a novel therapeutic approach for treating pancreatic cancer., (© The Author(s) 2020. Motivation: Approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) is an important framework within which to infer the structure and parameters of a systems biology model. It is especially suitable for biological systems with stochastic and nonlinear dynamics, for which the likelihood functions are intractable. However, the associated computational cost often limits ABC to models that are relatively quick to simulate in practice., Results: We here present a Julia package, GpABC, that implements parameter inference and model selection for deterministic or stochastic models using (i) standard rejection ABC or sequential Monte Carlo ABC or (ii) ABC with Gaussian process emulation. Dynamical systems with intricate behaviour are all-pervasive in biology. Many of the most interesting biological processes indicate the presence of bifurcations, i.e. phenomena where a small change in a system parameter causes qualitatively different behaviour. Bifurcation theory has become a rich field of research in its own right and evaluating the bifurcation behaviour of a given dynamical system can be challenging. An even greater challenge, however, is to learn the bifurcation structure of dynamical systems from data, where the precise model structure is not known. Here, we study one aspects of this problem: the practical implications that the presence of bifurcations has on our ability to infer model parameters and initial conditions from empirical data; we focus on the canonical co-dimension 1 bifurcations and provide a comprehensive analysis of how dynamics, and our ability to infer kinetic parameters are linked. Purpose: To evaluate the concentration of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFB1) levels in a rat pleural effusion obtained by inoculation of intrapleural bacteria or turpentine through thoracentesis., Methods: Thirty-Nine Wistar rats were divided into three groups: Staphylococcus aureus (SA, n = 17); Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP, n = 12); and turpentine (control, n = 10). Pleural fluid was collected through ultrasound-guided thoracentesis 12 h, 24 h, and 36 h after instillation of bacteria or turpentine. Levels of TGFB1 were measured in pleural fluid., Results: At 12 h, mean TGFB1concentrations were 5.3450 pg/mL in the SA group, 5.3449 pg/mL in the SP group, and 5.3450 pg/mL in controls. At 24 h, they were 4.6700 pg/mL in the SA group, 4.6700 pg/mL in the SP group, and 4.6700 pg/mL in controls. At 36 h, they were 4.6699 pg/mL in the SA group and in control. No difference was observed among the groups in mean TGFB1concentration (p = 0.12); however, a significant intragroup reduction in mean TGFB1 was observed between 12 and 24 h (p < 0.01)., Conclusion: The transforming growth factor beta 1 concentrations were not useful as a diagnostic tool or an early marker of infected pleural effusion.

Computer science offers a large set of tools for prototyping, writing, running, testing, validating, sharing and reproducing results; however, computational science lags behind. In the best case, authors may provide their source code as a compressed archive and they may feel confident their research is reproducible. But this is not exactly true. James Buckheit and David Donoho proposed more than two decades ago that an article about computational results is advertising, not scholarship. The actual scholarship is the full software environment, code, and data that produced the result. This implies new workflows, in particular in peer-reviews. Existing journals have been slow to adapt: source codes are rarely requested and are hardly ever actually executed to check that they produce the results advertised in the article. ReScience is a peer-reviewed journal that targets computational research and encourages the explicit replication of already published research, promoting new and open-source implementations in order to ensure that the original research can be replicated from its description. To achieve this goal, the whole publishing chain is radically different from other traditional scientific journals. Background: There is a significant gap in empirical evidence on the menstrual hygiene management (MHM) challenges faced by adolescent girls and women in emergency contexts, and on appropriate humanitarian response approaches to meet their needs in diverse emergency contexts. To begin filling the gap in the evidence, we conducted a study in two diverse contexts (Myanmar and Lebanon), exploring the MHM barriers facing girls and women, and the various relevant sectoral responses being conducted (e.g. water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), Protection, Health, Education and Camp Management)., Methods: Two qualitative assessments were conducted: one in camps for internally displaced populations in Myanmar, and one with refugees living in informal settlements and host communities in Lebanon. Key informant interviews were conducted with emergency response staff in both sites, and focus group discussion and participatory mapping activities conducted with adolescent girls and women., Results: Key findings included that there was insufficient access to safe and private facilities for MHM coupled with displacement induced shifts in menstrual practices by girls and women. Among staff, there was a narrow interpretation of what an MHM response includes, with a focus on supplies; significant interest in understanding what an improved MHM response would include and acknowledgement of limited existing MHM guidance across various sectors; and insufficient consultation with beneficiaries, related to discomfort asking about menstruation, and limited coordination between sectors., Conclusions: There is a significant need for improved guidance across all relevant sectors for improving MHM response in emergency context, along with increased evidence on effective approaches for integrating MHM into existing responses.

Background: The aim of this paper is to explore women's perceptions of the causes of intimate partner violence (IPV) in West Africa, and the ways in which they understand these causes to interact with the experiences of war., Methods: The study was conducted in two locations in Sierra Leone and two in Liberia, using focus group discussions (N groups =14) and individual interviews (N = 20)., Results: Women perceive the causes of IPV to be linked with other difficulties faced by women in these settings, including their financial dependence on men, traditional gender expectations and social changes that took place during and after the wars in those countries. According to respondents, the wars increased the use of violence by some men, as violence became for them a normal way of responding to frustrations and challenges. However, the war also resulted in women becoming economically active, which was said by some to have decreased IPV, as the pressure on men to provide for their families reduced. Economic independence, together with services provided by NGOs, also gave women the option of leaving a violent relationship., Conclusions: IPV was found to be a significant problem for women in Sierra Leone and Liberia. The interactions between war experiences and financial and cultural issues are multi-faceted and not uniformly positive or negative.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are the major cause of nosocomial infections. Methicillin-resistant strains are particularly important because they narrow therapeutic options. Detecting methicillin resistance among CNS has been a challenge for years. The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of an agar screening test (0.6 and 4 microg oxacillin ml(-1)), disc diffusion and the automated MicroScan system to characterize methicillin resistance among CNS. One hundred and seventy five strains were analysed: 41.1 % Staphylococcus epidermidis and 59.9 % other species; 69.1 % were mecA-positive. The results showed that the methods have optimal correlation with the detection of mecA gene for S. epidermidis, Staphylococcus hominis and Staphylococcus haemolyticus. However, accuracy of the tests is impaired when less common species are analysed. The only 100 % accurate test was agar screening with 4 microg oxacillin ml(-1).

A retrospective review of paracoccidioidomycosis cases seen between January 1966 to January 1997 revealled 27 of the 627 cases occurred in women (male to female ratio 27.3:1). Data for 23 of these 27 cases demonstrated the protective effect of female hormones.

Although early age is an important risk factor for the occurrence of acute disseminated histoplasmosis in non immunosuppressed infants, cases of this condition have been rarely reported, even in highly endemic areas. This is a reason to add a new case, the first one diagnosed in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and, also, to review and comment on the Brazilian literature of histoplasmosis in patients under three years of age.

Two cases of Chronic Pulmonary Histoplasmosis are reported and other eleven cases, collected from Brazilian literature, are commented. After being clinically cured, one of our patients presented an Aspergillus fungus ball inside a cavitation in the wall of which H. capsulatum was disclosed. Comments are also done on the diagnosis of the mycosis.
