1. Towards Long-Range 3D Object Detection for Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract

3D object detection at long range is crucial for ensuring the safety and efficiency of self driving vehicles, allowing them to accurately perceive and react to objects, obstacles, and potential hazards from a distance. But most current state of the art LiDAR based methods are range limited due to sparsity at long range, which generates a form of domain gap between points closer to and farther away from the ego vehicle. Another related problem is the label imbalance for faraway objects, which inhibits the performance of Deep Neural Networks at long range. To address the above limitations, we investigate two ways to improve long range performance of current LiDAR based 3D detectors. First, we combine two 3D detection networks, referred to as range experts, one specializing at near to mid range objects, and one at long range 3D detection. To train a detector at long range under a scarce label regime, we further weigh the loss according to the labelled point's distance from ego vehicle. Second, we augment LiDAR scans with virtual points generated using Multimodal Virtual Points (MVP), a readily available image-based depth completion algorithm. Our experiments on the long range Argoverse2 (AV2) dataset indicate that MVP is more effective in improving long range performance, while maintaining a straightforward implementation. Abstract

Ciberia Project has emerged around the creation of Ciberia, a digital archive dedicated to digital literature in Spanish, with the purpose of making its contents more widely shared and fostering community building around digital literature. This project intends to function as a platform for a community interested and/or specialized in new creative forms of literary publishing, using the Ciberia database as the confluence point and origin of collective interaction, creation and reflection on digital literature and its ramifications in the field of literary publishing. This paper provides a description of the digital library Ciberia, and its spin-off, the web platform Ciberia Project, offering a detailed account of their structure and potentialities.

Abstract

Crop classification via deep learning on ground imagery can deliver timely and accurate crop-specific information to various stakeholders. Dedicated ground-based image acquisition exercises can help to collect data in data scarce regions, improve control on timing of collection, or when study areas are to small to monitor via satellite. Automatic labelling is essential when collecting large volumes of data. One such data collection is the EU's Land Use Cover Area frame Survey (LUCAS), and in particular, the recently published LUCAS Cover photos database. The aim of this paper is to select and publish a subset of LUCAS Cover photos for 12 mature major crops across the EU, to deploy, benchmark, and identify the best configuration of Mobile-net for the classification task, to showcase the possibility of using entropy-based metrics for post-processing of results, and finally to show the applications and limitations of the model in a practical and policy relevant context. In particular, the usefulness of automatically identifying crops on geo-tagged photos is illustrated in the context of the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. The work has produced a dataset of 169,460 images of mature crops for the 12 classes, out of which 15,876 were manually selected as representing a clean sample without any foreign objects or unfavorable conditions. The best performing model achieved a Macro F1 (M-F1) of 0.75 on an imbalanced test dataset of 8,642 photos. Using metrics from information theory, namely - the Equivalence Reference Probability, resulted in achieving an increase of 6%. The most unfavorable conditions for taking such images, across all crop classes, were found to be too early or late in the season. The proposed methodology shows the possibility for using minimal auxiliary data, outside the images themselves, in order to achieve a M-F1 of 0.817 for labelling between 12 major European crops.

Abstract

Higgs boson pair production is traditionally considered to be of particular interest for a measurement of the trilinear Higgs self-coupling. Yet it can offer insights into other couplings as well, since - in an effective field theory (EFT) parameterisation of potential new physics - both the production cross section and kinematical properties of the Higgs boson pair depend on various other Wilson coefficients of EFT operators. This note summarises the ongoing efforts related to the development of EFT tools for Higgs boson pair production in gluon fusion, and provides recommendations for the use of distinct EFT parameterisations in the Higgs boson pair production process. This document also outlines where further efforts are needed and provides a detailed analysis of theoretical uncertainties. Additionally, benchmark scenarios are updated. We also re-derive a parameterisation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in terms of the EFT Wilson coefficients both for the total cross section and the distribution in the invariant mass of the Higgs boson pair, providing for the first time also the covariance matrix. Abstract

Recent text-to-image generative models have exhibited remarkable abilities in generating high-fidelity and photo-realistic images. However, despite the visually impressive results, these models often struggle to preserve plausible human structure in the generations. Due to this reason, while generative models have shown promising results in aiding downstream image recognition tasks by generating large volumes of synthetic data, they are not suitable for improving downstream human pose perception and understanding. In this work, we propose a Diffusion model with Human Pose Correction (Diffusion-HPC), a text-conditioned method that generates photo-realistic images with plausible posed humans by injecting prior knowledge about human body structure. Our generated images are accompanied by 3D meshes that serve as ground truths for improving Human Mesh Recovery tasks, where a shortage of 3D training data has long been an issue. Furthermore, we show that Diffusion-HPC effectively improves the realism of human generations under varying conditioning strategies.

Abstract

Background and aimsWe previously identified subsets of patients with NAFLD with different metabolic phenotypes. Here we align metabolomic signatures with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and genetic risk factors.Approach and resultsWe analyzed serum metabolome from 1154 individuals with biopsy-proven NAFLD, and from four mouse models of NAFLD with impaired VLDL-triglyceride (TG) secretion, and one with normal VLDL-TG secretion. We identified three metabolic subtypes: A (47%), B (27%), and C (26%). Subtype A phenocopied the metabolome of mice with impaired VLDL-TG secretion; subtype C phenocopied the metabolome of mice with normal VLDL-TG; and subtype B showed an intermediate signature. The percent of patients with NASH and fibrosis was comparable among subtypes, although subtypes B and C exhibited higher liver enzymes. Serum VLDL-TG levels and secretion rate were lower among subtype A compared with subtypes B and C. Subtype A VLDL-TG and VLDL-apolipoprotein B concentrations were independent of steatosis, whereas subtypes B and C showed an association with these parameters. Serum TG, cholesterol, VLDL, small dense LDL5,6 , and remnant lipoprotein cholesterol were lower among subtype A compared with subtypes B and C. The 10-year high risk of CVD, measured with the Framingham risk score, and the frequency of patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 NAFLD risk allele were lower in subtype A.ConclusionsMetabolomic signatures identify three NAFLD subgroups, independent of histological disease severity. These signatures align with known CVD and genetic risk factors, with subtype A exhibiting a lower CVD risk profile. This may account for the variation in hepatic versus cardiovascular outcomes, offering clinically relevant risk stratification.

10. Skyline variations allow estimating distance to trees on landscape photos using semantic segmentation

Abstract

Approximate distance estimation can be used to determine fundamental landscape properties including complexity and openness. We show that variations in the skyline of landscape photos can be used to estimate distances to trees on the horizon. A methodology based on the variations of the skyline has been developed and used to investigate potential relationships with the distance to skyline objects. The skyline signal, defined by the skyline height expressed in pixels, was extracted for several Land Use/Cover Area frame Survey (LUCAS) landscape photos. Photos were semantically segmented with DeepLabV3+ trained with the Common Objects in Context (COCO) dataset. This provided pixel-level classification of the objects forming the skyline. A Conditional Random Fields (CRF) algorithm was also applied to increase the details of the skyline signal. Three metrics, able to capture the skyline signal variations, were then considered for the analysis. These metrics shows a functional relationship with distance for the class of trees, whose contours have a fractal nature. In particular, regression analysis was performed against 475 ortho-photo based distance measurements, and, in the best case, a R2 score equal to 0.47 was achieved. This is an encouraging result which shows the potential of skyline variation metrics for inferring distance related information.

13. Monitoring crop phenology with street-level imagery using computer vision

Abstract

Street-level imagery holds a significant potential to scale-up in-situ data collection. This is enabled by combining the use of cheap high quality cameras with recent advances in deep learning compute solutions to derive relevant thematic information. We present a framework to collect and extract crop type and phenological information from street level imagery using computer vision. During the 2018 growing season, high definition pictures were captured with side-looking action cameras in the Flevoland province of the Netherlands. Each month from March to October, a fixed 200-km route was surveyed collecting one picture per second resulting in a total of 400,000 geo-tagged pictures. At 220 specific parcel locations detailed on the spot crop phenology observations were recorded for 17 crop types. Furthermore, the time span included specific pre-emergence parcel stages, such as differently cultivated bare soil for spring and summer crops as well as post-harvest cultivation practices, e.g. green manuring and catch crops. Classification was done using TensorFlow with a well-known image recognition model, based on transfer learning with convolutional neural networks (MobileNet). A hypertuning methodology was developed to obtain the best performing model among 160 models. This best model was applied on an independent inference set discriminating crop type with a Macro F1 score of 88.1% and main phenological stage at 86.9% at the parcel level. Potential and caveats of the approach along with practical considerations for implementation and improvement are discussed. Las tecnologías de Internet permiten el uso de sistemas de software distribuido para el acceso en forma remota a laboratorios físicos y virtuales, para llevar a cabo actividades de investigación experimental a distancia. A partir de los marcos teóricos que definen los estructurantes de los laboratorios, los implementadores de laboratorios de acceso remoto deben diseñar y desarrollar arquitecturas de servicios que permitan un acceso flexible y controlado. Este trabajo define una infraestructura para la implementación de aplicaciones para el acceso remoto a laboratorios físicos y virtuales y para la gestión de los mismos. Se presentan conceptos que permiten extender la modalidad tradicional de conexión con un dispositivo, para llevar adelante actividades prácticas de laboratorio colaborativas y concurrentes.

Abstract

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center has enabled widespread study of nanoscale nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at low magnetic fields. NMR spectroscopy at high magnetic fields significantly improves the technique's spectral resolution, enabling clear identification of closely related chemical species. However, NV-detected NMR is typically performed using AC sensing through electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM), a hyperfine spectroscopic technique that is not feasible at high magnetic fields. Within this paper, we have explored an NV-detected NMR technique for applications of high field NMR. We have demonstrated optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) with the NV Larmor frequency of 230 GHz at 8.3 Tesla, corresponding to a proton NMR frequency of 350 MHz. We also demonstrated the first measurement of electron-electron double resonance detected NMR (EDNMR) using the NV center and successfully detected $^{13}C$ nuclear bath spins. The described technique is limited by the longitudinal relaxation time ($T_1$), not the transverse relaxation time ($T_2$). Future applications of the method to perform nanoscale NMR of external spins at 8.3 T and even higher magnetic fields are also discussed., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The "MIcro-Surgical Anastomose Workflow recognition on training sessions" (MISAW) challenge provided a data set of 27 sequences of micro-surgical anastomosis on artificial blood vessels. This data set was composed of videos, kinematics, and workflow annotations described at three different granularity levels: phase, step, and activity. The participants were given the option to use kinematic data and videos to develop workflow recognition models. Four tasks were proposed to the participants: three of them were related to the recognition of surgical workflow at three different granularity levels, while the last one addressed the recognition of all granularity levels in the same model. One ranking was made for each task. We used the average application-dependent balanced accuracy (AD-Accuracy) as the evaluation metric. This takes unbalanced classes into account and it is more clinically relevant than a frame-by-frame score. Six teams, including a non-competing team, participated in at least one task. All models employed deep learning models, such as CNN or RNN. The best models achieved more than 95% AD-Accuracy for phase recognition, 80% for step recognition, 60% for activity recognition, and 75% for all granularity levels. For high levels of granularity (i.e., phases and steps), the best models had a recognition rate that may be sufficient for applications such as prediction of remaining surgical time or resource management. However, for activities, the recognition rate was still low for applications that can be employed clinically. 28. Weighing up the Effects of Working Memory and Cognitive Abilities in CLIL Learning

Abstract

In an era of globalization, multilingualism is no longer the exception but the rule. To fully promote the communicative and functional development of multilingual learners, different educational programs at school have been implemented in the past few years. The study presented here is a contribution in this direction, by investigating the linguistic development in a second foreign language (L3 English) of students who were exposed to asymmetric input exposure in this and another non-native language. This other language was the L2 (German), which the learners (n= 50, 11-13 years old) were studying in a CLIL context together with the native languages of the participants (Spanish and Catalan). Within such a context, the purpose of the study is two-fold. On the one hand, it attempts to investigate the linguistic attainment in the L3, measured in terms of various dimensions of writing performance in a composition task, namely, fluency, accuracy, structural complexity and lexical complexity. On the other hand, the study aimed at exploring the contribution of various components of working memory (short-term memory and attention switching) to performance in these linguistic dimensions. The results suggest that individual differences in storage capacity and in capability for attention and task switching had an effect on the accuracy of the learners' performance, and to a lesser extent, also lexical complexity. Moreover, it was found that in general, attentional abilities had a greater impact than memory. These results are discussed in light of previous findings, while proposing directions for further investigation in the field.

Scaling information bits to ever smaller dimensions is a dominant drive for information technology (IT). Nanostructured phase change material emerges as a key player in the current green-IT endeavor with low power consumption, functional modularity and promising scalability. In this work, we present the demonstration of microwave AC voltage induced phase change phenomenon at 3 GHz in single Sb$_2$Te$_3$ nanowires. The resistance change by a total of 6 - 7 orders of magnitude is evidenced by a transition from the crystalline metallic to the amorphous semiconducting phase, which is cross-examined by temperature dependent transport measurement and high-resolution electron microscopy analysis. Abstract

We study the task of semantic segmentation of surgical instruments in robotic-assisted surgery scenes. We propose the Instance-based Surgical Instrument Segmentation Network (ISINet), a method that addresses this task from an instance-based segmentation perspective. Our method includes a temporal consistency module that takes into account the previously overlooked and inherent temporal information of the problem. We validate our approach on the existing benchmark for the task, the Endoscopic Vision 2017 Robotic Instrument Segmentation Dataset, and on the 2018 version of the dataset, whose annotations we extended for the fine-grained version of instrument segmentation. Abstract

Accurately characterizing land surface changes with Earth Observation requires geo-localized ground truth. In the European Union (EU), a tri-annual surveyed sample of land cover and land use has been collected since 2006 under the Land Use/Cover Area frame Survey (LUCAS). A total of 1,351,293 observations at 651,780 unique locations for 117 variables along with 5.4 million photos were collected during five LUCAS surveys. Until now, these data have never been harmonised into one database, limiting full exploitation of the information. This paper describes the LUCAS point sampling/surveying methodology, including collection of standard variables such as land cover, environmental parameters, and full resolution landscape and point photos, and then describes the harmonisation process. The resulting harmonised database is the most comprehensive in-situ dataset on land cover and use in the EU. The database is valuable for geo-spatial and statistical analysis of land use and land cover change. Furthermore, its potential to provide multi-temporal in-situ data will be enhanced by recent computational advances such as deep learning.

Abstract

Intraoperative tracking of laparoscopic instruments is often a prerequisite for computer and robotic-assisted interventions. While numerous methods for detecting, segmenting and tracking of medical instruments based on endoscopic video images have been proposed in the literature, key limitations remain to be addressed: Firstly, robustness, that is, the reliable performance of state-of-the-art methods when run on challenging images (e.g. in the presence of blood, smoke or motion artifacts). Secondly, generalization; algorithms trained for a specific intervention in a specific hospital should generalize to other interventions or institutions. In an effort to promote solutions for these limitations, we organized the Robust Medical Instrument Segmentation (ROBUST-MIS) challenge as an international benchmarking competition with a specific focus on the robustness and generalization capabilities of algorithms. For the first time in the field of endoscopic image processing, our challenge included a task on binary segmentation and also addressed multi-instance detection and segmentation. The challenge was based on a surgical data set comprising 10,040 annotated images acquired from a total of 30 surgical procedures from three different types of surgery. The validation of the competing methods for the three tasks (binary segmentation, multi-instance detection and multi-instance segmentation) was performed in three different stages with an increasing domain gap between the training and the test data. The results confirm the initial hypothesis, namely that algorithm performance degrades with an increasing domain gap. Abstract

In its archives, the Real Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi (RACBA) preserves the plans for a wooden bridge erected in 1802 for the visit of Carlos IV and Maria Luisa de Parma to Barcelona. It was built for the purpose of bridging the Royal Palace and the Customs Palace, which were the residences that the authorities assigned to the Spanish and the Neapolitan monarchs during their stay in the city, through an elevated structure. In the course of time, it was dismantled and sold piece by piece, but its ephemeral nature did not eliminate its practical utility and its decoration in the neoclassical style, which was a popular style in Catalonia at the time.

Abstract

The Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut (DGFI) has been involved in the research activities of the Latin American Reference Frame SIRGAS since its establishment in 1993. DGFI coordinated the SIRGAS Global Positioning System campaigns of 1995 and 2000 and acted as an analysis centre of both campaigns contributing to the first two SIRGAS realisations known as SIRGAS95 and SIRGAS2000. In 1996, DGFI established the Regional Network Associate Analysis Centre for SIRGAS of the International GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Service (IGS RNAAC SIRGAS) and took on responsibility for processing the SIRGAS continuously operating stations and generating weekly position solutions. Later followed the determination of cumulative (multi-year) solutions, consisting of station positions and constant velocities, providing accurate solutions for the SIRGAS reference frame. DGFI was integrated into the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in 2015, becoming DGFI–TUM, and based on the SIRGAS operational analyses, it continues investigating strategies to guarantee the reliability of the reference frame through time. This includes the estimation of the reference frame kinematics, evaluation, modelling, and reduction of seismic and post-seismic deformations on the reference frame, and modelling crustal kinematics in the SIRGAS region by continuous velocity models. This article summarises analysis strategies and science data products developed by DGFI–TUM as a SIRGAS analysis centre and as the IGS RNAAC SIRGAS. Special care is given to the determination of the most recent SIRGAS reference frame solution called SIRGAS2022, which is based on the second SIRGAS reprocessing campaign performed by DGFI–TUM to obtain homogeneously computed SIRGAS daily and weekly station position solutions referring to the IGS reference frame IGS14/IGb14 since January 2000.

Abstract

This open access volume contains a selection of papers presented at three different IAG Symposia held in 2022: GGHS2022 – Gravity, Geoid, and Height Systems 2022, Austin, TX, United States of America, September 12 – 14, 2022; IAG Commission 4 – Positioning and Applications, Potsdam, Germany, September 5 – 8, 2022; and REFAG2022 – Reference Frames for Applications in Geosciences, Thessaloniki, Greece, October 17 – 20, 2022. Two of these three conferences were planned for 2020 or 2021, but had to be postponed due to the COVID19 pandemic. They therefore became an important opportunity for the global geodesy community to rebuild professional networks and to resume face-to-face interaction. Scientists from around the world were delighted to once again gather together to present their research progress and findings, and discuss scientific issues.

Abstract

This open access volume contains the proceedings of the X Hotine-Marussi Symposium on Mathematical Geodesy which was held from 13 to 17 June 2022 at the Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy. Since 2006 the series of the Hotine-Marussi Symposia has been under the responsibility of the Inter-Commission Committee on Theory (ICCT) within the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). The ICCT organized the last five Hotine-Marussi Symposia held in Wuhan (2006), Rome (2009, 2013 and 2018), and Milan (2022). The overall goal of the ICCT and Hotine-Marussi Symposia has always been to advance geodetic theory which is indeed documented by the 22 research articles published in these proceedings. The jubilee X Hotine-Marussi Symposium was organized in 10 topical sessions covering all parts of geodetic theory including reference frames, gravity field modelling, adjustment theory, height systems, time series analysis, or advanced numerical methods. In total, 60 participants attended the Symposium who delivered 62 oral and 18 poster presentations. During a special session, five invited speakers discussed two basic concepts of physical geodesy – geoid and quasigeoid.
