Diesel engines are known for their excellent efficiency and are therefore used in a variety of applications. However, they are also one of the main sources of hazardous emissions such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and smoke. Water-in-Diesel Emulsion (WiDE) is an alternative fuel that can possibly reduce some of the pollutant emissions without compromising engine performance. The surfactant formulation for WiDE usually follows the one used in water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions, where low hydrophilic–lipophilic balance (HLB) emulsifiers are preferred for better solubility in the diesel phase and stabilization at storage temperatures. However, by using a hydrophilic blend with a non-ionic surfactant, it is possible to develop an optimized formulation at higher fuel temperatures, which occur during an engine's operating condition, achieving possibly higher benefits. Across the different speeds, the results for the emulsion show 7.57% mean improvement in specific fuel consumption (SFC), 19.14% mean improvement in thermal efficiency (TE), 5.54% mean reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2), 20.50% mean reduction in nitric oxide (NO) and 75.19% mean reduction in smoke levels. Introduction: In a multilevel cervical laminoplasty operation for patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), a partial or complete C3 laminectomy may be performed at the upper level instead of a C3 plated laminoplasty. It is unknown whether C3 technique above the laminoplasty affects loss of cervical lordosis or range of motion. Methods: Patients undergoing multilevel laminoplasty of the cervical spine (C3–C6/C7) at a single institution were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into two cohorts based on surgical technique at C3: C3–C6/C7 plated laminoplasty ("C3 laminoplasty only", N = 61), C3 partial or complete laminectomy, plus C4–C6/C7 plated laminoplasty (N = 39). All patients had at least 1-year postoperative X-ray treatment. Results: Of 100 total patients, C3 laminoplasty and C3 laminectomy were equivalent in all demographic data, except for age (66.4 vs. 59.4 years, p = 0.012). None of the preoperative radiographic parameters differed between the C3 laminoplasty and C3 laminectomy cohorts: cervical lordosis (13.1° vs. 11.1°, p = 0.259), T1 slope (32.9° vs. 29.2°, p = 0.072), T1 slope–cervical lordosis (19.8° vs. 18.6°, p = 0.485), or cervical sagittal vertical axis (3.1 cm vs. 2.7 cm, p = 0.193). None of the postoperative radiographic parameters differed between the C3 laminoplasty and C3 laminectomy cohorts: cervical lordosis (9.4° vs. 11.2°, p = 0.369), T1 slope–cervical lordosis (21.7° vs. 18.1°, p = 0.126), to cervical sagittal vertical axis (3.3 cm vs. 3.6 cm, p = 0.479). In the total cohort, 31% had loss of cervical lordosis >5°. Loss of lordosis reached 5–10° (mild change) in 13% of patients and >10° (moderate change) in 18% of patients. C3 laminoplasty and C3 laminectomy cohorts did not differ with respect to no change (<5°: 65.6% vs. 74.3%, respectively), mild change (5–10°: 14.8% vs. 10.3%), and moderate change (>10°: 19.7% vs. 15.4%) in cervical lordosis, p = 0.644. When controlling for age, ordinal regression showed that surgical technique at C3 did not increase the odds of postoperative loss of cervical lordosis. C3 laminectomy versus C3 laminoplasty did not differ in the postoperative range of motion on cervical flexion–extension X-rays (23.9° vs. 21.7°, p = 0.451, N = 91). Conclusion: There was no difference in postoperative loss of cervical lordosis or postoperative range of motion in patients who underwent either C3–C6/C7 plated laminoplasty or C3 laminectomy plus C4–C6/C7 plated laminoplasty. Extracts obtained from plants have significantly contributed to the creation of new drugs due to their medicinal properties, which are provided by the presence of bioactive components. This has led to a growing interest from the pharmaceutical industry in using this type of extract for the creation of increasingly advanced medications. The main components sought are antibacterial agents from sustainable and renewable sources, whether of animal or vegetable origin or derived from other natural components. Tissues become a source of microbial proliferation, especially when in contact with the human body, which can cause serious diseases. In line with this, the goal of this research was to create an antibacterial Melon-de-São-Caetano (Momordica charantia) leaf microemulsion for application on material surfaces. This microemulsified system is an effective alternative for solubilizing functional agents, and being thermodynamically stable, it is efficient for long-term use. For this study, an extract of Momordica charantia leaves (EMC) was obtained, and microemulsions with different EMC concentrations (P1, P2, and P3) were produced. The extract and microemulsions were investigated using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, particle size, zeta potential, thermal stress, pH, electrical conductivity, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and antibacterial analysis (Staphylococcus aureus). In summary, the proposed objective was met, and EMC, SME, and the P2 and P3 microemulsions showed positive results against S. aureus, with the P3 microemulsified system being the most effective with a 12.5 mm inhibition halo. Rapid construction with an energy-efficient approach is a major challenge in the present construction industry. Cement, a carbon-intensive material, is mainly used in the construction industry and hence increases the sector's carbon footprint on the environment. The current review focuses on the study of 3D concrete printing (3DCP), in which cement is partially replaced with industrial byproducts such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), fly ash, and silica fume. Walling material is primarily targeted in 3DCP. There is a need to include energy efficiency to achieve a thermally comfortable environment. The life cycle assessment (LCA) of concrete is studied to discover the potential conflicts affecting the environment. The sand-to-binder ratio is pivotal in determining the performance of concrete. The content of the supplements is decided based on this factor. The rheological, physical, and mechanical properties of 3DCP are studied further and analysed. GGBS demonstrates better performance in the compressive and flexure strength of concrete. The usage of fly ash and silica fume has reduced the thermal conductivity of the material, whereas GGBS has increased it. An LCA study shows that 3DCP can be made sustainable with the use of these supplementary cementitious materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The global concrete and construction industry's growth has led to a shift in priorities, with a greater emphasis placed on sustainability. Hence, with technological advances, the concrete industry seeks additional cementitious materials to produce value-added products. By emphasizing the financial, ecological, and technological benefits of using fly ash as a partial cement replacement, the study constructed a framework which integrates the economic, environmental, and social pillars of sustainability through value engineering. Experimental results from 42 previous studies are analyzed and presented to underline the unique characteristics of fly ash concrete alternatives across five criteria (replacement, strength gain, compressive strength, slump, and permeability), showing how they differ from conventional concrete, and how they can be used to implement sustainable practices with positive financial outcomes. This study showed that the alternatives' value gradually increases up to two times at 50% cement replacement. On the other hand, while the construction cost gradually increased to a peak of 19.69%, the life cycle cost went down by 41.45% at the same percentage. Thus, customers can emphasize the superiority of eco-friendly concrete while also highlighting the economic benefits, making it a more competitive option for them and expanding its market. Sildenafil citrate is a drug used throughout the world primarily to treat erectile dysfunction. Several problems with the commercially available product decrease its efficacy, such as limited solubility, delayed onset of action, and low bioavailability with a large variability in the absorption profile. This study aimed to develop an optimized self-nanoemulsifying lyophilized tablet for the drug to conquer the foresaid problems. Sildenafil solubility in various surfactants, oils, and cosurfactants was attempted. An optimized formulation of a loaded self-nanoemulsion with a small droplet size was developed by applying a special cubic model of the mixture design. Sixteen formulations were prepared and characterized for droplet size. On the basis of solubility studies, a clove oil/oleic acid mixture, polysorbate 20 (Tween 20), and propylene glycol were selected as the proposed oil, surfactant, and cosurfactant, respectively. On the basis of desirability, an optimized sildenafil citrate-loaded self-nanoemulsifying delivery system containing 10% of the oil mixture, 60% of the surfactant, and 30% of the cosurfactant had a droplet size of 65 nm. Subsequently, the tablet form was fabricated with optimum ratios of 0.4% fumed silica, 0.1% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and 0.4% sodium starch glycolate. This formula showed satisfactory results in both disintegration and dissolution studies. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies indicated a higher bioavailability (1.44 times) and rapid absorption profile for the study's tablets compared with commercially available tablets. In conclusion, highly bioavailable oral lyophilized flash tablets of sildenafil were successfully prepared. They will be a good alternative to the conventional solid-dosage form.
