Abstract

Recent progress in the development of patterned magnetic recording media is presented, focusing on the results of patterned media fabricated by a self-assembled mask process. Several issues such as fabrication process, flyability, and signal processing have been discussed so far. However, recent progress seems to resolve these problems. A fabrication process using nano-imprint lithography is a possible solution in terms of productivity. Good results for flyability have been reported for discrete track recording media. Certain advantages with respect to signal processing have been reported. Although problems remain to be resolved, patterned media is expected to be commercialized following the introduction of the discrete track media, as a high density perpendicular magnetic recording media. Abstract

Boron-doped diamond (BDD) films (boron content: 17,000 ppm) were grown by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition. To investigate whether BDD films are suitable anode materials in the chromium electroplating process, the oxidation behavior from Cr3+ to Cr6+ was investigated on a BDD electrode. The current efficiency of the BDD electrode for Cr3+ oxidation was similar to that of lead alloy anode, the conventional anode in chromium electroplating processes. In strong acid solution (pH = −0.39), Cr3+ ions were readily oxidized on the BDD and lead alloy electrodes but were not oxidized on platinum and iridium oxide electrodes. Furthermore, during electrolysis for 50 h using the BDD anode in a hexavalent chromium electroplating bath, the Cr3+ ion concentration was maintained below 1.5 g/L. According to these results, the BDD anode is a feasible alternative to lead alloy in hexavalent chromium electroplating.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the antiemetic efficacy of a 5-hydroxytryptamine-3 receptor antagonist (5-HT3RA), ondansetron, in patients with malignant lymphoma receiving multi-day cisplatin-based combination chemotherapy. We conducted a single-institution retrospective analysis of patients receiving the first course of an ESHAP (etoposide, cisplatin, methylprednisolone, cytarabine) regimen including 4-day continuous infusion of cisplatin (25 mg/m2/day). All patients received ondansetron 4 mg intravenously during 5-day administration of ESHAP. The primary endpoint was complete response (CR) for emesis, which was defined as absence of both emesis and rescue medications. Total control (TC) was defined as an absence of emetic episodes, including nausea and emesis, and complete protection (CP) was defined as an absence of emesis with addition of rescue antiemetics. Nausea and vomiting were assessed and graded daily by medical staff. Eighty-two patients were analyzed. Nausea and vomiting were generally well controlled, with the CR rates of emesis being 79% in the overall phase, 82% in the early phase (days 1–6), and 89% in the delayed phase (days 7–10). TC and CP were achieved in 51 patients (62%) and 77 patients (94%) in the overall phase. Most of the chemotherapy regimens for lymphoid malignancies include high-dose corticosteroid which may be also effective as antiemetics. Although NK1 receptor antagonist (NK1RA) is generally recommended for cisplatin-containing chemotherapy, it can interact with variety drugs. Although NK1RA is generally recommended for cisplatin-containing regimen, our results suggest that ondansetron effectively controlled emesis in patients receiving ESHAP therapy which includes high-dose corticosteroid. Abstract

Circumferential magnetic patterned media were prepared on a 2.5-inch-diameter glass plate and on a 3-in-diameter silicon plate. A Ni master disk possessing spiral patterns with 60-250-nm-width lands and a 400-nm-width groove was pressed into a resist film on a CoPt or CoCrPt film to transfer the spiral patterns. A dibiock copolymer solution was cast into the obtained grooves and then annealed to prepare self-assembling dot structures aligned along the grooves. According to the dot patterns, the underlying magnetic films were patterned by ion milling to yield patterned media with a 40-nm diameter. Coercive forces and squareness ratios of the patterned media increased compared to those of the continuous media, probably due to the decrement of a demagnetizing field. Single magnetic domains with an almost perpendicular orientation were confirmed in each magnetic dot. Abstract

Ultrananocrystalline diamond/amorphous carbon composite films, wherein a larger number of diamond grains with diameters of less than 10 nm are embedded in an amorphous carbon matrix, were deposited on cemented carbide (WC-6wt.% Co) substrates by using coaxial arc plasma deposition at different repetition rates and deposition temperatures. The hardness and Young’s modulus were measured by nanoindentation. The film deposited at a repetition rate of 1 Hz and room temperature exhibited the maximum hardness of 51 GPa and modulus of 520 GPa. This implies that catalytic effects of Co in the WC-Co substrates, which induce the graphitization of the films, can be suppressed by the low deposition temperature, since the catalytic effects are enhanced with increasing temperature.

Abstract

Background: Late-onset noninfectious pulmonary complications (LONIPCs), which occur more than 3 months after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), are major causes of morbidity and mortality after transplantation. Among LONIPCs, we occasionally treat patients with late-onset severe restrictive lung defect after HSCT; however, its clinical features have not been fully elucidated.Methods: A retrospective chart review of a single center on cases of late-onset severe restrictive lung defect after HSCT was performed. Among 453 patients who survived longer than 100 days after allogeneic HSCT with evaluable spirometry data, 12 patients (2.6%) developed late-onset severe restrictive lung defect (i.e., vital capacity percent of predicted less than 60%).Results: Median duration from transplantation to diagnosis of late-onset severe restrictive lung defect cases was 44.5 months. Major computed tomography (CT) finding was pleuroparenchymal thickening with volume loss, an evidence of fibrosis, predominantly in upper lobes (n = 7), which was consistent with pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis. The remaining patients showed unclassifiable interstitial pneumonia pattern (n = 2) and airway-predominant pattern (n = 3). The diffusing capacity for carbon oxide tended to decrease, while the residual volume/total lung capacity ratio tended to increase after HSCT. Of 12 patients, 8 patients died and the median month from diagnosis to death was 33.5 months. Seven patients died of pulmonary or systemic infection, and one patient died due to relapse of the primary disease.Conclusion: Severe restrictive lung defect could develop in selected cases in the late-phase after HSCT and could be a unique clinical entity with specific radiographical findings.
