We propose an efficient method to perform on-shell matching calculations in effective field theories. The standard off-shell approach to matching requires the use of a Green's basis that includes redundant and evanescent operators. The reduction of such a basis to a physical one is often highly non-trivial, difficult to automate and error prone. Our proposal is based on a numerical solution of the corresponding on-shell matching equations, which automatically implements in a trivial way the delicate cancellation between the non-local terms in the full theory and those in the effective one. The use of rational on-shell kinematics ensures an exact analytic solution despite the numerical procedure. In this way we only need a physical basis to perform the matching. Our procedure can be used to reduce any Green's basis to an arbitrary physical one, or to translate between physical bases; to renormalize arbitrary effective Lagrangians, directly in terms of a physical basis; and to perform finite matching, including evanescent contributions, as we discuss with explicit examples., Comment: 19 pages + appendices, 3 figures, ancillary files

Surface stiffnesses engender steady patterns of Faraday waves (FWs), so called hydrodynamic crystals as correspond to ordered wave lattices made of discrete subharmonics under monochromatic driving. Mastering rules are both inertia-imposed parametric resonance for frequency-halving together with rigidity-driven nonlinearity for wavefield self-focusing. They harness the discretization needed for coherent FW-packets to localize in space and time. Collective lattice excitations are observed as dispersionless propagating dislocations that lead periodic modulations arising from explicit symmetry breaking. In a field theory perspective, a halving genesis for the collective distorting modes is revealed as the natural pathway for hydrodynamic crystal melting.

Red blood cells possess unique biomechanical ability to squeeze through capillaries smaller than their size to enable gas and ion exchange. A key signature of their active biomechanics is the out-of-equilibrium fluctuation of the plasma membrane, also known as flickering motion. This active flickering is driven by motor proteins that connect the forces between the spectrin skeleton and the lipid bilayer. However, studying flickering motions in living red blood cells is challenging without altering their physical properties. Here, we implemented a holographic optical tweezer that sculpted a laser beam to create a force field distributed directly along the membrane equatorial contour. We show heterogeneous membrane flickering activity driven by membrane kickers in free-standing cells. Then we inhibited the active kickers by optical forces under minimal invasion, thus benchmarking the active motion against thermal fluctuations. Our work paves the way for optical control of biophysical forces, providing touchless strategies for mechanotransduction in living cells., Comment: 6 figures

Neutrino experiments, in the next years, aim to determine with precision all the six parameters of the three-neutrino standard paradigm. The complete success of the experimental program is, nevertheless, attached to the non-existence (or at least smallness) of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI). In this work, anticipating the data taken from long-baseline neutrino experiments, we map all the weakly coupled theories that could induce sizable NSI, with the potential to be determined in these experiments, in particular DUNE. Once present constraints from other experiments are taken into account, in particular charged-lepton flavor violation, we find that only models containing leptoquarks (scalar or vector) and/or neutral isosinglet vector bosons are viable. We provide the explicit matching formulas connecting weakly coupled models and NSI, both in propagation and production. Departing from the weakly coupled completion with masses at TeV scale, we also provide a global fit on all NSI for DUNE, finding that NSI smaller than $10^{-2}$ cannot be probed even in the best-case scenario., Comment: Version accepted for publication at JHEP. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10~TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This note gives an overview of the tools for the precision matching of ultraviolet theories to the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) at the tree level and one loop. Several semi- and fully automated codes are presented, as well as some supplementary codes for the basis conversion and the subsequent running and matching at low energies. In the path towards a muon collider with center of mass energy of 10 TeV or more, a stage at 3 TeV emerges as an appealing option. Reviewing the physics potential of such muon collider is the main purpose of this document. In order to outline the progression of the physics performances across the stages, a few sensitivity projections for higher energy are also presented. There are many opportunities for probing new physics at a 3 TeV muon collider. Some of them are in common with the extensively documented physics case of the CLIC 3 TeV energy stage, and include measuring the Higgs trilinear coupling and testing the possible composite nature of the Higgs boson and of the top quark at the 20 TeV scale. Other opportunities are unique of a 3 TeV muon collider, and stem from the fact that muons are collided rather than electrons. We introduce matchmakereft, a fully automated tool to compute the tree-level and one-loop matching of arbitrary models onto arbitrary effective theories. Matchmakereft performs an off-shell matching, using diagrammatic methods and the background field method when gauge theories are involved. The large redundancy inherent to the off-shell matching together with explicit gauge invariance offers a significant number of non-trivial checks of the results provided. These results are given in the physical basis but several intermediate results, including the matching in the Green basis before and after canonical normalization, are given for flexibility and the possibility of further cross-checks. As a non-trivial example we provide the complete matching in the Warsaw basis up to one loop of an extension of the Standard Model with a charge -1 vector-like lepton singlet. Matchmakereft has been built with generality, flexibility and efficiency in mind. These ingredients allow matchmakereft to have many applications beyond the matching between models and effective theories. Some of these applications include the one-loop renormalization of arbitrary theories (including the calculation of the one-loop renormalization group equations for arbitrary theories); the translation between different Green bases for a fixed effective theory or the check of (off-shell) linear independence of the operators in an effective theory. Focusing on four-Higgs interactions, we analyse the robustness of tree-level-derived positivity bounds on Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) operators under quantum corrections. Among other results, we demonstrate that: (i) Even in the simplest extensions of the Standard Model, e.g. with one new scalar singlet or with a neutral triplet, some positivity bounds are strictly violated; (ii) the mixing of the dimension-eight operators under renormalisation, which we compute here for the first time, can drive them out of their positivity region; (iii) the running of the dimension-eight interactions triggered by solely dimension-six terms respects the positivity bounds. Our results suggest, on one hand, that departures from positivity within the SMEFT, if ever found in the data, do not necessarily imply the breaking of unitarity or causality, nor the presence of new light degrees of freedom. On the other hand, they lead to strong constraints on the form of certain anomalous dimensions., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We describe current and future hadron collider limits on new vector-like leptons with exotic decays. We consider the possibility that, besides standard decays, the new leptons can also decay into a Standard Model charged lepton and a stable particle like a dark photon. To increase their applicability, our results are given in terms of arbitrary branching ratios in the different decay channels. In the case that the dark photon is stable at cosmological scales we discuss the interplay between the dark photon and the vector-like lepton in generating the observed dark matter relic abundance and the complementarity of collider searches and dark matter phenomenology., Comment: 31 pages, 21 figures, 3 tables

We compute the one-loop renormalisation group running of the bosonic Standard Model effective operators to order $v^4/\Lambda^4$, with $v\sim 246$ GeV being the electroweak scale and $\Lambda$ the unknown new physics threshold. We concentrate on the effects triggered by pairs of the leading dimension-six interactions, namely those that can arise at tree level in weakly-coupled ultraviolet completions of the Standard Model. We highlight some interesting consequences, including the interplay between positivity bounds and the form of the anomalous dimensions; the non renormalisation of the $S$ and $U$ parameters; or the importance of radiative corrections to the Higgs potential for the electroweak phase transition. As a byproduct of this work, we provide a complete Green basis of operators involving only the Higgs and derivatives at dimension-eight, comprising 13 redundant interactions., Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure, 5 tables. v3: Minor corrections. We present an effective field theory describing the relevant interactions of the Standard Model with an electrically neutral particle that can account for the dark matter in the Universe. The possible mediators of these interactions are assumed to be heavy. The dark matter candidates that we consider have spin 0, 1/2 or 1, belong to an electroweak multiplet with arbitrary isospin and hypercharge and their stability at cosmological scales is guaranteed by imposing a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We present the most general framework for describing the interaction of the dark matter with standard particles, and construct a general non-redundant basis of the gauge-invariant operators up to dimension six. The basis includes multiplets with non-vanishing hypercharge, which can also be viable DM candidates. We give two examples illustrating the phenomenological use of such a general effective framework. First, we consider the case of a scalar singlet, provide convenient semi-analytical expressions for the relevant dark matter observables, use present experimental data to set constraints on the Wilson coefficients of the operators, and show how the interplay of different operators can open new allowed windows in the parameter space of the model. Then we study the case of a lepton isodoublet, which involves co-annihilation processes, and we discuss the impact of the operators on the particle mass splitting and direct detection cross sections. These examples highlight the importance of the contribution of the various non-renormalizable operators, which can even dominate over the gauge interactions in certain cases., Comment: 39 pages, 4 figures

We study in detail a recently proposed mechanism for producing non-thermal dark photon dark matter at the end of inflation in the mass range $\mu\,{\rm eV} \lesssim m \lesssim 10\,{\rm TeV}$. A tachyonic instability induced by a rolling inflaton leads to the coherent production of dark (abelian) gauge bosons with a peak in the power spectrum corresponding to the Hubble scale at the end of inflation. As the Universe expands after inflation the dark photons redshift and, at some point in their cosmic evolution, they obtain a mass. We focus in particular on the case where the dark photons are relativistic at the time their mass is generated and examine the associated cosmic evolution to compute the relic abundance today. We also examine the late time power spectrum demonstrating explicitly that it preserves the peak generated at the end of inflation. We show that the peak corresponds to small physical scales today, $\ell_{\rm today} \sim {\rm cm} - 100\,{\rm km}$, with large density fluctuations at $\ell_{\rm today}$ leading to a clumpy nature for the dark photon dark matter. The couplings of axion-like particles are probed by different experiments across a huge range of energy scales. Accordingly, a consistent analysis of the corresponding constraints requires the use of the renormalization group equations. We compute the full one-loop renormalization group evolution of all -- relevant and marginal -- parameters in the effective field theory for axion-like particles up to dimension five, above and below the electroweak scale, assuming only that new physics does not violate CP. We show that the inverse see-saw is the most natural way of implementing neutrino masses in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity. The three extra quasi-Dirac neutrinos are needed to cancel the quadratically divergent contributions of the mirror leptons to the Higgs mass. If the T-parity of the heavy neutrino singlets is chosen to be even, their contributions to lepton flavor violating transitions are one-loop finite. The most stringent limits on this scenario result from the non-observation of these transitions. Constraints on neutrino mixing imply an upper bound on the mass of the T-odd mirror leptons at the reach of the LHC and/or future colliders., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, references added

We propose a procedure to cross-validate Monte Carlo implementations of the standard model effective field theory. It is based on the numerical comparison of squared amplitudes computed at specific phase-space and parameter points in pairs of implementations. Interactions are fully linearised in the effective field theory expansion. The squares of linear effective field theory amplitudes and their interference with standard-model contributions are compared separately. Such pairwise comparisons are primarily performed at tree level and a possible extension to the one-loop level is also briefly considered. It has been shown that the longitudinal mode of a massive vector boson can be produced by inflationary fluctuations and account for the dark matter content of the Universe. In this work we examine the possibility of instead producing the transverse mode via the coupling $\phi F \tilde F$ between the inflaton and the vector field strength. Such a coupling leads to a tachyonic instability and exponential production of one transverse polarization of the vector field, reaching its maximum near the end of inflation. At production the mass is negligible and the vectors add up coherently to form a dark electromagnetic field. As the Universe expands, the energy density of the dark electromagnetic field then redshifts like radiation until its wavelength stretches to beyond its Compton wavelength. After this point the vectors become non-relativistic and their energy density redshifts like matter. We show that these polarized transverse vectors can account for the observed dark matter relic density in the mass range $\mu$eV to hundreds of GeV. We also find that the tachyonic production mechanism of the transverse mode can accommodate larger vector masses and lower Hubble scales of inflation compared to the production mechanism for the longitudinal mode via inflationary fluctuations., Comment: 9 pages. New physics can manifest itself by an appreciable increase of the decay rate of top quarks in rare flavour-changing final states. Exploiting the large top quark production rate at the LHC, we bound four-fermion operators contributing to non-resonant $t\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^- j$ using different signal regions of the latest LHC searches for $t\rightarrow Zj$. We also provide prospects for the high-luminosity LHC to test these as well as four-fermion operators contributing to $t\rightarrow b\overline{b}j$, based on improved analysis strategies of existing searches. We single out all weakly-coupled ultraviolet completions inducing such contact interactions at tree level and translate the previous bounds to the parameter space of specific complete models. Being above the TeV, LHC bounds from rare top decays improve over those from flavour physics, electroweak precision data and other LHC searches in several cases., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures. We use a scalable optical technique to characterize more than 21000 circular nanomechanical devices made out of suspended single- and double-layer graphene on cavities with different diameters ($D$) and depths ($g$). To maximize the contrast between suspended and broken membranes we used a model for selecting the optimal color filter. The method enables parallel and automatized image processing for yield statistics. We find the survival probability to be correlated to a structural mechanics scaling parameter given by $D^4/g^3$. Moreover, we extract a median adhesion energy of $\Gamma =$ 0.9 J/m$^2$ between the membrane and the native SiO$_2$ at the bottom of the cavities., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures
