1. Deep Learning-Based Model Predictive Control for Resonant Power Converters

Abstract

Resonant power converters offer improved levels of efficiency and power density. In order to implement such systems, advanced control techniques are required to take the most of the power converter. In this context, model predictive control arises as a powerful tool that is able to consider nonlinearities and constraints, but it requires the solution of complex optimization problems or strong simplifying assumptions that hinder its application in real situations. Motivated by recent theoretical advances in the field of deep learning, this paper proposes to learn, offline, the optimal control policy defined by a complex model predictive formulation using deep neural networks so that the online use of the learned controller requires only the evaluation of a neural network. The obtained learned controller can be executed very rapidly on embedded hardware. We show the potential of the presented approach on a Hardware-in-the-Loop setup of an FPGA-controlled resonant power converter., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

4. Comparative Evaluation of Different Cables for Magnetic Couplers in Inductive Power Transfer Systems

Abstract

Copper litz wires are widely used in wireless charging stations of light-duty electric vehicles. This type of cable is specifically mentioned in the SAE J2954 standard. However, details as the number and diameter of strands, or the material of conductors are not mentioned in the standard, which makes room to address some research and innovations. In this work, several alternatives to the traditional copper-litz wires are analyzed. Specifically, aluminum litz wire, copper-clad aluminum litz wire, and copper tubes are considered as alternatives to standard litz wire for the mentioned application. Potential benefits of the considered alternatives could include weight and cost savings. However, these advantages could not be enough to justify a wiring change if the resistance of the power pads increases and, equivalently, the efficiency of the electromagnetic power transfer decreases. For this reason, a model of the parasitic resistance of windings is proposed by combining the analytical ac resistance of two-layered round strands and finite element simulations. This model is used to obtain a figure of merit related with the efficiency of the electromagnetic energy transfer which is used to compare the different cables. Apart from efficiency, thermal behavior, cost and weight are also considered for comparison purposes. As a result, some conclusions about the suitability of each cable with respect to the operating frequency range are extracted.

Abstract

Domestic induction heating (IH) is currently the technology of choice in modern domestic applications due to its advantages regarding fast heating time, efficiency, and improved control. New design trends pursue the implementation of new cost-effective topologies with higher efficiency levels. In order to achieve this aim, a direct ac–ac boost resonant converter is proposed in this paper. The main features of this proposal are the improved efficiency, reduced component count, and proper output power control. A detailed analytical model leading to closed-form expressions of the main magnitudes is presented, and a converter design procedure is proposed. In addition, an experimental prototype has been designed and built to prove the expected converter performance and the accurateness of the analytical model. The experimental results are in good agreement with the analytical ones and prove the feasibility of the proposed converter for the IH application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents the analysis and design of a new ac-ac resonant converter applied to domestic induction heating. The proposed topology, based on the half-bridge series resonant inverter, uses only two diodes to rectify the mains voltage. The proposed converter can operate with zero-voltage switching during both switch-on and switch-off transitions. Moreover, this topology doubles the output voltage, and therefore, the current in the load is reduced for the same output power. As a consequence, the converter efficiency is significantly improved. The analytical and simulation results have been verified by means of a 3600-W induction heating prototype. An efficiency study has been carried out, obtaining values higher than 96%. 37. Real-Time Impedance Monitoring During Electroporation Processes in Vegetal Tissue Using a High-Performance Generator.

Abstract

Classical application of electroporation is carried out by using fixed protocols that do not clearly assure the complete ablation of the desired tissue. Nowadays, new methods that pursue the control of the treatment by studying the change in impedance during the applied pulses as a function of the electric field are being developed. These types of control seek to carry out the treatment in the fastest way, decreasing undesired effects and treatment time while ensuring the proper tumour ablation. The objective of this research is to determine the state of the treatment by continuously monitoring the impedance by using a novel versatile high-voltage generator and sensor system. To study the impedance dynamics in real time, the use of pulses of reduced voltage, below the threshold of reversible electroporation, is tested to characterise the state-of-the-treatment without interfering with it. With this purpose, a generator that provides both low voltage for sense tissue changes and high voltage for irreversible electroporation (IRE) was developed. In conclusion, the characterisation of the effects of electroporation in vegetal tissue, combined with the real-time monitoring of the state-of-the-treatment, will enable the provision of safer and more effective treatments.
