Abstract

Spectroscopic photoemission microscopy is a well-established method to investigate the electronic structure of surfaces. In modern photoemission microscopes the electron optics allows imaging of the image plane, momentum plane, or dispersive plane, depending on the lens setting. Furthermore, apertures allow filtering of energy-, real-, and momentum space. Here, we describe how a standard spectroscopic and low energy electron microscope can be equipped with an additional slit at the entrance of the already present hemispherical analyzer to enable an angle- and energy resolved photoemission mode with micrometer spatial selectivity. We apply a photogrammetric calibration to correct for image distortions of the projective system behind the analyzer and present spectra recorded on Au(111) as a benchmark. Our approach makes data acquisition in energy-momentum space more efficient, which is a necessity for laser-based pump-probe photoemission microscopy with femtosecond time resolution., Comment: This manuscript has been peer-reviewed and is currently undergoing revision

Abstract

Despite advances in surgical technique and adjuvant treatment, endometrial cancer has recently seen an increase in incidence and mortality in the USA. The majority of endometrial cancers can be cured by surgery alone or in combination with adjuvant chemo- or radiotherapy; however, a subset of patients experience recurrence for reasons that remain unclear. Recurrence is associated with chemoresistance to carboplatin and paclitaxel and consequentially, high mortality. Understanding the pathways involved in endometrial cancer chemoresistance is paramount for the identification of biomarkers and novel molecular targets for this disease. Here, we generated the first matched pairs of carboplatin-sensitive/carboplatin-resistant and paclitaxel-sensitive/paclitaxel-resistant endometrial cancer cells and subjected them to bulk RNA sequencing analysis. We found that 45 genes are commonly upregulated in carboplatin- and paclitaxel-resistant cells as compared to controls. Of these, the leukemia inhibitory factor, (LIF), the protein tyrosine phosphatase type IVA, member 3 (PTP4A3), and the transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFB1) showed a highly significant correlation between expression level and endometrial cancer overall survival (OS) and can stratify the 545 endometrial cancer patients in the TCGA cohort into a high-risk and low-risk-cohorts. Additionally, four genes within the 45 upregulated chemoresistance-associated genes are ADAMTS5, MICAL2, STAT5A, and PTP4A3 codes for proteins for which small-molecule inhibitors already exist. We identified these proteins as molecular targets for chemoresistant endometrial cancer and showed that treatment with their correspondent inhibitors effectively killed otherwise chemoresistant cells. Collectively, these findings underline the utility of matched pair of chemosensitive and chemoresistant cancer cells to identify markers for endometrial cancer risk stratification and to serve as a pharmacogenomics model for identification of alternative chemotherapy approaches for treatment of patients with recurrent disease.

Abstract

We calculate the dynamic structure factor S (omega, q) of spinless fermions in one dimension with quadratic energy dispersion k^2/2m and long range density-density interaction whose Fourier transform f_q is dominated by small momentum-transfers q << q_0 << k_F. Here q_0 is a momentum-transfer cutoff and k_F is the Fermi momentum. Using functional bosonization and the known properties of symmetrized closed fermion loops, we obtain an expansion of the inverse irreducible polarization to second order in the small parameter q_0 / k_F. In contrast to perturbation theory based on conventional bosonization, our functional bosonization approach is not plagued by mass-shell singularities. For interactions which can be expanded as f_q = f_0 + f_0^{2} q^2/2 + O (q^4) with finite f_0^{2} we show that the momentum scale q_c = 1/ | m f_0^{2} | separates two regimes characterized by a different q-dependence of the width gamma_q of the collective zero sound mode and other features of S (omega, q). For q_c << q << k_F we find that the line-shape in this regime is non-Lorentzian with an overall width gamma_q of order q^3/(m q_c) and a threshold singularity at the lower edge., Comment: 33 Revtex pages, 17 figures

Abstract

We discuss the statistics of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a canonical ensemble of N non-interacting bosons in terms of a Landau function L_N^{BEC} (q) defined by the logarithm of the probability distribution of the order parameter q for BEC. We also discuss the corresponding Landau function for spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB), which for finite N should be distinguished from L_N^{BEC}. Only for intinite N BEC and SSB can be described by the same Landau function which depends on the dimensionality and on the form of the external potential in a surprisingly complex manner. Abstract

We generalize our recently developed super-field functional renormalization group (RG) method involving both Fermi and Bose fields [F. Schuetz, L. Bartosch, and P. Kopietz, Phys. Rev. B 72, 035105 (2005)] to include the possibility that some bosonic components of the field have a finite vacuum expectation value. We derive an exact hierarchy of flow equations for the one-line irreducible vertices and the vacuum expectation value of the field. We apply our method to an interacting Fermi system where the interaction can be decoupled in the zero-sound channel and is then mediated by a collective bosonic field. The vacuum expectation value of the zero-frequency and zero-momentum component of the bosonic field is then closely related to the fermionic density. This can be exploited to calculate the compressibility of the interacting system. By using a cutoff in the bosonic propagator, the RG can be set up such that the self-consistent Hartree approximation is imposed as initial condition for the RG flow and the corrections to this approximation are generated as the remaining degrees of freedom are successively eliminated by the RG procedure., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures; published version, some typos corrected; special issue "Renormalization Group 2005" of JPA. 12. Effective spin-wave action for ordered Heisenberg antiferromagnets in a magnetic field

We derive the effective long-wavelength Euclidean action for the antiferromagnetic spin-waves of ordered quantum antiferromagnets subject to a uniform magnetic field. We point out that the magnetic field dependence of the spin-wave dispersion predicted by the usual O(3)-quantum nonlinear sigma model disagrees with spin-wave theory. We argue that the nonlinear sigma model does not take into account all relevant spin-wave interactions and derive a modified effective action for the long-wavelength spin-waves which contains an additional quartic interaction. Abstract

We develop a new formulation of the functional renormalization group (RG) for interacting fermions. Our approach unifies the purely fermionic formulation based on the Grassmannian functional integral, which has been used in recent years by many authors, with the traditional Wilsonian RG approach to quantum systems pioneered by Hertz [Phys. Rev. B 14, 1165 (1976)], which attempts to describe the infrared behavior of the system in terms of an effective bosonic theory associated with the soft modes of the underlying fermionic problem. In our approach, we decouple the interaction by means of a suitable Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation (following the Hertz-approach), but do not eliminate the fermions; instead, we derive an exact hierarchy of RG flow equations for the irreducible vertices of the resulting coupled field theory involving both fermionic and bosonic fields. The freedom of choosing a momentum transfer cutoff for the bosonic soft modes in addition to the usual band cutoff for the fermions opens the possibility of new RG schemes. In particular, we show how the exact solution of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model emerges from the functional RG if one works with a momentum transfer cutoff. Then the Ward identities associated with the local particle conservation at each Fermi point are valid at every stage of the RG flow and provide a solution of an infinite hierarchy of flow equations for the irreducible vertices. The RG flow equation for the irreducible single-particle self-energy can then be closed and can be reduced to a linear integro-differential equation, the solution of which yields the result familiar from bosonization. The recommendations and statements were presented and adopted using a formal process (structured consensus conferences with neutral moderation, written Delphi vote). Recommendations: Part 1 of this short version of the guideline presents statements and recommendations on the epidemiology, etiology, prediction, and primary and secondary prevention of preterm birth. Ziel: Überarbeitete Leitlinie der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe (DGGG), der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe (OEGGG) und der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe (SGGG). The recommendations and statements were presented and adopted using a formal process (structured consensus conferences with neutral moderation, written Delphi vote). Abstract

With abemaciclib (monarchE study) and olaparib (OlympiA study) gaining approval in the adjuvant treatment setting, a significant change in the standard of care for patients with early stage breast cancer has been established for some time now. Accordingly, some diverse developments are slowly being transferred from the metastatic to the adjuvant treatment setting. Recently, there have also been positive reports of the NATALEE study.Other clinical studies are currently investigating substances that are already established in the metastatic setting. These include, for example, the DESTINY Breast05 study with trastuzumab deruxtecan and the SASCIA study with sacituzumab govitecan.In this review paper, we summarize and place in context the latest developments over the past months.

Abstract

Large-scale study programs on CDK4/6 inhibitors, targeted therapies, and antibody–drug conjugates launched in recent years have yielded results from current studies which are now being published in journals and presented at international conferences. In this context, new results are available from the major CDK4/6 inhibitor studies. Also, an increasing amount of data is being published from large-scale genomic studies on efficacy and resistance mechanisms in patients treated with CDK4/6 inhibitors. These results now form the basis for further research plans to investigate combination therapies and treatment sequencing. Based on the latest published results, sacituzumab govitecan is now available as a second antibody–drug conjugate; this brings an advantage in terms of overall survival for patients with hormone receptor-positive (HRpos)/HER2-negative (HER2neg) breast cancer. In this review article, we summarize the latest developments and place them in context according to the current status of research.

Abstract

The treatment of patients with early stage breast cancer has changed in recent years due to the introduction of pembrolizumab, olaparib, and abemaciclib. These and other drugs with the same class of active ingredient are currently in trial for various indications. This review article summarizes the latest results that have either been presented at major conferences such as the ESMO 2022 or published recently in international journals. This includes reports on newly discovered breast cancer genes, atezolizumab in neoadjuvant therapy in HER2-positive patients, long-term data from the APHINITY study, and on how preoperative peritumoral application of local anesthetics can influence the prognosis. We also present solid data on dynamic Ki-67 from the ADAPT studies.

Abstract

In recent years, a number of new therapies have led to advances in the treatment of patients with advanced breast carcinoma. These substances are mainly CDK4/6 inhibitors and other substances that can overcome endocrine resistance, oral selective estrogen receptor degraders, antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), and PARP inhibitors. This review summarizes and evaluates the latest study results that have been published in recent months. This includes the overall survival data of the Destiny-Breast03 study, the first analysis of the CAPItello-291 study, the comparison of CDK4/6 inhibitor treatment with chemotherapy in the first line of therapy (RIGHT Choice study), the first analysis of the Destiny-Breast02 study in the treatment setting after T-DM1 treatment, and the first analysis of the Serena-2 study.Most of these studies have the potential to significantly change the therapeutic landscape for patients with advanced breast carcinoma and show that the continued rapid development of new therapies is always producing new results.

Abstract

The St. Gallen (SG) International Breast Cancer Conference is held every two years, previously in St. Gallen and now in Vienna. This year (2023) marks the eighteenth edition of this conference, which focuses on the treatment of patients with early-stage breast carcinoma. A panel discussion will be held at the end of this four-day event, during which a panel of experts will give their opinions on current controversial issues relating to the treatment of early-stage breast cancer patients. To this end, questions are generally formulated in such a way that clinically realistic cases are presented – often including poignant hypothetical modifications. This review reports on the outcome of these discussions and summarises the data associated with individual questions raised.

ZusammenfassungKontinuierlich neue Studienergebnisse führen wiederholt zu aktualisierten Therapieempfehlungen und Leitlinien. Insbesondere beim Mammakarzinom wurden in den letzten Jahren einige Studien veröffentlicht, welche die Behandlung des frühen und fortgeschrittenen Mammakarzinoms deutlich verändert haben. Dies bedeutet jedoch nicht, dass die Meinungen aller Experten bei speziellen Fragen übereinstimmen. Gerade die Diversität bezüglich der Interpretation der Leitlinien und Studienergebnisse reflektiert die sich ständig ändernde Datenlage und ihre Komplexität sowie die Verfügbarkeit von neuen Medikamenten. Für die Therapie von Patientinnen mit frühen Stadien des Mammakarzinoms sind in den letzten Jahren neue Substanzen wie Pertuzumab, T‑DM1, Neratinib, Capecitabin und weitere hinzugekommen. Des Weiteren gibt es erste Ergebnisse zum Einsatz von CDK4/6-Inhibitoren in der adjuvanten Situation. Nicht zuletzt wird nach wie vor diskutiert, wie Multigentests eingesetzt werden können, um den Einsatz von Chemotherapien bei bestimmten Patientinnen vermeiden zu können. Diese Übersichtsarbeit fasst den Datenstand zusammen und veröffentlich die Abstimmungsergebnisse der St.‑Gallen-Brustkrebskonferenz 2021 zum Mammakarzinom in frühen Krankheitsstadien.

Abstract

Large-scale study programs on CDK4/6 inhibitors, targeted therapies, and antibody-drug conjugates launched in recent years have yielded results from current studies which are now being published in journals and presented at international conferences. In this context, new results are available from the major CDK4/6 inhibitor studies. Also, an increasing amount of data is being published from large-scale genomic studies on efficacy and resistance mechanisms in patients treated with CDK4/6 inhibitors. These results now form the basis for further research plans to investigate combination therapies and treatment sequencing. Based on the latest published results, sacituzumab govitecan is now available as a second antibody-drug conjugate; this brings an advantage in terms of overall survival for patients with hormone receptor-positive (HRpos)/HER2-negative (HER2neg) breast cancer. In this review article, we summarize the latest developments and place them in context according to the current status of research.

Abstract

The treatment of patients with early stage breast cancer has changed in recent years due to the introduction of pembrolizumab, olaparib, and abemaciclib. These and other drugs with the same class of active ingredient are currently in trial for various indications. This review article summarizes the latest results that have either been presented at major conferences such as the ESMO 2022 or published recently in international journals. This includes reports on newly discovered breast cancer genes, atezolizumab in neoadjuvant therapy in HER2-positive patients, long-term data from the APHINITY study, and on how preoperative peritumoral application of local anesthetics can influence the prognosis. We also present solid data on dynamic Ki-67 from the ADAPT studies.
