1. Shear turbulence beneath the solar tachocline

Abstract

Helioseismic inversions of the Sun's internal angular velocity profile show that the rotation changes from differential in latitude in the convection zone to almost uniform in the radiative region below. The transition occurs in a thin layer, the tachocline, which is the seat of strong shear in the vertical direction. In this Note we examine whether this rotation profile can lead to shear turbulence at the top of the radiation zone. By using the standard solar model, we show that such turbulence can be generated only in a narrow region 0.695R_sun < r < 0.713R_sun at the equator and even in narrower layers at higher latitudes. We conclude that the turbulence generated by this vertical shear is unlikely to play a significant role in the transport of matter and angular momentum, and that other mechanisms must be invoked to achieve this., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, Research note accepted by A&A

Abstract

We report new GALLEX solar neutrino results from 15 runs covering 406 days (live time) within the exposure period 19 August 1992–13 October 1993 (“GALLEX II”). With counting data considered until 4 January 1994, the new result is [78±13 (stat.) ±5 (stat.)] SNU (1σ). It confirms our previous result for the 15 initial runs (“GALLEX I”) of [81±17( stat .)±9( syst .)] SNU. After two years of recording the solar neutrino flux with the GALLEX detector the combined result from 30 solar runs (GALLEX I + GALLEX II) is [79±10( stat .)±6( syst .)] SNU (1 σ ). In addition, 19 “blank” runs gave the expected null result. GALLEX neutrino experiments are continuing.

Abstract

The examination of the experimental data concerning the reaction antiproton + He-4 yields pions + nuclei shows that the low abundance of D 2 can be explained only by assuming a low He abundance at the beginning of the radiative era. This is a completely independant confirmation of the evasion of neutrons (and antineutrons) from the emulsion before the end of the epoch where nucleogenesis might have taken place, and leads to an estimate of the size of the emulsion when T = 1 MeV.
