This article describes one school of social work's innovative online elective course to prepare Masters of Social Work (MSW) students for practice with the military, veterans and their families. Developed as part of a university-wide Veterans Initiative, this online course keeps the focus on the student veteran and uses the best practices of online education. The authors share their strategies and make recommendations for future trainings.

E-book devices (and devices that support e-books) are increasingly being integrated into the working lives of students and teachers. We discuss our pedagogical and institutional experiences with the Sony Reader in composition courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level, reporting on dynamics and challenges associated with three key literacy tasks: accessing texts, operating texts, and marking texts. We conclude with a heuristic that can help teachers and administrators adopt and design an e-book initiative. (Contains 1 note.)

Academic institutions mediate online literacy practices in meaningful and significant ways. This essay explores the nature of that mediational process, using a visual-spatial method to map out and conceptualize dynamics and structures that have a bearing on the work of composition. Although computer literacy amounts to a complex set of interconnected capacities, teachers of writing and communication have tended to ignore functional issues, which are crucial to many aspects of online work. This essay reimagines the functional side of computer literacy, arguing for an approach that is both effective and professionally responsible.

This article reports on an effort by one school of social work to introduce social work students to professional development content about working with the military, veterans, and their families through an interdisciplinary elective course about veterans. The course, Helping Veterans Transition, introduces students to the veteran population, the culture, the needs, and the services. The course emphasizes a service learning project which is a first step in engaging those who will work with veterans in the future in their own professional development. The article describes the social work course developed and taught over the past six years, the service learning projects that helped students begin the first steps in professional development, the results of a follow-up survey, and lessons learned. The article presents a professional development roadmap for developing services for student veterans in the U.S. Some examples of partnerships and collaborations developed by social work faculty and students to support these services are cited. The challenges faced by universities for supporting these services is also examined.

The organizations in the study sample were funded by a statewide part- nership formed in 2006. The researchers analyzed the descriptive data from the close-ended and rating-scale questions using standard statistical methods.

The article focuses on the findings from a needs assessment survey of student veterans at a state university in the southwestern region of the U.S. At the time of the study, the university, with a population of 32,000 students, has over 1,300 student veterans. The campus Veterans Affairs Office sent the survey link to 1,252 students, and the response rate was 26.92%.

It recalls the author's experiences in the late 1970s and early 1980s which illustrate the border challenges, and presents her views which are based on her experiences living and working in the country. The article presents a study that explores the genetics knowledge and perceptions of medical and allied health professionals about the existing statewide genetic services delivery system in the U.S. It aims to provide preliminary understanding of the participants' perceptions about types and levels of genetics knowledge important to the use of the existing system of service. It reveals that practitioners have lack of knowledge about available service and their preference for expedient. It suggests that cost factors could potentially continue to function as a barrier to services.

Background: Current studies assessing the change in pelvic tilt for ambulatory patients with cerebral palsy (CP) after surgical hamstring lengthening (SHL) lack a comparison cohort without prior SHL and are limited to younger patients. This study presents gait data of middle-aged adults with CP, primarily focusing on the pelvis, and compares pelvic tilt, trunk tilt, and knee flexion between those with and without prior SHL., Materials and Methods: A consecutive series of 54 adults with CP, a mean age of 36±13 years, and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I-III were included. Thirty-two (59%) had SHL performed at a mean age of 8±5 years. Three-dimensional gait analysis data prospectively collected at a mean of 28±14 years postoperatively were retrospectively analyzed. Chi-square tests were used to compare demographic and surgical history data and statistical parameter mapping was used to compare knee flexion during stance and pelvic and trunk tilts during the gait cycle between SHL and SHL-naive groups., Results: Age, GMFCS level, sex, race, topography, and ethnicity were not different between the groups ( P =.217-.612). Anterior pelvic tilt throughout gait was significantly greater in the SHL group compared with the SHL-naive group (63%-87%; P =.033). This difference was augmented after accounting for other surgical history and revision SHL (0%-32%, P =.019; and 46%-93%, P =.007)., Conclusion: Within a cohort of adults with CP, GMFCS levels I-III, and a mean age of 36 years, those with a history of SHL, performed a mean of 28 years prior to 3-dimensional gait analysis, walked with increased anterior pelvic tilt compared with those without a history of SHL.
