Because of their high photon flux, X-ray free-electron lasers (FEL) allow to resolve the structure of individual nanoparticles via coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) within a single X-ray pulse. Since the inevitable rapid destruction of the sample limits the achievable resolution, a thorough understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution of matter on the nanoscale following the irradiation is crucial. We present a technique to track X-ray induced structural changes in time and space by recording two consecutive diffraction patterns of the same single, free-flying nanoparticle, acquired separately on two large-area detectors opposite to each other, thus examining both the initial and evolved particle structure. We demonstrate the method at the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and soft X-ray Free-electron LASer in Hamburg (FLASH), investigating xenon clusters as model systems. By splitting a single XUV pulse, two diffraction patterns from the same particle can be obtained. For focus intensities of about $2\cdot10^{12}\,\text{W/cm}^2$ we observe still largely intact clusters even at the longest delays of up to 650 picoseconds of the second pulse, indicating that in the highly absorbing systems the damage remains confined to one side of the cluster. Instead, in case of five times higher flux, the diffraction patterns show clear signatures of disintegration, namely increased diameters and density fluctuations in the fragmenting clusters. Future improvements to the accessible range of dynamics and time resolution of the approach are discussed.

The ongoing development of intense high-harmonic generation (HHG) sources has recently enabled highly nonlinear ionization of atoms by the absorption of at least 10 extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) photons within a single atom [Senfftleben \textit{et al.}, arXiv1911.01375]. Here we investigate the role that reshaping of the fundamental, few-cycle, near-infrared (NIR) driving laser within the 30-cm-long HHG Xe medium plays in the generation of the intense HHG pulses. Using an incident NIR intensity that is higher than what is required for phase-matched HHG, signatures of reshaping are found by measuring the NIR blueshift and the fluorescence from the HHG medium along the propagation axis. These results are well reproduced by numerical calculations that show temporal compression of the NIR pulses in the HHG medium. The simulations predict that after refocusing an XUV beam waist radius of 320 nm and a clean attosecond pulse train can be obtained in the focal plane, with an estimated XUV peak intensity of 9x10^15 W/cm^2. The unprecedented brilliance of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) [1, 2] has enabled first studies of nonlinear interactions in the hard X-ray range. In particular, X-ray-optical mixing [3], X-ray second harmonic generation (XSHG) [4] and nonlinear Compton scattering (NLCS) [5] have been recently observed for the first time using XFELs. The former two experiments as well as X-ray parametric downconversion (XPDC)[6, 7] are well explained by nonlinearities in the impulse approximation[8], where electrons in a solid target are assumed to be quasi free for X-ray interactions far from atomic resonances. However, the energy of the photons generated in NLCS at intensities reaching up to 4 x 1020 W/cm2 exhibit an anomalous red-shift that is in violation with the free-electron model. Here we investigate the underlying physics of X-ray nonlinear interactions at intensities on order of 1016 W/cm2. Specifically, we perform a systematic study of XSHG in diamond. While one phase-matching geometry has been measured in Shwartz et al.[4], we extend these studies to multiple Fourier components and with significantly higher statistics, which allows us to determine the second order nonlinear structure factor. We measure the efficiency, angular dependence, and contributions from different source terms of the process. We find good agreement of our measurements with the quasi-free electron model.
