While the effects of the internet on libraries was recognized relatively early, few works have addressed network dynamics in terms of library operations. This essay identifies some implications of the shift to a networked environment and its effects on library operations, with the express aim of initiating a dialog within the profession about its broader significance. Understanding this shift, with its threats and opportunities, is critical for planning the future of libraries.

Com a conseqüència directa de la revolució digital, les biblioteques acadèmiques d'avui dia s'enfronten a la competència com a proveïdors d'informació. Utilitzant les corbes S de tecnologia de Richard N. Foster com a model analític, aquest article mostra que les biblioteques acadèmiques estan enmig d'un canvi discontinu perquè qüestionen un seguit d'assumpcions que recolzen l'actual pràctica de la biblioteconomia acadèmica. Aquest article examina les possibles implicacions de l'accés obert en la gestió de les biblioteques. Aquesta examinació té lloc en un context en què s'assumeix que el model tradicional d'edició i l'accés obert coexisteixen. L'accés obert presenta nombrosos reptes i oportunitats, però les biblioteques emprenedores trobaran noves formes per servir els usuaris en un nou entorn en el que es combina l'accés obert amb el tradicional (MOA). This article examines the likely implications of open access on library operations. The context of the examination takes place assuming that the traditional model of publication and open access coexist. Open access presents numerous challenges and opportunities, but entrepreneurial libraries will find new ways to serve their patrons in the new mixed openaccess– traditional (MOA) environment. In order to do so, these libraries will need to redesign their organization and this can be expected to stretch both monetary and human resources.
