Modern concrete construction consumes significant amounts of freshwater, which is a valuable natural resource. Using seawater can be an alternative solution to reduce freshwater consumption for sustainable development. The durability of seawater construction materials should be studied for better understanding of their long-term behavior. This study investigated the effect of seawater on the hydration and the sulfate resistance of noncement mortars prepared by mixing ground granulated blast furnace slag (BFS), carbide slag (CS), and silica fume (SF) to understand the feasibility of using seawater and solid waste materials to develop low-carbon construction materials. CS in the mix acted as an alkali activator for the hydration and strength development of the solid wastes. Two batch specimens were prepared, one batch mixed with seawater and the other mixed with freshwater for comparison. A compressive test investigated the effect of seawater on the mechanical properties. Heat flow, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and thermogravimetry tests were used to understand the hydration. The results suggest that the seawater could accelerate the hydration by producing a large amount of hydrocalumite, which improves the compressive strength at early ages. Durability testing was carried out by immersing specimens in a sulfate solution for various durations. Sulfate resistance was characterized by XRD, and ettringite and Friedel's salt were the main corrosion products when the specimens were immersed in sulfate solution. Corrosion could be reduced by seawater in the specimens. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the microstructure of the hydration products, which showed that the corrosion was a progressive process. This work presents an alternative method of teaching undergraduate introductory physics laboratory. Students are presented with an experimental scenario "Rolling object on an inclined plane" and guided to develop their own laboratory activities in a studio-style setting. The overall goal of this alternative approach is to shift part of the learning responsibility to students. Through guided self-developed activities, students establish the connections between different physics concepts. Such a shift makes students active participants in the classroom, allows them to explore ideas independently, and discover through doing the exploring. Furthermore, the pedagogy is aimed at (i) motivating and actively engaging students in the learning process, (ii) helping students learn how to think independently, (iii) developing scientific ideas, and (iv) taking ownership of the learning process. Assessment of data from a 3-year pilot study showed improvement in students' technical writing skills (30%), creative lab and research skills (6%), as well as critical thinking and quantitative skills (6%). In addition, students who participated in the study scored higher (6%) than their control group counterparts on the final exam. The AlSi7Mg alloy was fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM), and its microstructure and properties at different building directions after heat treatment were analyzed. Results show that the microstructure of SLM AlSi7Mg samples containes three zones: fine grain zone, coarse grain zone, and heat affected zone. The fine-grain regions locate inside the molten pool, and the grains are equiaxed. The coarse-grain regions locate in the overlap of molten pools. After T6 treatment, the microstructure at the molten pool boundary is still the network eutectic Si, but the network structure becomes discrete, and is composed of intermittent, chain-like eutectic Si particles. The yield strength at three directions (xy, 45°, z direction) of the AlSi7Mg alloy samples fabricated by SLM is improved after T6 heat treatment. Background: Patients with locally advanced sigmoid colon cancer (LASCC) have limited treatment options and a dismal prognosis with poor quality of life. This retrospective study aimed to further evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACRT) followed by surgery as treatment for select patients with unresectable LASCC.Methods: We studied patients with unresectable LASCC who received NACRT between November 2010 and April 2019. The NACRT regimen consisted of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) of 50 Gy to the gross tumor and positive lymphoma node and 45 Gy to the clinical target volume. Capecitabine‑based chemotherapy was administered every 2 (mFOLFOX6) or 3 weeks (CAPEOX). Surgery was scheduled 6-8 weeks after radiotherapy.Results: Seventy‑two patients were enrolled in this study. Patients had a regular follow-up (median, 41.1 months; range, 8.3-116.5 months). Seventy‑one patients completed NACRT, and sixty-five completed surgery. Resection with microscopically negative margins (R0 resection) was achieved in 64 patients (88.9%). Pathologic complete response was observed in 15 patients (23.1%), and multivisceral resection was necessary in 38 patients (58.3%). The cumulative probability of 3-year overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were 75.8 and 70.7%, respectively.Conclusions: For patients with unresectable LASCC, neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy is feasible, surgery can be performed safely and may result in increased survival and organ preservation rates. The surface of poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers with self-healing and ultraviolet (UV)-resistance performance play the key role in prolonging their service lifespan. Although great advances have been made in the single aspect of above two properties, integration of self-healing and anti-UV performance into the surface of PBO fiber is still a challenge. In this study, the coagulation strategy mediated by metal-organic framework (MOF) is proposed to construct the multifunctional surface of PBO fibers. The spindle-like iron (III)-based MOF (MIL-88B-NH 2) nanocrystals are firstly immobilized onto the surface of PBO-COOH through hydrothermal reaction, then serving as the medium layer to further immobilize sufficient graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Benefitting from the favorable near-infrared (NIR, 808 nm) photothermal conversion performance of GO nanolayers, the monofilament composite-PBO@Fe-MIL-88B-NH 2 -GO-TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) exhibited a stable and high self-healing efficiency (approximately 80%) within five cycle times. Meanwhile, the cooperative adsorption and shielding weaken effects of MOF-GO nanolayers enabled PBO fibers with excellent anti-UV properties that are superior to much reported literatures after 96 h aging time and eventually increased by 75% compared with untreated PBO fiber. In view of the varieties and multifunctionalities of MOFs and carbon nanomaterials, MOF-mediated coagulation strategy would provide guidance for preparing multifunctional composite materials. The expansion of anatomically modern humans (AMHs) from Africa around 65,000 to 45,000 y ago (ca. 65 to 45 ka) led to the establishment of present-day non-African populations. Some paleoanthropologists have argued that fossil discoveries from Huanglong, Zhiren, Luna, and Fuyan caves in southern China indicate one or more prior dispersals, perhaps as early as ca. 120 ka. We investigated the age of the human remains from three of these localities and two additional early AMH sites (Yangjiapo and Sanyou caves, Hubei) by combining ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis with a multimethod geological dating strategy. Although U-Th dating of capping flowstones suggested they lie within the range ca. 168 to 70 ka, analyses of aDNA and direct AMS 14C dating on human teeth from Fuyan and Yangjiapo caves showed they derive from the Holocene. OSL dating of sediments and AMS 14C analysis of mammal teeth and charcoal also demonstrated major discrepancies from the flowstone ages; the difference between them being an order of magnitude or more at most of these localities. Our work highlights the surprisingly complex depositional history recorded at these subtropical caves which involved one or more episodes of erosion and redeposition or intrusion as recently as the late Holocene. Background: The pregnane X receptor (PXR) not only plays an important role in cellular metabolism processes but also induces the resistance of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells to molecularly targeted drugs by mediating their metabolism and clearance by these cells. Endothelial PAS domain-containing protein 1 (EPAS-1) acts as a coactivator to regulate the transcription factor activity of PXR. In the present study, a microRNA that potentially targets EPAS-1, namely miR-3609, was identified using the miRDB tool. Methods: The expression of miR-3609 and EPAS-1 was examined by qPCR. Lentiviral particles containing the full-length sequences of miR-3609 (pri-miR-3609) were prepared. The antitumor effect of antitumor agents was examined by the in vitro and in vivo assays. Results: The expression of miR-3609 was negatively correlated with that of EPAS-1 in both HCC clinical specimens and paired non-tumor specimens, and the effect of miR-3609 on the expression of EPAS-1 was confirmed by Western blot experiments. Overexpression of miR-3609 decreased the expression of EPAS-1 and, in turn, repressed the activation of the PXR pathway. miR-3609 decreased the transcription factor activation of PXR, repressed its recruitment to its target gene promoter regions, and decreased the expression of its target genes CYP3A4 and P-GP. In addition, miR-3609 decelerated the metabolism and clearance of sorafenib in HCC cells and enhanced the antitumor effect of sorafenib in HCC cells. Background: Immune-related pancytopenia (IRP) is a kind of autoimmune disease mediated by autoantibodies in bone marrow. T helper 9 (Th9) cell is a new subset of T cell discovered recently, which mainly expresses cytokine interleukin-9 (IL-9) to exert immune function. Th9 cells are associated with a variety of inflammatory diseases, but the role of Th9 cells in IRP remains unclear.Methods: Fifty patients with IRP and 20 healthy controls were enrolled. The percentage of Th9 cells was detected by flow cytometry (FCM) and ELISA. CD4+ lymphocytes were sorted by magnetic beads, and the mRNA expression levels of Th9 cells related transcription factors PU.1 and BATF were detected by RT-PCR.Results: The percentage of Th9 cells in CD3+CD4+ cells was 2.73 ± 1.96% in the untreated group, which was significantly higher than those in the remission group (1.21 ± 0.86%) (p < 0.01) and the control group (0.68 ± 0.40%) (p < 0.001). And that in the remission group was significantly higher than that in the control group (p < 0.05). The level of IL-9 in the untreated group was 183.91 ± 112.42 pg/mL, which was significantly higher than that in the remission group (105.96 ± 64.79 pg/mL) (p < 0.01) and control group (56.03 ± 14.49 pg/mL) (p < 0.001). That in the remission group was also significantly higher than that in the control group (p < 0.01). They were negatively correlated with hemoglobin, red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet counts and positively correlated with the percentage of CD19+B cells and CD5+CD19+/CD19+B cells, respectively. The mRNA expression levels of PU.1 and BATF in IRP patients were higher than those in controls (p < 0.05).Conclusions: The percentage of Th9 cells in the peripheral blood and the level of IL-9 in the serum of patients with IRP were increased, which was related to the severity of the disease. Background: The relationship between spinal sagittal subtypes and lumbar disc degeneration is unclear. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration and age in asymptomatic healthy individuals with different sagittal alignments. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, we examined 209 asymptomatic young and middle-aged volunteers (123 women and 86 men) who were divided into the following three groups according to age: groups A (20–30 years), B (31–40 years), and C (41–50 years). The volunteers underwent full-spine standing lateral radiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI, 3.0 T) of the lumbar spine. Based on panoramic radiography, two observers measured the spinopelvic parameters and classified the spine into Roussouly subtypes. The degree of disc degeneration was assessed based on T2-weighted images according to the Pfirrmann classification. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of degeneration of type I spine between groups B and C at L4-L5 (P < 0.03) and L5-S1 (P < 0.01) and between groups A and C at L1-L2 (P < 0.04) and L4-L5 (P < 0.01). The degeneration degree of type II spine at all levels were significantly different between groups A and C. No statistically significant difference was found between groups A and B in all subtypes except for type II spine at L1-L2 (P < 0.04). A significant difference was found at four levels between groups B and C in type III spine (P < 0.05) and between groups A and C. For type IV spine, there was a significant difference in the degree of degeneration at L4-L5 (P < 0.02) between groups A and C. Moreover, almost all single parameters were not strongly correlated with the degree of disc degeneration. Conclusion: The different spinal subtypes have characteristics of lumbar disc degeneration at specific levels with age. We considered that spinal classification could be used as a predictor of lumbar disc degeneration. Euglena, a new superfood on the market, is a nutrient-rich, green single-celled microorganism that features the characteristics of both plant and animal. When cultivated under different conditions, Euglena produces different bioactive nutrients. Interestingly, Euglena is the only known microorganism whose chloroplasts are easy to lose under stress and become permanently bleached. We applied gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine the metabolomes of wild-type (WT) Euglena gracilis and its bleached mutant OflB2 under light stimulation. We found a significant metabolic difference between WT and OflB2 cells in response to light. An increase of membrane components (phospholipids and acylamides) was observed in WT, while a decrease of some stimulant metabolites was detected in OflB2. Rice, the most consumed in Asian and constitute important source of amino acids. The present study evaluated the suitability of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy to predict amino acid contents (AACs) using 1210 rice samples representing a wide range of grain qualities and genetic background. Calibration models established by combining different spectral derivatives, scatter and baseline correction methods, and regression algorithm were compared using full cross validation. A modified partial least square model (MPLS) with the spectral derivative treatment "2, 3, 3, 1" (2nd order derivative computed based on 3 data points, and 3 and 1 data points in the 1st and 2nd smoothing, respectively) and weighted multiplicative scattering correction (WMSC) method was identified as the best model for simultaneously measurement of 14 AACs in brown rice flour. The high model quality is reflected by RSQ of 0.914∼0.969, standard error of calibration (SEC) of 0.0187%∼0.0553%, 1-VR of 0.901∼0.955, SECV of 0.0214%∼0.0579%, and residual prediction deviation (RPD) of 2.58∼3.85. These results indicated that NIRS coupled with an appropriate pre-processing, multivariate regression could be a rapid and reliable method for quantification of AACs in rice breeding programs and quality control in the food industry. In this paper, we consider a Stokes problem arising in fluid dynamics and thermal science, which can be transformed to a symmetric saddle point problem by using the mixed finite element approximation. A relaxed non-linear inexact Uzawa algorithm is proposed for solving the problem, and the convergence of this algorithm is also considered. Abstract The distinct atomic structure of twin boundary (TB) significantly affects the physical and mechanical behaviors of materials. In this work, the local atomic structure, the formation and diffusion of vacancy in (10 1 ¯ 2), (11 2 ¯ 1), (11 2 ¯ 2) and (10 1 ¯ 1) TBs of α-Ti were investigated in details using ab initio calculations. Our calculations illustrated that most atoms at or close to the TBs have lower atom coordination number (CN), thereby experiencing the positive changes of local volume and tension strain. The CN and strain state significantly affect the vacancy formation. It's shown that vacancy can easily form in these TBs, with the lower formation energy in the range of 1.26–1.59 eV. Our calculations further shown vacancy diffusion are somewhat anisotropic in 10 1 ¯ 2 , 10 1 ¯ 1 and 11 2 ¯ 2 TBs planes. Vacancy prefers to diffuse along the direction of 1 ¯ 2 1 ¯ 0 in (10 1 ¯ 2) and (10 1 ¯ 1) TBs, and along the twinning direction of 11 2 ¯ 3 ¯ in 11 2 ¯ 2 TB, with the migration barriers of ∼0.43, ∼0.27, and ∼0.31 eV, respectively. Vacancy diffusion in (11 2 ¯ 1) TB plane is isotropic, with the migration barrier of ∼0.25 eV. Our calculations demonstrated that the fast diffusion channel mediated by vacancy for metallic atoms transport in these TBs can be mainly ascribed to the lower migration barrier and formation energy of vacancy in TBs. Background: The optimal treatment for the rare subtype of non‐Hodgkin lymphoma, extranodal natural killer/T‐cell lymphoma (ENKTL), nasal‐type, has not been clearly defined. The purpose of the study was to investigate the efficacy of sequential and "Sandwich" chemotherapy and extended involved‐field intensity‐modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) in patients with stage IE/IIE extranodal ENKTL, nasal‐type. Methods: One hundred and fifty‐five patients with stage IE/IIE nasal‐type ENKTL were enrolled in the study, including 99 patients treated with sequential chemotherapy and extended involved‐field IMRT (SCRT) and 56 patients with "Sandwich" chemotherapy and extended involved‐field IMRT and chemotherapy (SCRCT). All patients were treated with extended involved‐field IMRT with median dose of 54.6 Gy to the primary tumor and positive lymph nodes. Ninety‐four patients had Ann Arbor stage IE disease, and 61 patients had stage IIE disease. Results: The 5‐year rates of loco‐regional recurrence (LRR), progression‐free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were 17.0%, 78.5%, and 84.7%, respectively. Univariate analysis revealed that EBV DNA copy after treatment (normal vs elevated level) was significant prognostic factor for LRR, PFS, and OS (P < 0.001); therapeutic method (SCRT vs SCRCT) was significant prognostic factor for PFS (71.0% vs 91.8%, P = 0.011), but there was no significant effect on 5‐year LRR and OS (22.2% vs 8.2%, P = 0.051 for LRR; 80.9% vs 91.8%, P = 0.199 for OS). Conclusions: Compared with SCRT, SCRCT was significantly associated with higher PFS rates and showed a trend toward improved loco‐regional control. EBV DNA copy after treatment is a good index for recurrence and prognosis for stage IE/IIE ENKTL patients. Neuroinflammation contributes a lot to the progression of neuropathic pain. miR-381 is involved in various pathological processes. However, the role of miR-381 in neuropathic pain development remains barely understood. Therefore, in our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of miR-381 on the process of neuropathic pain progression by establishing a rat model using chronic sciatic nerve injury (CCI). Here, we observed that miR-381 was dramatically decreased in CCI rats. Up-regulation of miR-381 strongly reduced neuropathic pain behaviors including mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia. In addition, inflammatory cytokine expression, including IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α were significantly repressed by overexpression of miR-381. High mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1) and Chemokine CXC receptor 4 (CXCR4) participate in neuropathic pain development. In our present study, HMGB1 and CXCR4 were predicted as direct targets of miR-381 by employing bioinformatics analysis. Overexpression of miR-381 was able to restrain the expression of HMGB1 and CXCR4 greatly. The direct correlation between HMGB1 and CXCR4 and miR-381 was confirmed in our research. Furthermore, we found that HMGB1 and CXCR4 were increased in CCI rats time-dependently. Moreover, it was demonstrated that silence of HMGB1 and CXCR4 in CCI rats depressed neuropathic pain progression greatly. [Display omitted] • CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 (CCTO) was firstly adopted to activate sulfite for As(III) removal. • Cu and Ti bimetals heterogeneously activate sulfite on the catalyst interface. • SO 4 •− was predominately responsible for As(III) oxidation. • A kinetic model of CCTO/sulfite system was established. A new activation technology for sulfite (S(IV)) using a perovskite CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 (CCTO) catalyst has been proposed to remediate the As(III) polluted water. When 0.05 g·L−1 CCTO and 0.4 mmol·L−1 S(IV) were mixed, 90.6% of As(III) could be removed in 30 min at an initial pH of 8.0. Dissolved oxygen played an indispensable role in the reaction. CCTO can interact with S(IV) via a heterogeneous catalytic route on its surface. Electrochemical characterization indicated that the electron transfer process between the surface Cu/ Ti atoms and S(IV) ions evoked the activation of S(IV), leading to the generation of SO 4 •−, which played a dominant role in the oxidation of As(III). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have disclosed the spontaneous adsorption of sulfite on CCTO surface. A kinetics study determined the steady-state concentration of SO 4 •− to be 4.29 × 10−14 mol·L−1, which reacts with As(III) with a second-order reaction rate constant of 3.83 × 1010 L·mol−1·s−1. Furthermore, the CCTO catalyst was highly reusable, the structure of which did not significantly alter during the reaction. Sodium- (Na+) and potassium- (K+) ion batteries are cost-effective alternatives to lithium-ion (Li+) batteries due to the abundant sodium and potassium resources. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are essential for safer and more efficient Na+ and K+ batteries because they often exhibit low ionic conductivity at room temperature. While zwitterionic (ZW) materials enhance Li+ battery conductivity, their potential for Na+ and K+ transport in batteries remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the effect of three ZW molecules (ChoPO4, i.e., 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine, ImSO3, i.e., sulfobetaine ethylimidazole, and ImCO2, i.e., carboxybetaine ethylimidazole) on the dissociation of Na+ and K+ coordination with ethylene oxide (EO) chains in EO-based electrolytes through molecular dynamics simulations. Our results showed that ChoPO4 possessed the highest cation–EO10 dissociation ability, while ImSO3 exhibited the lowest. Such dissociation ability correlated with the cation–ZW molecule coordination strength: ChoPO4 and ImSO3 showed the strongest and the weakest coordination with cations. However, the cation–ZW molecule coordination could slow the cationic diffusion. The competition of these effects resulted in accelerating or decelerating cationic diffusion. Our simulated results showed that ImCO2 enhanced Na+ diffusion by 20%, while ChoPO4 and ImSO3 led to a 10% reduction. For K+, ChoPO4 reduced its diffusion by 40%, while ImCO2 and ImSO3 caused a similar decrease of 15%. In this study, a novel electrically steerable planar array antenna based on liquid crystal (LC) is elaborately designed, fabricated and measured. The occupied area and undesired coupling of the meander line phase shifter are reduced by chamfering appropriately. Combined with the electrically tunable LC material, the miniaturised phase shifter achieves 146° phase shift and 122.7°/dB frequency-dependent figure-of-merit. Utilising in series phase shifters, power dividers and in parallel patches, the proposed antenna features compact configuration 41° continuous wide beam scanning range from forward to backward at the satellite communication band 12.5 GHz. At the same time, it maintains satisfactory reflection coefficient and impedance bandwidth at each angle. Camellia wumingensis, a neglected species known only from limestone areas of Guangxi, China, is formally described and illustrated here. It is morphologically similar to C. flavida var. patens in having current-year branchlets purplish red, petiole adaxially grooved, flowers axillary or terminal, ovary glabrous, capsule oblate, and seeds brown, but is readily distinguished by the leaf texture and size, number of secondary veins, flower size, flower bud shape and size, number of petals, degree of fusion of the outer filaments, and pericarp thickness. Other related species C. flavida and C. pinguoensis var. terminalis are also compared with C. wumingensis in the paper, and the differences between them are obvious. In addition to a diagnosis and detailed description, information on the geographical distribution, images of morphological characters and pollen grains, and a provisional conservation status assessment are provided for this species. In the present study, we report a direct and nondestructive method to functionalize carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Novel highly reactive diarylcarbene derivative is designed and synthesized. Different to previous approaches, this diarylcarbene contains atomic transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator segments, which can serve as starting points for further polymer grafting. Then, the initiator segments are covalently bonded to the CNTs via one-step cycloaddition of diarylcarbene and the succeeding ATRP links polystyrene (PS) chains to the CNTs. In order to further verify the effectiveness of modification, we use the obtained CNTs (PS- f CNTs) as reinforcement to enhance PS films. By addition 0.5 wt% PS-fCNTs, the PS composite films reveal 79.3 and 85.2% increases in tensile strength and Young's modulus. Benefiting from the abundant Ni 3 S 2 -NiFe LDH interfaces, the as-prepared catalyst delivers 50, 500 and 1000 mA cm−2 with an overpotential of only 230, 285 and 303 mV for oxygen evolution reaction, respectively, registering as one of the best performing non-precious metal OER catalysts. In situ and ex situ analysis reveal that the Ni 3 S 2 was in situ partially transformed under an electrooxidation environment into NiOOH over an equally important electrically conductive Ni 3 S 2 to drive proficient catalysis. This strategy can be extended to fabricate Ru-Ni 3 S 2 -NiFe LDHs/NF electrocatalyst for high active hydrogen evolution reaction. Coupling these two catalysts achieved remarkable current densities of 10, 100 and 500 mA cm−2 at low voltages of 1.47, 1.71 and 1.85 V upon driving overall water splitting, respectively, superior to the performance of current industrial catalysts (200–400 mA cm−2 at 1.8–2.40 V). There is a growing interest in the correlation between working time and environmental pressures, but prior empirical studies were mostly focused on static methods within limited country groups. To fill the gap, this study aims to stimulate the discussion by distinguishing between different time periods for developed and developing country groups respectively. In particular, we contribute to a further understanding of the environmental effects of working time reduction policies by comparing the differences under the dynamic framework of system Generalized Method of Moments. We applied this dynamic panel regression approach for 55 countries worldwide over the period 1980–2010, and employing carbon emissions per capita as the environmental indicator. In general, results confirmed the significant relationship between hours of work and environmental impacts in developed economies, although this is not the case for the developing counterparts. Interestingly, the significant correlations for the developed country group turned from positive during the first sub-period (1980–2000) to negative during the second sub-period (2001–2010). Connecting these results with previous literature, we proposed the reasons of rebound energy use derived from certain leisure activities which were more energy-intensive if excessive non-working time provided. Surfaces of stored grain bulk are often reconstructed from organized point sets with noise by 3-D laser scanner in an online measuring system. As a result, denoising is an essential procedure in processing point cloud data for more accurate surface reconstruction and grain volume calculation. A classified denoising method was presented in this research for noise removal from point cloud data of the grain bulk surface. Based on the distribution characteristics of cloud point data, the noisy points were divided into three types: The first and second types of the noisy points were either sparse points or small point cloud data deviating and suspending from the main point cloud data, which could be deleted directly by a grid method; the third type of the noisy points was mixed with the main body of point cloud data, which were most difficult to distinguish. The point cloud data with those noisy points were projected into a horizontal plane. An image denoising method, discrete wavelet threshold (DWT) method, was applied to delete the third type of the noisy points. Three kinds of denoising methods including average filtering method, median filtering method and DWT method were applied respectively and compared for denoising the point cloud data. Experimental results show that the proposed method remains the most of the details and obtains the lowest average value of RMSE (Root Mean Square Error, 0.219) as well as the lowest relative error of grain volume (0.086%) compared with the other two methods. Furthermore, the proposed denoising method could not only achieve the aim of removing noisy points, but also improve self-adaptive ability according to the characteristics of point cloud data of grain bulk surface. horacic ortic neurysms and issections (TAAD) are a major cause of death in the United States. The spectrum of TAAD ranges from genetic disorders, such as Marfan syndrome, to sporadic isolated disease of unknown cause. We hypothesized that genomic copy number variants (CNVs) contribute causally to early onset TAAD (ETAAD). We conducted a genome-wide SNP array analysis of ETAAD patients of European descent who were enrolled in the National Registry of Genetically Triggered Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms and Cardiovascular Conditions (GenTAC). Genotyping was performed on the Illumina Omni-Express platform, using PennCNV, Nexus and CNVPartition for CNV detection. ETAAD patients (n = 108, 100% European American, 28% female, average age 20 years, 55% with bicuspid aortic valves) were compared to 7013 dbGAP controls without a history of vascular disease using downsampled Omni 2.5 data. For comparison, 805 sporadic TAAD patients with late onset aortic disease (STAAD cohort) and 192 affected probands from families with at least two affected relatives (FTAAD cohort) from our institution were screened for additional CNVs at these loci with SNP arrays. We identified 47 recurrent CNV regions in the ETAAD, FTAAD and STAAD groups that were absent or extremely rare in controls. Nine rare CNVs that were either very large (>1 Mb) or shared by ETAAD and STAAD or FTAAD patients were also identified. Four rare CNVs involved genes that cause arterial aneurysms when mutated. The largest and most prevalent of the recurrent CNVs were at Xq28 (two duplications and two deletions) and 17q25.1 (three duplications). The percentage of individuals harboring rare CNVs was significantly greater in the ETAAD cohort (32%) than in the FTAAD (23%) or STAAD (17%) cohorts. We identified multiple loci affected by rare CNVs in one-third of ETAAD patients, confirming the genetic heterogeneity of TAAD. The ascending thoracic aorta is designed to withstand biomechanical forces from pulsatile blood. Thoracic aortic aneurysms and acute aortic dissections (TAADs) occur as a result of genetically triggered defects in aortic structure and a dysfunctional response to these forces. Here, we describe mutations in the forkhead transcription factor FOXE3 that predispose mutation-bearing individuals to TAAD. We performed exome sequencing of a large family with multiple members with TAADs and identified a rare variant in FOXE3 with an altered amino acid in the DNA-binding domain (p.Asp153His) that segregated with disease in this family. Additional pathogenic FOXE3 variants were identified in unrelated TAAD families. In mice, Foxe3 deficiency reduced smooth muscle cell (SMC) density and impaired SMC differentiation in the ascending aorta. Foxe3 expression was induced in aortic SMCs after transverse aortic constriction, and Foxe3 deficiency increased SMC apoptosis and ascending aortic rupture with increased aortic pressure. These phenotypes were rescued by inhibiting p53 activity, either by administration of a p53 inhibitor (pifithrin-α), or by crossing Foxe3-/- mice with p53-/- mice. Our data demonstrate that FOXE3 mutations lead to a reduced number of aortic SMCs during development and increased SMC apoptosis in the ascending aorta in response to increased biomechanical forces, thus defining an additional molecular pathway that leads to familial thoracic aortic disease. The simplification of 3D laser scanning point cloud is an important step of surface reconstruction and volume estimation of bulk grain in granary. This study presented an adaptive simplification algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (PSO). It introduced PSO into the average distance method, a conventional simplification method. The basic idea of this algorithm was to adaptively determine the optimal point reducing intervals of scanning lines according to original point cloud density by PSO. By using the 3D point cloud scanned from bulk grain surface in granary, the proposed algorithm was validated. Compared with the average distance method, the proposed algorithm obtained more evenly distributed point set, smaller reduction ratio (6.96%) and higher volume estimation accuracy (relative error was less than 3?). The 3D laser scanner (GSLS003, Jilin University and SkyViTech Co., Ltd., Hangzhou, China) used in this study could scan the complete picture of the grain surface in a granary in one time, so the acquired point cloud data do not have to be jointed. For the good simplification performance and capability of updating the reducing interval at any moment, the proposed algorithm and the 3D laser scanner could be used to realize online real-time measurement of stored bulk grain volume in granary. In the present study, we demonstrate that the degeneration of intervertebral discs is caused by ageing and apoptosis of matrix cells. Apoptosis is as essential as the function of proteoglycan synthesis in assessing the possible degeneration of intervertebral discs; paeoniflorin (PF) induces cytoprotective effects on various types of cells. In this study, the function of PF in inhibiting Fas ligand (FasL)-induced apoptosis in annulus fibrosus cells was assessed, and the correlation between apoptosis and the Fas-FasL pathway was determined. Annulus fibrosus cells were derived from the intervertebral discs of 1-month-old Sprague Dawley rats; the cells were characterised by toluidine blue staining and subjected to apoptosis with FasL. PF was diluted to various concentrations and added to annulus fibrosus cells at various times. The impact of PF and FasL on cell apoptosis of annulus fibrosus cells was determined by flow cytometry. Western blot analysis was performed to determine the protein expression levels of Fas and caspase-3. The percentages of apoptotic annulus fibrosus cells as well as the expression levels of caspase-3 and Fas were significantly reduced following treatment with 208, 20.8 or 2.08 μM PF. Summary α Helices are a basic unit of protein secondary structure and therefore the interaction between helices is crucial to understanding tertiary and higher-order folds. Comparing subtle variations in the structural and sequence motifs between membrane and soluble proteins sheds light on the different constraints faced by each environment and elucidates the complex puzzle of membrane protein folding. Here, we demonstrate that membrane and water-soluble helix pairs share a small number of similar folds with various interhelical distances. The composition of the residues that pack at the interface between corresponding motifs shows that hydrophobic residues tend to be more enriched in the water-soluble class of structures and small residues in the transmembrane class. The latter group facilitates packing via sidechain- and backbone-mediated hydrogen bonds within the low-dielectric membrane milieu. The helix-helix interactome space, with its associated sequence preferences and accompanying hydrogen-bonding patterns, should be useful for engineering, prediction, and design of protein structure. BACKGROUND: The study aimed to estimate the value of embryonal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (ENOTES) in treating severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) complicated with abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS). METHODS: The patients, who were randomized into an ENOTES group and an operative group, underwent ENOTES and laparotomy, respectively. The results and complications of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: Enterocinesia was observed earlier in the ENOTES group than in the operative group. Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score of patients in the ENOTES group was lower than that of the operative group on the 1st, 3rd and 5th post-operative day (P<0.05). The cure rate was 96.87% in the ENOTES group, which was statistically different from 78.12% in the operative group (P<0.05). There were significant differences in complications and mortality between the two groups (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Compared with surgical decompression, ENOTES associated with flexible endoscope therapy is an effective and minimal invasive procedure with less complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aims: Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has therapeutic effects on various diseases, while its effect on developing cirrhosis as well as the underlying mechanism remained largely unknown. Methods: Twenty C57BL/6 mice were randomly separated into 2 groups of ten each. One group received transplantation of MSCs, while the other group received saline as control. The mice then received intraperitoneal injection of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) twice per week for 8 weeks to develop cirrhosis. After another 4 weeks, the levels of cirrhosis in these mice were evaluated by liver fibrosis area, portal pressure, sodium balance and excretion. Transcripts of transforming growth factor β 1 (TGFβ1) and bone morphogenic protein 7 (BMP7) in the mouse livers were quantified by RT-qPCR. BMP7-depleted MSCs were prepared and applied in this model, and compared to MSCs. Results: Liver fibrosis, portal hypertension and sodium retention that were developed by CCl4, were all significantly alleviated by MSCs transplantation, which decreased TGFβ1 levels and increased BMP7 levels in the injured liver. MSCs were found to express extremely high levels of BMP7. Knockdown of BMP7 in MSCs completely abolished the protective effect of MSCs against CCl4-induced cirrhosis. Objective: To investigate the frequency and determinants of liver stiffness measurement (LSM) failure by means of FibroScan in “real-life” Chinese patients. Methods: A total of 38,464 “real-life” Chinese patients in 302 military hospital of China through the whole year of 2013, including asymptomatic carrier, chronic hepatitis B, chronic hepatitis C, liver cirrhosis (LC), alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and other, were enrolled, their clinical and biological parameters were retrospectively investigated. Liver fibrosis was evaluated by FibroScan detection. S probe (for children with height less than 1.20 m) and M probe (for adults) were used. LSM failure defined as zero valid shots (unsuccessful LSM), or the ratio of the interquartile range to the median of 10 measurements (IQR/M) greater than 0.30 plus median LSM greater or equal to 7.1 kPa (unreliable LSM). Results: LSM failure occurred in 3.34% of all examinations (1286 patients out of 38,464), among them, there were 958 cases (2.49%) with unsuccessful LSM, and 328 patients (0.85%) with unreliable LSM. Statistical analyses showed that LSM failure was independently associated with body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 kg/m2, female sex, age greater than 50 years, intercostal spaces (IS) less than 9 mm, decompensated liver cirrhosis and HCC patients. There were no significant differences among other diseases. By changing another skilled operator, success was achieved on 301 cases out of 1286, which reduced the failure rate to 2.56%, the decrease was significant (P<0.0001). Conclusions: The principal reasons of LSM failure are ascites, obesity and narrow of IS. The failure rates of HCC, decompensated LC, elder or female patients are higher. The elastic deformation of the levitation electromagnet (LM) of the high-speed maglev vehicle brings uneven levitation gaps and displacement differences between measured gap signals and the real gap in the middle of the LM, and then reduces dynamic performances of the electromagnetic levitation unit. However, most of the published literature has paid little attention to the dynamic deformation of the LM under complex line conditions. In this paper, considering the flexibility of the LM and the levitation bogie, a rigid-flexible coupled dynamic model is established to simulate deformation behaviors of the LMs of the maglev vehicle passing through the 650 m radius horizontal curve. Simulated results indicate that the deflection deformation direction of the same LM on the front transition curve is always opposite to that on the rear transition curve. Similarly, the deflection deformation direction of a left LM on the transition curve is opposite to that of the corresponding right LM. Furthermore, deflection deformation amplitudes of the LMs in the middle of the vehicle are always very small (less than 0.2 mm). However, the deflection deformation of the LMs at both ends of the vehicle is considerably large, and the maximum deflection deformation is about 0.86 mm when the vehicle passes at the balance speed. This forms a considerable displacement disturbance for the nominal levitation gap of 10 mm. Zwitterioniccarboxybetaine and sulfobetaine materials have shownan excellent ability to resist nonspecific protein adsorption. Itis desirable to obtain a better understanding of zwitterionicmaterials based on their molecular structures. This work aims to understandthe roles of charged groups in zwitterionic moieties and todesign new protein-resistant zwitterionic moieties beyond carboxybetaineand sulfobetaine. We conducted molecular simulations to studythe hydration, self-association, and protein interactions of 12 zwitterionicmoieties derived from three anionic groups (carboxylic, sulfonate,and sulfate) and four cationic groups (quaternary ammonium, tertiaryammonium, secondary ammonium, and primary ammonium). The partial chargesof atoms in these moieties were obtained from quantum chemical calculations.Hydration was studied by evaluating the hydration free energy of moietiesand the hydration structure and dynamics of the charged groups. Allzwitterionic moieties have strong hydration, but their structuraland dynamic properties depend on the types of cationic and anionicgroups involved. The self-association and protein interactions ofzwitterionic moieties also show relationships with the chargedgroups. Abstract: A recombinant inbred line (RIL) population bred from a cross between a javanica type (cv. D50) and an indica type (cv. HB277) rice was used to map seven quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for thousand grain weight (TGW). The loci were distributed on chromosomes 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 10. The chromosome 3 QTL qTGW3.2 was stably expressed over two years, and contributed 9–10% of the phenotypic variance. A residual heterozygous line (RHL) was selected from the RIL population and its selfed progeny was used to fine map qTGW3.2. In this “F2” population, the QTL explained about 23% of the variance, rising to nearly 33% in the subsequent “F2:3” generation. The physical location of qTGW3.2 was confined to a ~556kb region flanked by the microsatellite loci RM16162 and RM16194. The region also contains other factors influencing certain yield-related traits, although it is also possible that qTGW3.2 affects these in a pleiotropic fashion. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Although inherited GJA1 (encoding Cx43) gene mutations most often lead to oculodentodigital dysplasia and related disorders, four variants have been linked to erythrokeratodermia variabilis et progressiva (EKVP), a skin disorder characterized by erythematous and hyperkeratotic lesions. While two autosomal-dominant EKVP-linked GJA1 mutations have been shown to lead to augmented hemichannels, the consequence(s) of keratinocytes harboring a de novo P283L variant alone or in combination with a de novo T290N variant remain unknown. Interestingly, these variants reside within or adjacent to a carboxy terminus polypeptide motif that has been shown to be important in regulating the internalization and degradation of Cx43. Cx43-rich rat epidermal keratinocytes (REKs) or Cx43-ablated REKs engineered to express fluorescent protein-tagged P283L and/or T290N variants formed prototypical gap junctions at cell–cell interfaces similar to wildtype Cx43. Dye coupling and dye uptake studies further revealed that each variant or a combination of both variants formed functional gap junction channels, with no evidence of augmented hemichannel function or induction of cell death. Tracking the fate of EKVP-associated variants in the presence of the protein secretion blocker brefeldin A, or an inhibitor of protein synthesis cycloheximide, revealed that P283L or the combination of P283L and T290N variants either significantly extended Cx43 residency on the cell surface of keratinocytes or delayed its degradation. However, caution is needed in concluding that this modest change in the Cx43 life cycle is sufficient to cause EKVP, or whether an additional underlying mechanism or another unidentified gene mutation is contributing to the pathogenesis found in patients. This question will be resolved if further patients are identified where whole exome sequencing reveals a Cx43 P283L variant alone or, in combination with a T290N variant, co-segregates with EKVP across several family generations. Treatment of ocular infection involves pharmacotherapy with steroids and antibiotic drops, such as moxifloxacin hydrochloride (MFH) and dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DSP). To characterize the pharmacokinetics of these two compounds, we performed and validated a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method to quantify them in rabbit ocular tissues and plasma. We used protein precipitation to extract the compounds. The analyte and internal standard (IS) were separated using a Shim-pack Scepter C18 column. The mobile phase was composed of 0.1% formic acid water (A) and methanol (B). MFH and DSP were detected using positive ion electrostatic ionization (ESI) in multiple reaction monitoring mode (MRM). The calibration curves for both compounds showed good linearity over concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 200 ng/mL in rabbit ocular tissues and plasma. The lower limit of quantification for both MFH and DSP was 0.5 ng/mL. We validated this method for selectivity, linearity (r2 > 0.99), precision, accuracy, matrix effects, and stability. Thus, we used this method to assess the pharmacokinetic (PK) characteristics of MFH and DSP in rabbit ocular tissues and plasma after single doses. Oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD) is mainly an autosomal dominant human disease caused by mutations in the GJA1 gene, which encodes the gap junction protein connexin43 (Cx43). Surprisingly, there have been two autosomal recessive mutations reported that cause ODDD: a single amino acid substitution (R76H) and a premature truncation mutation (R33X). When expressed in either gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC)-deficient HeLa cells or Cx43-expressing NRK cells, the R76H mutant trafficked to the plasma membrane to form gap junction-like plaques, whereas the R33X mutant remained diffusely localized throughout the cell, including the nucleus. As expected, the R33X mutant failed to form functional channels. In the case of the R76H mutant, dye transfer studies in HeLa cells and electrical conductance analysis in GJIC-deficient N2a cells revealed that this mutant could form functional gap junction channels, albeit with reduced macroscopic and single channel conductance. Alexa 350 dye transfer studies further revealed that the R76H mutant had no detectable negative effect on the function of co-expressed Cx26, Cx32, Cx37 or Cx40, whereas the R33X mutant exhibited significant dominant or trans-dominant effects on Cx43 and Cx40 as manifested by a reduction in wild-type connexin gap junction plaques. The coal rich in semi-fusinite was selected to run liquefaction rests in tubing-bomb reactors in a pre-heated sand bath. The petrological features of liquefaction residues were observed by microscopy, and the comparative discussion on chemical structure on raw coal and relatively liquefaction residues were presented by using FF-IR, 13C-NMR, and Py-GC/MS techniques. The results show that the liquefaction conversion reaches to more than 50% although coal used with high semi-fusinite content. The optical examination of liquefaction residues show that the partial semi-fusinites become plastic, and even formes hollow spheres, which indicate that semi-fusinites have involved in the liquefaction reaction. The comparison of chemical structure of raw coal and relatively liquefaction residues clearly show that the changes of chemical structures during liquefaction are occurred. Furthermore, the results of Py-GC/MS show that the compounds in residue are mainly composed of alklynaphthalene, C2-naphthalene and C3-naphthalene are main constitutions. : The Notch pathway can have both oncogenic and tumor suppressor roles, depending on cell context. For example, Notch signaling promotes T cell differentiation and is leukemogenic in T cells, whereas it inhibits early B cell differentiation and acts as a tumor suppressor in B cell leukemia where it induces growth arrest and apoptosis. The regulatory mechanisms that contribute to these opposing roles are not understood. Aberrant promoter DNA methylation and histone modifications are associated with silencing of tumor suppressor genes and have been implicated in leukemogenesis. Using methylated CpG island amplification (MCA)/DNA promoter microarray, we identified Notch3 and Hes5 as hypermethylated in human B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). We investigated the methylation status of other Notch pathway genes by bisulfite pyrosequencing. Notch3, JAG1, Hes2, Hes4 and Hes5 were frequently hypermethylated in B leukemia cell lines and primary B-ALL, in contrast to T-ALL cell lines and patient samples. Aberrant methylation of Notch3 and Hes5 in B-ALL was associated with gene silencing and was accompanied by decrease of H3K4 trimethylation and H3K9 acetylation and gain of H3K9 trimethylation and H3K27 trimethylation. 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine treatment restored Hes5 expression and decreased promoter hypermethylation in most leukemia cell lines and primary B-ALL samples. Restoration of Hes5 expression by lentiviral transduction resulted in growth arrest and apoptosis in Hes5 negative B-ALL cells but not in Hes5 expressing T-ALL cells. Zwitterionic carboxybetaines (CBs) are ubiquitous innature andconsidered promising materials for biological and chemical applications.A thorough understanding of the effect of carbon spacer length (CSL)on molecular properties is important. In this work, using moleculardynamics simulation and quantum chemical calculation, we investigatedthe effect of CSL on the molecular properties of CB molecules. Thehydration number, structure, and dynamics of carboxylic and trimethylammonium groups were investigated and found to present different behaviorsin regards to the variation of CSL. The simulation results with partialcharges developed from quantum chemical calculations were comparedwith those with partial charges from the OPLS all atom (OPLSAA) forcefield. In this work, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study a carboxybetaine methacrylate (CBMA) hydrogel under various swelling states. The water content in this study ranged from 28% to 91% of the total weight of the hydrogel. Three transitions of the CBMA hydrogel were observed as the water content increased. The first transition occurs when the water content increases from 33% to 37%. The observed kink in the self-diffusion coefficient of water indicates that the hydration of the polymer network of the hydrogel is saturated; the further added water is in a less confined state. The second transition was found to be related to the physical cross-links of the polymer network. As the water content rises to above 62%, the lifetime of the physical cross-links decreases significantly. This abrupt change in the lifetime indicates that the transition represents the equilibrium swelling state of the hydrogel. Finally, the third transition was observed when the water content goes above 81%. The significant increases in the bond and angle energies of the polymer network indicate that the hydrogel reaches its upper limit swelling state at this transition. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the associations between two zwitterions (carboxybetaine and sulfobetaine) and four types of cations (Li, Na, K, and Cs) in aqueous solutions. We studied the number and lifetime of various zwitterion–cation associations and observed that both carboxybetaine and sulfobetaine have the same order of association number and lifetime: Li> Na> K> Cs. Simulation results showed that the association variation as a function of cation types for these two zwitterions is significantly different. The effect of anion type on the order was also investigated by varying the type of anions from Cl–to Br–and F–. In order to further investigate zwitterion–cation association, we simulated the systems either with one type of zwitterion and two types of cations or with one type of cation and both carboxybetaine and sulfobetaine presented. This allowed direct competition between the solutes, and the observed association number and lifetime validated the order. Simulation results further demonstrated that, although CB associates stronger with Li橷 Na똖 SB, the latter is associated preferentially by K橷 Cs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chromosomal deletions or reciprocal duplications of the 16p13.1 region have been implicated in a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, epilepsies, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In this study, we investigated the association of recurrent genomic copy number variants (CNVs) with thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections (TAAD). By using SNP arrays to screen and comparative genomic hybridization microarrays to validate, we identified 16p13.1 duplications in 8 out of 765 patients of European descent with adult-onset TAAD compared with 4 of 4,569 controls matched for ethnicity (P = 5.0x10-5 , OR = 12.2). The findings were replicated in an independent cohort of 467 patients of European descent with TAAD (P = 0.005, OR = 14.7). Patients with 16p13.1 duplications were more likely to harbor a second rare CNV (P = 0.012) and to present with aortic dissections (P = 0.010) than patients without duplications. Duplications of 16p13.1 were identified in 2 of 130 patients with familial TAAD, but the duplications did not segregate with TAAD in the families. MYH11, a gene known to predispose to TAAD, lies in the duplicated region of 16p13.1, and increased MYH11 expression was found in aortic tissues from TAAD patients with 16p13.1 duplications compared with control aortas. These data suggest chromosome 16p13.1 duplications confer a risk for TAAD in addition to the established risk for neuropsychiatric disorders. It also indicates that recurrent CNVs may predispose to disorders involving more than one organ system, an observation critical to the understanding of the role of recurrent CNVs in human disease and a finding that may be common to other recurrent CNVs involving multiple genes. The intensive pursuit of cost-effective electrocatalysts capable of enabling highly efficient and stable water splitting comprised of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is quite imperative but challenging. Herein, a 3-dimensional (3D) hierarchical architecture consisted of copper nitride (Cu 3 N) and Co-Ni carbonate hydroxides (CoNiCHs) on copper foam (CF) was synthesized, and the Cu 3 N@CoNiCHs@CF requires quite small overpotentials (η s) of 182 and 155 mV to afford current density (j 10) of 10 mA cm−2 for HER and OER, respectively. More importantly, it requires a comparably low potential of 1.58 V to deliver j 10 upon driving overall water splitting due to an optimal integration of the 3D hierarchical configuration and the desirable interface interplay of Cu 3 N and CoNiCHs, outperforming those of noble metals and most of the benchmarking bifunctional electrocatalysts. Abstract: The grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation study on the separation performance of zeolites (MFI, MOR, CFI and DON) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to ethanol–water mixtures is reported. The calculation is performed with different bulk percentage under the ambient temperature and pressure. The results show zeolites prefer water to ethanol and could be used for ethanol dehydration. Only water can enter CNT55, but for other CNTs, because the CNT is more hydrophobic than zeolite, the selectivity of CNTs to ethanol is larger than 1, and CNT77 is very fit to condense dilute ethanol solution. CNT77 show excellent performance for its special nanoscale. It prefers ethanol to water in all fraction range. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

To investigate the consequences of macromolecular crowding on the behavior of a globular protein, we performed a combined experimental and computational study on the 148-residue single- domain α/β protein, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans apoflavodoxin. In vitro thermal unfolding experiments, as well as assessment of native and denatured structures, were probed by using far-UV CD in the presence of various amounts of Ficoll 70, an inert spherical crowding agent. Ficoll 70 has a concentration-dependent effect on the thermal stability of apoflavodoxin (ΔTm of 20°C at 400 mg/ml; pH 7). As judged by CD, addition of Ficoll 70 causes an increase in the amount of secondary structure in the native-state ensemble (pH 7, 20°C) but only minor effects on the denatured state. Theoretical calculations, based on an off-lattice model and hardsphere particles, are in good agreement with the in vitro data. The simulations demonstrate that, in the presence of 25% volume occupancy of spheres, native flavodoxin is thermally stabilized, and the free energy landscape shifts to favor more compact structures in both native and denatured states. The difference contact map reveals that the native-state compaction originates in stronger interactions between the helices and the central β-sheet, as well as by less fraying in the terminal helices. Abstract: Dry seeds of Nicotiana tabacum (L) cv. K346 were flown with a recoverable satellite, the Chinese “Shen Zhou III” for 162h. After spaceflight, a crinkly leaf and delay flowering mutant of tobacco (T-cldf), which phenotype differed from the ground control (K346), was obtained from the seedlings after 48d of the recoverable satellite-flown seeds germination. Major characteristics of T-cldf phenotype included crinkly leaf with outgrowth of the adaxial surface among the secondary veins and delay flowering. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis showed that five polymorphic bands were detected between T-cldf and ground control. The results suggested that recoverable satellite-flown condition could bring inheritable mutagenic effects on tobacco seeds and maybe used as a tool for accelerating the progress in tobacco breeding.
