We study radiative transfer in participating binary stochastic mixtures in two dimensions (2D) by developing an accurate and efficient simulation tool. For two different sets of physical parameters, 2D benchmark results are presented, and it is found that the influence of the stochastic mixture on radiative transfer is clearly parameter-dependent. Our results confirm that previous multidimensional results obtained in different studies are basically consistent, which is interpreted in terms of the relationship between the photon mean free path lp and the system size L. Nonlinear effects, including those due to scattering and radiation–material coupling, are also discussed. To further understand the particle size effect, we employ a dimensionless parameter lp/L, from which a critical particle size can be derived. On the basis of further 2D simulations, we find that an inhomogeneous mix is obtained for lp/L > 0.1. Furthermore, 2D material temperature distributions reveal that self-shielding and particle–particle shielding of radiation occur, and are enhanced when lp/L is increased. Our work is expected to provide benchmark results to verify proposed homogenized models and/or other codes for stochastic radiative transfer in realistic physical scenarios.

Abstract Hyperuricemia can induce acute and chronic kidney damage, but the pathological mechanism remains unclear. The potential role of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) α2 in hyperuricemia-induced renal injury was investigated in this study. Acute and chronic hyperuricemic nephropathy was induced by administering intraperitoneal injections of uric acid and oxonic acid to AMPK α2 knockout and wild-type mice. Changes in renal function, histopathology, inflammatory cell infiltration, renal interstitial fibrosis, and urate deposition were analyzed. In both acute and chronic hyperuricemic nephropathy mouse models, knockout of AMPK α2 significantly reduced serum creatinine levels and renal pathological changes. The tubular expression of kidney injury molecule-1 was also reduced in hyperuricemic nephropathy mice deficient in AMPK α2. In addition, knockout of AMPK α2 significantly suppressed the infiltration of renal macrophages and progression of renal interstitial fibrosis in mice with chronic hyperuricemic nephropathy. Knockout of AMPK α2 reduced renal urate crystal deposition, probably through increasing the expression of the uric acid transporter, multidrug resistance protein 4. In summary, AMPK α2 is involved in acute and chronic hyperuricemia-induced kidney injury and may be associated with increased urate crystal deposition in the kidney.

The impact of capsule imperfections is one of the challenges in achieving reproducible, high-gain ignition of inertial confinement fusion (ICF). The nonuniformities of capsule imperfections, which create instability seeds during the shock propagation, may cause significant performance degradation. A systematic study of the propagation of collisional shock wave in highly nonuniform plasmas is carried out using a hybrid fluid-PIC code, which enables the analysis of electromagnetic fields, ion mixing, and plasma viscosity self-consistently. During shock propagation, it interacts with multiple bubbles and significant material mixing in the nonuniform plasmas are observed. Consequently, the average viscosity of the post-shock plasma in the nonuniform case increases to $1\sim 2$ times that of the uniform case. These results provide a better understanding of the possible influence of capsule imperfections in ICF implosions.

The interaction and interpenetration of two counter-propagating plasma shocks are investigated via hybrid fluid-PIC (particle-in-cell) simulations. This study seeks to probe the kinetic effects and ion collisions on the structure of colliding plasma shocks in complex multi-ion-species plasma, in particular, the presence of the expansion of high- Z plasma bubbles against the low- Z filled gas inside an ICF hohlraum. The superposition of shock wave results in a wave-like electric field in the downstream region. The electric field can further reduce the kinetic energy of the incoming particles, and modulate the ion density profile. It finally generates a new downstream platform of high temperature and high density. However, on the hundred-ps time scale, cumulative ion collisions can still significantly alter the structure of the shock wave and the reflection of ions by the shock front. This study will help to improve the predictions of hohlraum plasma states and the understanding of the shock wave interactions.

Objective Lupus nephritis (LN) is a major complication and cause of death among patients with SLE. This research used in vivo and in vitro experiments to explore the therapeutic potential of metformin in kidney injury from LN-induced inflammation.Methods In vivo study, 8-week-old MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/J (MRL/lpr) mice were randomly divided into two groups (n=12 each): daily administration of 0.3 mg/mL metformin in drinking water and control (water only). Body weight and urinary samples were measured biweekly. Mice were sacrificed after 8-week treatment to harvest serum, lymph nodes, spleen and kidneys. In vitro study, human kidney-2 (HK-2) cells were pretreated with 1 mM metformin for 1 hour and then stimulated with 20 µg/mL lipopolysaccharides (LPS) or 10 ng/mL tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) for another 48 hours. Protein was collected for subsequent analysis.Results We found that metformin administration improved renal function in MRL/lpr lupus-prone mice, measured by decreased urea nitrogen and urinary proteins. Metformin reduced immunoglobulin G and complement C3 deposition in glomeruli. The treatment also downregulated systemic and renal inflammation, as seen in decreased renal infiltration of F4/80-positive macrophages and reduced splenic and renal MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) and TNF-α, and renal IL-1β (interleukin 1β) expression. Metformin administration decreased renal expression of necroptosis markers p-RIPK1 (phosphorylated receptor-interacting protein kinase 1) and p-MLKL, along with tubular injury marker KIM-1 (kidney injury molecule-1) in lupus mice. In addition, metformin alleviated the necroptosis of HK-2 cells stimulated by LPS and TNF-α, evidencing by a decrease in the expression of necroptosis markers p-RIPK1, p-RIPK3 and p-MLKL, and the inflammasome-related markers NLRP3 (NLR family pyrin domain containing 3), ASC (apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD), caspase-1. Mechanistically, metformin treatment upregulated p-AMPK (phosphorylated AMP-activated protein kinase) and downregulated p-STAT3 (phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3) expression in the kidneys. Moreover, AMPKα2 knockdown abolished the protective effects of metformin in vitro.Conclusions Metformin alleviated kidney injury in LN though suppressing renal necroptosis and inflammation via the AMPK/STAT3 pathway.

In proton radiography, degeneracy of electric and magnetic fields in deflecting the probe protons can prevent full interpretation of proton flux perturbations in the detection plane. In this paper, theoretical analyses and numerical simulations suggest that the contributions of the electric and magnetic fields can be separately obtained by analyzing the difference between the flux distributions of two discriminated proton energies in a single shot of proton radiography. To eliminate the influence of field evolution on the separation, a strategy is proposed in which slow field evolution is assumed or an approximate estimate of field growth is made. This could help achieve a clearer understanding of the radiographic process and allow further quantitative analysis.

Shock-driven hydrodynamic instabilities in a plasma usually lead to interfacial mixing and the generation of electromagnetic fields, which are nonequilibrium processes coupling kinetics with meso- and macroscopic dynamics. The understanding and modeling of these physical processes are very challenging tasks for single-fluid hydrodynamic codes. This work presents a new framework that incorporates both kinetics and hydrodynamics to simulate shock waves and hydrodynamic instabilities in high-density plasmas. In this hybrid code, ions are modeled using the standard particle-in-cell method together with a Monte Carlo description of collisions while electrons are modeled as a massless fluid, with the electron heat flux and fluid–particle energy exchange being considered in the electron pressure equation. In high-density plasmas, Maxwell’s equations are solved using Ohm’s law instead of Ampère’s law. This hybrid algorithm retains ion kinetic effects and their consequences for plasma interpenetration, shock wave propagation, and hydrodynamic instability. Furthermore, we investigate the shock-induced (or gravity-induced) turbulent mixing between a light and a heavy plasma, where hydrodynamic instabilities are initiated by a shock wave (or gravity). This study reveals that self-generated electromagnetic fields play a role in the formation of baroclinic vorticity along the interface and in late-time mixing of the plasmas. Our results confirm the ability of the proposed method to describe shock-driven hydrodynamic instabilities in a plasma, in particular, nonequilibrium processes that involve mixing and electromagnetic fields at the interface.

The effect of an externally applied magnetic field on the ion acceleration by laser-driven collisionless shocks is examined by means of multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. For the interaction of ultra-intense sub-picosecond laser pulses with the near-relativistic critical-density plasma, the longitudinal transport of the laser generated fast electrons are significantly inhibited by the kilo-Tesla (kT) level transverse magnetic field, resulting in a thermal pressure which significantly exceeds the laser radiation pressure in the hot electron accumulation region. As a result, the accumulated plasma expands into the vacuum and leads to acceleration of a supersonic plasma flow in the opposite direction through the rocket effect, which streams into the target and drives a supercritical magnetized collisionless shock. In comparison with the case without the external magnetic field, where an electrostatic collisionless shock can be driven, the energy flux of the shock accelerated quasi-monoenergetic ion beam is considerably increased by an order of magnitude due to the strength enhancement of the magnetized shock.

BACKGROUND:Schistosomiasis remains an important public health issue in China and worldwide. Oncomelania hupensis is the unique intermediate host of schistosoma japonicum, and its change influences the distribution of S. japonica. The Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has substantially changed the ecology and environment in the Dongting Lake region. This study investigated the impact of water level and elevation on the survival and habitat of the snails. METHODS:Data were collected for 16 bottomlands around 4 hydrological stations, which included water, density of living snails (form the Anxiang Station for Schistosomiasis Control) and elevation (from Google Earth). Based on the elevation, sixteen bottomlands were divided into 3 groups. ARIMA models were built to predict the density of living snails in different elevation areas. RESULTS:Before closure of TGD, 7 out of 9 years had a water level beyond the warning level at least once at Anxiang hydrological station, compared with only 3 out of 10 years after closure of TGD. There were two severe droughts that happened in 2006 and 2011, with much fewer number of flooding per year compared with other study years. Overall, there was a correlation between water level changing and density of living snails variation in all the elevations areas. The density of living snails in all elevations areas was decreasing after the TGD was built. The relationship between number of flooding per year and the density of living snails was more pronounced in the medium and high elevation areas; the density of living snails kept decreasing from 2003 to 2014. In low elevation area however, the density of living snails decreased after 2003 first and turned to increase after 2011. Our ARIMA prediction models indicated that the snails would not disappear in the Dongting Lake region in the next 7 years. In the low elevation area, the density of living snails would increase slightly, and then stabilize after the year 2017. In the medium elevation region, the change of the density of living snails would be more obvious and would increase till the year 2020. In the high elevation area, the density of living snails would remain stable after the year 2015. CONCLUSION:The TGD influenced water levels and reduced the risk of flooding and the density of living snails in the study region. Based on our prediction models, the density of living snails in all elevations tends to be stabilized. Control of S. japonica would continue to be an important task in the study area in the coming decade.
