It is usually assumed that the memory of any thermo-mechanical protocol applied to a glass can be erased by heating the material in the supercooled liquid. While this is true for thermally treated amorphous solids, we show that hydrostatic compression can irreversibly modify the atomic motion, thermodynamic state and structure of a prototypical metallic glass-former, in a way which depends on the degree of ergodicity reached by the material during compression. While enhanced kinetic and thermodynamic stability can be obtained by quenching the dense liquid, high-pressure annealing in the glass leads to thermal rejuvenation and complex structural rearrangements at the level of the short and medium range order. When heated above their glass transition temperature, these compressed glasses do not convert into the pristine supercooled liquid but rather transform into different systems, challenging the generally accepted idea of an equilibrium recovery controlled solely by the microscopic $\alpha$-relaxation process.

We introduce novel entropy-dissipative numerical schemes for a class of kinetic equations, leveraging the recently introduced scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) approach. Both first and second order schemes are constructed. Since the positivity of the solution is closely related to entropy, we also propose positivity-preserving versions of these schemes to ensure robustness, which include a scheme specially designed for the Boltzmann equation and a more general scheme using Lagrange multipliers. The accuracy and provable entropy-dissipation properties of the proposed schemes are validated for both the Boltzmann equation and the Landau equation through extensive numerical examples., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

P-wave superconductors hold immense promise for both fundamental physics and practical applications due to their unusual pairing symmetry and potential topological superconductivity. However, the exploration of the p-wave superconductors has proved to be a complex endeavor. Not only are they rare in nature but also the identification of p-wave superconductors has been an arduous task in history. For example, phase-sensitive measurement, an experimental technique which can provide conclusive evidence for unconventional pairing, has not been implemented successfully to identify p-wave superconductors. Here, we study a recently discovered family of superconductors, A2Cr3As3 (A = K, Rb, Cs), which were proposed theoretically to be a candidate of p-wave superconductors. We fabricate superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) on exfoliated K2Cr3As3, and perform the phase-sensitive measurement. We observe that such SQUIDs exhibit a pronounced second-order harmonic component sin(2{\phi}) in the current-phase relation, suggesting the admixture of 0- and {\pi}-phase. By carefully examining the magnetic field dependence of the oscillation patterns of critical current and Shapiro steps under microwave irradiation, we reveal a crossover from 0- to {\pi}-dominating phase state and conclude that the existence of the {\pi}-phase is in favor of the p-wave pairing symmetry in K2Cr3As3.

We introduce in this paper two time discretization schemes tailored for a range of Wasserstein gradient flows. These schemes are designed to preserve mass, positivity and to be uniquely solvable. We develop in this paper a new regularized flow dynamic approach to construct efficient numerical schemes for Wasserstein gradient flows in Lagrangian coordinates. Instead of approximating the Wasserstein distance which needs to solve constrained minimization problems, we reformulate the problem using the Benamou-Brenier's flow dynamic approach, leading to algorithms which only need to solve unconstrained minimization problem in $L^2$ distance. Our schemes automatically inherit some essential properties of Wasserstein gradient systems such as positivity-preserving, mass conservative and energy dissipation. We present ample numerical simulations of Porous-Medium equations, Keller-Segel equations and Aggregation equations to validate the accuracy and stability of the proposed schemes. Compared to numerical schemes in Eulerian coordinates, our new schemes can capture sharp interfaces for various Wasserstein gradient flows using relatively smaller number of unknowns.

In recent decades, there has been a persistent pursuit of applications for surface/edge states in topological systems, driven by their dissipationless transport effects. However, there have been limited tangible breakthroughs in this field. This work demonstrates the remarkable properties of the topological insulator Ta2Pd3Te5, as a thermometer. This material exhibits a power-law correlation in temperature-dependent resistance at low temperatures, stemming from its Luttinger liquid behavior of edge states, while exhibiting semiconductor behavior at high temperatures. The power-law behavior effectively addresses the issue of infinite resistance in semiconductor thermometers at ultra-low temperatures, thereby playing a crucial role in enabling efficient thermometry in refrigerators supporting millikelvin temperatures or below. By employing chemical doping, adjusting thickness, and controlling gate voltage, its power-law behavior and semiconductor behavior can be effectively modulated. This enables efficient thermometry spanning from millikelvin temperatures to room temperature, and allows for precise local temperature measurement. Furthermore, this thermometer exhibits excellent temperature sensitivity and resolution, and can be fine-tuned to show small magnetoresistance. In summary, the Ta2Pd3Te5 thermometer, also referred to as a topological thermometer, exhibits outstanding performance and significant potential for measuring a wider range of temperatures compared to conventional low-temperature thermometers., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Graphene-based, high quality two-dimensional electronic systems have emerged as a highly tunable platform for studying superconductivity. Specifically, superconductivity has been observed in both electron-doped and hole-doped twisted graphene moire systems, whereas in crystalline graphene systems, superconductivity has so far only been observed in hole-doped rhombohedral trilayer and hole-doped Bernal bilayer graphene (BBG). Recently, enhanced superconductivity has been demonstrated in BBG due to the proximity with a monolayer WSe2. Here, we report the observation of superconductivity and a series of flavor-symmetry-breaking phases in both electron- and hole-doped BBG/WSe2 device by electrostatic doping. The strength of the observed superconductivity is tunable by applied vertical electric fields. The maximum Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature for the electron- and hole-doped superconductivity is about 210 mK and 400 mK, respectively. Superconductivities emerge only when applied electric fields drive BBG electron or hole wavefunctions toward the WSe2 layer, underscoring the importance of the WSe2 layer in the observed superconductivity. We find the hole-doped superconductivity violates the Pauli paramagnetic limit, consistent with an Ising-like superconductor. In contrast, the electron-doped superconductivity obeys the Pauli limit, even though the proximity induced Ising spin-orbit coupling is also notable in the conduction band. Our findings highlight the rich physics associated with the conduction band in BBG, paving the way for further studies into the superconducting mechanisms of crystalline graphene and the development of novel superconductor devices based on BBG.

The unique solvability and error analysis of the original Lagrange multiplier approach proposed in [8] for gradient flows is studied in this paper. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition that must be satisfied for the nonlinear algebraic equation arising from the original Lagrange multiplier approach to admit a unique solution in the neighborhood of its exact solution, and propose a modified Lagrange multiplier approach so that the computation can continue even if the aforementioned condition is not satisfied. Using Cahn-Hilliard equation as an example, we prove rigorously the unique solvability and establish optimal error estimates of a second-order Lagrange multiplier scheme assuming this condition and that the time step is sufficient small. We also present numerical results to demonstrate that the modified Lagrange multiplier approach is much more robust and can use much larger time step than the original Lagrange multiplier approach.

When applying the classical multistep schemes for solving differential equations, one often faces the dilemma that smaller time steps are needed with higher-order schemes, making it impractical to use high-order schemes for stiff problems. We construct in this paper a new class of BDF and implicit-explicit (IMEX) schemes for parabolic type equations based on the Taylor expansions at time $t^{n+\beta}$ with $\beta > 1$ being a tunable parameter. These new schemes, with a suitable $\beta$, allow larger time steps at higher-order for stiff problems than that is allowed with a usual higher-order scheme. For parabolic type equations, we identify an explicit uniform multiplier for the new second- to fourth-order schemes, and conduct rigorously stability and error analysis by using the energy argument. We construct new higher-order implicit-explicit (IMEX) schemes using the generalized scalar auxiliary variable (GSAV) approach for the Landau-Lifshitz equation. These schemes are linear, length preserving and only require solving one elliptic equation with constant coefficients at each time step. We show that numerical solutions of these schemes are uniformly bounded without any restriction on the time step size, and establish rigorous error estimates in $l^{\infty}(0,T;H^1(\Omega)) \bigcap l^{2}(0,T;H^2(\Omega))$ of orders 1 to 5 in a unified framework.

Modern detector technology and highly brilliant fourth-generation synchrotrons allow to improve the temporal resolution in time-resolved diffraction studies. Profiting from this, we applied temperature scanning X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to probe the dynamics of a Pt-based metallic glass former in the glass, glass transition region, and supercooled liquid, covering up to six orders of magnitude in time scales. Our data demonstrates that the structural alpha-relaxation process is still observable in the glass, although it is partially masked by a faster source of decorrelation observed at atomic scale. We present an approach that interprets these findings as the superposition of heterogeneous liquid-like and stress-driven ballistic-like atomic motions. This work not only extends the dynamical range probed by standard isothermal XPCS, but also clarifies the fate of the alpha-relaxation across the glass transition and provides a new perception on the anomalous, compressed temporal decay of the density-density correlation functions observed in metallic glasses and many out-of-equilibrium soft materials.

Magnetic Weyl semimetal (MWS) is a unique topological state with open surface Fermi arc states and other exotic transport phenomena. However, most reported MWSs show multiple pairs of Weyl points and complicated Fermi surfaces, which increases the difficulty of the investigation into the intrinsic chiral transport property. In this wor, we successfully synthesized a soft magnetic Weyl semimetal Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a single pair of Weyl points under magnetic fields. The Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillation with a single frequency, as well as a linear hall resistance with the same carrier density, is observed up to 50 Tesla, indicating a single pair of Weyl points around the Fermi level with a massless fermion ($m^* = 0.121 m_0$, $\pi$ Berry phase). Such a single pair of Weyl points is further confirmed by the density functional theory calculations. The magnetic ordering and band topology can be easily tuned by the external magnetic field. The field-induced MWS Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a single pair of Weyl points is a good platform to detect chiral transport properties, including possible quantum anomalous Hall effect.

Nonlinear transport is a unique functionality of noncentrosymmetric systems, which reflects profound physics, such as spin-orbit interaction, superconductivity and band geometry. However, it remains highly challenging to enhance the nonreciprocal transport for promising rectification devices. Here, we observe a light-induced giant enhancement of nonreciprocal transport at the superconducting and epitaxial CaZrO3/KTaO3 (111) interfaces. The nonreciprocal transport coefficient undergoes a giant increase with three orders of magnitude up to 105 A-1T-1. Furthermore, a strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling effective field of 14.7 T is achieved with abundant high-mobility photocarriers under ultraviolet illumination, which accounts for the giant enhancement of nonreciprocal transport coefficient. Our first-principles calculations further disclose the stronger Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength and the longer relaxation time in the photocarrier excitation process, bridging the light-property quantitative relationship. Our work provides an alternative pathway to boost nonreciprocal transport in noncentrosymmetric systems and facilitates the promising applications in opto-rectification devices and spin-orbitronic devices., Comment: 38 pages, 17 figures

This study investigates the spatial distribution of inertial particles in turbulent Taylor-Couette flow. Direct numerical simulations are performed using a one-way coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach, with a fixed inner wall Reynolds number of 2500 for the carrier flow, while the particle Stokes number varies from 0.034 to 1 for the dispersed phase. We first examine the issue of preferential concentration of particles near the outer wall region. Employing two-dimensional (2D) Voronoi analysis, we observe a pronounced particle clustering with increasing $St$, particularly evident in regions of low fluid velocity. Additionally, we investigate the concentration balance equation, inspired by the work of johnson et al.(2020), to examine particle radial distribution. We discern the predominant sources of influence, namely biased sampling, turbophoresis, and centrifugal effects. Across all cases, centrifugal force emerges as the primary driver, causing particle migration towards the outer wall. Biased sampling predominantly affects smaller inertial particles, driving them towards the inner wall due to sampling within Taylor rolls with inward radial velocity. Conversely, turbophoresis primarily impacts larger inertial particles, inducing migration towards both walls where turbulent intensity is weaker compared to the bulk. In this paper, we develop a general framework for constructing higher-order, unconditionally energy-stable exponential time differencing Runge-Kutta methods applicable to a range of gradient flows. Specifically, we identify conditions sufficient for ETDRK schemes to maintain the original energy dissipation. Our analysis reveals that commonly used third-order and fourth-order ETDRK schemes fail to meet these conditions. To address this, we introduce new third-order ETDRK schemes, designed with appropriate stabilization, which satisfy these conditions and thus guarantee the unconditional energy decaying property. We conduct extensive numerical experiments with these new schemes to verify their accuracy, stability, behavior under large time steps, long-term evolution, and adaptive time stepping strategy across various gradient flows. This study is the first to examine the unconditional energy stability of high-order ETDRK methods, and we are optimistic that our framework will enable the development of ETDRK schemes beyond the third order that are unconditionally energy stable.

A new experimental setup combining X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) in the hard x-ray regime and a high-pressure sample environment is developed to monitor the pressure dependence of the internal motion of complex systems down to the atomic scale in the multi-GPa range, from room temperature to 600K. The high flux of coherent high energy x-rays at 4th generation synchrotron source solves the problems caused by the absorption of the Diamond Anvil Cells used to generate the high pressure, enabling the measurement of the intermediate scattering function over 6 orders of magnitude in time, from $10^{-3}$ s to $10^{3}$s. The constraints posed by the high-pressure generation such as the preservation of the x-ray's coherence, as well as the sample, pressure and temperature stability are discussed, and the feasibility of high pressure XPCS is demonstrated through results obtained on metallic glasses.

Under certain symmetry-breaking conditions, a superconducting system exhibits asymmetric critical currents, dubbed the ``superconducting diode effect". Recently, systems with the ideal superconducting diode efficiency or unidirectional superconductivity have received considerable interest. In this work, we report the study of Al-InAs nanowire-Al Josephson junctions under microwave irradiation and magnetic fields. We observe an enhancement of superconducting diode effect under microwave driving, featured by a horizontal offset of the zero-voltage step in the voltage-current characteristic that increases with microwave power. Devices reach the unidirectional superconductivity regime at sufficiently high driving amplitudes. The offset changes sign with the reversal of the magnetic field direction. Meanwhile, the offset magnitude exhibits a roughly linear response to the microwave power in dBm when both the power and the magnetic field are large. The signatures observed are reminiscent of a recent theoretical proposal using the resistively shunted junction (RSJ) model. However, the experimental results are not fully explained by the RSJ model, indicating a new mechanism for unidirectional superconductivity that is possibly related to non-equilibrium dynamics or dissipation in periodically driven superconducting systems.

Intelligent equipment fault diagnosis based on Federated Transfer Learning (FTL) attracts considerable attention from both academia and industry. It allows real-world industrial agents with limited samples to construct a fault diagnosis model without jeopardizing their raw data privacy. Existing approaches, however, can neither address the intense sample heterogeneity caused by different working conditions of practical agents, nor the extreme fault label scarcity, even zero, of newly deployed equipment. To address these issues, we present FedLED, the first unsupervised vertical FTL equipment fault diagnosis method, where knowledge of the unlabeled target domain is further exploited for effective unsupervised model transfer. Results of extensive experiments using data of real equipment monitoring demonstrate that FedLED obviously outperforms SOTA approaches in terms of both diagnosis accuracy (up to 4.13 times) and generality. The excitonic insulator (EI) is an exotic ground state of narrow-gap semiconductors and semimetals arising from spontaneous condensation of electron-hole pairs bound by attractive Coulomb interaction. Despite research on EIs dating back to half a century ago, their existence in real materials remains a subject of ongoing debate. In this study, through systematic experimental and theoretical investigations, we provide evidence for the existence of an EI ground state in a van der Waals compound Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$. Density-functional-theory calculations suggest that it is a semimetal with a small band overlap, whereas various experiments exhibit an insulating ground state with a clear band gap. Upon incorporating electron-hole Coulomb interaction into our calculations, we obtain an EI phase where the electronic symmetry breaking opens a many-body gap. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements exhibit that the band gap is closed with a significant change in the dispersions as the number of thermally excited charge carriers becomes sufficiently large in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium states. Structural measurements reveal a slight breaking of crystal symmetry with exceptionally small lattice distortion in the insulating state, which cannot account for the significant gap opening. Therefore, we attribute the insulating ground state with a gap opening in Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$ to exciton condensation, where the coupling to the symmetry-breaking electronic state induces a subtle change in the crystal structure., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The opening of an energy gap in the electronic structure generally indicates the presence of interactions. In materials with low carrier density and short screening length, long-range Coulomb interaction favors the spontaneous formation of electron-hole pairs, so-called excitons, opening an excitonic gap at the Fermi level. Excitonic materials host unique phenomenons associated with pair excitations. However, there is still no generally recognized single-crystal material with excitonic order, which is, therefore, awaited in condensed matter physics. Here, we show that excitonic states may exist in the quasi-one-dimensional material Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$, which has an almost ideal Dirac-like band structure, with Dirac point located exactly at Fermi level. We find that an energy gap appears at 350 K, and it grows with decreasing temperature. The spontaneous gap opening is absent in a similar material Ta$_2$Ni$_3$Te$_5$. Intriguingly, the gap is destroyed by the potassium deposition on the crystal, likely due to extra-doped carriers. Furthermore, we observe a pair of in-gap flat bands, which is an analog of the impurity states in a superconducting gap. All these observations can be properly explained by an excitonic order, providing Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$ as a new and promising candidate realizing excitonic states., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

In this paper we construct new fully decoupled and high-order implicit-explicit (IMEX) schemes for the two-phase incompressible flows based on the new generalized scalar auxiliary variable approach with optimal energy approximation (EOP-GSAV) for Cahn-Hilliard equation and consistent splitting method for Navier-Stokes equation. These schemes are linear, fully decoupled, unconditionally energy stable, only require solving a sequence of elliptic equations with constant coefficients at each time step, and provide a new technique to preserve the consistency between original energy and modified energy. We derive that numerical solutions of these schemes are uniformly bounded without any restriction on time step size. Furthermore, we carry out a rigorous error analysis for the first-order scheme and establish optimal global error estimates for the phase function, velocity and pressure in two and three-dimensional cases. It is well known since 1960s that by exploring the tensor product structure of the discrete Laplacian on Cartesian meshes, one can develop a simple direct Poisson solver with an $\mathcal O(N^{\frac{d+1}d})$ complexity in d-dimension, where N is the number of the total unknowns. The GPU acceleration of numerically solving PDEs has been explored successfully around fifteen years ago and become more and more popular in the past decade, driven by significant advancement in both hardware and software technologies, especially in the recent few years. We present in this paper a simple but extremely fast MATLAB implementation on a modern GPU, which can be easily reproduced, for solving 3D Poisson type equations using a spectral-element method. In particular, it costs less than one second on a Nvidia A100 for solving a Poisson equation with one billion degree of freedoms. We also present applications of this fast solver to solve a linear (time-independent) Schr\"odinger equation and a nonlinear (time-dependent) Cahn-Hilliard equation.

We present a novel optimization algorithm, element-wise relaxed scalar auxiliary variable (E-RSAV), that satisfies an unconditional energy dissipation law and exhibits improved alignment between the modified and the original energy. Our algorithm features rigorous proofs of linear convergence in the convex setting. Furthermore, we present a simple accelerated algorithm that improves the linear convergence rate to super-linear in the univariate case. We also propose an adaptive version of E-RSAV with Steffensen step size. We validate the robustness and fast convergence of our algorithm through ample numerical experiments., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures

For time-dependent PDEs, the numerical schemes can be rendered bound-preserving without losing conservation and accuracy, by a post processing procedure of solving a constrained minimization in each time step. Such a constrained optimization can be formulated as a nonsmooth convex minimization, which can be efficiently solved by first order optimization methods, if using the optimal algorithm parameters. By analyzing the asymptotic linear convergence rate of the generalized Douglas-Rachford splitting method, optimal algorithm parameters can be approximately expressed as a simple function of the number of out-of-bounds cells. We demonstrate the efficiency of this simple choice of algorithm parameters by applying such a limiter to cell averages of a discontinuous Galerkin scheme solving phase field equations for 3D demanding problems. Numerical tests on a sophisticated 3D Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system indicate that the limiter is high order accurate, very efficient, and well-suited for large-scale simulations. For each time step, it takes at most $20$ iterations for the Douglas-Rachford splitting to enforce bounds and conservation up to the round-off error, for which the computational cost is at most $80N$ with $N$ being the total number of cells.

With the development of quantum technology, hybrid devices that combine superconductors (S) and semiconductors (Sm) have attracted great attention due to the possibility of engineering structures that benefit from the integration of the properties of both materials. However, until now, none of the experiments have reported good control of band alignment at the interface, which determines the strength of S-Sm coupling and the proximitized superconducting gap. Here, we fabricate hybrid devices in a generic way with argon milling to modify the interface while maintaining its high quality. First, after the milling the atomically connected S-Sm interfaces appear, resulting in a large induced gap, as well as the ballistic transport revealed by the multiple Andreev reflections and quantized above-gap conductance plateaus. Second, by comparing transport measurement with Schr\"odinger-Poisson (SP) calculations, we demonstrate that argon milling is capable of varying the band bending strength in the semiconducting wire as the electrons tend to accumulate on the etched surface for longer milling time. Finally, we perform nonlocal measurements on advanced devices to demonstrate the coexistence and tunability of crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) and elastic co-tunneling (ECT) -- key ingredients for building the prototype setup for realization of Kitaev chain and quantum entanglement probing. Such a versatile method, compatible with the standard fabrication process and accompanied by the well-controlled modification of the interface, will definitely boost the creation of more sophisticated hybrid devices for exploring physics in solid-state systems., Comment: 41 pages, 16 figures

Twisted graphene multilayers are highly tunable flatband systems for developing new phases of matter. Thus far, while orbital ferromagnetism has been observed in valley polarized phases, the long-range orders of other correlated phases as well as the quantum phase transitions between different orders mostly remain unknown. Here, we report an observation of Coulomb interaction driven first-order quantum phase transitions and ferromagnetism in twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG). At zero magnetic field, the transitions are revealed in a series of step-like abrupt resistance jumps with prominent hysteresis loop when either the displacement field (D) or the carrier density (n) is tuned across symmetry-breaking boundary near half filling, indicating a formation of ordered domains. It is worth noting that the good turnability and switching of these states gives a rise to a memory performance with a large on/off ratio. Moreover, when both spin and valley play the roles at finite magnetic field, we observe abundant first-order quantum phase transitions among normal metallic states from charge neutral point, orbital ferromagnetic states from quarter filling, and spin-polarized states from half filling. We interpret these first-order phase transitions in the picture of phase separations and spin domain percolations driven by multi-field tunable Coulomb interactions, in agreement with Lifshitz transition from Hartree-Fock calculations. The observed multi-filed tunable domain structure and its hysteresis resembles the characteristics of multiferroics, revealing intriguing magnetoelectric properties. Our result enriches the correlated phase diagram in TDBG for discovering novel exotic phases and quantum phase transitions, and it would benefit other twisted moir\'e systems as well.

Edge states in topological systems have attracted great interest due to their robustness and linear dispersions. Here a superconducting-proximitized edge interferometer is engineered on a topological insulator Ta2Pd3Te5 with asymmetric edges to realize the interfering Josephson diode effect (JDE), which hosts many advantages, such as the high efficiency as much as 73% at tiny applied magnetic fields with an ultra-low switching power around picowatt, and a giant interfering magnetochiral anisotropy with a maximal coefficient gamma = 1.2 x 10^{9} T^{-1}A^{-1}. Energy-Dissipative Evolutionary Deep Operator Neural Network is an operator learning neural network. It is designed to seed numerical solutions for a class of partial differential equations instead of a single partial differential equation, such as partial differential equations with different parameters or different initial conditions. The network consists of two sub-networks, the Branch net and the Trunk net. For an objective operator G, the Branch net encodes different input functions u at the same number of sensors, and the Trunk net evaluates the output function at any location. By minimizing the error between the evaluated output q and the expected output G(u)(y), DeepONet generates a good approximation of the operator G. In order to preserve essential physical properties of PDEs, such as the Energy Dissipation Law, we adopt a scalar auxiliary variable approach to generate the minimization problem. It introduces a modified energy and enables unconditional energy dissipation law at the discrete level. By taking the parameter as a function of time t, this network can predict the accurate solution at any further time with feeding data only at the initial state. The data needed can be generated by the initial conditions, which are readily available. The concept class of low-degree polynomial threshold functions (PTFs) plays a fundamental role in machine learning. In this paper, we study PAC learning of $K$-sparse degree-$d$ PTFs on $\mathbb{R}^n$, where any such concept depends only on $K$ out of $n$ attributes of the input. Our main contribution is a new algorithm that runs in time $({nd}/{\epsilon})^{O(d)}$ and under the Gaussian marginal distribution, PAC learns the class up to error rate $\epsilon$ with $O(\frac{K^{4d}}{\epsilon^{2d}} \cdot \log^{5d} n)$ samples even when an $\eta \leq O(\epsilon^d)$ fraction of them are corrupted by the nasty noise of Bshouty et al. (2002), possibly the strongest corruption model. Prior to this work, attribute-efficient robust algorithms are established only for the special case of sparse homogeneous halfspaces. Our key ingredients are: 1) a structural result that translates the attribute sparsity to a sparsity pattern of the Chow vector under the basis of Hermite polynomials, and 2) a novel attribute-efficient robust Chow vector estimation algorithm which uses exclusively a restricted Frobenius norm to either certify a good approximation or to validate a sparsity-induced degree-$2d$ polynomial as a filter to detect corrupted samples., Comment: ICML 2023.
