13. Visible Light Triggered Drug Release from TiO2 Nanotube Arrays: A Novel Controllable Antibacterial Platform

Abstract

In this work, we use a double-layered stack of TiO2 nanotubes (TiNTs) to construct a visible-light triggered drug delivery system. Key for visible-light drug release is a hydrophobic cap on the nanotubes containing Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). The AuNPs allow for a photocatalytic scission of the hydrophobic chain under visible light. To demonstrate the principle, we loaded antibiotic (ampicillin sodium (AMP)) in the lower part of the TiO2 nanotube stack, triggered visible light induced release, and carried out antibacterial studies. The release from the platform becomes most controllable if the drug is silane-grafted in hydrophilic bottom layer for drug storage. Thus visible-light photocatalysis can also determine the release kinetics of the active drug from the nanotube wall.

Abstract

In this work, we design a TiO2 nanomembrane (TiNM) that can be used as a nanofilter platform for a selective enrichment of specific proteins. After use the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 allow to decompose unwanted remnant on the substrate and thus make the platform reusable. To construct this platform we fabricate a free-standing TiO2 nanotube array and remove the bottom oxide to form a both-end open TiNM. By pyrolysis of the natural tube wall contamination (C/TiNM), the walls become decorated with graphitic carbon patches. Owing to the large surface area, the amphiphilic nature and the charge adjustable character, this C/TiNM can be used to extract and enrich hydrophobic and charged biomolecules from solutions. Using human serum albumin (HSA) as a model protein as well as protein mixtures, we show that the composite membrane exhibits a highly enhanced loading capacity and protein selectivity and is reusable after a short UV treatment.

Abstract

In this work, we introduce a facile procedure to graft a thin graphitic C3N4 (g-C3N4) layer on aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiNT) by one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach. This provides a platform to enhance the visible-light response of TiO2 nanotubes for antimicrobial applications. The formed g- C3N4/TiNT binary nanocomposite exhibits excellent bactericidal efficiency against E. coli as a visiblelight activated antibacterial coating.

22. Animal, vegetable and mineral : an assessment of the role of benthic animals in modifying, recycling and burying organic material in sediments

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the impact of burrowing, ingestion, digestion and excretion of marine annelid worm Arenicola marina on modifying the preservation and degradation of sedimentary organic matter. This introductory chapter discusses the diagenesis of marine sediment, particularly organic matter cycling and preservation, and the general role of benthic fauna in such processes. The biology, ecology, anatomy and physiology of A. marina are also discussed. The materials and methods employed in the present study are described in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3 focuses on the impacts ofA. marina upon structural and compositional changes of bulk sedimentary organic matter, as well as sediment organic-mineral interaction, suggesting that A. marina enhances the ;.,i remineralization of organic carbon and nitrogen, induces adsorption of protein peptide onto the acidic sites ofthe minerals, and its digestive enzymes may cause conformational changes of the peptide structure. Chapters 4-5 describe and discuss the impact ofA. marina upon sedimentary lipid degradation and distribution, as well as the selectivity, metabolism and assimilation of the animal. A. marina alters the degradation rates of sedimentary lipids, which consequently affects organic matter diagenesis. The primary algal lipid signals are significantly and rapidly~ltered by the animal via a series of digestive processes. The bacterial biomarkers of the sediment, in particular, are substantially affected. Finally in Chapter 6, the summary of conclusion answers the key questions raised at the end of Chapter 1, and future works are presented. 1.2. THE GLOBAL ORGANIC CARBON CYCLE AND PRESERVATION 1.2.1. OVERVIEW The global organic carbon cycle is summarized in Figure 1.1. It is divided into two parts, the biological cycle and the geological cycle. The biological cycle starts with photosynthesis of organic matter from atmospheric carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide/bicarbonate in the surface waters of oceans or lakes. It continues through the different trophic levels of the biosphere and ends with the metabolic or chemical oxidation of decayed biomass to carbon dioxide. The geological organic carbon cycle begins with the incorporation of biogenic organic matter into sediments or soils. It then leads to the formation of natural gas, petroleum and coal or metamorphic forms of carbon, which may be reoxidized to carbon dioxide after erosion of sedimentary rocks or by combustion of fossil fuels. Inventories and stable carbon isotope mass balances indicate that the greater than 99.9% of all carbon is stored in sedimentary rocks of the Earth's crust (BERNER, 1980). About 80% of this carbon occurs within carbonates oflimestones and dolomites (HUNT, 1996). The cardioversion effect during the mid-term post-operation was better in those with a duration of AF < 2 years than those with AF ≥ 2 years (P < 0.05). The LAD reduced significantly during the early postoperative period in the MS group (P < 0.05). Compared with the early postoperative period, LAD further reduced, and the EF increased significantly during the mid-term post-operation (P< 0.05).
