2. Optimization of the Superconducting Linear Magnetic Bearing of a Maglev Vehicle

Abstract

Considering the need for cost/performance prediction and optimization of superconducting maglev vehicles, we develop and validate here a 3D finite element model to simulate superconducting linear magnetic bearings. Then we reduce the 3D model to a 2D model in order to decrease the computing time. This allows us to perform in a reasonable time a stochastic optimization considering the superconductor properties and the vehicle operation. We look for the permanent magnet guideway geometry that minimizes the cost and maximizes the lateral force during a displacement sequence, with a constraint on the minimum levitation force. The displacement sequence reproduces a regular maglev vehicle operation with both vertical and lateral movements. For the sake of comparison, our reference is the SupraTrans prototype bearing. The results of the optimization suggest that the bearing cost could be substantially reduced, while keeping the same performances as the initial design. Alternatively, the performances could be significantly improved for the same original cost.

Cylindrical geometry was used for examining the dynamic levitation force curves between a superconductor disk and a permanent magnet. Findings revealed slight discrepancy in the region with more significant hysteretic effect.

The article studies the design and testing of a flywheel energy storage system (FESS) prototype connected to the grid as real power shunt compensator. Results suggest that the prototype is capable of correctly varying the speed of the flywheel for supply/absorb of power to/from the grid.

Abstract

A complete passive magnetic bearing system, consisting in a Permanent Magnet radial bearing and a Superconductive Magnetic Bearing has been simulated and constructed. The forces in both types of magnetic bearings are not linear. The non-linear behavior has been implemented in a FEM model and compared with linear models. A spin down test has been conducted to the built system and the Eigen frequencies have been recorded. The Eigen frequencies calculated with and without the non-linear behavior implemented in the model are very similar.

Abstract

This paper presents simulations and experimental results for two types of Passive Permanent Magnet Bearings. The bearing system under investigation consists of two permanent magnet rings opposing to each other in two different configurations. The influence of parameters, such as thickness and radius of permanent magnets, in the force is presented through FEM calculations. Two setups of passive magnetic bearings have been built. Static measurements of radial and axial forces are reported and results compared with simulations. Also, dynamic tests show the behavior of the bearing and the magnitudes of force in the foothold. The results are presented to show trends in the parameters, so the conclusions are applicable for other sizes and applications. As an example, the application as a top bearing for a 12 kW vertical axis wind turbine is considered.

Abstract

In order to develop a new magnetic bearing set for a flywheel energy storage prototype, it was designed and simulated some configurations of Permanent Magnetic Bearings (PMB) and Superconducting Magnetic Bearings (SMB). The bearings were assembled with Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets and the simulations were carried out with the Finite Element Method (FEM). The PMB was designed to reduce the load on SMB and provide radial positioning of the whole set. SMB were designed with YBCO superconductors and an assembly of permanent magnets. Several configurations of permanent magnets were simulated, trying to maximize the magnetic flux gradient in direction orthogonal to the movement and flux density in the surface of the superconductors. Early experiments have shown an increasing stiffness and levitation force with increasing field gradient and intensity. It was also a goal to reduce the stray field outside the bearing. The levitation force of the SMB using a flux shapers configuration was measured and compared with FEM simulation, showing very good agreement. The simulation of a SMB using Halbach array configuration shows that it increases the levitation force and reduces the stray field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents a voltage sag compensator, which uses a flywheel energy storage system with superconducting magnetic axial thrust bearing (SMB) and a permanent magnet radial bearing (PMB). The SMB was built with Nd-Fe-B magnet and YBCO superconducting blocks, refrigerated with liquid Nitrogen. The magnets are assembled with magnetic flux shapers in order to increase the levitation force and the stiffness. The radial PMB is used to positioning the vertically arranged switched reluctance machine (SRM) used as motor/generator. Simulations of the power electronics and SRM show that the system can work up to 30,000 rpm supplying the required energy during disturbances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
