Horses are important food sources in several countries however, data on their radionuclide uptake is less available than for many other farm animals. Information on the transfer of artificial radioisotopes from the environment to the food supply is necessary for internal dose assessment and assuring the safety of the population relying on this food source. This study provides data for a less studied farm animal and, in the case of 241 Am and 239+240 Pu, relatively poorly studied radionuclides with respect to transfer to animal products. The transfer parameters for 239+240 Pu, 241 Am, 137 Cs and 90 Sr to the organs of 1-year old fillies, 10-year old mares and through the placental barrier into foetuses were quantified after 60-days feeding with contaminated soil or diet contaminated by a leachate solution. The transfer of radionuclides from ingested soil to tissues was generally lower, by up to three orders of magnitude, than from a diet contaminated by a leachate solution. The ingestion of soil is a particularly important source of radionuclide intake to grazing animals in the Semipalatinsk Test Site. For 241 Am there is a lack of available data, the two singular entries for mutton and beef in the IAEA handbook are higher than all values observed in the current study. The maximum observed transfer factor for 241 Am was 72 ± 22*10 -5  d kg -1 FW in the liver of the mare fed with leachate contaminated feed. For 239+240 Pu the maximum transfer factor was 31.8 ± 8*10 -5  d kg -1 FW observed also in the liver of the mare fed with leachate contaminated feed. The filly fed with leachate contaminated feed had the highest transfer parameter value for 137 Cs, 35.3*10 -3  d kg -1 FW. The highest 90 Sr transfer factor was found in the ribs of the filly fed leachate contaminated feed, 720 ± 144 *10 -3  d kg -1 FW. The results presented in this paper can be used to improve the current internal dose estimates from the ingestion of horse meat produced in the area, however they are based on a low sample size; future studies need to use a larger number of animals., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Strontium-90 (90Sr) is a fission product, resulting from the use of uranium and plutonium in nuclear reactors and weapons. Consequently, it may be found in the environment as a consequence of nuclear fallouts, nuclear weapon testing, and not correct waste management. When present in the environment, strontium-90 may be taken into animal body by drinking water, eating food, or breathing air. The primary health effects are bone tumors and tumors of the blood-cell forming organs, due to beta particles emitted by both 90Sr and yttrium-90 (90Y). Moreover, another health concern is represented by inhibition of calcification and bone deformities in animals. Actually, radiometric methods for the determination of 90Sr in animal bones are lacking. This article describers a radiochemical method for the determination of 90Sr in animal bones, by ultra low-level liquid scintillation counting. The method precision and trueness have been demonstrated through validation tests (CV% = 12.4%; mean recovery = 98.4%). Detection limit and decision threshold corresponding to 8 and 3 mBecquerel (Bq) kg-1, respectively, represent another strong point of this analytical procedure. This new radiochemical method permits the selective extraction of 90Sr, without interferences, and it is suitable for radiocontamination surveillance programs, and it is also an improvement with respect to food safety controls.

We studied the concentration and distribution of (137)Cs and (90)Sr in the bodies of 188 wild boar (Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758) taken near the Chernobyl site. Of these, 111 animals were taken in the Alienation Zone, 41 animals were taken in the Permanent Control Zone and 36 animals were taken in the Periodic Control Zone. The samples included muscle and bone (rib) tissues and samples of heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, spleen, genitals and skin. The weight of the samples was 0.5 kg fresh weigh. The average concentration of (137)Cs in the muscles of the wild boar found in the Alienation Zone was 46 ± 10 kBq/kg, in the Permanent Control Zone - 13 ± 3.0 kBq/kg and in the Periodic Control Zone - 0.6 ± 0.1 kBq/kg. The largest concentration of (137)Cs was detected in the muscle tissue and kidneys taken animals. In some samples of muscle tissue it reached more than 660 kBq/kg. The (137)Cs concentrations were also high in heart and spleen up 64.3 kBq/kg and 67.5 kBq/kg - animals from the Alienation Zone and 10.3-10.6 kBq/kg - animals from the Permanent Control zone. The lowest concentration of (137)Cs was found in the lungs and skin of animals. The analyses of (90)Sr concentration in the organs and tissues of the wild boar showed that (90)Sr was concentrated mainly in the bone tissue. The average level of (90)Sr concentration in bone was 17.6 kBq/kg fresh weight animals from the Alienation Zone and 13.47 kBg/kg - animals from the Permanent Control zone. A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate the water - fish transfer parameter of radiostrontium that potentially contaminate human body through water - fish - human pathway in the nuclear accident cases. In this experiment, carp fish (Cyprinus carpio), generally produced and consumed by Indonesian people, were cultured in a tank filled with 500 L water contaminated with (85)Sr for two months. The observation of fish growth and radioactivity were conducted every five days by taking up three fish and water samples. The fish were dissected and separated into muscle, bones and internally organ, then destructed using chloric acid. The fish and water samples were then measured using gamma spectrometer with HPGe detector. The transfer parameter of transfer factor (T(f)), uptake rate constant (u), elimination rate constant (k), and the effective half life (T(e)) were analyzed by mathematical equations. The high (85)Sr concentration was observed in the bone by the T(f) value of 67.99 ± 9.68 mL g(-1) wet weight, whereas the concentration in muscle and internal organ were lower with the T(f) of 26.05 ± 4.44 mL g(-1) wet weight and 16.95 ± 2.34 mL g(-1) wet weight, respectively. The values of u obtained from the mathematical calculation were 0.025 day(-1), 0.029 day(-1), and 0.04 day(-1) for bone, muscle, and internal organ, respectively. Those values were higher compared to the k values, i.e. 0.018 day(-1), 0.025 day(-1), and 0.022 day(-1) indicating the accumulation were take place in bone, muscle, and internal organ. The effective half life, which is the sum of physical and biological half life, of (85)Sr in carp was about 30 days. The transfer parameter values determined from this experiment can be used in internal radiation doses assessment through water - fish - human pathways in case of radiostrontium contamination in freshwater environment, so a recommendation can be considered relating to the fish consumption during or after radiostrontium release to the environment., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Plantings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) on a waste burial site in the Chernobyl Red Forest was shown to greatly influence the long term redistribution of radioactivity contained in sub-surfaces trenches. After 15 years of growth, aboveground biomass of the average tree growing on waste trench no.22 had accumulated 1.7 times more (137)Cs than that of trees growing off the trench, and 5.4 times more (90)Sr. At the scale of the trench and according to an average tree density of 3300 trees/ha for the study zone, tree contamination would correspond to 0.024% of the (137)Cs and 2.52% of the (90)Sr contained in the buried waste material. A quantitative description of the radionuclide cycling showed a potential for trees to annually extract up to 0.82% of the (90)Sr pool in the trench and 0.0038% of the (137)Cs. A preferential (90)Sr uptake from the deep soil is envisioned while pine roots would take up (137)Cs mostly from less contaminated shallow soil layers. The current upward flux of (90)Sr through vegetation appeared at least equal to downward loss in waste material leaching as reported by Dewiere et al. (2004, Journal of Environmental Radioactivity 74, 139-150). Using a prospective calculation model, we estimated that maximum (90)Sr cycling can be expected to occur at 40 years post-planting, resulting in 12% of the current (90)Sr content in the trench transferred to surface soils through biomass turnover and 7% stored in tree biomass. These results are preliminary, although based on accurate methodology. A more integrated ecosystem study leading to the coupling between biological and geochemical models of radionuclide cycling within the Red Forest seems opportune. Such a study would help in the adequate management of that new forest and the waste trenches upon which they reside.

Information has been complied on the fractional absorption of a range of radionuclides by adult domestic ruminants. Critical analysis of these data has enabled the derivation of recommended values for fractional absorption which will form part of the new handbook of parameter values for the prediction of radionuclide transfer in terrestrial and freshwater environments to be published by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Whilst most data considered were for caesium, strontium and iodine, values for 23 other radionuclides are also given. The recommended fractional absorption values are presented here, together with descriptions of the literature used to derive them. The values for domestic ruminants are compared with those derived by the International Commission for Radiological Protection for adult humans.

Data on radionuclide transfer to domestic chickens and ducks obtained from research performed in the former Soviet Union were reviewed to provide transfer coefficient values (Ff) to poultry and edible egg contents. The majority of the data are from experiments with (90)Sr and (137)Cs, reflecting the importance of these radionuclides after global fallout and major radiation accidents. Data for (3)H, (54)Mn, (59)Fe, (60)Co, (22)Na (65)Zn, (131)I and U are also given. The values derived have been compared with those in the current IAEA Handbook of parameter values for the prediction of radionuclide transfer in temperate environments (TRS 364) and the recent revision which incorporates the values from this paper. The Russian-language data give improved estimates for many radionuclides and the revised handbook is now based on the better quality data given for chronic administration.

The long-term behavior of (90)Sr was investigated from 1987 to 1997 in fifteen lakes in southern and central Finland following the 1986 Chernobyl accident. Both water and fish samples (perch, pike, vendace) were analyzed. (90)Sr stays long in the freshwater ecosystem; the observed half-lives during the study period were generally around 10 years in water and even longer in fish. One lake exhibited very different behavior for (90)Sr, with elevated levels in fish and water and very short observed half-life in fish, less than 2 years. Concentration factors of (90)Sr in fish (Bqkg(-1) f.w. in fish/Bqkg(-1) in water) among the studied lakes significantly correlated with both the Ca concentration and electrical conductivity of the water. More (90)Sr was transferred into fish in lakes with a low electrical conductivity and a low Ca concentration. Among other water parameters evaluated were pH, color, total nitrogen, and phosphorus.

During the coming years, a management and remediation strategy for the Chernobyl cooling pond (CP) will be implemented. Remediation options include a controlled reduction in surface water level of the cooling pond and stabilisation of exposed sediments. In terrestrial soils, fuel particles deposited during the Chernobyl accident have now almost completely disintegrated. However, in the CP sediments the majority of (90)Sr activity is still in the form of fuel particles. Due to the low dissolved oxygen concentration and high pH, dissolution of fuel particles in the CP sediments is significantly slower than in soils. After the planned cessation of water pumping from the Pripyat River to the Pond, significant areas of sediments will be drained and exposed to the air. This will significantly enhance the dissolution rate and, correspondingly, the mobility and bioavailability of radionuclides will increase with time. The rate of acidification of exposed bottom sediments was predicted on the basis of acidification of similar soils after liming. Using empirical equations relating the fuel particle dissolution rate to soil and sediment pH allowed prediction of fuel particle dissolution and (90)Sr mobilisation for different remediation scenarios. It is shown that in exposed sediments, fuel particles will be almost completely dissolved in 15-25 years, while in parts of the cooling pond which remain flooded, fuel particle dissolution will take about a century.

The radiological assessment of the impact of nuclear weapon's testing on the Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS) on the local population requires comprehensive site-specific information on radionuclide behaviour in the environment. However, information on radionuclide behaviour in the conditions of the STS is rather sparse and, in particular, there are no data in the literature on parameters of radionuclide transfer from feed to horse products proofed to be important contributors to the internal dose to the local population. The transfer of 137Cs and 90Sr to horse milk and meat was studied under laboratory and field conditions: in controlled experiment with three lactating horses maintained in the Kazakh Agricultural Research Institute, and in field measurements of horse products taken from horses grazing at the Semipalatinsk Test Site. The equilibrium transfer factors from feed to horse milk and meat were estimated to be 0.012 dl(-1) and 0.035 dkg(-1) for (137)Cs and 0.0022 dl(-1) and 0.003 dkg(-1) for (90)Sr, respectively. The biological half-lives were approximated by a sum of two exponentials amounting to 3 (85%) and 15 (15%) days for 137Cs and 3.5 (70%) and 100 (30%) days for 90Sr. The highest 137Cs transfer has been found to be to spleen, followed by lung, heart, muscles, kidneys, intestine, and finally skin and bones. For90Sr, the maximum activity concentration was observed in bones; contamination of other tissues is rather uniform except for liver and intestine with a factor of about 2 higher than muscles.

Transfer factors of (137)Cs and (90)Sr from contaminated soil (Aridisol) to olive, apricot trees and grape vines were determined under irrigated field conditions for four successive years. The transfer factors (calculated as Bqkg(-1) dry plant material per Bqkg(-1) dry soil) of both radionuclides varied among tree parts and were highest in olive and apricot fruits. However, the values for (90)Sr were much higher than those for (137)Cs in all plant parts. The geometric mean of the transfer factors in olives, apricots and grapes were 0.007, 0.095 and 0.0023 for (137)Cs and 0.093, 0.13 and 0.08 for (90)Sr, respectively, and were negligible in olive oil for both radionuclides. The transfer factors of both radionuclides were similar to, or in the lower limits of, those obtained in other areas of the world. This could be attributed to differences in soil characteristics: higher pH, lower organic matter, high clay content, and higher exchangeable potassium and calcium.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements of tooth enamel can be used as an individual biological dosimeter for external dose assessment. However, the presence of 90Sr in the tooth tissues makes the task of interpreting EPR tooth dosimetry more complicated. The determination of the dose contribution of incorporated 90Sr in calcified tissue to the total dose measured by EPR is one of the main aspects of correct interpretation of EPR tooth dosimetry. In this work, experimental and numerical calculations were performed to convert the measured beta-particle dose rate to 90Sr concentration in calcified tissue. The cumulative beta-particle dose was measured by exposing artificially contaminated dentin and enamel to thin-layer alpha-Al2O3:C detectors in two different exposure geometries. Numerical calculations were performed for experimental exposure conditions using calculations of electron transport and secondary photons [Monte Carlo n-Particle Transport code version 4C2 (MCNP)]. Numerical calculations were performed to optimize the sample size and exposure geometry. The applicability of two different exposure conditions to be used in routine analysis was tested. Comparison of the computational and experimental results demonstrated very good agreement.

The stable Sr content in the aboveground parts of rice plants at various growth stages, and the distributions of 90Sr and stable Sr in rice plant components, such as polished rice, rice bran, hull, straw and root, at harvest time, were determined. The total Sr content in the aboveground rice plants was dependent on the growth stage and followed the sigmoidal shape of the growth curve. The concentration of 90Sr among the different components of rice plants varied within two orders of magnitude, whereas the 90Sr/Sr concentration ratio had a constant value. Therefore, the translocation rate of 90Sr in rice plants had similar values to that of stable Sr. However, the 90Sr/Sr concentration ratio for the rice plants was different for each study site. Only 0.6% of the total Sr was found in polished rice, while more than 99% was found in the non-edible components, of which 87% was present in the straw. These findings suggest that 90Sr in the non-edible parts could have been transferred to humans through the soil-plant system and/or feed-livestock pathway. The soil-to-plant transfer factor of 90Sr in polished rice was 0.0021 +/- 0.00007, which was two orders of magnitude lower than that in the straw. The percentage of 90Sr removed from the upper soil layer to the aboveground biomass of rice plants at harvest time was calculated as 0.094%. It is possible that approximately 0.1% of the total 90Sr content in the surface soil layer is removed from the soil-plant system by human activities every year.

In order to study the plant uptake and downward migration of radiostrontium and radiocesium deposited on to a flooded rice field, 85Sr and 137Cs were applied to the standing water over an acidic sandy soil in planted lysimeters. The plant uptake was quantified with the areal transfer factor (TFa, m2 kg(-1)-dry plant). Following the spiking 14 days after transplanting, the TFa values for the hulled seeds were 3.9 x 10(-4) for 85Sr and 1.4 x 10(-4) for 137Cs, whereas those for the straws were 1.3 x 10(-2) and 3.2 x 10(-4), respectively. The 137Cs TFa from the spiking at the anthesis/milky-ripe stage was several times higher than that from the earlier spiking, whereas the difference was much less in the 85Sr TFa. Such an increase in the 137Cs TFa was attributed mainly to an enhanced plant-base uptake. The addition of KCl and lime after the spiking significantly reduced the TFa values of both radionuclides. The reducing effect was greater for the later spiking. An appreciable fraction of the applied activity leached out of the lysimeter for 85Sr, whereas a negligible fraction leached for 137Cs. The leaching was remarkably increased by the KCl and lime addition for both. A conspicuous localization of 137Cs with respect to the soil surface was observed. In a batch experiment, the 137Cs concentration in the standing water decreased more rapidly than that of 85Sr, both of which were fitted to the power functions of the elapsed time. To add KCl and lime slowed such decreases to lessen the distribution coefficients (Kd) of both 85Sr and 137Cs.

This work is aimed at quantifying foliar transfer of cesium, strontium, barium and tellurium under the influence of rainfall characteristics (intensity, frequency and time elapsed between contamination and first rainfall). Grassland boxes were contaminated by dry deposition of multi-element aerosols of (137)Cs, (85)Sr, (133)Ba and (123m)Te. They were grown in a greenhouse under controlled conditions. The treatments consisted of mowing and applying rainfalls (8 and 30 mmh(-1)) at different times after the contamination. At a leaf area index of 5.9+/-1.9, interception of the aerosols was similar for the 4 radionuclides (83.8+/-5.9%). Dew produced significant radionuclide accumulation in the base of the vegetation and transfer to the soil. For moderate intensity, an early (2 days after contamination) first rainfall was as efficient, in terms of leaf wash-off, as a longer rainfall occurring later (6 days after contamination). For early rainfalls, eliminated activities were comparable because the influence of rain intensity was compensated by rain duration. However, for late rainfalls, wash-off efficiency increased with rainfall intensity. Total transfer factors (TTF) were determined on whole grass immediately after 4 rainfalls and at harvest. After 4 medium intensity rainfalls, rain frequency did not influence total transfer factors (TTF) of strontium, barium and tellurium (about 0.2, 0.3 and 0.35 Bq kg(fresh weight)(-1) by Bq m(-2), respectively). Cesium TTF value was lower in the case of a weekly rain (0.1 against 0.2 Bq kg(fresh weight)(-1) by Bqm(-2)). TTF values were similar for twice-a-week rainfalls, whatever their intensity. They were higher for weekly rains of high intensity (between 0.3 and 0.75 Bq kg(fresh weight)(-1) by Bqm(-2) against 0.1-0.35 Bq kg(fresh weight)(-1) by Bq m(-2), depending on the radionuclides). TTF values attested that wash-off was more efficient when rainfalls lasted longer. Field loss on the top of the leaves was well described by an offset exponential model. The half-lives varied with rainfall characteristics from 4 days for cesium, strontium and barium to 20 days for tellurium. The offset value varied between 0% for tellurium (high intensity rainfalls) and 14% for cesium (medium intensity rainfalls).

Parameters related to 90Sr mobility in the soil-plant system are reported: exchangeable content, selectivity coefficient, and transfer factor. Large mobility of 90Sr in different soil types was shown. The fraction of exchangeable 90Sr varied between 70 and 90%. The selectivity coefficient K(C)(90Sr/Ca) values were in the range 1.3-2.5. The radionuclide transfer factors (TF) varied by a factor of 9.6 for barley seedlings and by a factor of 6.6 for lupine seedlings. The exchangeable Ca content was the determinant soil parameter responsible for differences in 90Sr biological availability. A static model was devised that describes 90Sr sorption from soil solution by soil and on the root surface. The parameter of 90Sr bioavailability (A) has been suggested. Parameter A was calculated from data on soil exchangeable Ca content and 90Sr mobility indicators--exchangeable fraction of the radionuclide and the selectivity coefficient K(C)(90Sr/Ca). A correlation was found between TF and parameter A.

In this paper a study of the foliar uptake and translocation of 134Cs and 85Sr in a herbaceous fruit plant is presented. In particular, absorption, translocation and loss of these radionuclides in strawberry plants have been studied in relation to the age of contaminated leaves. Strawberry plants were contaminated by distributing droplets of an aqueous solution containing 134CsCl and 85SrCl2 on the surface of two leaves per plant. One half of the plants was contaminated through two young leaves, a second half through two old leaves. Sets of plants were collected 1 day, 7 days and 15 days after contamination. One half of them was rinsed with double distilled water before gamma analysis. Rinsing contaminated leaves removes on average 55% of the applied 134Cs and 45% of 85Sr. The activity removed decreases during the 15 days of the experimental study, both for 134Cs and for 85Sr, suggesting an increase in foliar absorption during this period. The activity removed does not differ between old and young leaves. "External loss" is lower for young than old contaminated leaves. "Internal loss" through translocation occurs mainly for 134Cs. Translocation coefficients from contaminated leaves to fruits are two orders of magnitude higher for 134Cs (4.0%), than for 85Sr (0.05%). Leaf to fruit translocation coefficients for 134Cs are higher from young leaves (5.8%), than from old leaves (2.3%).

Measurements of soil-to-plant transfer of (134)Cs, (85)Sr and (65)Zn from two tropical red earth soils ('Blain' and 'Tippera') to sorghum and mung crops have been undertaken in the north of Australia. The aim of the study was to identify factors that control bioaccumulation of these radionuclides in tropical regions, for which few previous data are available. Batch sorption experiments were conducted to determine the distribution coefficient (K(d)) of the selected radionuclides at pH values similar to natural pH values, which ranged from about 5.5 to 6.7. In addition, K(d) values were obtained at one pH unit above and below the soil-water equilibrium pH values to determine the effect of pH. The adsorption of Cs showed no pH dependence, but the K(d) values for the Tippera soils (2300-4100 ml/g) exceeded those for the Blain soils (800-1200 ml/g) at equilibrium pH. This was related to the greater clay content of the Tippera soil. Both Sr and Zn were more strongly adsorbed at higher pH values, but the K(d) values showed less dependence on the soil type. Strontium K(d)s were 30-60 ml/g whilst Zn ranged from 160 to 1630 ml/g for the two soils at equilibrium pH. With the possible exception of Sr, there was no evidence for downward movement of radionuclides through the soils during the course of the growing season. There was some evidence of surface movement of labelled soil particles. Soil-to-plant transfer factors varied slightly between the soils. The average results for sorghum were 0.1-0.3 g/g for Cs, 0.4-0.8 g/g for Sr and 18-26 g/g for Zn (dry weight) with the initial values relating to Blain and the following values to Tippera. Similar values were observed for the mung bean samples. The transfer factors for Cs and Sr were not substantially different from the typical values observed in temperate studies. However, Zn transfer factors for plants grown on both these tropical soils were greater than for soils in temperate climates (by more than an order of magnitude). This may be related to trace nutrient deficiency and/or the growth of fungal populations in these soils. The results indicate that transfer factors depend on climatic region together with soil type and chemistry and underline the value of specific bioaccumulation data for radionuclides in tropical soils.

According to the soil-to-plant transfer concept generally used in dose assessment modeling, the plant uptake of a radionuclide should depend linearly on its concentration in the soil. In order to validate this concept for (90)Sr in a semi-natural ecosystem, plant and soil samples were taken at 100 plots of a 100 x 100 m(2) area within an alpine pasture near Berchtesgaden, Germany. At three plots, the vertical distribution of (90)Sr in the soil was determined in addition. A statistically significant correlation between the soil and plant concentration of (90)Sr was not detectable (Spearman correlation coefficient R=-0.116, p>0.05) within the range of the Sr-concentration covered (15-548 Bq kg(-1) dry soil and 17-253 Bq kg(-1) dry plant material). Thus, the prerequisite of the soil-to-plant transfer concept was not fulfilled for (90)Sr at this site. Organic carbon and total nitrogen were also determined in the soil samples. Both elements were highly correlated (R=0.912, p<0.001), their ratio being C/N=10.9+/-0.7. While C was positively correlated with the (90)Sr concentrations in the soil (R=0.342, p<0.001), negative correlations were observed for the plant concentrations (R=-0.286, p<0.01) and the concentration ratios (R=-0.444, p<0.001) of (90)Sr. These results are compared with those recently obtained for (137)Cs by Bunzl et al. (J Environ Radioactiv 48 (2000) 145).

The paper outlines the results of the ECOMOD model application to simulate 90Sr dynamics in fish dwelling in Southern Ural lakes and contaminated as a result of the Kyshtym accident. The detailed reconstruction of 90Sr behavior in fish for the 40-year period (1957-1997) was made for the most contaminated lakes (Uruskul and Berdenish). The adapted ECOMOD model was applied for the other 14 Ural lakes to explain the peculiarities in 90Sr accumulation by fish in lakes with different concentrations of Ca2+ ions in lake water.

This paper compares predictions of the foodchain model SPADE with experimental data for the transfer of (134)Cs and (85)Sr to strawberry plants following acute foliar and soil contamination. The transfer pathways considered in this exercise included direct deposition to fruit, leaf-to-fruit, soil-to-leaf and soil-to-fruit transfers. Following foliar contamination, the difference between predicted and measured radionuclide activity values varied between a factor of 0.5-10 for fruit and 4.5-7 for leaf. Following soil contamination, the difference between predicted and measured values varied between a factor of 3-74 for fruit and 32-44 for leaf. In all cases the difference between measured and predicted values was smaller for (85)Sr than (134)Cs. Measured and predicted activities were higher for leaf than fruit. Both measured and predicted (134)Cs concentrations in fruit and leaf are higher when deposition occurs at ripening than at anthesis. These results confirm the need for more data on fruit, even for Cs and Sr, to support models in predicting the transfer of radionuclides to fruit crops. Ongoing research projects funded by the UK Food Standards Agency aim to provide some data on radionuclide transfer to herbaceous, shrub and tree fruits, which will help improve radiological assessment models in order to provide better protection for consumers.

This paper presents results on the calibration and validation of a model (Ventomod) for leaf to fruit transfer of (134)Cs, (85)Sr and (65)Zn in processing tomato plants after leaf contamination. Several models (e.g. FARMLAND) that deal specifically with the transfer of radionuclides to fruits are adaptations of models that were developed for agricultural crops such as leafy green vegetables. "Ventomod" represents a dynamic evaluation model exclusively built for the short-term behaviour of radionuclide depositions. It forecasts the level of radionuclide contamination in ripe processing tomato fruits following an accidental radionuclide release into the atmosphere. A validation of the developed model by data sets from an independent experiment showed that the model successfully reproduced the observed radionuclide distribution and dynamics in tomato fruits. The level of uncertainty was within the normal range of similar assessment models. For a more general use of this model further testing with independent data sets from experiments obtained under different environmental conditions and data from other horticulturally important plant species would be desirable.

Agricultural areas in middle and northern parts of Sweden were contaminated with radionuclides after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. Alternative crops in these areas are biomass plantations with fast-growing Salix clones for energy purposes. The uptake and internal distribution of 137Cs and 90Sr in Salix viminalis were studied. Plants were grown in microplots under field conditions. The soils in the experimental site had been contaminated in 1961 with 35.7 and 13.4 MBq m(-2) of 137Cs and 90Sr, respectively. The experiment was carried out during three years. The plots were fertilised with 60 kg N ha(-1) and three treatments of K, consisting of 0, 80 and 240 kg K ha(-1) during the first two years. The activity concentration of 137Cs in the different plant parts varied between 140 and 20,000 Bq kg(-1) and was ranked in the following order: lowest in stems < cuttings < leaves < roots. The fine roots (0-1 mm) had the highest 137Cs activity concentration. One-year-old stems had higher 137Cs activity concentrations than two-year-old stems. The activity concentration of 137Cs in the plants was significantly affected by K-supply and was higher in the 0 kg K treatment than in the 80 or 240kg K treatment. Leaves contained more 90Sr than stems and cuttings.

Foliar absorption of resuspended 90Sr, root uptake and contamination adhering to leaf surfaces (i.e. soil loading) were compared at two Chernobyl-contaminated sites, Chistogalovka and Polesskoye. Although foliar absorption of resuspended 90Sr was quantifiable, its contribution amounted to less than 10% of the plants' total, above-ground contamination. Root uptake was 200 times greater than foliar absorption at the near-field site of Chistogalovka and eight times greater at Polesskoye, where the fallout consisted of the more soluble condensation-type, rather than fuel particles. Strontium's bioavailability exceeded that of 137Cs (analyzed in the same plants) by orders of magnitude when compared using concentration ratios. Simplistic, cumulative effective dose calculations for humans ingesting 90Sr- and 137Cs-contaminated plants revealed that the dose at Chistogalovka was greater from 90Sr (185 mSv vs. 3 mSv from 137Cs), while at Polesskoye the dose from 137Cs (66 mSv) was 30 times greater than from 90Sr (2 mSv).

In case of an accident at a nuclear power plant with liberation of radioactive material into the atmosphere, knowledge about the behavior of plant species when in contact with radionuclides is indispensable for safety reasons. The leaf-fruit translocation is an important route through which agricultural products are contaminated by radionuclides. To quantify the leaf-fruit translocation factors for 137Cs and 90Sr in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) an experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with a randomized block design. 137Cs activity was determined by gamma-ray spectrometry, while chemical separation followed by beta counting of 90Y was used for 90Sr determination. The model applied for translocation indicated functional dependence between the moment of tracer application and the physiological development of the bean plant. Translocation factors obtained for 137Cs and 90Sr were 0.16 and less than 0.005, respectively.

The results of an experimental study on the behaviour of 134Cs, 85Sr and 65Zn in processing tomato plants grown in peat substrate are presented. Plants were contaminated by wet deposition of 134Cs, 85Sr and 65Zn, either by sprinkling the above ground part at two phenological stages or by administering 134Cs, 85Sr and 65Zn to the soil. The plants contaminated at the second phenological stage intercepted 38.3% less than those contaminated at the first stage, although leaf area increased by more than double. Transfer coefficients from peat soil to ripe fruit for 134Cs are significantly higher than those for 85Sr and 65Zn. Leaf to fruit transfer coefficients for 134Cs are one order of magnitude higher than for 65Zn and two orders higher than for 85Sr. Only when deposition affects fruits, as at the second phenological stage, are transfer coefficients to fruits similar for the three radionuclides.

The effect of temperature on the uptake kinetics of strontium (Sr) in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) was studied in vivo, exposing pre-acclimated fish to a wide range of Sr concentrations in water (Sr(total)=0.2-10,000 microM; Ca(total)=348 microM) at 10, 20, 25 and 30 degrees C. Sr uptake rates were determined in the whole body, gills and blood of the fish after an exposure period of 3 h and were analyzed as a function of the free-ion activity of Sr and Ca in water. The uptake of Sr(2+) by the whole body, gills and blood increased with temperature and showed saturation kinetics with the increase of Sr(2+) activity. Analyzing the observed uptake rates with a Michaelis-Menten type model showed that the kinetic parameters (J(max), K(m) and K(i)) for both Sr(2+) and its analogue Ca(2+) are temperature dependent. Thermodynamic analysis of the temperature effects indicates that the Arrhenius activation energies (E(a)) required for Sr(2+) uptake (91.9 kJ mol(-1)) and Ca(2+) uptake (105.9 kJ mol(-1)) in the whole body of carp were constant over the temperature range 10-25 degrees C and showed a break in the Arrhenius plots above this temperature. The Arrhenius plot for the Sr(2+) uptake in blood was similar to that for the whole body uptake with an E(a) of 98.1 kJ mol(-1). However, the E(a) for Sr(2+) uptake in gills was much smaller and constant (58.1 kJ mol(-1)) over the temperature range of 10-30 degrees C. For a temperature change from 10 to 25 degrees C, the Q(10) for Sr(2+) uptake in whole fish, gills and blood were 3.71, 2.29 and 4.05, respectively. Compared with Ca(2+) uptake, Sr(2+) uptake appears to require a lower activation energy for transport across the solution body interface in carp. The similar pattern of Arrhenius plots and magnitude of activation energies for Sr(2+) uptake both in blood and whole fish suggest that the uptake into the blood across the basolateral membrane is the rate-limiting energy barrier and hence dictates the overall uptake rate of Sr(2+) in whole fish.

The aim of the present study was to determine the forms of 137Cs, 90Sr and 239,240Pu occurring in different soil horizons using sequential extraction of samples taken from four sites located along a pollution gradient from the copper-nickel smelter at Monchegorsk in the Kola Peninsula, Russia, and from a reference site in Finnish Lapland in 1997. A selective sequential-leaching procedure was employed using a modification of the method of Tessier, Cambell and Bisson ((1979). Analytical Chemistry, 51, 844-851). For 137Cs the organic (O) and uppermost mineral (E1) layer were studied, for 90Sr and 239,240Pu only the uppermost organic layer (Of). The fraction of 137Cs occurring in readily exchangeable form in the organic layer was about 50% at the reference site and decreased as a function of pollution, being 15% at the most polluted site in the Kola Peninsula. There was a clear positive correlation in the O layer between the distance from the smelter and the percentage of 137Cs extracted in the readily exchangeable fraction (Spearman correlation rsp = 0.7805, p = 0.0001), whereas in the E1 layer no correlation was evident. The distribution of 90Sr in the Of layer was similar at all sites, with the highest amounts occurring in exchangeable form and bound to organic matter, whereas stable Sr showed a somewhat different distribution with the highest amount in the oxide fraction. Most of the 239,240Pu was bound to organic matter. Chemical pollution affected the exchangeable fraction of 239,240Pu, which was about 1% at the most polluted site and 4-6% at the other sites.

The effectiveness of a set of soil- and plant-based countermeasures to reduce 137Cs and 90Sr transfer to plants was tested in natural meadows in the area affected by Chernobyl fallout. Countermeasures comprised the use of agricultural practices (disking + ploughing, liming and NPK fertilisation), addition of soil amendments and reseeding with a selection of grass species. Disking + ploughing was the most effective treatment, whereas the K fertiliser doses applied were insufficient to produce a significant increase in K concentration in soil solution. The application of some agricultural practices was economically justifiable for scenarios with a high initial transfer, such as 137Cs-contaminated organic soils. The use of soil amendments did not lead to a further decrease in transfer. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that this was because of their low radionuclide sorption properties. Finally, experiments examining the effect of plant species on radionuclide transfer showed that both transfer and biomass can depend on the plant species, indicating that those with high radionuclide root uptake should be avoided when reseeding after ploughing.

Long-lived artificial radionuclides (137Cs, 90Sr) were studied in a Eucalyptus plantation located in the south-west of Spain. Radionuclide concentrations were determined in different types of samples corresponding to specific forest components (soil, trees, herbs and litter). Depth profile distributions were obtained in two selected core soils. Two layers were separately measured in three other cores. The concentration factor, defined as the ratio between the mean activity concentration in a component and the mean activity concentration in the soil, was calculated for each component. The biomass of different components was estimated in order to evaluate the total density concentration (Bq/ha) of the artificial radionuclides (137Cs, 90Sr) in the Eucalyptus plantation. The transfer of the radionuclides between the different forest components can be inferred from the results. Additionally, other naturally occurring radionuclides (40K, 226Ra, 228Ra, 228Ac) were determined for comparison. Transport of radionuclides from forest to a nearby pulp mill is also discussed.

Soils contaminated with radionuclides, particularly 137Cs and 90Sr, pose a long-term radiation hazard to human health through exposure via the foodchain and other pathways. Remediation of radionuclide-contaminated soils has become increasingly important. Removal of the contaminated surface soil (often up to 40 cm) or immobilization of radionuclides in soils by applying mineral and chemical amendments are physically difficult and not likely cost-effective in practicality. Reducing plant uptake of radionuclides, especially 137CS and 90Sr by competitive cations contained in chemical fertilizers has the general advantage in large scale, low-level contamination incidents on arable land, and has been widely practiced in central and Western Europe after the Chernobyl accident. Phytoextraction of radionuclides by specific plant species from contaminated sites has rapidly stimulated interest among industrialists as well as academics, and is considered to be a promising bio-remediation method. This paper examines the existing remediation approaches and discusses phytoextraction of radionuclides from contaminated soils in detail.

The decay characteristics of 90Sr-90Y ensure that the mother and daughter nuclides exist in radioactive equilibrium, unless they get discriminated on the basis of their chemical properties, as it happens during metabolism. Although bone is the ultimate organ of deposition, the two nuclides arrive at this target organ over different biokinetic pathways. As 90Y is not excreted, it goes through transient deposition in the liver before being secondarily deposited in bone. This leads to a temporary radioactive excess of 90Y in bone. Since the decay energy of 90Y is by a factor of about 4 higher than that of 90Sr, the initial radiation burden to the bone marrow is primarily due to 90Y. This was estimated in rats by implanting LiF thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD) in the marrow cavity of the femur. By calibrating the TLD against a known source of 90Sr-90Y, the absorbed dose rates and cumulative doses were determined as a function of time after incorporation. Two routes of administration were employed and their influence on the radiation burden is also shown.

Unlabelled: 89SrCl2 is currently used as a palliative treatment for painful osseous metastases associated with an osteoblastic reaction in bone. However, the underlying biologic mechanism by which 89SrCl2 accumulates at these lesions and mediates palliation remains unclear. The aim of this study was therefore to elucidate this mechanism., Methods: An in vitro cell biologic model, incorporating the MC3T3-E1 murine osteoblast cell line, was established to replicate the process of collagen production and mineralization. Experiments were performed to investigate the cellular association of 89SrCl2 and 45CaCl2 with both MC3T3-E1 cells and the PC-3 human prostate adenocarcinoma cell line., Results: No evidence of intracellular localization of 89SrCl2 or 45CaCl2 was found for either cell line. Localization of radiolabel was seen to be associated with MC3T3-E1 cells but only in cultures that had undergone both differentiation and mineralization. The association of 89SrCl2 was inhibited by the alkaline phosphatase inhibitor levamisole, and extracellular localization of 89SrCl2 was confirmed by microautoradiography., Conclusion: 89SrCl2 acts as a calcium mimic and, as such, becomes associated with the collagen matrix produced by the MC3T3-E1 cells during collagen mineralization.

A model for the transfer of radiostrontium (90Sr) in dairy goats is presented. The novel feature of the model is that it is based on the current understanding of Ca metabolism and assumes that the transfer of radiostrontium is driven by Ca transfer. Previously published models of radiostrontium transfer in animals have ignored the influence of Ca metabolism. Unknown model parameters were obtained by fitting the model to data from a study of radiostrontium and Ca transfer in goats. The model accounted for 95 and 97% of the observed variation in the data for Ca (n = 22) and radiostrontium (n = 43), respectively. Unlike previously reported models, the model presented here could be applied to simulate the effect of additional dietary Ca as a countermeasure to the contamination of milk by radiostrontium under different circumstances.

Skeletal uptake and retention of graded doses of ingested or injected 90Sr and injected 226Ra have been studied in 863 beagles; measurements of skeletal burden were made up to a maximum lifetime of 18.5 years. Doses ranged from 0 in 162 controls to levels that markedly reduced life span. Skeletal uptake of the administered doses averaged 2 to 2.3% for 90Sr fed to 388 beagles from midgestation to age 540 days, 33 to 35% for 45 dogs that were given single intravenous injections of 90Sr at age 540 days, and 37 to 45% for 226Ra given in eight fortnightly intravenous injections to 253 dogs from age 435 to 540 days. Skeletal retention was evaluated from the time when uptake ended until death, which occurred, on the average, at 14 to 14.5 years for the lower levels. Simple two-parameter power functions of the form SB(t) = at-b, with SB the skeletal burden, t the time after beginning of intake, and a and b fitted parameters, but corrected for radioactive decay, were used to describe the whole-skeleton retention of deposited 90Sr or 226Ra, as well as in 17 skeletal subgroups. The negative logarithmic slope, b, of these power functions for whole skeleton was about the same for both 90Sr and 226Ra, with an average value of 0.30 +/- 0.05 SD, indicating a common clearance mechanism. The lifetime average cumulative absorbed dose to irradiated skeleton varied from 0.38 to 107 Gy for beta rays in the 90Sr studies and from 0.94 to 167 Gy for alpha particles in the 226Ra studies. Daily dose rates to the skeleton for singly injected 90Sr fell rapidly after injection and declined to about 10% of the peak values late in life. Rates declined more slowly to 40-50% of peak values in other treatment groups. The time-weighted average dose rate for fed 90Sr and injected 226Ra was a robust measure that declined only about 20% late in life compared to peak values. The lifetime average dose rate varied from 0.08 to 133 mGy day-1 for the 90Sr studies and from 0.21 to 162 mGy day-1 for the 226Ra studies. Lifetime doses to mandible and cervical vertebrae for the intermediate dose levels of fed 90Sr were calculated to be about 40% higher than the skeletal average.

Strontium-89 radiotherapy is becoming an important treatment in the palliation of bone pain from osteoblastic metastases. The absorbed dose delivered to bone metastases during 89Sr radiotherapy has been estimated in four patients with metastatic prostatic carcinoma. Patients were injected with a tracer dose of 85Sr-chloride. Blood and urine samples were obtained during the week following injection. Strontium-85 scintigrams of metastases and normal bone were obtained up to 8 wk postinjection. Half of the patients showed elevated whole-body retention; plasma-strontium concentrations were decreased from normal values. Uptake of strontium in metastases was 2-25 times that in normal bone but rates of washout of strontium from metastases were similar to those from normal bone. Absorbed doses delivered in infinite time to the metastases by 89Sr ranged from 21 +/- 4 to 231 +/- 56 cGy/MBq with a median value of 68 cGy/MBq. Doses to red marrow were less by a factor of 2 to 50. These absorbed doses are sufficiently large to be expected to produce a therapeutic benefit.

Bone formation and resorption have been measured in patients with idiopathic osteoporosis by histomorphometry of 7.5-mm trephine biopsies and in the whole body by 85Sr radiotracer methodology and calcium balances. The studies were synchronized and most were preceded by double in vivo tetracycline labeling. Correlations between histological and kinetic bone formation indices were better when better when based on the extent of double tetracycline labels than on measurements of osteoid by visible light microscopy. Correction of the kinetic data for long-term exchange, using 5 months' serial whole body counting of retained 85Sr, improved the fit of the kinetic to the histological data. A statistical analysis of the measurement uncertainties showed that the residual scatter in the best correlations (between exchange-corrected bone formation rates and double-labeled osteoid surface indices) could be attributed to measurement imprecision alone. The exchange-corrected resorption rate correlated fairly well with iliac trabecular resorption surfaces, and using a volume referent rather than a surface referent for the histological index improved the statistical fit when patients with therapeutically accelerated bone turnover were included. A much better correlation was obtained by including osteoid volume acting as an independent predictor of bone resorption in a bivariate regression with a resorption surface index. The residual errors could then be accounted for by known measurement uncertainties. Whereas osteoid taking a double label closely predicted the kinetic rate of bone formation, further analysis suggested that osteoid that took no label or a single label was more closely related to bone resorption, presumably as a secondary result of the coupling of bone formation to bone resorption. The idea that continued bone loss in some patients is associated with defective osteoblastic bone formation is supported by the low rates found in some patients by both techniques. Heuristically these studies validate both in vivo tetracycline labeling for dynamic histomorphometry and corrections for long-term exchange in kinetic studies of bone formation, providing a quantitative framework for the design and analysis of future studies of bone remodeling in the osteoporoses.
