1. Experimental results, integrated model validation, and economic aspects of agrivoltaic systems at northern latitudes

Abstract

Agrivoltaic systems, which allow the coexistence of crop and electricity production on the same land, are an integrated water–energy–food nexus solution that allows the simultaneous attainment of conflicting Sustainable Development Goals. This study aims to analyse experimental results on the responses of ley grass yield and quality to shadings in the first agrivoltaic system in Sweden. It also aims to validate an integrated modelling platform for assessing agrivoltaic systems' performances before installation. An economic analysis is carried out to compare the profitability of agrivoltaic versus conventional ground-mounted photovoltaic systems and, using a Monte Carlo Analysis, to identify the parameters that most affect the profitability. Despite the agrivoltaic systems’ supporting structures and photovoltaic modules producing an average ∼25% reduction in photosynthetically active radiation at ground level, no statistically significant difference was observed between the yield of the samples under the agrivoltaic system compared to the yield of the samples in the reference area. The agrivoltaic system attained land equivalent ratios of 1.27 and 1.39 in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The validation results of the integrated modelling platform show that the sub-model concerning the crop yield response to shading conditions tends to underestimate ∼7% the actual average crop yield under the agrivoltaic system. The results of the economic analysis show that, from a net present value perspective, agrivoltaic systems have a profitability that is ∼30 times higher than a conventional crop rotation in Sweden.

Abstract

Here, cell wall of a zygomycete fungus, Rhizopus delemar, grown on bread waste was wet spun into monofilaments. Using the whole cell wall material omits the common chitosan isolation and purification steps and leads to higher material utilization. The fungal cell wall contained 36.9% and 19.7% chitosan and chitin, respectively. Solid state NMR of the fungal cell wall material confirmed the presence of chitosan, chitin, and other carbohydrates. Hydrogels were prepared by ultrafine grinding of the cell wall, followed by addition of lactic acid to protonate the amino groups of chitosan, and subsequently wet spun into monofilaments. The monofilament inhibited the growth of Bacillus megaterium (Gram+ bacterium) and Escherichia coli (Gram- bacterium) significantly (92.2% and 99.7% respectively). Cytotoxicity was evaluated using an in vitro assay with human dermal fibroblasts, indicating no toxic inducement from exposure of the monofilaments. Abstract

The fungus Rhizopus delemar was grown on bread waste in a submerged cultivation process and wet-laid into films. Alkali or enzyme treatments were used to isolate the fungal cell wall. A heat treatment was also applied to deactivate biological activity of the fungus. Homogenization of fungal biomass was done by an iterative ultrafine grinding process. Finally, the biomass was cast into films by a wet-laid process. Ultrafine grinding resulted in densification of the films. Fungal films showed tensile strengths of up to 18.1 MPa, a Young's modulus of 2.3 GPa and a strain at break of 1.4%. Highest tensile strength was achieved using alkali treatment, with SEM analysis showing a dense and highly organized structure. In contrast, less organized structures were obtained using enzymatic or heat treatments. A cell viability assay and fluorescent staining confirmed the biocompatibility of the films. Abstract

Aim: It is often a practical question whether to continue with the rest study after termination of a fairly normal stress myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS), in particular for physicians with limited experience. The purpose of this study was to analyze the value of using a decision support system (DSS) to guide less experienced physicians in this situation. Methods: Nine residents from eight different nuclear medicine departments interpreted 100 MPS stress studies, first without and then with access to the advice of a DSS. Each study was interpreted regarding the necessity of adding a rest study for correct interpretation of the MPS. The patients had undergone a gated stress and rest MPS, using a Tc-99m sestamibi protocol. Interpretations made by three nuclear cardiology experts, having access to all available clinical and image information, were used as the gold standard. Results: In the cases where the gold standard interpretation wanted a rest study the 9 residents asked for it in 94% and 95% before and after having access to the DSS, respectively ( p >0.05). 9. Lateral Distortional Buckling: Predicting Elastic Critical Stress

Abstract

The problem of restrained lateral beam buckling is being treated in this paper. The restraint represents complete lateral and arbitrary continuous rotational restraint of one flange, the latter is represented by the spring stiffness C0.A simple theory, in which the problem is transformed into an ordinary fourth order differential eigenvalue problem is presented and designtables are given. It refines a method previously developed by Svensson. The results obtained are compared with exact results for C0=0the classical theory and C0=∞the latter based on results given in the published literature. For C0=0a maximum deviation of 1% and for C0=deviations in the range of 1% to 4% were found. The results also confirm that a method proposed by other researchers yields similar good results. It is concluded that the method developed in the present paper, due to its generality and simplicity, provides an accurate and quick method for solving complex lateral distortional buckling problems.

12. Double-blind comparison of verapamil and practolol in the treatment of angina pectoris.

Abstract

In thirteen patients with coronary insufficiency and angina pectoris the therapeutic effects of verapamil, 80 mg three times/day and practolol, 100 mg three times/day, were compared and tested against placebo in a double-blind cross-over fashion. Verapamil proved to be the most efficient drug as regards attack frequency and glyceryl trinitrate consumption as well as physical working capacity, bringing about a statistically significant increase of the exercise tolerance as compared to placebo after a treatment period of four weeks. Verapamil is a good alternative to beta-blockers in the prophylactic treatment of angina. Possible modes of action of verapamil in angina pectoris are discussed. 1. The effects of the vagus nerve and of antral gastrin on the rate of histamine formation (histamine forming capacity, HFC, i.e. histidine decarboxylase activity) in the parietal cell region of the gastric mucosa has been investigated in the following stomach preparations: gastric fistula, denervated Heidenhain pouch, antral resection with gastrojejunostomy, gastrojejunostomy with exclusion of the duodenum and in the intact stomach. The determinations of mucosal HFC were made on fasting rats and on re‐fed animals when the effect of feeding was studied.

Abstract

Laparoscopy and palpation offer only a rough estimate of the extent of endometriosis. Consequently, endometriosis involving the bowels and urinary tract is under-diagnosed. Bowel obstruction and retroperitoneal endometriosis with obstruction of the ureter are uncommon conditions, but awareness of them is important. Ureteric obstruction develops slowly from periureteral fibrosis and often results in an asymptomatic hydronephrosis, loss of renal function and hypertension. Although renography is the first line of choice in investigation of the upper urinary tract in cases of suspected ureteric obstruction, ultrasound of the kidneys may be useful in the hands of the experienced gynecologist as a screening tool at consultation. The rationale for this recommendation is that ureteric obstruction and hydronephrosis often occur simultaneously. We present a case with bowel obstruction mimicking sigmoid carcinoma, ureteric obstruction and hypertension, caused by endometriosis, where the diagnostic difficulties are illustrated. Collaboration between gynecologist and urologist is essential in selected cases of endometriosis.

The demand for physicians trained in interventional cardiology has created a need to formalise such education. The Swedish societies of cardiology and thoracic radiology have agreed on a policy document establishing the details of this education. It is the responsibility of the tutor to decide when the pupil has achieved adequate skills.

Abstract

Unlabelled: We investigated the effects of burst-suppression doses of propofol on cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV), cerebral oxygen extraction (COE), and dynamic autoregulation in 20 patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The experimental procedure was performed during nonpulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with stable hypothermia (32 degrees C) in fentanyl-anesthetized patients. Middle cerebral artery transcranial Doppler flow velocity, right jugular bulb oxygen saturation, and jugular venous pressure (JVP) were continuously measured. Dynamic autoregulation was tested by stepwise changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP) within a range of 40-80 mm Hg by sodium nitroprusside and phenylephrine before (control) and during propofol infusion, with a stable plasma concentration (approximately 9 microg/mL). Propofol induced a 35% decrease in CBFV (P < 0.0001) and a 10% decrease in COE (P < 0.05) compared with control. The slopes of the curves relating CBFV and COE to cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP = MAP - JVP) were less pronounced with propofol (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively). We conclude that propofol decreases CBFV and improves dynamic autoregulation during moderate hypothermic CPB. Furthermore, during propofol infusion, cerebral blood flow was in excess relative to oxygen demand, as indicated by the decrease in COE., Implications: In this study, we evaluated the effects of propofol on continuously measured cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) and cerebral oxygen extraction as a function of perfusion pressure. Propofol induced 35% and 10% decreases in CBFV and cerebral oxygen extraction, respectively. The slope of the curve relating cerebral perfusion pressure to CBFV decreased with propofol.

1 The effect of isoprenaline on pentagastrin-induced gastric secretion was studied in conscious rats with Heidenhain pouches. The influence of isoprenaline on pentagastrin-induced release and formation of gastric mucosal histamine was also examined.2 Isoprenaline strongly inhibited pentagastrin-induced acid secretion, an inhibition which could not be overcome by increasing the dose of pentagastrin.3 Propranolol blocked the inhibitory effect of isoprenaline on pentagastrin-induced acid secretion.4 Isoprenaline enhanced pepsin secretion induced by pentagastrin, an effect which was blocked by propranolol.5 Isoprenaline reduced the increase in formation and release of gastric mucosal histamine following pentagastrin infusion, an inhibitory influence which was almost completely blocked by propranolol.6 The inhibition by isoprenaline of pentagastrin-induced acid secretion is tentatively related to alterations in gastric mucosal histamine occurring simultaneously.

1 The effect of isoprenaline on gastric secretion evoked by various means has been studied in conscious rats provided with Pavlov and Heidenhain pouches. 2 Interdigestive acid secretion in the Pavlov pouch was reduced by isoprenaline, whereas pepsin secretion was unaltered. 3 Central vagal stimulation effected by 2-deoxy-D-glucose injection evoked a gastric secretory response that was substantially reduced by isoprenaline. 4 2-Deoxy-D-glucose increased the mobilization of gastric mucosal histamine, an effect that was prevented by isoprenaline. 5 Isoprenaline infusion alone induced a slight increase in histamine mobilization and also a considerable elevation of immunoreactive serum gastrin concentration. 6 The secretory response to food in the Pavlov pouch was almost abolished by isoprenaline. 7 Although the acid response to histamine in the Heidenhain pouch was susceptible to isoprenaline inhibition, that to methacholine was not. 8 Pepsin secretion in the Heidenhain pouch preparation stimulated by histamine or methacholine seemed to be enhanced by isoprenaline.
