Angiokeratoma corporis diffusum (Fabry's disease) is an X-linked disorder of glycosphingolipid catabolism. Heterozygous females, although usually asymptomatic, are occasionally as severely afflicted as hemizygous males; recently we identified a heterozygous patient with cardiomyopathy and severe pain in the extremities. In order to elucidate the difference of the clinical features, we analyzed the glycolipid composition of the heart, liver, and kidney obtained from the patient and from a hemizygote. Gas-liquid chromatography revealed that globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) was markedly increased in the heart (32.4 times higher than control) and increased to a lesser extent in the liver and kidney (3.74 and 6.79 times, respectively). The pattern of Gb3 accumulation in the heterozygote, where the highest increases were seen in the heart, was distinct from that in the hemizygote, where elevated levels of Gb3 and Ga2 were found in the kidney. Furthermore, the alpha-galactosidase activity in the heart, liver, and kidney of the heterozygote was 17%, 26%, and 36%, respectively, of normal controls, which correlated well with the accumulation of glycosphingolipid in the heart and with the disease's clinical manifestations. Two other hemizygotic patients, who were identified by low alpha-galactosidase activities, demonstrated the cardiac involvement.

Permethylated derivatives of cerebrosides and ceramide di-, tri-, tetra-, and penta-hexosides were analyzed by the direct inlet ammonia chemical ionization (CI) mass spectrometry. In the CI mass spectra, the fragment ions produced by the loss of methanol from the protonated molecular ion were observed in all of the glycosphingolipids. Other fragment ions due to the cleavage of glycosidic moiety were major ones under the CI conditions. These ions provide information on the molecular species of glycosphingolipids and the sugar sequence of their oligosaccharides. Glycosphingolipids with hydroxy fatty acids could also be differentiated from those with nonhydroxy fatty acids by comparing the intensities of characteristic fragment ions. The CI method should be particularly useful in structural studies of glycosphingolipids from natural sources.

Intact permethylated and permethylated-reduced (LiAlH4) derivatives of GM1 ganglioside were analyzed by direct inlet ammonia chemical ionization (CI) mass spectrometry. In addition, the trimethylsilylated derivative of the permethylated-reduced sample of this ganglioside was similarly analyzed. CI mass spectrometry proves to be a highly satisfactory method for structural studies of GM1 ganglioside because of the simple fragmentation pattern and the presence of prominent molecular ions and fragment ions in the high mass region. Complete information on the carbohydrate sequence and lipophilic composition can be easily obtained.

The use of octadeutero eicosatetraenoic acid as an internal standard for the reproducible measurement of serum eicosapolyenoic acids (C20:3, C20:4, and C20:5) by gas-liquid chromatography-chemical ionization mass spectrometry is described. The method has the following advantages. The physicochemical properties of the internal standard and the eicosapolyenoic acids are similar. The acids are easily separated from compounds of similar retention times by means of selected ion monitoring. The measurements can be made more rapidly, (10 min per sample) than with previous techniques.

Submicrogram quantities of trimethylsilyl derivatives of cerebrosides obtained from the spleen of a patient with Gaucher's disease and from bovine brain were analyzed by direct probe inlet-chemical ionization mass spectrometry, using isobutane as the reagent gas. Quasimolecular ions (QM+, M + 73) and other recognizable fragment ions produced by the successive elimination of trimethylsilanol and sugar residue gave useful information about fatty acid compositions. These ions could also be utilized for qualitative analyses of the molecular species of cerebrosides. Cerebrosides with non-hydroxy and hydroxy fatty acids could be discriminated from each other by comparing the intensities of their quasimolecular ions. Cerebrosides with saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids could also be discrimnated from each other, because the mass number decreased by two mass units in cerebrosides with monounsaturated fatty acids. It was concluded that structural information and molecular species determination could be obtained from small amounts of purified cerebrosides.

Permethylated derivatives of N-acetylneuraminic acid-containing GM3, N-glycolylneuraminic acid-containing GM3, GD1a, and GD1b, were analyzed by direct inlet ammonia chemical ionization (CI) mass spectrometry. These compounds were found to yield simple fragmentations, prominent fragment ions in the high mass region, and characteristic fragment ions corresponding to the cleavage of glycosidic linkages. This method also provides detailed information on the carbohydrate sequence and lipophilic composition in gangliosides.

Trisialogangliosides were isolated from bovine adrenal medulla by DEAE-Sephadex A-25 and Iatrobeads column chromatography. Their structures were elucidated by sugar analysis, neuraminidase digestion, and permethylation studies. The complete structures of trisialogangliosides, A to D, were identified as follows. A: GT1b, IV3NeuAc, II3 (NeuAc)2-GgOse4Cer. B: GT1b(NeuAc/NeuAc-NeuGc-); IV3NeuAc, II3 (NeuAc alpha 2-8 NeuGc-)GgOse4Cer. C: GT1b (NeuGc/NeuAc-NeuAc-); IV3NeuGc, II3 (NeuAc alpha 2-8 NeuAc-)GgOse4Cer. D: GT1b (NeuAc/NeuGc-NeuGc-); IV3NeuAc, II3 (NeuGc alpha 2-8 NeuGc-)GgOse4Cer. Gangliosides B, C, and D, which contain N-glycolylneuraminic acid, have not previously been reported in the literature.

Studies have reported the emergence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) due to surgery. In fact, the usfige of long-shafted instruments has been suspected to induce WMSD in laparoscopic surgery. The present study therefore investigated whether differences in the range of motion of the face and neck, and the shoulder, elbow and hand on the dominant hand side, existed when using short- and long-shafted laparoscopic coagulation shears (LCS) during a gynecological laparoscopic surgery, based on images analyzed using artificial intelligence. After identifying the corresponding body parts in the video, the range of motion was illustrated graphically for each joint coordinate, followed by statistical analysis for changes in the position of each part. The range of motion for the face and neck did not significantly differ, whereas those for the shoulder, elbow and hand became noticeably broader when using the 36-cm long-shafted LCS than when using the 20-cm short-shafted LCS. Movement is an important behavior observed in a wide range of taxa. Previous studies have examined genes controlling movement using wing polymorphic insects and genes controlling wing size. However, few studies have investigated genes controlling movement activity rather than morphological traits. In the present study, we conducted RNA sequencing using populations with higher (WL) and lower (WS) mobility established by artificial selection in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum and compared gene expression levels between selected populations with two replicate lines. As a result, we found significant differences between the selected populations in 677 genes expressed in one replicate line and 1198 genes expressed in another replicate line, of which 311 genes were common to the two replicate lines. Furthermore, quantitative PCR focusing on 6 of these genes revealed that neuropeptide F receptor gene (NpF) was significantly more highly expressed in the WL population than in the WS population, which was common to the two replicate lines. Laser-driven ion sources are a rapidly developing technology producing high energy, high peak current beams. Their suitability for applications, such as compact medical accelerators, motivates development of robust acceleration schemes using widely available repetitive ultraintense femtosecond lasers. These applications not only require high beam energy, but also place demanding requirements on the source stability and controllability. This can be seriously affected by the laser temporal contrast, precluding the replication of ion acceleration performance on independent laser systems with otherwise similar parameters. Here, we present the experimental generation of >60 MeV protons and >30 MeV u -1 carbon ions from sub-micrometre thickness Formvar foils irradiated with laser intensities >10 21 Wcm 2 . Ions are accelerated by an extreme localised space charge field ≳30 TVm -1 , over a million times higher than used in conventional accelerators. The field is formed by a rapid expulsion of electrons from the target bulk due to relativistically induced transparency, in which relativistic corrections to the refractive index enables laser transmission through normally opaque plasma. We replicate the mechanism on two different laser facilities and show that the optimum target thickness decreases with improved laser contrast due to reduced pre-expansion. Our demonstration that energetic ions can be accelerated by this mechanism at different contrast levels relaxes laser requirements and indicates interaction parameters for realising application-specific beam delivery., (© 2023. Death-feigning behaviour is a phenomenon in which a prey is rendered motionless due to stimulation or threat from a predator. This anti-predator defence mechanism has been observed across numerous animal taxa and is considered adaptive in nature. However, longer durations of death feigning can result in decreased opportunities for feeding and reproduction, and therefore is often associated with fitness costs as compared to environments without predators. Differences have also been observed in the frequencies and durations of death feigning within populations, and these differences are thought to be influenced by the balance between survival and other fitness costs. Furthermore, this balance is predicted to vary in response to changes in environmental conditions. In this study, we examined the death feigning in 38 populations of the red flour beetle ( Tribolium castaneum ). Our results demonstrate that frequencies and durations of the death feigning in T. castaneum show geographical variations and a latitude cline, indicating that this behaviour is influenced by location as well as latitude. This study is the first to demonstrate the existence of a latitudinal cline in death feigning and suggests that death-feigning behaviour might have evolved in response to environmental factors that vary with latitude.

Reciprocal crossing of different strains is a suitable method to investigate the dominance and inheritance of a focal trait. Herein, we performed reciprocal crossing among strains of Tribolium castaneum exhibiting a genetically high (H strain) and low (L strain) moving activity and investigated the related heritable factors in the F 1 and F 2 generations. We also evaluated death-feigning behavior, which negatively responded to artificial selection for moving activity in T. castaneum. The results obtained for the F 1 generation suggest that low moving activity and short duration of death feigning were dominant. In the F 2 generation, movement and death feigning exhibited continuous segregation. The distribution of each trait value in the F 2 generation differed from that in the parental generation, and no individuals transgressing the distribution of trait values in the parental generation emerged in the F 2 generation. These results suggest that the genetic correlation between movement and death-feigning behavior is controlled in a polygenic manner. Moreover, the examination of the proportions of both behaviors (high vs. low moving activity and long vs. short death-feigning duration) in the F 1 generation revealed that the two behaviors may be controlled by the maternal genotype, suggesting that the gene(s) that control movement and death feigning are located on the sex chromosome in T. castaneum., (© 2022. Death-feigning behavior is an anti-predatory technique used in several animal taxa and often correlates with inhibited movements (i.e., death-feigning syndrome). We performed a reciprocal crossing among strains exhibiting a genetically longer (L-strain) and shorter (S-strain) duration of death feigning. Then, we investigated related heritable factors in F 1 and F 2 populations. We also evaluated movement activities, which negatively responded to artificial selection for death feigning in T. castaneum. Our results indicated that death feigning occurred more frequently and for shorter periods in the F 1 population. However, in the F 2 population, death feigning and movement exhibited continuous segregation. Although the distribution of each trait value in the F 2 generation differed from that of the parental generation, no individuals transgressing the distribution of trait values in the parental generation emerged from the F 2 generation. Besides, chi-square analysis of the observed death feigning and movement of F 1 and F 2 progenies rejected the hypothesis of mono-major gene inheritance. Prey evolve antipredator strategies against multiple enemies in nature. We examined how a prey species adopts different predation avoidance tactics against pursuit or sit-and-wait predators. As prey, we used three strains of Tribolium beetles artificially selected for short (short strain) or long (long strain) duration of death feigning, and a stock culture (base population). Death feigning is known to be effective for evading a jumping spider in the case of the long strains, while the present study showed that the long-strain beetles used freezing against a sit-and-wait type predator, Amphibolus venator , in this study. The short- strain beetles were more easily oriented toward predators. The time to predation was also shorter in the short strains compared to the long strains. The results showed that, as prey, the short strains displayed the same behavior, escaping, against both types of predators. Traditionally, death feigning has been thought to be the last resort in a series of antipredator avoidance behaviors. However, our results showed that freezing and death feigning were not parts of a series of behaviors, but independent strategies against different predators, at least for long-strain beetles. We also examined the relationship between a predator's starvation level and its predatory behavior. Predator avoidance is an important behavior that affects the degree of adaptation of organisms. We compared the DNA variation of one of the predator-avoidance behaviors, the recently extensively studied "death-feigning behavior", between the long strain bred for feigning death for a long time and the short strain bred for feigning death for a short time. To clarify how the difference in DNA sequences between the long and short strains corresponds to the physiological characteristics of the death-feigning duration at the transcriptome level, we performed comprehensive and comparative analyses of gene variants in Tribolium castaneum strains using DNA-resequencing. The duration of death feigning involves many gene pathways, including caffeine metabolism, tyrosine metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, longevity regulating pathways, and circadian rhythm. Artificial selection based on the duration of death feigning results in the preservation of variants of genes in these pathways in the long strain. This study suggests that many metabolic pathways and related genes may be involved in the decision-making process of anti-predator animal behavior by forming a network in addition to the tyrosine metabolic system, including dopamine, revealed in previous studies., (© 2021. Since the variables inherent to various diseases cannot be controlled directly in humans, behavioral dysfunctions have been examined in model organisms, leading to better understanding their underlying mechanisms. However, because the spatial and temporal scales of animal locomotion vary widely among species, conventional statistical analyses cannot be used to discover knowledge from the locomotion data. We propose a procedure to automatically discover locomotion features shared among animal species by means of domain-adversarial deep neural networks. Our neural network is equipped with a function which explains the meaning of segments of locomotion where the cross-species features are hidden by incorporating an attention mechanism into the neural network, regarded as a black box. It enables us to formulate a human-interpretable rule about the cross-species locomotion feature and validate it using statistical tests. We demonstrate the versatility of this procedure by identifying locomotion features shared across different species with dopamine deficiency, namely humans, mice, and worms, despite their evolutionary differences., (© 2021. In Japan, the age-adjusted incidence of cervical cancer has been increasing constantly and rapidly among younger women. We set out to accurately confirm the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine in Japan. Data were collected for women born in the fiscal year (FY) 1990 to 1997, who became eligible for their 20-y-old cervical cancer screening between the FY 2010 to 2017. The adjusted incidence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)1+ in women born in FY 1990 to 1993, that is those who reached the national vaccination target age prior to the introduction of publicly subsidized HPV vaccinations, referred here after as "the pre-introduction generation", was 1.42% (242/17 040). The incidence in the "vaccination generation" (women born in FY 1994 to 1997, that is those who were heavily vaccinated as a group when they were of the nationally targeted age of 13-16) was 1.66% (135/8020). There was no significant difference between these incidence rates. However, our FY birth year-by-year analysis revealed that the incidence of CIN1+ was obviously lower than that predicted based on just the trend for CIN1+ seen in the pre-introduction generation. Our analysis revealed that the incidence of CIN3+ was obviously lower in the vaccination generation than in the pre-introduction generation (P = .0008). The incidence of CIN was already tending to increase in both the pre-introduction and vaccination generations. The changes in CIN incidence by individual birth FY must be examined to accurately determine the actual effects of the HPV vaccine for reducing mild cervical lesions., (© 2021 The Authors. Bet-hedging via polyandry (spreading the extinction risk of the female's lineage over multiple males) may explain the evolution of female multiple mating, which is found in a wide range of animal and plant taxa. This hypothesis posits that females can increase their fitness via polyandrous mating when "unsuitable" males (i.e., males causing reproductive failure for various reasons) are frequent in the population and females cannot discriminate such unsuitable mates. Although recent theoretical studies have shown that polyandry can operate as a bet-hedging strategy, empirical tests are scarce. In the present study, we tested the bet-hedging polyandry hypothesis by using the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum . We compared female reproductive success between monandry and polyandry treatments when females mated with males randomly collected from an experimental population, including 20% irradiated (infertile) males. In addition, we evaluated geometric mean fitness across multiple generations as the index of adaptability of bet-hedging traits. Polyandrous females showed a significantly higher egg hatching rate and higher geometric mean fitness than monandrous females. Many species show rhythmicity in activity, from the timing of flowering in plants to that of foraging behavior in animals. The free-running periods and amplitude (sometimes called strength or power) of circadian rhythms are often used as indicators of biological clocks. Many reports have shown that these traits are highly geographically variable, and interestingly, they often show latitudinal or longitudinal clines. In many cases, the higher the latitude is, the longer the free-running circadian period (i.e., period of rhythm) in insects and plants. However, reports of positive correlations between latitude or longitude and circadian rhythm traits, including free-running periods, the power of the rhythm and locomotor activity, are limited to certain taxonomic groups. Therefore, we collected a cosmopolitan stored-product pest species, the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum, in various parts of Japan and examined its rhythm traits, including the power and period of the rhythm, which were calculated from locomotor activity. The analysis revealed that the power was significantly lower for beetles collected in northern areas than southern areas in Japan. However, it is worth noting that the period of circadian rhythm did not show any clines; specifically, it did not vary among the sampling sites, despite the very large sample size (n = 1585). Tonic immobility and escape are adaptive anti-predator tactics used by many animals. Escape requires movement, whereas tonic immobility does not. If anti-predator tactics relate to weapon size, males with larger weapons may adopt tonic immobility, whereas males with smaller weapons may adopt escape. However, no study has investigated the relationship between weapon size and anti-predator tactics. In this study, we investigated the relationship between male weapon size and tonic immobility in the beetle Gnathocerus cornutus . The results showed that tonic immobility was more frequent in males with larger weapons. Although most studies of tonic immobility in beetles have focused on the duration, rather than the frequency, tonic immobility duration was not affected by weapon size in G . cornutus . Therefore, this study is the first, to our knowledge, to suggest that the male weapon trait affects anti-predator tactics.

A comparative analysis of animal behavior (e.g., male vs. female groups) has been widely used to elucidate behavior specific to one group since pre-Darwinian times. However, big data generated by new sensing technologies, e.g., GPS, makes it difficult for them to contrast group differences manually. This study introduces DeepHL, a deep learning-assisted platform for the comparative analysis of animal movement data, i.e., trajectories. This software uses a deep neural network based on an attention mechanism to automatically detect segments in trajectories that are characteristic of one group. It then highlights these segments in visualized trajectories, enabling biologists to focus on these segments, and helps them reveal the underlying meaning of the highlighted segments to facilitate formulating new hypotheses. We tested the platform on a variety of trajectories of worms, insects, mice, bears, and seabirds across a scale from millimeters to hundreds of kilometers, revealing new movement features of these animals.

The trend for cervical cancer in younger women has been increasing recently in Japan. However, as a result of the suspension of governmental recommendation, Japan's HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination rate for girls born since 2000 has dropped sharply. We conducted an internet survey in December of 2019, 76 months after the suspension of recommendation, to verify the intention of mothers to inoculate their daughter under current circumstances and compared with our previous surveys and leaflet intervention effect. The rates of mothers who replied that they would "inoculate" were significantly higher at 9 and 23 months, but by 32 months after the suspension the rate was significantly lower ( p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.05, respectively). The rates of the mothers who replied they would not inoculate were significantly lower at 9 months and 23 months, but at 76 months was significantly higher ( p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.05, respectively). We found that intervention with a leaflet that could be used under the current suspension of the governmental recommendation did not increase the mothers' intention to inoculate their daughters. A leaflet that actively encourages vaccination may increase the intent of vaccination. It is strongly recommended that the MHLW promptly resume its recommendations for HPV vaccination.

Introduction: The HPV vaccination rate in Japan has been dismally low. Our previous survey work found that mothers in Japan, who have a strong influence over their daughters, often are receptive to the fathers' participation in the family's decision-making process about getting their daughter HPV vaccinated., Methods: We conducted a survey to investigate the nature of the influence of fathers' participation on the mother's decision-making process. From an internet survey panel, we selected a pool of 1,499 eligible mothers who had 12-18 years old daughters. The mothers were randomized into three Groups. To the mothers in Group A, we gave an educational leaflet regarding HPV vaccination and a second leaflet which recommended that they talk with their husbands about the vaccination. To Group B, we gave only the educational leaflet. No leaflets were sent to Group C. A structured survey questionnaire was then distributed through the internet to the mothers., Results: In Groups A, B, and C, their intention to have their daughter receive the HPV vaccine was 21.6%, 20.7% and 8.2%, respectively. The percent of Group A mothers who thought their husband's opinion was important for when they made the decision was significantly higher (70%) than in Group B (56.6%) or Group C (47.1%)., Conclusions: The fathers' participation in the mothers' decision-making does not increase the likelihood of HPV vaccination for their daughters. On the other hand, the educational leaflet proved to be effective for this cause.

The molecular basis of death feigning, an antipredator behavior that has received much attention recently, was analyzed. We compared the gene expression profiles of strains with different behaviors, i.e., different durations of death feigning, in the beetle Tribolium castaneum. Beetles artificially selected for short (S) and long (L) durations of death feigning for many generations were compared thoroughly by RNA sequencing. We identified 518 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the strains. The strains also showed divergence in unexpected gene expression regions. As expected from previous physiological studies, genes associated with the metabolic pathways of tyrosine, a precursor of dopamine, were differentially expressed between the S and L strains; these enzyme-encoding genes were expressed at higher levels in the L strain than in the S strain. We also found that several genes associated with insulin signaling were expressed at higher levels in the S strain than in the L strain. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that the relative expression levels of Tchpd (encoding 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase, Hpd) and Tcnat (encoding N-acetyltransferase, Nat) were significantly higher in the L strain than in the S strain, suggesting the influence of these enzymes on the supply of dopamine and duration of death feigning.

Tonic immobility (TI) is an effective anti-predator strategy. However, long immobility status on the ground increases the risk of being eaten by predators, and thus insects must rouse themselves when appropriate stimulation is provided. Here, the strength of vibration causing arousal from the state of TI was examined in strains artificially selected for longer duration of TI (L-strains: long sleeper) in a beetle. We provided different strengths of vibration stimuli to the long sleepers in Tribolium castaneum. Although immobilized beetles were never awakened by the stimuli from 0.01 to 0.12 mm in amplitude, almost of the beetles were aroused from immobilized status by the stimulus at 0.21 mm. There was a difference in sensitivity of individuals when the stimuli of 0.14 mm and 0.18 mm were provided. F2 individuals were also bred by crossing experiments of the strains selected for shorter and longer duration of TI. The arousal sensitivity to vibration was well separated in the F2 individuals. A positive relationship was observed between the duration of TI and the vibration amplitude, suggesting that immobilized beetles are difficult to arouse from a deep sleep, while light sleepers are easily aroused by even small vibrations. The results indicate a genetic basis for sensitivity to arousal from TI.

Ultrafast vibronic dynamics induced by the interaction of the Frenkel exciton with the coherent molecular vibrations in a layer-structured zinc chlorin aggregates prepared for artificial photosynthesis have been studied by 7.1 fs real-time vibrational spectroscopy with multi-spectrum detection. The fast decay of 100 ± 5fs is ascribed to the relaxation from the higher multi-exciton state (MES) to the one-exciton state, and the slow one of 863 ± 70fs is assigned to the relaxation from Q-exciton state to the dark nonfluorescent charge-transfer (CT) state, respectively. In addition, the wavelength dependences of the exciton-vibration coupling strength are found to follow the zeroth derivative of the transient absorption spectra of the exciton. It could be explained in term of the transition dipole moment modulated by dynamic intensity borrowing between the B transition and the Q transition through the vibronic interactions.

Although it is clear that walking over different irregular terrain is associated with altered biomechanics, there is little understanding of how we quickly adapt to unexpected variations in terrain. This study aims to investigate which adaptive strategies humans adopt when performing an unanticipated step on an irregular surface, specifically a small bump. Nine healthy male participants walked at their preferred walking speed along a straight walkway during five conditions: four involving unanticipated bumps of two different heights, and one level walking condition. Muscle activation of eight lower limb muscles and three-dimensional gait analysis were evaluated during these testing conditions. Two distinct adaptive strategies were found, which involved no significant change in total lower limb mechanical work or walking speed. An ankle-based strategy was adopted when stepping on a bump with the forefoot, whereas a hip-based strategy was preferred when stepping with the rearfoot. These strategies were driven by a higher activation of the plantarflexor muscles (6-51%), which generated a higher ankle joint moment during the forefoot conditions and by a higher activation of the quadriceps muscles (36-93%), which produced a higher knee joint moment and hip joint power during the rearfoot conditions. Many animal behaviors have a genetic base, and behavioral traits often correlate with one another. In this study, we tested for a behavioral correlation between tonic immobility and walking distance in the larval and adult stages independently of two holometabolous insects. We confirmed a negative correlation of traits between strains in adults of both the species; however, we did not find it in larvae of either species. This suggests that the negative correlation between tonic immobility and walking is decoupled across life stages from larva to adult. In contrast, previous studies have reported that phenotypic correlations between behavioral traits are maintained from larvae to adults in hemimetabolous insects. In addition, our present results differ from previous results with holometabolous insects. Therefore, our results suggest that metamorphosis can change trade-offs between behavioral traits.
