Forty-six students majoring in business English volunteered to take part in an extensive reading program. The learners were divided into two groups: EG, the experimental group, received instruction in methods of extensive reading plus explicit output-pushed activities, and CG, the control group, received instruction in methods of extensive reading only. This study measured the effects of extensive reading on EFL vocabulary learning, through the effects of the two different instruction methods on learning receptive and productive vocabulary for the 46 learners of different vocabulary size. The research found that (a) both the two instructional methods resulted in significant gains in learners’ receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge, but the combination of the incidental and intentional learning instruction yields greater vocabulary gains; (b) around 60% of receptive vocabulary is understood productively; and (c) students’ vocabulary size plays a decisive role in acquiring the receptive and productive aspect of vocabulary knowledge

Abstract Osteoblasts and osteoclasts play an important role in maintaining the structural integrity of bone tissue, in which osteoclasts degrade bone structure and osteoblasts restore bone tissue. The imbalance of osteoblast and osteoclast function can lead to many bone-related diseases, such as osteoporosis and inflammatory osteolysis. The drug that can both promote bone formation and inhibit bone loss will be able to treat those diseases. In this study, it was found that LMK-235, an selective HDAC4/5 inhibitor, inhibited the differentiation and maturation of osteoclasts by regulating NF-κB and p-Smad2/3 signaling pathways via inhibition of HDAC4. At the same time, we found that LMK-235 promoted osteoblast mineralization by upregulating Runx2 expression via inhibition of HDAC4. In vivo, LMK-235 was able to alleviate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced calvarial osteolysis and promote the repair of bone defects. Taken together, LMK-235 suppresses osteoclast differentiation and promotes osteoblast formation by inhibiting HDAC4. This may provide a valuable treatment for bone diseases caused by abnormal osteoclast bone resorption and osteoblast bone regeneration.

Heterogeneous karst surfaces exerted scaling effects whereby specific runoff decrease with increasing area. The existing RUSLE-L equations are limited by the default implicit assumption that the surface-runoff intensity is constant at any slope length. The objective of this study was to modify the L-equation by establishing the functional relationship between surface-runoff intensity and karst slope length, and to evaluate its predictive capability at different resolution DEMs. Transfer grid layers were generated based on the area rate of surface karstification and considered the runoff transmission percentage at the exposed karst fractures or conduits to be zero. Using the multiple flow direction algorithm united with the transfer grid (MFDTG), the flow accumulation of each grid cell was simulated to estimate the average surface-runoff intensity over different slope lengths. The effectiveness of MFDTG algorithm was validated by runoff plot data in Southwestern China. The simulated results in a typical peak-cluster depression basin with an area rate of surface karstification of 6.5% showed that the relationship between surface-runoff intensity and slope length was a negative power function. Estimated by the proposed modified L-equation ((alx(b+1)/22.13)m), the L-factor averages of the study basin ranged from 0.35 to 0.41 at 1, 5, 25 and 90 m resolutions respectively. This study indicated that the modified L-equation enables an improved prediction of the much smaller L-factor and the use of any resolution DEMs on karst landscapes. Particular attention should be given to the variation of surface-runoff intensity with slope length when predicting L-factor on hillslopes with runoff scale effect.

High-resolution remote sensing imagery, reaching meter or sub-meter levels, provides essential data for extracting and identifying road information. However, rural roads are often narrow, elongated, and have blurred boundaries, with textures that resemble surrounding environments such as construction sites, vegetation, and farmland. These features often lead to incomplete extraction and low extraction accuracy of rural roads. To address these challenges, this study introduces the RC-MSFNet model, based on the U-Net architecture, to enhance rural road extraction performance. The RC-MSFNet model mitigates the vanishing gradient problem in deep networks by incorporating residual neural networks in the downsampling stage. In the upsampling stage, a connectivity attention mechanism is added after dual convolution layers to improve the model’s ability to capture road completeness and connectivity. Additionally, the bottleneck section replaces the traditional dual convolution layers with a multi-scale fusion atrous convolution module to capture features at various scales. The study focuses on rural roads in the Xiong’an New Area, China, using high-resolution imagery from China’s Gaofen-2 satellite to construct the XARoads rural road dataset. Roads were extracted from the XARoads dataset and DeepGlobe public dataset using the RC-MSFNet model and compared with some models such as U-Net, FCN, SegNet, DeeplabV3+, R-Net, and RC-Net. Experimental results showed that: (1) The proposed method achieved precision (P), intersection over union (IOU), and completeness (COM) scores of 0.8350, 0.6523, and 0.7489, respectively, for rural road extraction in Xiong’an New Area, representing precision improvements of 3.8%, 6.78%, 7.85%, 2.14%, 0.58%, and 2.53% over U-Net, FCN, SegNet, DeeplabV3+, R-Net, and RC-Net. (2) The method excelled at extracting narrow roads and muddy roads with unclear boundaries, with fewer instances of omission or false extraction, demonstrating advantages in complex rural terrain and areas with indistinct road boundaries. Accurate rural road extraction can provide valuable reference data for urban development and planning in the Xiong’an New Area.

Abstract Background Both closed platform and open platform robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty (THA) have recently been recommended as a viable treatment option for achieving accurate positioning of components. Yet, limited studies paid attention to the differences between the closed platform robotic system and the open platform robotic system. Hence, this study aimed to investigate clinical outcomes, radiographic outcomes, complication rates and learning curve of two systems. Materials and methods We retrospectively included 62 patients (31 closed robotic system and 31 open robotic system) who underwent THA between February 2021 and January 2023. The demographics, operating time, cup positioning, complications and hip Harris score were evaluated. Learning curves of operation time was conducted using cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis. Results There were no differences in surgical time (76.7 ± 12.1 min vs. 72.3 ± 14.8 min), estimated blood loss (223.2 ± 13.2 ml vs. 216.9 ± 17 ml) and Harris Hip score (HHS) between closed platform robotic system and the open platform robotic system. The closed robotic system and the open robotic system were associated with a learning curve of 9 cases and 7 cases for surgical time respectively, based on the satisfying rate of Lewinnek’s safe zone outliers (1/31, 96.8%) and no occurrence of complication. Both robotic systems had significant reduction in overall surgical time, the duration of acetabulum registration, and estimated blood loss between learning phase and proficiency phase. Conclusion The authors suggest that the surgical outcomes and safe zone outlier rate of the open robotic-assisted THA were similar to those of the closed robotic-assisted THA. These two robotic-assisted are associated with comparable learning curves and both have the precise positioning of acetabular component. From learning phase to proficiency phase, the rate of positions within the safe zone differed only marginally (88.9–100% vs. 85.7–100%) based on a rather low number of patients. This is not a statistically significant difference. Therefore, we suggest that THA undergoing with the robotic-assisted system is the relatively useful way to achieve planned acetabular cup position so far.

Intelligent control algorithms have been extensively utilized for adaptive controller parameter adjustment. While the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm has several issues: slow convergence speed requiring a large number of iterations, a tendency to get trapped in local optima, and difficulty escaping from them. It is also sensitive to the distribution of the solution space, where uneven distribution can lead to inefficient contraction. On the other hand, the Beetle Antennae Search (BAS) algorithm is robust, precise, and has strong global search capabilities. However, its limitation lies in focusing on a single individual. As the number of iterations increases, the step size decays, causing it to get stuck in local extrema and preventing escape. Although setting a fixed or larger initial step size can avoid this, it results in poor stability. The PSO algorithm, which targets a population, can help the BAS algorithm increase diversity and address its deficiencies. Conversely, the characteristics of the BAS algorithm can aid the PSO algorithm in finding the optimal solution early in the optimization process, accelerating convergence. Therefore, considering the combination of BAS and PSO algorithms can leverage their respective advantages and enhance overall algorithm performance. This paper proposes an improved algorithm, W-K-BSO, which integrates the Beetle Antennae Search strategy into the local search phase of PSO. By leveraging chaotic mapping, the algorithm enhances population diversity and accelerates convergence speed. Additionally, the adoption of linearly decreasing inertia weight enhances algorithm performance, while the coordinated control of the contraction factor and inertia weight regulates global and local optimization performance. Furthermore, the influence of beetle antennae position increments on particles is incorporated, along with the establishment of new velocity update rules. Simulation experiments conducted on nine benchmark functions demonstrate that the W-K-BSO algorithm consistently exhibits strong optimization capabilities. It significantly improves the ability to escape local optima, convergence precision, and algorithm stability across various dimensions, with enhancements ranging from 7 to 9 orders of magnitude compared to the BAS algorithm. Application of the W-K-BSO algorithm to PID optimization for the Pointing and Tracking System (PTS) reduced system stabilization time by 28.5%, confirming the algorithm’s superiority and competitiveness.

The relationships between knowledge and regulation of cognition and how they interact to mediate the effects of task-induced involvement load on word learning and confidence judgments were investigated. The participants were 77 undergraduate English majors. They were required to complete a checklist on metacognition. Subsequently, they were assigned to complete three tasks with varying degree of involvement load. They were then required to rate their confidence in learning and using the target words. Pre- and post-study vocabulary tests were administered to measure improvement in word learning. According to the checklist on metacognition, the learners were assigned to four different ability groups. The results showed that knowledge of cognition is a good predictor of the confidence judgments, in the same way that regulation of cognition is a good predictor of the confidence judgments. In terms of learners' actual word learning performance, task-induced involvement load is mediated significantly by the regulatory competence but not by the knowledge of cognition. There is a discrepancy between learners' self-assessment and actual performance. Relevant educational implications are discussed.

The present study was conducted in the context of learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) with the purpose of assessing the roles of breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge in academic listening comprehension. The Vocabulary Size Test (VST, Nation & Beglar, 2007) and the Word Associates Test (WAT, Read, 2004) were administered to measure breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge, respectively. EFL listening comprehension was measured with an academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The findings indicated that (a) both dimensions of vocabulary knowledge were positively and significantly correlated with academic listening comprehension, but depth of vocabulary knowledge indicated a higher correlation; (b) multiple regression analysis revealed that depth of vocabulary knowledge was a stronger predictor of listening comprehension success; and (c) a lexical coverage of 98% only yielded a listening comprehension percentage of 66.4%, which is less than the level of adequate listening comprehension, defined as scoring higher than 70% (Staehr, 2009). Although the present study confirmed the important role of vocabulary knowledge in successful EFL listening comprehension, other linguistic or non-linguistic factors might also affect the participants' listening comprehension success.

Abstract Background Performing postoperative laboratory tests following joint arthroplasty is a regular practice. However, the role of routine postoperative laboratory tests in primary hip arthroplasty is currently in doubt. This study aimed to assess the role of routine postoperative laboratory tests for femoral neck fractures in elderly patients who underwent hip hemiarthroplasty and to evaluate the risk factors for postoperative laboratory testing abnormalities and related interventions. Methods This retrospective study reviewed 735 consecutive patients with femoral neck fractures (FNFs) who underwent hip hemiarthroplasty at a single tertiary academic organization. Patient characteristic features and laboratory testing values were recorded. Logistic regression models were calculated to identify risk factors. Results A total of 321 elderly patients (> 75 years of age) were ultimately enrolled for analysis. Abnormal postoperative laboratory tests were found in 265 patients (82.6%). Only a minority of the included patients (7.5%) needed medical intervention to treat postoperative laboratory testing abnormalities. This study is an attempt to explore the correlation between direct and indirect vocabulary learning strategies along with the depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge. To this end, a sample of 145 low proficiency students who learn English as a Foreign Language (EFL) completed a questionnaire concerning vocabulary learning strategy use. Vocabulary Levels Test (Schmitt et al., 2001) and Word Associates Test (Read, 1993; 2004) were administered to measure the breadth and depth of lexical repertoire respectively. The results indicated that (a) direct strategies were frequently used by EFL students (except for direct cognitive analyzing strategy), and (b), indirect strategies were less frequently used strategies. Participants' scores in strategy use were correlated significantly and positively with breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge. However, indirect strategy use had a higher level of correlation with two dimensions of vocabulary knowledge, implying that EFL students with a higher level of depth and breadth of lexical repertoire tended to use strategies that are more indirect. This highlights the importance of indirect strategies, e.g., self-planning, self-monitoring, and self-evaluating. These and other relevant pedagogical implications were discussed.

In this study, the degree of bleaching of multi-grain coarse quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signal of near-surface aeolian samples collected around the Tengger Desert is assessed. The single-aliquot regenerative dose (SAR) protocol and the standardized growth curve (SGC) method are applied to measure the equivalent dose (De) of these samples. The bleaching degree of the samples is assessed by investigating 1) the relationship between Ln/Tn and SAR De and 2) the SGC De distribution. Various degrees of heterogeneously-bleached multi-grain dose distributions synthetized with a numerical simulation method is further used to validate the bleaching performance of the samples. It demonstrates that the investigated samples are characterized by tight De distributions and the maximum De estimate is smaller than 1.1 Gy. The numerical simulation method which uses as input a large proportion of fully-bleached grains and a small baseline dose is able to reproduce multi-grain De distributions similar to the measured ones. We conclude that OSL signals of multi-grain coarse quartz extracted from most of the investigated aeolian samples are fully bleached before deposition.

This study was inspired by Qian (1999) and Staehr (2009) and researched 88 Chinese learners who had already passed the College English Test 4 (CET). These learners volunteered to participate in the study regarding the depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge and its relationship with listening comprehension, which was assessed by analyzing the results of a series of comprehensive tests including the vocabulary size test (VST), depth of vocabulary knowledge (DVK), and listening comprehension test (LCT). The findings suggested that a vocabulary level of 5,000 word families had a higher correlation with academic listening comprehension (r = 0.86), while a vocabulary level of 3,000 word families had a lower correlation with a lower listening comprehension (r = 0.41). This is evidence that outstanding listening scores require a larger vocabulary size than does reading. This study also showed that the depth of vocabulary knowledge provided a higher correlation (r = 0.91) with listening comprehension and a higher predictive power in listening comprehension than the breadth of vocabulary knowledge. A multiple regression analysis was used, and the R[superscript 2] change was 2.6% when adding DVK to VST, which demonstrated that the depth of vocabulary knowledge had a significant predictive power on the scores of listening comprehension. This showed that attention should be paid to this area, with teachers as well as learners, in China as well as in other EFL contexts in future teaching and learning of listening comprehension.

Abstract Background New therapies are urgently needed for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Sodium oligomannate (GV-971) is a marine-derived oligosaccharide with a novel proposed mechanism of action. The first phase 3 clinical trial of GV-971 has been completed in China. Methods We conducted a phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in participants with mild-to-moderate AD to assess GV-971 efficacy and safety. Participants were randomized to placebo or GV-971 (900 mg) for 36 weeks. The primary outcome was the drug-placebo difference in change from baseline on the 12-item cognitive subscale of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-cog12). Secondary endpoints were drug-placebo differences on the Clinician’s Interview-Based Impression of Change with caregiver input (CIBIC+), Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study-Activities of Daily Living (ADCS-ADL) scale, and Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Safety and tolerability were monitored. Results A total of 818 participants were randomized: 408 to GV-971 and 410 to placebo. A significant drug-placebo difference on the ADAS-Cog12 favoring GV-971 was present at each measurement time point, measurable at the week 4 visit and continuing throughout the trial. Small RNAs are essential for a variety of cellular functions. Argonaute (AGO) proteins are associated with all of the different classes of small RNAs, and are indispensable in small RNA-mediated regulatory pathways. AGO proteins have been identified in various types of stem cells in diverse species from plants and animals. This review article highlights recent progress on how AGO proteins and AGO-bound small RNAs regulate the self-renewal and differentiation of distinct stem cell types, including pluripotent, germline, somatic, and cancer stem cells.

The precise fabrication of artificially designed molecular complexes into ordered structures resembling their natural counterparts would find broad applications but remains a major challenge in the field. Here we genetically design chitin-binding domain (CBD)-containing amyloid proteins, and rationally fabricate well-ordered CBD-containing functional amyloid-chitin complex structures by coupling a top-down manufacturing process with a bottom-up self-assembly. Our fabrication approach starts with the dissolution of both CBD-containing functional amyloid and chitin in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) to make a hybrid ink. This hybrid ink platform, coupled with multiple fabrication methods including airbrushing, electrospinning and soft-lithography, produces a series of unique freestanding structures. The structural features of the products, such as the ability to direct the light path and mimicking of the extracellular matrix enable applications in functional light gratings and cell culture, respectively. Further genetic engineering of the protein component allowed tunable functionalization of these materials, including nanoparticle immobilization and protein conjugation, resulting in broad applications in electronic devices and enzyme immobilization. Our technological platform can drive new advances in biocatalysis, tissue engineering, biomedicine, photonics and electronics.

The advantages of the all-fiber optical current transformer include but are not limited to being small in size, having no magnetic saturation, exhibiting high measurement accuracy, and boasting strong electromagnetic interference resistance. However, the high cost of the all-fiber optical transformer limits its promotion and application in engineering. This paper proposes a design scheme of an independent double acquisition loop for the all-fiber optical current transformer based on the single optical path. Firstly, based on the closed-loop control mode and open-loop control mode, the two- channel sampling signal demand for relay protection, and the independent dual-acquisition loop design scheme of the all-fiber optical current transformer are proposed. Secondly, the reliability and economic feasibility of the scheme are demonstrated by an analysis of system failure and cost. The results show that the scheme can actualize the acquisition function of two independent all-fiber optical current transformer products on a single all-fiber current transformer in an integrated manner, which greatly reduces the cost of the all-fiber optical current transformer in engineering applications. The nitrogen isotope composition of plants (δ15N) can comprehensively reflect information on climate change and ecosystems’ nitrogen cycle. By collecting common herbs and soil samples along the 400 mm isoline of mean annual precipitation (MAP) in the agro-pastoral zone of North China (APZNC) and measuring their δ15N values, the statistical characteristics of foliar δ15N of herbs and the responses of foliar δ15N to the MAP and mean annual temperature (MAT) were analyzed. The results showed that: (1) the δ15N values of all herbs investigated varied from −5.5% to 15.25%. Among them, the δ15N value range of C3 herbs (−5.5~15.00%) was wider than that of C4 herbs (−2.17~15.25%), but the average value (3.27%) of C3 herbs was significantly lower than that of C4 herbaceous plants (5.55%). This difference provides an important method for identifying plants of different photosynthetic types by nitrogen isotope technology. (2) Along the transect from northeast to southwest, the δ15N of both C3 and C4 herbs decreased with the increase in the MAP, but not significantly for C3 herbs. The inverse relationship between the nitrogen isotopic signatures of herbs and MAP is consistent with previous studies. However, the MAP in the APZNC is found to only explain a small amount of the observed variance in the δ15N herbs (C3 herbs: 10.40%; C4 herbs: 25.03%). (3) A strong negative relationship was found between δ15N of herbs and MAT across the transect (C3 herbs: −0.368%/°C; C4 herbs: −0.381%/°C), which was contrary to the global pattern and some regional patterns. There was no significant difference in the δ15N responses of two different photosynthetic herbs to temperature, but the effect of temperature on the variances of δ15N of C3 and C4 herbs was significantly greater than that of precipitation. This suggests that temperature is a key factor affecting foliar δ15N of herbs in this transect. The above findings may be of value to global change researchers studying the processes of the nitrogen cycle and gaining an insight into climate dynamics of the past.

Reinforcement Learning (RL) is gaining much research attention because it allows the system to learn from interacting with the environment. Yet, with all these successful applications, the application of RL in direct joint torque control without the help of an underlining dynamic model is not reported in the literature. This study presents a split network structure that enables successful training of RL to learn the direct torque control for trajectory following a six-axis articulated robot without prior knowledge of the dynamic robot model. The training took a very long time to converge. However, we were able to show the successful control of four different trajectories without needing an accurate dynamics model and complex inverse kinematics computation. To show the RL-based control’s effectiveness, we also compare the RL control with the Model Predictive Control (MPC), another popular trajectory control method. Our results show that while the MPC achieves smoother and more accurate control, it does not automatically treat the singularity. In addition, it requires complex inverse dynamics calculations. On the other hand, the RL controller instinctively avoided the violent action around the singularities.

BackgroundThe immunotherapy of Glioma has always been a research hotspot. Although tumor associated microglia/macrophages (TAMs) proves to be important in glioma progression and drug resistance, our knowledge about how TAMs influence glioma remains unclear. The relationship between glioma and TAMs still needs further study.MethodsWe collected the data of TAMs in glioma from NCBI Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) that included 20 glioma samples and 15 control samples from four datasets. Six genes were screened from the Differential Expression Gene through Gene ontology (GO) analysis, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis, protein–protein interaction (PPI) network and single-cell sequencing analysis. A risk score was then constructed based on the six genes and patients’ overall survival rates of 669 patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The efficacy of the risk score in prognosis and prediction was verified in Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA).ResultsSix genes, including CD163, FPR3, LPAR5, P2ry12, PLAUR, SIGLEC1, that participate in signal transduction and plasma membrane were selected. Half of them, like CD163, FPR3, SIGLEC1, were mainly expression in M2 macrophages. FPR3 and SIGLEC1 were high expression genes in glioma associated with grades and IDH status. The overall survival rates of the high risk score group was significantly lower than that of the low risk score group, especially in LGG.ConclusionJoint usage of the 6 candidate genes may be an effective method to diagnose and evaluate the prognosis of glioma, especially in Low-grade glioma (LGG).

Half-wavelength AC transmission (HWACT) is an ultra-long distance AC transmission technology, whose electrical distance is close to half-wavelength at the system power frequency. It is very important for the construction and operation of HWACT to analyze its fault features and corresponding protection technology. In this paper, the steady-state voltage and current characteristics of the bus bar and fault point and the steady-state overvoltage distribution along the line will be analyzed when a three-phase symmetrical short-circuit fault occurs on an HWACT line. On this basis, the three-phase fault characteristics for longer transmission lines are also studied. Objective: The objective of the present study is to investigate the inhibitory effects of sinomenine (SIN) on angiogenesis in a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mouse model. Methods: Arthritis assessments for all mice were recorded. The histopathological assessments were performed following haematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. Immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analyses were used to detect the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and angiopoietin 1 (ANG-1) in the serum and in the membrane. Immunohistochemistry was employed to detect the synovium microvessel density (MVD). Results: Compared with the CIA model group, SIN significantly ameliorated swelling and erythema extension, decreased the arthritis index, reduced inflammation, cartilage damage and bone erosion, and lessened the number of CD31 positive cells on the synovium. Moreover, the levels of HIF-1α, VEGF and ANG-1 in the synovium and in the peripheral serum were increased in the untreated CIA model group but were significantly reduced in the 30 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg SIN treatment groups. Conclusion: SIN could mitigate CIA by inhibiting angiogenesis, and the mechanism may associate with the HIF-1α–VEGF–ANG-1 axis. Additionally, our study provides a referable experimental basis for the use of SIN for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
