Search

Sketch-based 3D shape retrieval (SBSR) is an important yet challenging task, which has drawn more and more attention in recent years. Existing approaches address the problem in a restricted setting, without appropriately simulating real application scenarios. To mimic the realistic setting, in this track, we adopt large-scale sketches drawn by amateurs of different levels of drawing skills, as well as a variety of 3D shapes including not only CAD models but also models scanned from real objects. We define two SBSR tasks and construct two benchmarks consisting of more than 46,000 CAD models, 1,700 realistic models, and 145,000 sketches in total. Four teams participated in this track and submitted 15 runs for the two tasks, evaluated by 7 commonly-adopted metrics. We hope that, the benchmarks, the comparative results, and the open-sourced evaluation code will foster future research in this direction among the 3D object retrieval community.

As such, they often interact through their surface with other proteins or other cellular ligands such as ions or organic molecules. The evolution generates plenty of different proteins, with unique abilities, but also proteins with related functions hence similar 3D surface properties (shape, physico-chemical properties, …). The protein surfaces are therefore of primary importance for their activity. In the present work, we assess the ability of different methods to detect such similarities based on the geometry of the protein surfaces (described as 3D meshes), using either their shape only, or their shape and the electrostatic potential (a biologically relevant property of proteins surface). Five different groups participated in this contest using the shape-only dataset, and one group extended its pre-existing method to handle the electrostatic potential. Our comparative study reveals both the ability of the methods to detect related proteins and their difficulties to distinguish between highly related proteins. Our study allows also to analyze the putative influence of electrostatic information in addition to the one of protein shapes alone. Finally, the discussion permits to expose the results with respect to ones obtained in the previous contests for the extended method. Temporal action proposal generation (TAPG) is a challenging task, which requires localizing action intervals in an untrimmed video. Intuitively, we as humans, perceive an action through the interactions between actors, relevant objects, and the surrounding environment. Despite the significant progress of TAPG, a vast majority of existing methods ignore the aforementioned principle of the human perceiving process by applying a backbone network into a given video as a black-box. In this paper, we propose to model these interactions with a multi-modal representation network, namely, Actors-Objects-Environment Interaction Network (AOE-Net). Our AOE-Net consists of two modules, i.e., perception-based multi-modal representation (PMR) and boundary-matching module (BMM). Additionally, we introduce adaptive attention mechanism (AAM) in PMR to focus only on main actors (or relevant objects) and model the relationships among them. PMR module represents each video snippet by a visual-linguistic feature, in which main actors and surrounding environment are represented by visual information, whereas relevant objects are depicted by linguistic features through an image-text model. BMM module processes the sequence of visual-linguistic features as its input and generates action proposals. Comprehensive experiments and extensive ablation studies on ActivityNet-1.3 and THUMOS-14 datasets show that our proposed AOE-Net outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods with remarkable performance and generalization for both TAPG and temporal action detection. To prove the robustness and effectiveness of AOE-Net, we further conduct an ablation study on egocentric videos, i.e. EPIC-KITCHENS 100 dataset. Hyperglycemia is commonly seen in critically ill patients. This disorder was also seen in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and was associated with a worse prognosis. The current study determined the prevalence, risk factors, and prognostic implications of hyperglycemia in COVID-19 patients.This was a retrospective observational study performed in an intensive care unit for COVID-19 patients. Electronic data of COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit from August 2nd to October 15th, 2021, were collected. Patients were divided into non-hyperglycemia, hyperglycemia in diabetic patients, and hyperglycemia in non-diabetic patients. Primary outcomes were 28-day and in-hospital mortalities. Multinomial logistic regression and multivariable Cox regression models were used to determine the risk factors for hyperglycemia and mortality, respectively.Hyperglycemia was documented in 65.6% of patients: diabetic patients (44.8%) and new-onset hyperglycemia (20.8%). In-hospital and 28-day mortality rates were 30.2% and 26.1%, respectively. Respiratory failure, corticosteroid therapy, and a higher level of procalcitonin were risk factors for hyperglycemia in diabetic patients, whereas cardiovascular diseases, respiratory failure, and higher aspartate aminotransferase/glutamate aminotransferase ratio were risk factors for hyperglycemia in non-diabetic patients. The risk of the 28-day mortality rate was highest in the new-onset hyperglycemia (hazard ratio [HR] 3.535, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.338-9.338, p=0.011), which was higher than hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients (HR 1.408, 95% CI 0.513-3.862, p=0.506).Hyperglycemia was common in COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit. Hyperglycemia reflected the disease severity but was also secondary to therapeutic intervention. New-onset hyperglycemia was associated with poorer outcomes than that in diabetic patients.

In this paper, we investigate the interesting yet challenging problem of camouflaged instance segmentation. To this end, we first annotate the available CAMO dataset at the instance level. We also embed the data augmentation in order to increase the number of training samples. Then, we train different state-of-the-art instance segmentation on the CAMO-instance data. Last but not least, we develop an interactive user interface which demonstrates the performance of different state-of-the-art instance segmentation methods on the task of camouflaged instance segmentation. The users are able to compare the results of different methods on the given input images. Our work is expected to push the envelope of the camouflage analysis problem.

In this paper, we introduce a practical system for interactive video object mask annotation, which can support multiple back-end methods. To demonstrate the generalization of our system, we introduce a novel approach for video object annotation. Our proposed system takes scribbles at a chosen key-frame from the end-users via a user-friendly interface and produces masks of corresponding objects at the key-frame via the Control-Point-based Scribbles-to-Mask (CPSM) module. The object masks at the key-frame are then propagated to other frames and refined through the Multi-Referenced Guided Segmentation (MRGS) module. Last but not least, the user can correct wrong segmentation at some frames, and the corrected mask is continuously propagated to other frames in the video via the MRGS to produce the object masks at all video frames.

A rapid and sensitive High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-tandem Mass Spectrometry (HPLC/MS/MS) method for determining apremilast in beagle dog plasma and urine samples was developed and validated using clopidogrel as the internal standard (IS). Apremilast was extracted from the plasma and urine samples by liquid–liquid extraction using methyl tert-butyl ether. Chromatographic separation was performed using a C8 column with gradient elution and a mobile phase containing methanol and 0.1% formic acid. Quantification was achieved in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode with a transition of m/z 461.3→178.2 for apremilast and m/z 322.2→184.1 for clopidogrel (IS). This method was validated regarding its specificity, linearity, precision, accuracy, and stability. The lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) for this method was 5 ng/mL, and the calibration curve was linear over 5–1,000 ng/mL. The intra- and inter-run coefficients of variance (CV) of aprelimast in plasma samples were less than 12.92% and 10.64%, respectively, while in urine samples, the CV were less than 11.84% and 10.20%, respectively. The samples were stable under the tested conditions. This method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study in beagle dogs following oral administration of 10 mg of apremilast.

Building a retrieval system with lifelogging data is more complicated than with ordinary data due to the redundancies, blurriness, massive amount of data, various sources of information accompanying lifelogging data, and especially the ad-hoc nature of queries. The Lifelog Search Challenge (LSC) is a benchmarking challenge that encourages researchers and developers to push the boundaries in lifelog retrieval. For LSC'22, we develop FIRST 3.0, a novel and flexible system that leverages expressive cross-domain embeddings to enhance the searching process. Our system aims to adaptively capture the semantics of an image at different levels of detail. We also propose to augment our system with an external search engine to help our system with initial visual examples for unfamiliar concepts. Finally, we organize image data in hierarchical clusters based on their visual similarity and location to assist users in data exploration. Experiments show that our system is both fast and effective in handling various retrieval scenarios.

This paper presents the methods that have participated in the SHREC 2022 track on the fitting and recognition of simple geometric primitives on point clouds. As simple primitives we mean the classical surface primitives derived from constructive solid geometry, i.e., planes, spheres, cylinders, cones and tori. The aim of the track is to evaluate the quality of automatic algorithms for fitting and recognising geometric primitives on point clouds. Specifically, the goal is to identify, for each point cloud, its primitive type and some geometric descriptors. For this purpose, we created a synthetic dataset, divided into a training set and a test set, containing segments perturbed with different kinds of point cloud artifacts. Among the six participants to this track, two are based on direct methods, while four are either fully based on deep learning or combine direct and neural approaches. The performance of the methods is evaluated using various classification and approximation measures.

This paper describes the methods submitted for evaluation to the SHREC 2022 track on pothole and crack detection in the road pavement. A total of 7 different runs for the semantic segmentation of the road surface are compared, 6 from the participants plus a baseline method. All methods exploit Deep Learning techniques and their performance is tested using the same environment (i.e.: a single Jupyter notebook). A training set, composed of 3836 semantic segmentation image/mask pairs and 797 RGB-D video clips collected with the latest depth cameras was made available to the participants. The methods are then evaluated on the 496 image/mask pairs in the validation set, on the 504 pairs in the test set and finally on 8 video clips. The analysis of the results is based on quantitative metrics for image segmentation and qualitative analysis of the video clips. The participation and the results show that the scenario is of great interest and that the use of RGB-D data is still challenging in this context.

Temporal action proposal generation (TAPG) aims to estimate temporal intervals of actions in untrimmed videos, which is a challenging yet plays an important role in many tasks of video analysis and understanding. Despite the great achievement in TAPG, most existing works ignore the human perception of interaction between agents and the surrounding environment by applying a deep learning model as a black-box to the untrimmed videos to extract video visual representation. Therefore, it is beneficial and potentially improve the performance of TAPG if we can capture these interactions between agents and the environment. In this paper, we propose a novel framework named Agent-Aware Boundary Network (ABN), which consists of two sub-networks (i) an Agent-Aware Representation Network to obtain both agent-agent and agents-environment relationships in the video representation, and (ii) a Boundary Generation Network to estimate the confidence score of temporal intervals. In the Agent-Aware Representation Network, the interactions between agents are expressed through local pathway, which operates at a local level to focus on the motions of agents whereas the overall perception of the surroundings are expressed through global pathway, which operates at a global level to perceive the effects of agents-environment. Comprehensive evaluations on 20-action THUMOS-14 and 200-action ActivityNet-1.3 datasets with different backbone networks (i.e C3D, SlowFast and Two-Stream) show that our proposed ABN robustly outperforms state-of-the-art methods regardless of the employed backbone network on TAPG. We further examine the proposal quality by leveraging proposals generated by our method onto temporal action detection (TAD) frameworks and evaluate their detection performances. Identifying stress level can provide valuable data for mental health analytics as well as labels for annotation systems. Although much research has been conducted into stress detection models using heart rate variability at a higher cost of data collection, there is a lack of research on the potential of using low-resolution Electrodermal Activity (EDA) signals from consumer-grade wearable devices to identify stress patterns. In this paper, we concentrate on performing statistical analyses on the stress detection capability of two popular approaches of training stress detection models with stress-related biometric signals: user-dependent and user-independent models. Our research manages to show that user-dependent models are statistically more accurate for stress detection. In terms of effectiveness assessment, the balanced accuracy (BA) metric is employed to evaluate the capability of distinguishing stress and non-stress conditions of the models trained on either low-resolution or high-resolution Electrodermal Activity (EDA) signals. The results from the experiment show that training the model with (comparatively low-cost) low-resolution EDA signal does not affect the stress detection accuracy of the model significantly compared to using a high-resolution EDA signal. Our research results demonstrate the potential of attaching the user-dependent stress detection model trained on personal low-resolution EDA signal recorded to collect data in daily life to provide users with personal stress level insight and analysis.

This paper presents the outcomes of a contest organized to evaluate methods for the online recognition of heterogeneous gestures from sequences of 3D hand poses. The task is the detection of gestures belonging to a dictionary of 16 classes characterized by different pose and motion features. The dataset features continuous sequences of hand tracking data where the gestures are interleaved with non-significant motions. The data have been captured using the Hololens 2 finger tracking system in a realistic use-case of mixed reality interaction. The evaluation is based not only on the detection performances but also on the latency and the false positives, making it possible to understand the feasibility of practical interaction tools based on the algorithms proposed. The outcomes of the contest's evaluation demonstrate the necessity of further research to reduce recognition errors, while the computational cost of the algorithms proposed is sufficiently low., Accepted on Computer & Graphics journal

In this paper, we introduce LifeSeeker 4.0 - an interactive lifelog retrieval system developed for the fifth annual Lifelog Search Challenge (LSC'22). In LifeSeeker 4.0, we focus on enhancing our previous system to allow users who have little to no knowledge of underlying system functioning and lifelog data to use it with ease by employing a Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) model. Furthermore, we have exploited the music metadata to facilitate searches that may incorporate emotion. Event clustering is also improved in this version to increase user experience by reducing the occurrence of repeated images, and hence decreasing the search time.

According to the World Federation of the Deaf, more than two hundred sign languages exist. Therefore, it is challenging to understand deaf individuals, even proficient sign language users, resulting in a barrier between the deaf community and the rest of society. To bridge this language barrier, we propose a novel multilingual communication system, namely MUGCAT, to improve the communication efficiency of sign language users. By converting recognized specific hand gestures into expressive pictures, which is universal usage and language independence, our MUGCAT system significantly helps deaf people convey their thoughts. To overcome the limitation of sign language usage, which is mostly impossible to translate into complete sentences for ordinary people, we propose to reconstruct meaningful sentences from the incomplete translation of sign language. We also measure the semantic similarity of generated sentences with fragmented recognized hand gestures to keep the original meaning. Experimental results show that the proposed system can work in a real-time manner and synthesize exquisite stunning illustrations and meaningful sentences from a few hand gestures of sign language. This proves that our MUGCAT has promising potential in assisting deaf communication.

For the fifth time since 2018, the Lifelog Search Challenge (LSC) facilitated a benchmarking exercise to compare interactive search systems designed for multimodal lifelogs. LSC'22 attracted nine participating research groups who developed interactive lifelog retrieval systems enabling fast and effective access to lifelogs. The systems competed in front of a hybrid audience at the LSC workshop at ACM ICMR'22. This paper presents an introduction to the LSC workshop, the new (larger) dataset used in the competition, and introduces the participating lifelog search systems.

While Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has played an essential role in infant brain analysis, segmenting MRI into a number of tissues such as gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is crucial and complex due to the extremely low intensity contrast between tissues at around 6-9 months of age as well as amplified noise, myelination, and incomplete volume. In this paper, we tackle those limitations by developing a new deep learning model, named DAM-AL, which contains two main contributions, i.e., dilated attention mechanism and hard-case attention loss. Our DAM-AL network is designed with skip block layers and atrous block convolution. It contains both channel-wise attention at high-level context features and spatial attention at low-level spatial structural features. Our attention loss consists of two terms corresponding to region information and hard samples attention. Our proposed DAM-AL has been evaluated on the infant brain iSeg 2017 dataset and the experiments have been conducted on both validation and testing sets. We have benchmarked DAM-AL on Dice coefficient and ASD metrics and compared it with state-of-the-art methods.

In this paper, we present the interactive lifelog retrieval engine developed for the LSC'21 comparative benchmarking challenge. The LifeSeeker 3.0 interactive lifelog retrieval engine is an enhanced version of our previous system participating in LSC'20 - LifeSeeker 2.0. The system is developed by both Dublin City University and the Ho Chi Minh City University of Science. The implementation of LifeSeeker 3.0 focuses on searching and filtering by text query using a weighted Bag-of-Words model with visual concept augmentation and three weighted vocabularies. The visual similarity search is improved using a bag of local convolutional features; while improving the previous version's performance, enhancing query processing time, result displaying, and browsing support.

Camouflaged objects attempt to conceal their texture into the background and discriminating them from the background is hard even for human beings. The main objective of this paper is to explore the camouflaged object segmentation problem, namely, segmenting the camouflaged object(s) for a given image. This problem has not been well studied in spite of a wide range of potential applications including the preservation of wild animals and the discovery of new species, surveillance systems, search-and-rescue missions in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or hurricanes. This paper addresses a new challenging problem of camouflaged object segmentation. To address this problem, we provide a new image dataset of camouflaged objects for benchmarking purposes. In addition, we propose a general end-to-end network, called the Anabranch Network, that leverages both classification and segmentation tasks. Different from existing networks for segmentation, our proposed network possesses the second branch for classification to predict the probability of containing camouflaged object(s) in an image, which is then fused into the main branch for segmentation to boost up the segmentation accuracy. Document vectorization with an appropriate encoding scheme is an essential component in various document processing tasks, including text document classification, retrieval, or generation. Training a dedicated document in a specific domain may require large enough data and sufficient resource. This motivates us to propose a novel document representation scheme with two main components. First, we train TD2V, a generic pre-trained document embedding for English documents from more than one million tweets in Twitter. Second, we propose a domain adaptation process with adversarial training to adapt TD2V to different domains. To classify a document, we use the rank list of its similar documents using query expansion techniques, either Average Query Expansion or Discriminative Query Expansion. Experiments on datasets from different online sources show that by using TD2V only, our method can classify documents with better accuracy than existing methods. By applying adversarial adaptation process, we can further boost and achieve the accuracy on BBC, BBCSport, Amazon4, 20NewsGroup datasets. We also evaluate our method on a specific domain of sensitivity classification and achieve the accuracy of higher than $$95\%$$ even with a short text fragment having 1024 characters on 5 datasets: Snowden, Mormon, Dyncorp, TM, and Enron.

Flow-based generative models have recently become one of the most efficient approaches to model data generation. Indeed, they are constructed with a sequence of invertible and tractable transformations. Glow first introduced a simple type of generative flow using an invertible 1×1 convolution. However, the 1×1 convolution suffers from limited flexibility compared to the standard convolutions. In this paper, we propose a novel invertible n×n convolution approach that overcomes the limitations of the invertible 1×1 convolution. In addition, our proposed network is not only tractable and invertible but also uses fewer parameters than standard convolutions. The experiments on CIFAR-10, ImageNet and Celeb-HQ datasets, have shown that our invertible n×n convolution helps to improve the performance of generative models significantly.

Asbestos is a known human carcinogen and the chief known cause of mesothelioma. In 1997, a group of experts developed the Helsinki Criteria, which established criteria for attribution of mesothelioma to asbestos. The criteria include two methods for causation attribution: 1) a history of significant occupational, domestic, or environmental exposure and/or 2) pathologic evidence of exposure to asbestos. In 2014, the Helsinki Criteria were updated, and these attribution criteria were not changed. However, since the Helsinki Criteria were first released in 1997, some pathologists, cell biologists, and others have claimed that a history of exposure cannot establish causation unless the lung asbestos fiber burden exceeds “the background range for the laboratory in question to attribute mesothelioma cases to exposure to asbestos.” This practice ignores the impact on fiber burden of clearance/translocation over time, which in part is why the Helsinki Criteria concluded that a history of exposure to asbestos was independently sufficient to attribute causation to asbestos. After reviewing the Helsinki Criteria, we conclude that their methodology is fatally flawed because a quantitative assessment of a background lung tissue fiber level cannot be established. The flaws of the Helsinki Criteria are both technical and substantive. The 1995 paper that served as the scientific basis for establishing background levels used inconsistent methods to determine exposures in controls and cases. In addition, historic controls cannot be used to establish background fiber levels for current cases because ambient exposures to asbestos have decreased over time and control cases pre-date current cases by decades. The use of scanning electron microscope (SEM) compounded the non-compatibility problem; the applied SEM cannot distinguish talc from anthophyllite because it cannot perform selected area electron diffraction, which is a crucial identifier in ATEM for distinguishing the difference between serpentine asbestos, amphibole asbestos, and talc.

This study investigated the possibility of using remotely sensed data and field surveys for understanding the environmental management practices in two Ramsar sites - U Minh Thong and Tram Chim national parks - in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. Enhanced agriculture, infrastructure development, changes in hydrological regime, forest fires, and natural resources exploitation are the key variables that caused the depletion of these two wetland areas. Land cover, particularly vegetation coverage, has been changed considerably during the post-war period and agriculture has been intensified in the surrounding areas of U Minh Thuong and Tram Chim wetlands. The current water management strategies in U Minh Thuong and Tram Chim were designated to ensure proper water circulation during the dry and wet seasons in a way helpful to agriculture in the buffer zones and to prevent forest fires during the dry season. It is found that the water management strategies to prevent forest fires in both the parks resulted in the accumulation of toxic agrochemicals within the park during the wet season. Both U Minh Thuong and Tram Chim wetlands are invaded by alien plant species which is threatening the natural biodiversity of the area. Proper monitoring and control of invasive species is necessary for protecting the natural biodiversity of these wetland ecosystems. Proper law enforcement and an interactive and inclusive wetland management should be practiced in order to conserve these valuable wetland ecosystems.

Temporal action proposal generation is an essential and challenging task that aims at localizing temporal intervals containing human actions in untrimmed videos. Most of existing approaches are unable to follow the human cognitive process of understanding the video context due to lack of attention mechanism to express the concept of an action or an agent who performs the action or the interaction between the agent and the environment. Based on the action definition that a human, known as an agent, interacts with the environment and performs an action that affects the environment, we propose a contextual Agent-Environment Network. Our proposed contextual AEN involves (i) agent pathway, operating at a local level to tell about which humans/agents are acting and (ii) environment pathway operating at a global level to tell about how the agents interact with the environment. Comprehensive evaluations on 20-action THUMOS-14 and 200-action ActivityNet-1.3 datasets with different backbone networks, i.e C3D and SlowFast, show that our method robustly exhibits outperformance against state-of-the-art methods regardless of the employed backbone network., Accepted in ICASSP 2021

Multi-Camera Multiple Object Tracking (MC-MOT) is a significant computer vision problem due to its emerging applicability in several real-world applications. Despite a large number of existing works, solving the data association problem in any MC-MOT pipeline is arguably one of the most challenging tasks. Developing a robust MC-MOT system, however, is still highly challenging due to many practical issues such as inconsistent lighting conditions, varying object movement patterns, or the trajectory occlusions of the objects between the cameras. To address these problems, this work, therefore, proposes a new Dynamic Graph Model with Link Prediction (DyGLIP) approach to solve the data association task. Compared to existing methods, our new model offers several advantages, including better feature representations and the ability to recover from lost tracks during camera transitions. Moreover, our model works gracefully regardless of the overlapping ratios between the cameras. Experimental results show that we outperform existing MC-MOT algorithms by a large margin on several practical datasets. Notably, our model works favorably on online settings but can be extended to an incremental approach for large-scale datasets., accepted at CVPR 2021

This paper pushes the envelope on decomposing camouflaged regions in an image into meaningful components, namely, camouflaged instances. To promote the new task of camouflaged instance segmentation of in-the-wild images, we introduce a dataset, dubbed CAMO++, that extends our preliminary CAMO dataset (camouflaged object segmentation) in terms of quantity and diversity. The new dataset substantially increases the number of images with hierarchical pixel-wise ground truths. We also provide a benchmark suite for the task of camouflaged instance segmentation. In particular, we present an extensive evaluation of state-of-the-art instance segmentation methods on our newly constructed CAMO++ dataset in various scenarios. We also present a camouflage fusion learning (CFL) framework for camouflaged instance segmentation to further improve the performance of state-of-the-art methods. The talc industry and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have asserted that talc has been asbestos-free since 1976 when the industry created a voluntary specification for the asbestos content of cosmetic talc. However, recent evidence reveals that cosmetic talc is not and never was asbestos-free. This narrative review examines the talc industry’s role in delaying and ultimately blocking federal regulation of cosmetic talc from the 1970s to today. We review primary source material, including corporate documents released in recent litigation and FDA documents released in response to Freedom of Information Act requests. Our results indicate that the talc industry exerted considerable influence over three key areas: regulatory proceedings at the FDA; testing methods and the manipulation of test results (including undisclosed results); and press coverage and the medical literature. The talc companies’ actions and FDA indifference have had a lasting effect on consumer health, including the regulation of talc by other government agencies.

Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy has been an active field of research motivated by the large number of highly lethal GI cancers. Early GI cancer precursors are often missed during the endoscopic surveillance. The high missed rate of such abnormalities during endoscopy is thus a critical bottleneck. Lack of attentiveness due to tiring procedures, and requirement of training are few contributing factors. An automatic GI disease classification system can help reduce such risks by flagging suspicious frames and lesions. GI endoscopy consists of several multi-organ surveillance, therefore, there is need to develop methods that can generalize to various endoscopic findings. In this realm, we present a comprehensive analysis of the Medico GI challenges: Medical Multimedia Task at MediaEval 2017, Medico Multimedia Task at MediaEval 2018, and BioMedia ACM MM Grand Challenge 2019. These challenges are initiative to set-up a benchmark for different computer vision methods applied to the multi-class endoscopic images and promote to build new approaches that could reliably be used in clinics. We report the performance of 21 participating teams over a period of three consecutive years and provide a detailed analysis of the methods used by the participants, highlighting the challenges and shortcomings of the current approaches and dissect their credibility for the use in clinical settings. Our analysis revealed that the participants achieved an improvement on maximum Mathew correlation coefficient (MCC) from 82.68% in 2017 to 93.98% in 2018 and 95.20% in 2019 challenges, and a significant increase in computational speed over consecutive years.

Gesture recognition is a fundamental tool to enable novel interaction paradigms in a variety of application scenarios like Mixed Reality environments, touchless public kiosks, entertainment systems, and more. Recognition of hand gestures can be nowadays performed directly from the stream of hand skeletons estimated by software provided by low-cost trackers (Ultraleap) and MR headsets (Hololens, Oculus Quest) or by video processing software modules (e.g. Google Mediapipe). Despite the recent advancements in gesture and action recognition from skeletons, it is unclear how well the current state-of-the-art techniques can perform in a real-world scenario for the recognition of a wide set of heterogeneous gestures, as many benchmarks do not test online recognition and use limited dictionaries. This motivated the proposal of the SHREC 2021: Track on Skeleton-based Hand Gesture Recognition in the Wild. For this contest, we created a novel dataset with heterogeneous gestures featuring different types and duration. These gestures have to be found inside sequences in an online recognition scenario. This paper presents the result of the contest, showing the performances of the techniques proposed by four research groups on the challenging task compared with a simple baseline method.

3D scene shape retrieval is a brand new but important research direction in content-based 3D shape retrieval. To promote this research area, two Shape Retrieval Contest (SHREC) tracks on 2D scene sketch-based and image-based 3D scene model retrieval have been organized by us in 2018 and 2019, respectively. In 2018, we built the first benchmark for each track which contains 2D and 3D scene data for ten (10) categories, while they share the same 3D scene target dataset. Four and five distinct 3D scene shape retrieval methods have competed with each other in these two contests, respectively. In 2019, to measure and compare the scalability performance of the participating and other promising Query-by-Sketch or Query-by-Image 3D scene shape retrieval methods, we built a much larger extended benchmark for each type of retrieval which has thirty (30) classes and organized two extended tracks. Again, two and three different 3D scene shape retrieval methods have contended in these two tracks, separately. To solicit state-of-the-art approaches, we perform a comprehensive comparison of all the above methods and an additional new retrieval methods by evaluating them on the two benchmarks. Lifelog can provide useful insights of our daily activities. It is essential to provide a flexible way for users to retrieve certain events or moments of interest, corresponding to a wide variation of query types. This motivates us to develop FIRST, a Flexible Interactive Retrieval SysTem, to help users to combine or integrate various query components in a flexible manner to handle different query scenarios, such as visual clustering data based on color histogram, visual similarity, GPS location, or scene attributes. We also employ personalized concept detection and image captioning to enhance image understanding from visual lifelog data, and develop an autoencoder-like approach for query text and image feature mapping. Furthermore, we refine the user interface of the retrieval system to better assist users in query expansion and verifying sequential events in a flexible temporal resolution to control the navigation speed through sequences of images.

In this paper we present our interactive lifelog retrieval engine in the LSC’20 comparative benchmarking challenge. The LifeSeeker 2.0 interactive lifelog retrieval engine is developed by both Dublin City University and Ho Chi Minh University of Science, which represents an enhanced version of the two corresponding interactive lifelog retrieval engines in LSC’19. The implementation of LifeSeeker 2.0 has been designed to focus on the searching by text query using a Bag-of-Words model with visual concept augmentation and additional improvements in query processing time, enhanced result display and browsing support, and interacting with visual graphs for both query and filter purposes.

The Lifelog Search Challenge (LSC) is an international content retrieval competition that evaluates search for personal lifelog data. At the LSC, content-based search is performed over a multi-modal dataset, continuously recorded by a lifelogger over 27 days, consisting of multimedia content, biometric data, human activity data, and information activities data. In this work, we report on the first LSC that took place in Yokohama, Japan in 2018 as a special workshop at ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval 2018 (ICMR 2018). We describe the general idea of this challenge, summarise the participating search systems as well as the evaluation procedure, and analyse the search performance of the teams in various aspects. We try to identify reasons why some systems performed better than others and provide an outlook as well as open issues for upcoming iterations of the challenge.
