Research Questions: Can social media reach isolated domestic abuse victims? Secondly, does providing victims with more information and a safer means of contacting police change their likelihood of domestic abuse reporting? Data: This research is based on high-frequency and confidential administrative data on the population of domestic abuse calls during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic but also the preceding years from two police forces—the Thames Valley Police (TVP) and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). Methods: To answer the research questions, we ran a randomized control trial (RCT) using a novel social media campaign promoting a method of reporting through Facebook and Instagram. We randomized the treatment across geographic areas in one police force and across individuals in another police force. Findings: We found that while social media is an effective tool for engaging on domestic abuse topics, particularly with younger individuals, our intention-to-treat estimates between the treatment and control areas and individuals did not show any significant difference in domestic abuse reporting. One of the reasons to explain this finding was the geographically imprecise social media targeting features on Facebook. Conclusions: Our research contributes to the scarce experimental literature on how to increase domestic abuse reporting among victims with, to the best of our knowledge, the first randomized test of the effects of a social media campaign on engagement and reporting. As police forces across the UK, but also worldwide, start using social media more to engage with the citizens they serve, these results provide interesting and valuable implications for their effectiveness and the role of technology in the future policing. Our results contribute to the understanding of how police forces can use social media to reach specific groups of people, such as younger cohorts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the last decades, Nigerian migrant women in the European sex market, described as victims of trafficking, have generated consistent concern and outrage. This article analyzes data from an ethnographic study of more than 800 Nigerian sex workers in southern Spain, describing the networks used by these women to carry out their migration projects and the relationships they establish with their agents. Thus, it contributes to refuting the hegemonic narrative about trafficking and its victims by contrasting it with data collected and systematized over almost a decade of participant observation and informal conversation. This paper argues that the stereotypical image of the Nigerian migrant women as victims of abuse and violence by transnational trafficking networks functions to justify strict migration-control policies and the denial of labor rights to sex workers. As an antidote to the dominance of narratives based on stereotypes and pseudoscientific claims, this paper underscores the urgent need for ethnographic research and its focus on emic (participant) perspectives. The goal is to develop tailored and effective policies and practices for the prevention of and intervention in migrant women's experience of exploitation, abuse, and violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bullying, harassment, and sexual harassment in the workplace are not new issues; they have always existed in various forms. Recent studies have highlighted their impacts on workers and their well-being at work. However, the perception of these problems differ across the United States, Europe, and Asia. These differences are reflected not only in terms of sensitivities, workplace policies, and relevant laws, but also in the language/vocabulary used to designate the same. Psychological harassment is a bitter issue for many who are affected by it. Unfortunately, it remains a less popular topic in academic research. This may be due to the sensitivity associated with the topic, the possible shame and value judgements of those involved, and the myriad cultural differences that complicate its perceptions. This study deals with the characteristics of psychological harassment in workplaces across Hungary and Slovakia. It addresses the following questions: How are the sources of psychological bullying perceived in the two countries, how do victims tolerate the abuse they are subjected to, and what factors influence the same. The study also examines whether the company's tools for combating psychological bullying in the workplace have an impact on an employee's decision to leave the organization as a result of mobbing. It conducted quantitative surveys involving 500 Hungarian and 108 Slovakian employees. The results were analyzed by the authors using SPSS version 28 with univariate and multivariate statistical methods. Frequency analysis, ANOVA, T- test and factor analysis, among others, were performed. The results show that the perception of the sources of psychological bullying and the tolerance of the related phenomena depend on a number of personal factors. However, the tools that firms use to deal with mobbing do not necessarily play a determining role in an employee's decision to leave their workplace following psychological harassment. ABUSE of older people ,OLDER people ,FAMILY support ,HUMAN rights violations ,SOCIAL networks ,VICTIMS of abuse - Abstract
Introduction: This paper addresses the broader issue of elder abuse and seeks to analyse how victims and non-victims of abuse connect and explain the perception of ageing and the phenomenon of violence against older people. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted based on evidence gathered through 45 semi-structured interviews with people aged 60 or above who are part of the Portuguese EPIPorto population cohort. The interviews were analysed using grounded theory. Results/discussion: The results show that respondents link the ageist narratives that exist in our societies to the prevalence and naturalisation of violence against older people, that the risk of abuse increases with the weakening of family support networks, and that abuse is both a manifestation of asymmetrical power relations between victims and perpetrators and a severe violation of human rights. The findings also highlight the need to broaden the concept of violence against older people to include offences in the public sphere and not just in the context of the family and institutions. This essay argues that neuroscientific knowledge of trauma should be utilized to address injustices experienced by survivors of sexual assault (SA) in the courtroom and introduces a new feminist and victim-centered bioethical framework. Survivors face several injustices during a SA trial. Rape myths and victim stereotypes, which stem from gender discrimination, create unrealistic expectations for survivors' behaviors and engender epistemic injustices. Other injustices are inherent to SA trials. Notably, the justice system fails to protect survivors and actually harms them by granting them little agency while risking secondary victimization. Many injustices experienced by survivors are linked to their reactions to trauma during and after the SA. However, neuroscientists have an extensive understanding of trauma, and they shed light on its mechanisms, effects, and consequences. Neuroscientific knowledge of trauma can improve survivors' experience in the courtroom through two core means: educating stakeholders and implementing trauma-sensitive and trauma-informed practices in the justice system. A traditional evidence-based framework aims to balance the defendant's rights and society's interest in justice, hence eclipsing the survivor's interests. An evidential framework appears inefficient for discussing survivors' experiences in the courtroom. Consequently, a new feminist and victim-centered bioethical framework is introduced as it allows for a focus on survivors' health needs and well-being without compromising the justice system's need for fairness. The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction aims to protect children from international abduction and establish uniform procedures to ensure prompt return to their habitual country. The Convention requires judges to weigh the divergent goals of protecting children and respecting state sovereignty when the taking-parent alleges grave risk to the child. This Note focuses on the difficulty American courts have when determining whether there is a sufficiently grave risk to a child, particularly when judges must consider cultural attributes of the habitual state. This Note advocates that American courts abandon application of ameliorative measures and consideration of protective abilities to better protect victims of abuse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RAGPICKERS , *POOR people , *LIVING conditions , *VICTIMS of abuse - Abstract
Rag picker, is a term for someone who makes a living by rummaging through refuse in the streets to collect material for salvage. Scraps of cloth and paper could be turned into cardboard, broken glass could be melted down and reused, and even dead cats and dogs could be skinned to make clothes. In India alone, there are approximately 4 million women in this profession. However, this huge number in no way implies that it is a comfortable profession in any way. Some common problems faced by the rag pickers are, Poor and marginalized, Unhealthy environment, Poor living condition and Victims of abuse. The main purpose of this paper is to find out the extent of population engaged in rag picking world wide and the nature of social, health problems they face. The paper also reflects on the interventions tried out to uplift the rag pickers in different parts of the world. This study aims to hold out a systematic scientific review of national and international literature reporting different skill and vocational training programmes and elucidate their effectiveness in improving the job opportunities and living conditions of various marginalized, vulnerable and underprivileged people group. There has been an uptick in recent years, in the number of rape cases in India. According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), India documented 24,206 rape incidents in 2011, which is only the top of the iceberg. Based on data from the National Crime Record Bureau's official website, the current study attempts to create a correlation between rape instances of women and girls in India in the year 2020 - age group wise (above and below 18). For a better data analysis, we employed pie charts. According to the findings, there is no correlation between rape cases involving women over 18-year-old and involving under-18-year-old girls. Furthermore, there is no association between the two. ANOVA is also utilized to obtain information about the relationship between rape instances involving girls and women in various age groups. The article is about ecclesiastical abuses in Latin America and how victims have faced difficulties in being heard and recognized in powerful churches with a strong clerical environment. The importance of survivor networks in the fight for justice and visibility of sexual abuses is highlighted. Actions carried out by the Church in the region that have covered up sexual abuses are also mentioned, as well as actions taken by the Vatican to combat abuses. Additionally, the importance of having protocols and guidelines to address this problem is mentioned, as well as the need to renew trust in interpersonal relationships within the Church and to face reality in a comprehensive manner. ALCOHOLISM , *ALCOHOL drinking , *DATA libraries , *ALCOHOL , *BACK orders , *VICTIMS of abuse - Abstract
Alcoholism is a health defect that knows no borders, affecting people of all ages, genders, races, body types, and religious beliefs. Numerous research studies have been conducted since alcoholism was formalized as a dangerous addiction to investigate its origins and risk factors. While there is no one-size-fits-all formula for categorizing a person's alcohol intake, research has revealed that several factors influence alcohol misuse, particularly among youth worldwide, considered to be the most vulnerable victims of alcohol abuse. Alcoholism can strike suddenly and brutally or take time to develop. With the growing consciousness of the severe ill effects of regular alcoholism, various treatment alternatives are ready to support anyone bringing their life back in order, irrespective of how or when the problem with alcohol began. This study presents the current alcohol consumption status among the youth of pan India as an indicator and motivator for influencing alcohol abuse among youth. Material and methods: The study's goal is to present valid data to signify the severity of India's alcohol addiction among the youth. Data collection is done through official/authentic data repositories available for public use, news articles and contemporary research articles. Conclusions: The research indicates immediate enforcement of India's law to eliminate adolescent/youth alcohol addiction. It emphasizes creating sufficient awareness of the evil effects of alcoholism and the damage to life that it causes among the pan-Indian youth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SHAME , *GOD , *GODS , *LOVE of God , *VICTIMS of abuse , *ALTRUISM - Abstract
Till We Have Faces is a retelling of the Cupid/Psyche myth with a few twists, namely, a nonstandard narrator and the inability of Psyche's sister, Orual, to see the palace. Both innovations lead the reader to understand better the dynamics at play in Orual's effort to disrupt Psyche's life with her husband/god. The inability to see, on Orual's part, at first suggests that the nature of the story is primarily epistemological. What is it that can be reasonably known or inferred? Digging deeper, however, reveals that the epistemic elements are actually penultimate, and that instead the book bolsters an ethically robust epistemology. Who we are deeply affects what we can see. Before Orual could apprehend the nature of the gods, she had to be brutally honest about who she herself was. A victim of abuse who was constantly shamed for reasons beyond her control, she is a sympathetic character in several ways, but she gradually moves from being victim to victimizer, treating others as means to ends, and, in the case of Psyche, 'loving' her in a way that was more hate than love. Self-knowledge was needed for Orual to apprehend the truth. She comes to realize her treatment of Bardia, Batta, Redival, and especially Psyche was not as pure and altruistic as she had thought. She had to come to terms with the ugliness within herself, and her penchant for consuming others, before she could hope to see the beauty and love of the gods for what they were. The interventions used to prevent or treat violence against children, particularly sexual abuse, tend to only consider the target audience as their main source of data. We tested the effect of an online training for school staff members in Europe through three studies. In Study I, we interviewed 5 adult women (Mage = 49.2, SD = 5.81) who were victims of sexual abuse during childhood to assess what school could have done during that time to protect them. Through Study II, we collected data on 66 school staff members to assess feasibility (based on quantitative indicators) and to explore the changes they would make to their everyday practice due to the training course (using qualitative analysis). In Study III, we used network analysis to assess to what extent the actions described by school staff in Study II met the needs expressed by the victims in Study I. Findings of Study I revealed new proposals from the victims' perspective, such as working with the perpetrators. Study II showed the feasibility of training and identified five types of action that school staff members will include in their everyday working dynamics due to the training: detection (e.g., Greater attention to relationships with peers), reporting (e.g., Now I know that suspecting a case of child abuse is enough to report), everyday practices (e.g., Introducing a calming space), changes at school level (e.g., Propose the training course to the school management team) or practices that could belong to more than one category (e.g., Greater awareness of the activities undertaken by the school). Study III provided evidence that some of these changes (e.g., reporting without looking for proof) were in line with some of the victims' expectations (e.g., listen to the children). We also identified gaps that need to be further developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Elder abuse is prevalent and associated with ill-health. However, health care providers often lack education about elder abuse and older patients' victimization often remains unknown to them. In this pilot study we performed initial testing of an educational model aiming at improving health care providers' preparedness to care for older adults subjected to abuse, or more specifically their self-reported propensity to ask older patients questions about abuse and perceived ability to manage the response. Methods: The educational model consisted of a full training day about elder abuse, including theory, group discussions and forum theatre. Forum theatre is an interactive form of drama in which participants are not only observers, but rather spect-actors, urged to participate in the scene. They are thereby given the opportunity to discuss and practise difficult health care encounters. Medical interns (intervention group n = 16, control group n = 14) in Sweden participated in the study and a mixed method convergent parallel design was used. Quantitative data was collected at baseline and 6 months post-intervention using a questionnaire (the REAGERA-P). Qualitative interviews were conducted with four of the participants in the intervention group and data was analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The reported frequency of asking older patients questions about abuse increased in the intervention group (p = 0.047), but not the control group (p = 0.38) post-intervention. Potential mediators for the improvement were an increased awareness of elder abuse and higher self-efficacy for asking questions about elder abuse. Participants also reported a higher perceived ability to manage cases of elder abuse, even though uncertainties concerning how to provide the best possible care remained. The qualitative interviews indicated that learning from each other in group discussions and forum theatre likely was an important contributor to the positive results. Conclusion: This pilot test indicated that the educational model may be effective in improving health care providers' preparedness to care for older adults subjected to abuse. However, uncertainties about how to handle elder abuse cases remained post-intervention. In a future full-scale test of the model more focus needs to be put on how to manage cases of elder abuse. This article aims to shed light on some points that become difficult to understand in relation to ecclesiology, the sacrament of Orders and the Gospel itself as good news from the challenge posed by the victims of sexual abuse by priests (or religious). An analysis will be made as adequate and realistic as possible from a proactive vision, where this new paradigm that has meant the great crisis of sexual abuse serves to make the Church see that hope never disappoints, and that before a major crisis like this, the Church -semper reformanda- at the prompting of the Holy Spirit, learn from the mistakes and bad practices adopted, often in a systemic way, and be -now more than ever-faithful to her Lord until he returns. The aim of this study is to analyse the differences between bullying and cyberbullying in rural and urban areas. The number of students who have participated in this research is 2,162: 52.7% in their 5th year of Primary Education in Spain (ages 10-11) and 47.3 % in their 6th year (ages 11-12) – 50.7% of them were living in the countryside and 49.3% in the city. Although the results showed that the impact of bullying/cyberbullying in rural and urban schools is very similar, some distinctive features have been identified: for example, in rural schools there are more victims of verbal bullying, exclusion, and cyberbullying, whereas in urban schools there is a clear trend of verbal bullying and exclusion. Depending on the context, there is also a significant pattern regarding the victims: in rural schools, victims of this type of abuse are schoolmates, but in urban schools victims and aggressors do not go to the same school. The results also show that the impact of this abuse depends on the size of the city/town where schools are located. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On the sidelines of a large research project, the article carries out some considerations on minors victims of abuse and maltreatment and on the educational relationship with them. First of all, a typology of abused minors is outlined, ranging from the very serious cases of psychotic breakdown, to the mildest cases in which the emotional dependence on the caregiver is not denied, passing through the cases in which a narcissistic pathology is developed. A typical dynamics of maltreatment is also described in today’s parent-child relationship, in which the abuse arises and originates from the parent’s inability to respond to the character problem of adaptation to the child’s social rules, which arose from an inability of the adult to meet his emotional needs. In the last part, the article explores the theme of the educational relationship of help with these minors, underlining the need of the educator to show the ability to contain the intense suffering of these children and their pathological defenses, at different levels of their problem, to put in place an experience of taking charge that performs a corrective and reparative function of the abuse suffered. Background: Elder abuse is underreported and undertreated. Methods for prevention and intervention are being developed, but the knowledge guiding such measures is often insufficiently based on the victims' own voices due to a paucity of studies. The aim of this study was therefore to explore experiences of elder abuse among the victims themselves. Methods: Consecutive inpatients ≥ 65 years of age at a hospital clinic in Sweden were invited to participate, and 24 victims of elder abuse were identified. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted, and transcripts were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis generated four themes that together give a comprehensive picture of elder abuse from the participants' subjective perspectives. The participants' experiences of abuse were similar to previous third-party descriptions of elder abuse and to descriptions of abuse among younger adults, but certain aspects were substantially different. Vulnerability due to aging and diseases led to dependance on others and reduced autonomy. Rich descriptions were conveyed of neglect, psychological abuse, and other types of abuse in the contexts of both care services and family relations. Conclusions: Elder abuse is often associated with an individual vulnerability mix of the aging body, illnesses, and help dependence in connection with dysfunctional surroundings. As individual differences of vulnerability, exposure to violence, and associated consequences were so clear, this implies that components of prevention and intervention should be individually tailored to match the needs and preferences of older victims. Domestic and family violence (DFV) is a serious and widespread problem in Australia and across the world, including in faith communities. There are calls for research to assist churches to better recognize, respond to and prevent violence. This study draws on data from the 2016 Australian National Church Life Survey (n = 883 senior local church leaders, n = 1270 churchgoers) to provide the first Australia-wide cross-denominational statistics on Christian clergy responses to DFV. Two-thirds of leaders had previously dealt with DFV situations in their ministry, primarily responding to victims of abuse by referring them to specialist support services and by counselling them. The findings suggest a particular depth of experience with DFV situations and strength of awareness of the needs of victims for safety and specialist support among Salvationist leaders. While, overall, a substantial majority of churchgoers felt that they could approach their church for help if they were experiencing DFV, just half of Catholics felt that they could do so. Future research should explore responses to DFV in specific denominations and culturally and linguistic diverse contexts in more detail and seek to understand the practices used by the large minority of clergy who are dealing with perpetrators. PASTORAL care , *POWER (Social sciences) , *VICTIMS of abuse , *CHAPLAINS - Abstract
Disproving assumptions to the contrary, this article clearly shows how and why adults can become victims of abuse in church contexts. It does this by focusing on the pastoral care context and the interdependent potential risk factors lying within. As previous studies suggest, this context is especially susceptible to perpetrating abuse. Approximately three-quarters of all cases of abuse occur or begin in the context of pastoral care or spiritual counseling. Often, theories of pastoral care do not address this danger and tend to idealize the practice of pastoral care. In contrast, it is necessary to recognize a specific power to victimize due to the theological and structural power differential in pastoral relationships. Therefore, this article proposes a complex understanding of "vulnerability" and "vulnerance" that accounts for the victimization potential inherent in all pastoral care settings and advocates a theory of pastoral care that is not only concerned with the individual but also incorporates reflections on structural and systemic power dynamics. In a significant number of cases, clerical sex offenders impregnate their victims and force them into hiding, abortion, or adoption. This phenomenon is referred to in this paper as reproductive abuse. Clearly, most victims of reproductive abuse are adults, but even among minor victims of clerical child abuse, between 1 and 10 percent may have experienced reproductive abuse. On the basis of pertinent studies, this paper explores archival material on several dozen allegations of reproductive abuse in the context of clergy sexual abuse of minors in the US Catholic Church. Besides some tentative estimates of the general frequency of the phenomenon, this paper offers a distinction of three different types of reproductive abuse and an analysis of the interplay of clericalist and secular misogyny, which appears to be largely responsible for the silencing of victims as well as for the impunity of perpetrators and leads to the invisibility of this phenomenon, despite the high importance attributed to reproductive issues in the Catholic context. The French Episcopal Conference has responded to the Sauvé Commission's report on ecclesiastical abuses, acknowledging the institutional responsibility of the Church for the abuses suffered by the victims and the systemic dimension of these abuses. The bishops have widely welcomed the report and have announced the creation of an independent national body for recognition and reparation. They also commit to improving the listening and support mechanisms for victims in all dioceses, establishing an interdiocesan canonical criminal court, and creating a working group chaired by lay personalities to reflect on pending recommendations and propose measures for their implementation. This text unveils the ways in which gender violence is expressed in the legal structures of legal treatment to the complaints of women victims of abuse in intimate partner relationships in Colombia. Judicial actions and rulings in these cases result in actions of revictimization and ineffectiveness of justice, which perpetuate the logic of male domination and moral damage to women. As long as the Colombian normative system does not recognize that it constitutes one of the elemental structures of patriarchy, it will be ineffective in guaranteeing women a life free of violence. The present study aimed to understand the social representations of judges about sexual abuse committed against children and adolescents. 12 first and second instance judges participated. Bardin content analysis was performed on the data obtained through the interviews. The results illustrate that sexual abuse is considered an act laden with violence, with devastating consequences for victims and their families, with prevalence in the intrafamily context. It was found that physical and postural aspects of the adolescent victim, such as body development (breast) and short clothes, and the perception of these as seductive, exert some influence on judicial decisions. Thus, it is evident the need for greater multidisciplinary qualification of the professionals who work in these cases, so that they do not take decisions based on these aspects, so that the consequences for victims of sexual abuse can be minimized through adequate monitoring. Background: Oral cavity may be considered a pivotal focal point in physical assault or abuse because of its implication in communication and nutrition. Dentists trained in a child abuse curriculum can provide valuable information and assistance to physicians about oral and dental aspects of child abuse and neglect. The present study was conducted to evaluate the orofacial features of children between the age group of 5–16 years suspected to be victims of child abuse/neglect. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 250 children ranging between 5 and 16 years were enrolled in the study. All the participants were suspected to be victims of child abuse/neglect. The orofacial features were carefully examined by a well-trained dentist. Results: Two hundred and fifty children were enrolled in the study. Seventy-two children (30%) presented with laceration of various sites including lip (n = 13), frenum (n = 8), buccal mucosa (n = 26), palate (n = 16), and floor of the mouth (n = 9). Twenty-nine participants exhibited the features of avulsion (11.6%). Eighteen children revealed dento-alveolar fractures, 104 presented with dental caries (41.6%), 19 presented with missing teeth (7.6%), all the candidates presented with deposits (100%). Conclusion: Careful intraoral and perioral examination of the participants victimized to abuse and/neglect is necessary as the oral cavity is a central focus for physical abuse, which may be allied to its importance in communication and nutrition. Physicians and dentists should work together to increase the prevention, detection, and treatment of these conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Police attend numerous family and domestic violence (FDV) related events each year and record details of these events as both structured data and unstructured free-text narratives. These descriptive narratives include information about the types of abuse (eg physical, emotional, financial) and the injuries sustained by victims. However, this information is not used in research. In this paper we demonstrate the application of an automated text mining method to identify abuse types and victim injuries in a large corpus of NSW Police Force FDV event narratives (492,393) recorded between January 2005 and December 2016. Specific types of abuse and victim injuries were identified in 71.3 percent and 35.9 percent of FDV event narratives respectively. The most commonly identified abuse types mentioned in the narratives were non-physical (55.4%). Our study supports the application of text mining for use in FDV research and monitoring. JUVENILE delinquency , *CRIME , *CHILD sexual abuse , *SEX crimes , *DEVIANT behavior , *PEDOPHILIA , *VICTIMS of abuse - Abstract
The paper is composed of two parts. The first part covers juvenile delinquency with all its characteristics. When analyzing the delinquency, we gave a special place to the socio-pathological phenomena which is more and more present and the rate is higher from year to year. Social pathology is a huge issue that requires special commitment, first, for its detection and then prevention. Within the delinquency, we also cover the most common crimes committed by juveniles. In the second part of this paper, the authors deal in more details with a specific form of crime which can also be committed by juveniles: child sexual abuse and pedophilia. First, the difference between child sexual abuse and pedophilia will be discussed, a difference that is of particular importance in cases where minors are abusers. Furthermore, the main characteristics of cases when both perpetrators and victims of sexual abuse are minors will be addressed. Although these criminal offenses are rarer in practice unlike the criminal offenses and deviant behaviors treated in the first part, however, knowing the main characteristics and specifics of such cases is of particular importance for the legal-criminal treatment of the perpetrators of these criminal offenses. The paper is divided into two parts to facilitate a clearer understanding of different aspects of the violent death of previously abused female victims. The first part offers a brief overview of the most recent phenomenological conclusions on violence ending in death and explains the need to focus on gender differences in homicide victimisation. A bulk of research has confirmed that most women are more vulnerable to homicide within home and that the lethal outcome is an escalation of previously experienced abuse. In order to contribute to a more in-depth study of female intimate homicides, the authors focus on a variety of definitions and draw a clear line between the term femicide and the aggravated murder of a closely related person. In the second part of the paper, the authors have analysed the case-law of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia in which the perpetrators were found guilty of the criminal offence of aggravated murder of a closely related person (Art. 111, Para. 3 of the Criminal Code) in the period from 1 January 2013 to 1 June 2020. The research primarily focused on the circumstance of previous abuse, especially on the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator, the duration and frequency of abuse, and the reaction of the environment and competent authorities in cases where they knew about the abuse or when it was reported. POST-traumatic stress disorder , *PSYCHOTHERAPY , *ECSTASY (Drug) , *MEDICAL personnel , *VICTIMS of abuse - Abstract
Objective: To conduct Brazil's first clinical trial employing 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), given its high prevalence resulting from epidemic violence. Methods: Of 60 volunteers, four matched the inclusion & exclusion criteria. Three patients with PTSD secondary to sexual abuse (diagnosed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV and the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale for DSMV-4 [CAPS 4]) completed enrollment and treatment, following a standardized Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies protocol consisting of 15 weekly therapy sessions: three with orally administered MDMA with concurrent psychotherapy and music, spaced approximately 1 month apart. CAPS-4 scores two months after the final MDMA session were the primary outcome. Results: No serious adverse events occurred. The most frequent adverse events were somatic pains and anguish. CAPS-4 reductions were always greater than 25 points. The final scores were 61, 27, and 8, down from baseline scores of 90, 78, and 72, respectively. All reductions were greater than 30%, which is indicative of clinically significant improvement. Secondary outcomes included lower Beck Depressive Inventory scores and higher Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory and Global Assessment of Functioning scores. Conclusion: Considering the current limitations in safe and efficacious treatments for PTSD and recent studies abroad with larger patient samples, MDMA-assisted psychotherapy could become a viable treatment in Brazil. SEX crimes , *SEXUAL assault , *JUSTICE administration , *DEVELOPMENTAL disabilities , *VICTIMS of abuse - Abstract
The following paper aims to analyze the provision of procedural accommodations during the legal process to victims of sexual abuse or sexual assault with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD). It also examines the characteristics of victims with IDD and their aggressors, providing additional information on the reporting process. To this end, a total of 56 sentences resolved over a period of four years (2014-2018) were analyzed, extracting objective information regarding the most relevant aspects of the crime committed, the victim, the aggressor, and the legal process. The obtained results showed the existence of different obstacles that are still present in the Spanish jurisprudence, requiring an appropriate training for those working in the field of administration of justice: the victim declares repeatedly, especially when a crime of sexual assault is being judged, and without any type of accommodation or professional support. We also point out the need to evaluate the psychological consequences that the victim may experience, and to dispel myths regarding developmental disabilities that hinder access and participation in legal proceedings under equal conditions. After the emergence of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP), developed by John Ruggie and adopted by the UN Human Rights Council with its resolution 17/4 of 16 June 2011, as the first international standard for preventing and addressing the potentially adverse impacts that business activity may have on the human rights of individuals, the UNGP quickly became the internationally accepted framework for enhancing the standards and practice regarding business and human rights, being endorsed or employed by individual Governments, business enterprises and associations, civil society and workers’ organizations, national human rights institutions, and investors. The article summarizes the current progress on the efforts to move the UNGP from paper to practice, in order to set up a legally binding framework for preventing and addressing the impact of the business activity on the human rights of individuals and also for providing access to justice and effective remedies for the victims of such abuses. In the UK, fathers often face great difficulties maintaining a meaningful involvement in their children's lives after parental separation. Men who are victims of partner abuse face almost universal disbelief and a dearth of provision to help them. The reality of male victims of partner abuse is kept submerged, whilst that of female victims is sometimes amplified in order to undermine fathers' attempts to obtain court orders for child contact. Feminists dominate the academic research in these areas and hence control the narrative which shapes Governmental and judicial policy, and this maintains the status quo. By concentrating upon the recent works of one individual as an exemplar, and by deconstructing the language used and its poststructural trappings, the mechanisms which continue to propagate this institutionalised deceit are exposed. MENTAL health , *WOMEN criminals , *FORENSIC psychiatry , *PSYCHOSES , *VICTIMS of abuse - Abstract
Background: There is a paucity of research on women offenders in the South African context, particularly those referred for forensic psychiatric observation. Little is known about their life histories, the nature of their offences or the psycho-social contexts that enable, or are antecedents to, women's criminal offending. Aims: This research study, the largest of its kind in South Africa, examined the psycho-social contexts within which women offenders referred for psychiatric evaluation come to commit offences. The profiles of both offenders and victims, as well as reasons for referral and forensic mental health outcomes, were investigated. Methods: A retrospective record review of 573 cases, spanning a 12-year review period, from six different forensic psychiatric units in South Africa, was conducted. Results: The findings describe a population of women offenders who come from backgrounds of socio-demographic and socio-economic adversity, with relatively high pre-offence incidences of being victims of abuse themselves, with significant levels of mental ill-health and alcohol abuse permeating their life histories. The majority of index offences which led to court-ordered forensic evaluations were for violent offences against the person, with murder being the single most common index offence in the sample. Most victims of violence were known to the accused. There were also relatively high rates of psychotic and mood-spectrum disorders present, with relatively low rates of personality disorders. The majority of women were deemed to be trial competent and criminally responsible in relation to their index offences. Conclusion: It is recommended that more standardised and gender-sensitive forensic mental health assessment approaches, documentation and reporting be employed throughout the country. Future research should compare male and female offending patterns and forensic mental health profiles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
