Abstract

The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations (BINGO) radio telescope will use the neutral Hydrogen emission line to map the Universe in the redshift range $0.127 \le z \le 0.449$, with the main goal of probing BAO. In addition, the instrument optical design and hardware configuration support the search for Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). In this work, we propose the use of a BINGO Interferometry System (BIS) including new auxiliary, smaller, radio telescopes (hereafter \emph{outriggers}). The interferometric approach makes it possible to pinpoint the FRB sources in the sky. We present here the results of several BIS configurations combining BINGO horns with and without mirrors ($4$ m, $5$ m, and $6$ m) and 5, 7, 9, or 10 for single horns. We developed a new {\tt Python} package, the {\tt FRBlip}, which generates synthetic FRB mock catalogs and computes, based on a telescope model, the observed signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) that we used to compute numerically the detection rates of the telescopes and how many interferometry pairs of telescopes (\emph{baselines}) can observe an FRB. FRBs observed by more than one baseline are the ones whose location can be determined. We thus evaluate the performance of BIS regarding FRB localization. We found that BIS will be able to localize 23 FRBs yearly with single horn outriggers in the best configuration (using 10 outriggers of 6 m mirrors), with redshift $z \leq 0.96$; the full localization capability depends on the number and the type of the outriggers. Wider beams are best to pinpoint FRB sources because potential candidates will be observed by more baselines, while narrow beams look deep in redshift. The BIS can be a powerful extension of the regular BINGO telescope, dedicated to observe hundreds of FRBs during Phase 1. Abstract

The large-scale distribution of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Universe is luminous through its 21 cm emission. The goal of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations -- BINGO -- radio telescope is to detect baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) at radio frequencies through 21 cm intensity mapping (IM). The telescope will span the redshift range 0.127 $< z <$ 0.449 with an instantaneous field-of-view of $14.75^{\circ} \times 6.0^{\circ}$. In this work we investigate different constructive and operational scenarios of the instrument by generating sky maps as they would be produced by the instrument. In doing this we use a set of end-to-end IM mission simulations. The maps will additionally be used to evaluate the efficiency of a component separation method (GNILC). We have simulated the kind of data that would be produced in a single-dish IM experiment such as BINGO. According to the results obtained, we have optimized the focal plane design of the telescope. In addition, the application of the GNILC method on simulated data shows that it is feasible to extract the cosmological signal across a wide range of multipoles and redshifts. Abstract

Observations of the redshifted 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen (HI) are a new and powerful window of observation that offers us the possibility to map the spatial distribution of cosmic HI and learn about cosmology. BINGO (Baryon Acoustic Oscillations [BAO] from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations) is a new unique radio telescope designed to be one of the first to probe BAO at radio frequencies. BINGO has two science goals: cosmology and astrophysics. Cosmology is the main science goal and the driver for BINGO's design and strategy. The key of BINGO is to detect the low redshift BAO to put strong constraints in the dark sector models. Given the versatility of the BINGO telescope, a secondary goal is astrophysics, where BINGO can help discover and study Fast Radio Bursts (FRB) and other transients, Galactic and extragalactic science. In this paper, we introduce the latest progress of the BINGO project, its science goals, describing the scientific potential of the project in each science and the new developments obtained by the collaboration. We introduce the BINGO project and its science goals and give a general summary of recent developments in construction, science potential and pipeline development obtained by the BINGO collaboration in the past few years. We show that BINGO will be able to obtain competitive constraints for the dark sector, and also that will allow for the discovery of several FRBs in the southern hemisphere. The capacity of BINGO in obtaining information from 21-cm is also tested in the pipeline introduced here. There is still no measurement of the BAO in radio, and studying cosmology in this new window of observations is one of the most promising advances in the field. Abstract

The measurement of diffuse 21-cm radiation from the hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen (HI signal) in different redshifts is an important tool for modern cosmology. However, detecting this faint signal with non-cryogenic receivers in single-dish telescopes is a challenging task. The BINGO (Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations) radio telescope is an instrument designed to detect baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAOs) in the cosmological HI signal, in the redshift interval $0.127 \le z \le 0.449$. This paper describes the BINGO radio telescope, including the current status of the optics, receiver, observational strategy, calibration, and the site. BINGO has been carefully designed to minimize systematics, being a transit instrument with no moving dishes and 28 horns operating in the frequency range $980 \le \nu \le 1260$ MHz. Comprehensive laboratory tests were conducted for many of the BINGO subsystems and the prototypes of the receiver chain, horn, polarizer, magic tees, and transitions have been successfully tested between 2018 - 2020. The survey was designed to cover $\sim 13\%$ of the sky, with the primary mirror pointing at declination $\delta=-15^{\circ}$. The telescope will see an instantaneous declination strip of $14.75^{\circ}$. The results of the prototype tests closely meet those obtained during the modeling process, suggesting BINGO will perform according to our expectations. After one year of observations with a $60\%$ duty cycle and 28 horns, BINGO should achieve an expected sensitivity of 102 $\mu K$ per 9.33 MHz frequency channel, one polarization, and be able to measure the HI power spectrum in a competitive time frame., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

BINGO (BAO from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations) is a unique radio telescope designed to map the intensity of neutral hydrogen distribution at cosmological distances, making the first detection of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) in the frequency band 980 MHz - 1260 MHz, corresponding to a redshift range $0.127 < z < 0.449$. BAO is one of the most powerful probes of cosmological parameters and BINGO was designed to detect the BAO signal to a level that makes it possible to put new constraints on the equation of state of dark energy. The telescope will be built in Para\'iba, Brazil and consists of two $\thicksim$ 40m mirrors, a feedhorn array of 28 horns, and no moving parts, working as a drift-scan instrument. It will cover a $15^{\circ}$ declination strip centered at $\sim \delta=-15^{\circ}$, mapping $\sim 5400$ square degrees in the sky. The BINGO consortium is led by University of S\~ao Paulo with co-leadership at National Institute for Space Research and Campina Grande Federal University (Brazil). Simple Summary: The poultry meat industry is a significant agri-food sector worldwide. Preslaughter operations are crucial as they impact animal welfare, meat quality, and food safety. Despite their importance, few studies focus on broiler preslaughter processes in hot environments. Effective planning, handling, and monitoring are essential to improve conditions and reduce stress, ensuring better meat quality and animal welfare. Poultry production faces significant challenges, including high feed prices, diseases, and thermal stress, which impact broiler welfare and productivity. Despite advances in cooling technologies and ventilation, preslaughter operations still lead to considerable losses. This review highlights the need for the improved management of thermal environments and animal logistics. Preslaughter operations typically involve fasting broilers for 8–12 h to reduce gastrointestinal contents and contamination. Following fasting, broilers are caught, crated, and transported. Stress levels vary based on distance and conditions, with manual catching often causing stress and injuries. Catching should occur during cooler periods to minimise these issues, and transport conditions must be carefully managed. Lairage, the waiting period after transport, should be kept short (1–2 h) in climate-controlled environments to avoid stress and deterioration. Proper handling and efficient unloading are essential to prevent injuries and reduce economic losses. Stunning methods, such as electronarcosis and a controlled atmosphere, aim to minimise suffering before slaughter, though practices vary culturally and religiously. Logistics and real-time monitoring technology are crucial for enhancing animal welfare during transportation. Effective planning and the optimisation of transport processes is vital for reducing stress and losses, especially with regard to rising global temperatures and production demands. Abstract

Cattle are among the animals with diurnal activity, which is due to the specific animal–environment relationship and the natural role wild cattle play in the ecosystem. As humans began domesticating, breeding these animals, they became an integral part of this relationship. This review article addresses the most important current issues: 1) a characterisation of contemporary knowledge on the biological determinants of the vision abilities of dairy cattle, 2) a discussion of the relationship between these abilities and animal health and performance, and 3) a characterisation of the light–animal relationship under husbandry conditions. The intricate link between the anatomical and physiological aspects of visual function in cattle and their circadian rhythms was emphasised. This connection directly influences cattle growth and development, as well as the health and performance of dairy cows during the long/short day photoperiods. Abstract

There has been limited research on the effect of eucalyptus harvest residue management on soil organic carbon (SOC) in subtropical environments. This research evaluated the effect on soil C indices of the following eucalyptus harvest residue managements: AR, with all forest remnants left on the soil; NB, where bark was removed; NBr, in which branches were removed; NR, which removed all residues; and NRs, which is same as NR but also used a shade net to prevent the litter from the new plantation from reaching the soil surface. C stocks within the soil depths of 0–20 cm and 0–100 cm increased linearly with the C input from eucalyptus harvest residues. In the layer of 0–20 cm, the lowest soil C retention rate was 0.23 Mg ha−1 year−1, in the NR treatment, while in the AR treatment, the retention rate was 0.68 Mg ha−1 year−1. In the 0–100 cm layer, the highest C retention rate was obtained in the AR (1.47 Mg ha−1 year−1). The residues showed a high humification coefficient (k1 = 0.23) and a high soil organic matter decomposition rate (k2 = 0.10). Abstract

The educational process over the years has undergone several changes in its structure, being adapted to human development and modern society. Learning in a playful way provides the student with greater involvement with activities and pleasure in carrying them out in the classroom. The importance of play in the development of children, adolescents, adults and elderly people is identified, without age or ethnic restrictions. The present paper had as objective to report the activities and results obtained with the adoption of scavenger hunts of soil at UNIPAMPA. Educational competitions were held with the students of the Soils curricular component of the courses in Forestry Engineering and Environmental Management at UNIPAMPA, having as their theme the contents developed in the discipline in order to create opportunities for greater understanding, interest in the content, social integrity and pleasure with the studies. The tasks performed in the competitions were called Memory Game, Mimicry with drawing, crossword, what is the soil and pie on the face. The playful treatment in soils showed a high degree of satisfaction, cooperation and reception among the students. El proceso educativo a lo largo de los años ha sufrido diversos cambios en su estructura, adaptándose al desarrollo humano y a la sociedad moderna. Aprender de forma lúdica proporciona al alumno una mayor implicación con las actividades y el placer de realizarlas en el aula. Se identifica la importancia del juego en el desarrollo de niños, adolescentes, adultos y adultos mayores, sin restricciones de edad o etnia. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo reportar las actividades y resultados obtenidos con la realización de yincanas de suelo en la UNIPAMPA. Se realizaron concursos didácticos con los estudiantes del componente curricular Suelos de las carreras de Ingeniería Forestal y Gestión Ambiental de la UNIPAMPA, teniendo como tema los contenidos desarrollados en la disciplina con el fin de generar espacios de mayor comprensión, interés por el contenido, integridad social y placer con los estudios. Las tareas realizadas en las competencias fueron juego de memoria, mímica con dibujo, crucigrama, cuál es el solo y pastel en la cara. El trato lúdico en solos mostró un alto grado de satisfacción, cooperación y acogida entre los alumnos. O processo educacional, ao longo dos anos, submeteu-se a várias alterações em sua estrutura, adaptando-se ao desenvolvimento humano e à sociedade moderna. O aprendizado por meio do lúdico proporciona ao discente maior envolvimento e prazer ao realizar as atividades em sala de aula. Identifica-se a importância do lúdico no desenvolvimento da criança, do adolescente, do adulto e do idoso, sem haver restrições de idade ou etnia. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo relatar as atividades e os resultados obtidos com a realização de gincanas de solos na Universidade Federal do Pampa (UNIPAMPA). As gincanas educativas foram realizadas com discentes do componente curricular de Solos, dos cursos de Engenharia Florestal e Gestão Ambiental, da UNIPAMPA. As gincanas tiveram como temas os conteúdos desenvolvidos na disciplina, com o intuito de oportunizar maior entendimento e interesse acerca desses conteúdos, integridade social e prazer nos estudos. As tarefas realizadas nas gincanas foram jogo da memória, mímica com desenho, cruzadinha, qual é o solo e torta na cara. O uso do lúdico no componente curricular Solos apresentou um elevado grau de satisfação, cooperação e recepção entre os discentes.

Abstract

Um rosto pode ser totalmente aniquilado? Com essa provocação, miramos o mugshot de Hout Bophana, fio condutor deste texto. O ensaio tenta refletir sobre o testemunho vestigial de seu rosto a partir de conceitos filosóficos presentes em Lévinas e Butler, visando uma política das imagens, especialmente daquelas que expõem rostos e corpos vitimados por violências. Também buscamos compreender o método do cineasta Rithy Panh, que, motivado por essa fotografia, realizou um importante documentário sobre a memória do genocídio cambojano. Ao fazer das imagens de arquivo do extermínio uma espécie de lápide para os mortos, o método de Panh também se avizinha do gesto epistolar presente na eliminação de Bophana e de seu esposo, Ly Sitha. Can a face in fact be totally annihilated? From this provocation, we aimed at the mugshot of Bophana, the guiding thread of this text. The essay tries to reflect on the vestigial testimony of her face based on philosophical concepts present in Lévinas and Butler, seeking a policy of images, especially those that expose faces and bodies victimized by violence. We also sought to understand the method of filmmaker Rithy Panh, who made an important documentary on the memory of the Cambodian genocide motivated by Bophana’s photograph. By making the archival images of the extermination a kind of gravestone for the dead, Panh’s method also approaches the epistolary gesture present in the elimination of Bophana and her husband, Ly Sitha.

Abstract

Could Levinas' thought lead us to an ethical reading of literary texts? How can concepts such as Face, Testimony, Substitution, guide us in approaching authorial writing of another that reports, narrates? In this article, we approach the female faces of Scholastique Mukasonga to try, with the Levinasian perspective, an exercise of ethical reading about some his texts: Cockroaches (2006); The Barefoot Woman (2008) and Our Lady of the Nile (2012). The three works can be understood with a testimonial cycle by the author, addressing issues related to Rwanda and the 1994 Tutsi genocide. We also approach some specificities: about the female, their faces manifested in writing (the sayings) and in the voices revealed by her (the say), engaging in a dialogue between the words of Scholastique, Levinas and commentators of him; about the crossing of death and mourning in works such as those of Mukasonga, which narrate violent situations, sometimes unnameable, bordering on suffering and horror; and finally, on dealing with all of this, which is largely provided by the (im)possible writing, as urgent as necessary in the present times. O pensamento de Levinas poderia nos conduzir a uma leitura ética de textos literários? De que forma conceitos como os de Rosto, Testemunho, Substituição, podem nos guiar na aproximação da escrita autoral, de um outro que relata, narra? No presente artigo nos aproximamos dos rostos femininos de Scholastique Mukasonga para arriscarmos, a partir da perspectiva levinasiana, um exercício de leitura ética de alguns de seus textos: Baratas (2006); A mulher dos pés descalços (2008) e Nossa Senhora do Nilo (2012). As três obras podem ser compreendidas com um ciclo testemunhal da autora, abordando questões correlatas a Ruanda e ao genocídio tutsi de 1994. Abordamos também algumas especificidades: relativas ao feminino, seus rostos manifestos na escrita (ditos) e nas vozes por ela reveladas (dizer), travando um diálogo entre as palavras de Scholastique, de Levinas e dos comentadores desse; a respeito do atravessamento da morte e do luto nas obras como as de Mukasonga, que narram situações violentas, por vezes inomináveis, limítrofes entre o sofrimento e o horror; e finalmente, sobre o fazer face a tudo isso, o que é em grande medida propiciado pela escrita (im)possível, tão urgente quanto necessária aos tempos presentes.

Abstract

Apesar de o esterco líquido de suínos ser um fertilizante, seu uso inadequado pode comprometer a qualidade do solo e água. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar alterações em algumas características químicas de um solo sob pastagem natural com o uso de esterco líquido de suínos e suas implicações agronômicas e ambientais. O experimento foi conduzido de novembro de 1995 a novembro de 1999 em Paraíso do Sul, RS, em condomínio de suinocultores. Os tratamentos constituíram-se de 0, 20 e 40 m³ ha-1 de esterco líquido de suínos, aplicado em intervalos de 45 a 60 dias. Em cada época de aplicação de esterco, a pastagem natural era roçada, a forragem retirada e o esterco reaplicado. Os resultados mostraram que o uso sistemático de esterco líquido de suínos representa a adição de grandes quantidades de nutrientes ao solo, elevando principalmente os teores de P, Ca e Mg em áreas sob pastagem natural. O ambiente para o crescimento das plantas também pode ser melhorado com o uso de esterco líquido de suínos pela diminuição na saturação de Al, mas deve-se monitorar o teor de K no solo, porque, sob pastoreio, os teores podem decrescer. O fato de adicionar altas quantidades de N por meio do esterco líquido de suínos sem alterar seus teores no solo evidencia que ocorrem grandes perdas de N, principalmente na forma de nitrato. Além disso, a elevada concentração de P na camada mais superficial do solo mostra que estes elementos podem comprometer a qualidade do ambiente, especialmente como contaminantes da água.

Abstract

The studies of fertilization splitting are necessary specially for the grass succession black oat-corn where N immobilization is very common. Four experiments were carried out in commercial farms under no-tillage, in four counties - Itaara, Santo Ângelo, Júlio de Castilhos and Tupanciretã, all of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with the objective of evaluating the splitting of N application in a corn/black oat crop rotation, during the 97/98 and 98/99 cropping seasons. The N was applied at three times -- pre-planted, starter and sidedressed. The pre-planted applied N for corn, corresponding to total or partial rates that would be sidedressed presented similar results in relation to the sidedress application, however, years of above average rainfall presented N deficiency for corn, reducing yield, which indicates that N application as starter or sidedress is recommended.
