5. Dynamic transition between Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction patterns - a lecture experiment

Abstract

A simple method for presenting a dynamic transition between Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction zones is considered. Experiments are conducted on different apertures and diffraction patterns are photographed at various distances between the screen and the aperture. A diverging lens is introduced into the experimental setup to provide enlarged Fresnel diffraction patterns. Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction patterns and dynamic transition between them can be easily obtained on a distance of few meters, what gives an opportunity to use our setup as a lecture experiment. Abstract

In the article, the philosophical significance of quantum computation theory for philosophy of mathematics is discussed. In particular, I examine the notion of "quantum-assisted proof" (QAP); the discussion sheds light on the problem of the nature of mathematical proof; the potential empirical aspects of mathematics and the realism-antirealism debate (in the context of the indispensability argument). 14. Regional economic effects of differentiated climate action, carbon leakage, and anti-leakage measure

Abstract

Unilateral climate policy by the EU can be detrimental for global climate protection. Our purpose is to provide an economic analysis of this policy, to quantify the risk of carbon leakage, and to investigate economic effects related to the potential anti-leakage policy measures. We analyze existing definitions of carbon leakage and propose a new rigorous one. This is then tested using computable general equilibrium analysis for unilateral carbon dioxide abatement programs in the European Union in 2020, adopted under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (8%, 20% and 30% emission reduction relative to 1990). Our model of the global economy is disaggregated into three regions (the EU, the rest of the Annex I and non-Annex I countries). The analysis includes a decomposition of change in carbon emission using Logarithmic Mean Divista Index. While some anti-leakage measures (such as border tax adjustment on imports) reduce carbon leakage significantly, some of them are less effective. We found that output-based allocation of free emission permits to energy-intensive and trade exposed sectors reduce the leakage rate slightly, and a clean development mechanism -- depending how it is defined -- can either remove or increase carbon leakage. The results crucially depend on technical assumptions adopted in such models. We identified a list of parameters (like intra-import and Armington elasticities) which affect not only the magnitude but also the sign of carbon leakage rate. Manipulating with elasticities of substitution in production function suggests that in reaction to the unilateral action of the EU, the other regions may both increase or decrease their carbon emissions. Even though we are positive about computable general equilibrium models? application in this policy area, their policy simulations cannot be directly treated as policy recommendations without a careful validation of their assumptions.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present some basic notions of the theory of quantum computing and to compare them with the basic notions of the classical theory of computation. I am convinced, that the results of quantum computation theory (QCT) are not only interesting in themselves, but also should be taken into account in discussions concerning the nature of mathematical knowledge. The philosophical discussion will however be postponed to another paper. QCT seems not to be well-known among philosophers (at least not to the degree it deserves), so the aim of this paper is to provide the necessary technical preliminaries presented in a way accessible to the general philosophical audience. Abstract

The study compares the effect of the addition of two coumarins: 4-hydroxycoumarin (4-HC) and 7-hydroxycoumarin (umbelliferone; UMB) on dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) membranes. The study was based on microcalorimetric and fluorescence measurements. The examinations have shown that 4-HC changes parameters of phase transition of DPPC membranes to a greater degree than UMB. It is associated with different location of each coumarin in the lipid membrane, which is caused by different orientation of polarity of coumarin molecules. 4-HC molecules that are amphiphilic "along" incorporate inside the membrane interacting with lipid carbohydrate chains. UMB molecules amphiphilic "across" the molecule are not incorporated inside the membrane and do not interact with acyl chains.
