Abstract

More than 36 years have passed since the discovery of the infrared excess from circumstellar dust orbiting the white dwarf G29-38, which at 17.5 pc it is the nearest and brightest of its class. The precise morphology of the orbiting dust remains only marginally constrained by existing data, subject to model-dependent inferences, and thus fundamental questions of its dynamical origin and evolution persist. This study presents a means to constrain the geometric distribution of the emitting dust using stellar pulsations measured at optical wavelengths as a variable illumination source of the dust, which re-radiates primarily in the infrared. By combining optical photometry from the Whole Earth Telescope with 0.7-2.5 micron spectroscopy obtained with SpeX at NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility, we detect luminosity variations at all observed wavelengths, with variations at most wavelengths corresponding to the behavior of the pulsating stellar photosphere, but towards the longest wavelengths the light curves probe the corresponding time-variability of the circumstellar dust. In addition to developing methodology, we find pulsation amplitudes decrease with increasing wavelength for principal pulsation modes, yet increase beyond approximately 2 microns for nonlinear combination frequencies. We interpret these results as combination modes deriving from principal modes of identical l values and discuss the implications for the morphology of the warm dust. We also draw attention to some discrepancies between our findings and theoretical expectations for the results of the non-linearity imposed by the surface convection zone on mode--mode interactions and on the behavior of the first harmonic of the highest-amplitude pulsation mode., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, to be published in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

We present a micro-mechanical terahertz (THz) detector fabricated on a silicon on insulator (SOI) substrate and operating at room-temperature. The device is based on a U-shaped cantilever of micrometric size, on top of which two aluminum half-wave dipole antennas are deposited. This produces an absorption extending over the $\sim 2-3.5$THz frequency range. Due to the different thermal expansion coefficients of silicon and aluminum, the absorbed radiation induces a deformation of the cantilever, which is read out optically using a $1.5\mu$m laser diode. By illuminating the detector with an amplitude modulated, 2.5 THz quantum cascade laser, we obtain, at room-temperature and atmospheric pressure, a responsivity of $\sim 1.5 \times 10^{8}$pm/W for the fundamental mechanical bending mode of the cantilever. This yields an noise-equivalent-power of 20 nW/Hz$^{1/2}$ at 2.5THz. Finally, the low mechanical quality factor of the mode grants a broad frequency response of approximately 150kHz bandwidth, with a response time of $\sim 2.5\mu$s.

5. Radiographic Cone Zone Classification of Metaphyseal Cone Fixation in Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty

Abstract

Background: No objective radiographic scoring system exists to classify metaphyseal cone stability. Our purpose was to create a novel, systematic method to radiographically evaluate metaphyseal cone fixation based on radiographic findings suggestive of cone stability. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of revision total knee arthroplasty patients (6/2015-12/2017) using porous titanium femoral or tibial metaphyseal cones in conjunction with short cemented stems (50 mm-75 mm). Minimum follow-up was 2 years. Survivorship free of aseptic loosening and reoperation, as well as radiographic evaluation using a novel cone zone scoring system were analyzed. Results: Forty-nine revision total knee arthroplasties were included in the study (12 femoral, 48 tibial cones), the majority, performed for aseptic loosening (25/49, 51%). Median follow-up was 39 months (range 25-58). Using the radiographic cone zone scoring method, >90% of all femoral cones were classified as likely stable or stable with strong, statistically significant intraclass correlations between all 3 reviewers. Similarly, >97% of all tibial cones were classified as likely stable or stable, with moderate, statistically significant intraclass correlations between all 3 reviewers. Only 1 femoral and 1 tibial cone were considered at risk of loosening. The study sample demonstrated 100% survivorship free of revision for aseptic loosening without evidence of radiographic loosening in any case. Conclusions: Using a novel systematic cone zone scoring and classification method, the overwhelming majority of femoral and tibial cones were classified as likely stable or stable, with no identified cases of aseptic loosening or related revision. Further studies are needed to validate this objective classification method.

Abstract

Image classifiers based on convolutional neural networks are defined, and the rate of convergence of the misclassification risk of the estimates towards the optimal misclassification risk is analyzed. Under suitable assumptions on the smoothness and structure of the aposteriori probability a rate of convergence is shown which is independent of the dimension of the image. This proves that in image classification it is possible to circumvent the curse of dimensionality by convolutional neural networks.

11. Understanding the Cognitive Processes Involved in Writing to Learn

Abstract

Writing is often used as a tool for learning. However, empirical support for the benefits of writing-to-learn is mixed, likely because the literature conflates diverse activities (e.g., summaries, term papers) under the single umbrella of writing-to-learn. Following recent trends in the writing-to-learn literature, we focus on the underlying cognitive processes. We draw on the largely independent writing-to-learn and cognitive psychology learning literatures to identify important cognitive processes. The current experiment examines learning from three writing tasks (and one non-writing control), with an emphasis on whether or not the tasks engaged retrieval. Tasks that engaged retrieval (essay writing and free recall) led to better final test performance than those that did not (note-taking and highlighting). Individual differences in structure building (the ability to construct mental representations of narratives; Gernsbacher, 1990) modified this effect; skilled structure builders benefited more from essay writing and free recall than did less skilled structure builders. Further, more essay-like responses led to better performance, implicating the importance of additional cognitive processes such as reorganization and elaboration. Our results highlight how both task instructions and individual differences affect the cognitive processes involved when writing-to-learn, with consequences for the effectiveness of the learning strategy. Abstract

Betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT) catalyzes the transfer of methyl groups from betaine to homocysteine (Hcy), producing methionine and dimethylglycine. In this work, we characterize Bhmt wild type (Bhmt-WT) and knockout (Bhmt-KO) mice that were fully backcrossed to a C57Bl6/J background. Consistent with our previous findings, Bhmt-KO mice had decreased body weight, fat mass, and adipose tissue weight compared to WT. Histological analyses and gene expression profiling indicate that adipose browning was activated in KO mice and contributed to the adipose atrophy observed. BHMT is not expressed in adipose tissue but is abundant in liver; thus, a signal must originate from the liver that modulates adipose tissue. We found that, in Bhmt-KO mice, homocysteine-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is associated with activation of the hepatic transcription factor cyclic AMP response element binding protein (CREBH), and an increase in hepatic and plasma concentrations of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), which is known to induce adipose browning. Our data indicate that the deletion of a single gene in one-carbon metabolism modifies adipose biology and energy metabolism. Future studies could focus on identifying if functional polymorphisms in BHMT result in a similar adipose atrophy phenotype.

Abstract

Summary:. Pyoderma gangrenosum is an uncommon neutrophilic dermatosis characterized by an ulcerative lesion with a violaceous border. Most frequently, these lesions present in the lower extremity and are associated with underlying immune-mediated comorbidities. Infrequently, these lesions may present in the upper extremity, which presents difficult challenges for upper extremity surgeons as the lesions are frequently misdiagnosed as an infectious process. This often leads to inappropriate surgical debridement and antibiotic administration. Local trauma to the lesion can lead to a process of pathergy and worsening of the lesion. Here, we report on a case of cutaneous pyoderma gangrenosum affecting the dorsal hand, originally misidentified as an atypical infection with subsequent unsuccessful surgical debridement. After involvement of a multidisciplinary team, appropriate diagnosis was made, and treatment with local immunosuppressive agents achieved resolution of the lesion.

17. Special Religious Education in a post-secular Australia

Abstract

Special Religious Education (SRE) classes are held in New South Wales public primary schools weekly. This article is built on a review of SRE classes based on Anglican past experiences to develop recommendations to ameliorate shortcomings and enhance their quality and value in New South Wales public primary schools in a post-secular society. The research was a literature study and evaluative interpretation of Anglican SRE in New South Wales from the newly emerged post-secular context. It described and discussed the history of SRE and education in New South Wales: making a contextual inquiry into the history of such education in a secular society. It used a qualitative approach to describe and interpret historical interview responses of Anglican adults about their experiences as students in SRE classes while attending New South Wales public primary schools. Three meta-themes arose from their experiences: a space for questioning; the importance of relationship and the temporal experience of SRE lessons. Recommendations to improve and deepen the SRE curriculum were made as a result of these responses, and a possible pedagogical framework to work on improving both the curriculum and learning experiences of students in SRE was suggested. This research confirmed an expectation that there will be religion and Christian teaching within the secular education system to embed virtues, values and ethics into Australian society; it is in programmes, such as SRE, children can question the way we live and act, develop a sense of belonging and a sense that they matter. It also showed that the current way is not the most conducive model for this to occur. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: In the context of the secular/non-religious public reflex in Australian society there are conflicting views in the community about the place of SRE in government schools. In this context, it is critical that Christian educators can support their claims of the continued value and role of SRE.

Abstract

The Second Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources is a catalogue of sources detected in single-frequency maps from the full duration of the Planck mission and supersedes previous versions of the Planck compact source catalogues. It consists of compact sources, both Galactic and extragalactic, detected over the entire sky. Compact sources detected in the lower frequency channels are assigned to the PCCS2, while at higher frequencies they are assigned to one of two sub-catalogues, the PCCS2 or PCCS2E, depending on their location on the sky. The first of these catalogues covers most of the sky and allows the user to produce subsamples at higher reliabilities than the target 80% integral reliability of the catalogue. The PCCS2E contains sources detected in sky regions where the diffuse emission makes it difficult to quantify the reliability of the detections. Both the PCCS2 and PCCS2E include polarization measurements, in the form of polarized flux densities, or upper limits, and orientation angles for all seven polarization-sensitive Planck channels. The improved data-processing of the full-mission maps and their reduced noise levels allow us to increase the number of objects in the catalogue, improving its completeness for the target 80 % reliability as compared with the previous versions, the PCCS and ERCSC catalogues., Comment: 39 pages and 33 figures. Abstract

The Planck mission detected thousands of extragalactic radio sources at frequencies from 28 to 857 GHz. Planck's calibration is absolute (in the sense that it is based on the satellite's annual motion around the Sun and the temperature of the cosmic microwave background), and its beams are well characterized at sub-percent levels. Thus Planck's flux density measurements of compact sources are absolute in the same sense. We have made coordinated VLA and ATCA observations of 65 strong, unresolved Planck sources in order to transfer Planck's calibration to ground-based instruments at 22, 28, and 43 GHz. The results are compared to microwave flux density scales currently based on planetary observations. Despite the scatter introduced by the variability of many of the sources, the flux density scales are determined to 1-2% accuracy. At 28 GHz, the flux density scale used by the VLA runs 3.6% +- 1.0% below Planck values; at 43 GHz, the discrepancy increases to 6.2% +- 1.4% for both ATCA and the VLA., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures and 4 tables

Abstract

We briefly review selected mathematical models that describe the dynamics of pattern formation phenomena in dip-coating and Langmuir-Blodgett transfer experiments, where solutions or suspensions are transferred onto a substrate producing patterned deposit layers with structure length from hundreds of nanometres to tens of micrometres. The models are presented with a focus on their gradient dynamics formulations that clearly shows how the dynamics is governed by particular free energy functionals and facilitates the comparison of the models. In particular, we include a discussion of models based on long-wave hydrodynamics as well as of more phenomenological models that focus on the pattern formation processes in such systems. The models and their relations are elucidated and examples of resulting patterns are discussed before we conclude with a discussion of implications of the gradient dynamics formulation and of some related open issues.

Abstract

The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched 14~May 2009 and scanned the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously between 12~August 2009 and 23~October 2013. In February~2015, ESA and the Planck Collaboration released the second set of cosmology products based on data from the entire Planck mission, including both temperature and polarization, along with a set of scientific and technical papers and a web-based explanatory supplement. This paper gives an overview of the main characteristics of the data and the data products in the release, as well as the associated cosmological and astrophysical science results and papers. The science products include maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, and diffuse foregrounds in temperature and polarization, catalogues of compact Galactic and extragalactic sources (including separate catalogues of Sunyaev-Zeldovich clusters and Galactic cold clumps), and extensive simulations of signals and noise used in assessing the performance of the analysis methods and assessment of uncertainties. The likelihood code used to assess cosmological models against the Planck data are described, as well as a CMB lensing likelihood. Scientific results include cosmological parameters deriving from CMB power spectra, gravitational lensing, and cluster counts, as well as constraints on inflation, non-Gaussianity, primordial magnetic fields, dark energy, and modified gravity., Comment: 40 pages, 24 figures

Abstract

This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effect of dietary fatty acid (FA) profile on milk fat production and FA profile in dairy cows. The study also aimed to develop prediction models using a meta-regression approach. The database included 217 peer-reviewed articles on lactating dairy cows (n = 12,892), consisting of 515 treatment means. Effect size was assessed using the raw mean differences between diets with supplementary lipid sources and those without. Subgroup analyses were employed to assess heterogeneity. Diets rich in saturated FA (SFA) increased milk fat production and proportion, while reducing de novo FA in milk. Diets high in monounsaturated FA and polyunsaturated FA decreased mixed FA in milk. Most lipid-supplemented diets increase preformed FA in milk, except those rich in SFA. Prediction models were developed using meta-regression. Key predictors of milk fat production included neutral detergent fiber (NDF), dietary myristic acid, and milk production. Milk fat proportion was best predicted by dietary unsaturated FA, NDF, and forage. De novo FA in milk was predicted by dry matter intake (DMI) and dietary FA, while preformed FA was predicted by DMI, dietary oleic and linoleic acids. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of the dietary FA profile in evaluating the effects of lipids on milk fat production and FA profile. Accurate and precise predictions of milk fat production, proportion, and FA profile can be achieved by considering cow production and dietary characteristics.

Abstract

How did our present distributed social cosmos, as a complex process of organization of cognition and civilization, emerge from more primitive directed taxis forms of primates and earlier hominins? Nothing resembling modern civilization or present-day humans existed until 15 to 10 thousand years ago. In that "blink of an eye" (compared to 200 million years of mammalian evolution) a spontaneously originated complex process of social organization emerged which enabled all modern knowledge and technological power over nature. This change in social organization and personal interaction resulted from one fundamental shift in functional cognitive organization or intellectual capacity, found extensively (as yet) only in H. sapiens: the externalization of memory capacity from activity internal to individual brains (including their inherited or "instinctive" organization) into a shared, dynamically evolving, social milieu. Transferring memory (and retrieval) processes and contents from brains into externalized storage out in the econiche has the twofold effect of: allowing brain capacity previously burdened with storage of particulars to be freed for other, more abstract cognitive tasks; simultaneously, it vastly increases processing capacity in and/or for other cognitive systems and functions. It is as if, to use a computer metaphor, we suddenly became equipped with external hard drive storage units of vast capacity when we had previously been limited to internal RAM in our brains. Abstract

BackgroundThe authors have previously demonstrated highly reliable automated classification of free-text computed tomography (CT) imaging reports using a hybrid system that pairs linguistic (natural language processing) and statistical (machine learning) techniques. Previously performed for identifying the outcome of orbital fracture in unprocessed radiology reports from a clinical data repository, the performance has not been replicated for more complex outcomes.ObjectivesTo validate automated outcome classification performance of a hybrid natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning system for brain CT imaging reports. The hypothesis was that our system has performance characteristics for identifying pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI).MethodsThis was a secondary analysis of a subset of 2,121 CT reports from the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) TBI study. For that project, radiologists dictated CT reports as free text, which were then deidentified and scanned as PDF documents. Trained data abstractors manually coded each report for TBI outcome. Text was extracted from the PDF files using optical character recognition. The data set was randomly split evenly for training and testing. Training patient reports were used as input to the Medical Language Extraction and Encoding (MedLEE) NLP tool to create structured output containing standardized medical terms and modifiers for negation, certainty, and temporal status. A random subset stratified by site was analyzed using descriptive quantitative content analysis to confirm identification of TBI findings based on the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Common Data Elements project. Findings were coded for presence or absence, weighted by frequency of mentions, and past/future/indication modifiers were filtered. After combining with the manual reference standard, a decision tree classifier was created using data mining tools WEKA 3.7.5 and Salford Predictive Miner 7.0. Performance of the decision tree classifier was evaluated on the test patient reports.ResultsThe prevalence of TBI in the sampled population was 159 of 2,217 (7.2%). The automated classification for pediatric TBI is comparable to our prior results, with the notable exception of lower positive predictive value. Manual review of misclassified reports, 95.5% of which were false-positives, revealed that a sizable number of false-positive errors were due to differing outcome definitions between NINDS TBI findings and PECARN clinical important TBI findings and report ambiguity not meeting definition criteria.ConclusionsA hybrid NLP and machine learning automated classification system continues to show promise in coding free-text electronic clinical data. For complex outcomes, it can reliably identify negative reports, but manual review of positive reports may be required. As such, it can still streamline data collection for clinical research and performance improvement.

Abstract

The Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS) is the catalogue of sources detected in the first 15 months of Planck operations, the "nominal" mission. It consists of nine single-frequency catalogues of compact sources, both Galactic and extragalactic, detected over the entire sky. The PCCS covers the frequency range 30--857\,GHz with higher sensitivity (it is 90% complete at 180 mJy in the best channel) and better angular resolution (from ~33' to ~5') than previous all-sky surveys in this frequency band. By construction its reliability is >80% and more than 65% of the sources have been detected at least in two contiguous Planck channels. In this paper we present the construction and validation of the PCCS, its contents and its statistical characterization., Comment: 21 pages, 20 figures, submitted to A&A. Abstract

We report on analysis of 308.3 hrs of high speed photometry targeting the pulsating DA white dwarf EC14012-1446. The data were acquired with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) during the 2008 international observing run XCOV26. The Fourier transform of the light curve contains 19 independent frequencies and numerous combination frequencies. The dominant peaks are 1633.907, 1887.404, and 2504.897 microHz. Our analysis of the combination amplitudes reveals that the parent frequencies are consistent with modes of spherical degree l=1. The combination amplitudes also provide m identifications for the largest amplitude parent frequencies. Our seismology analysis, which includes 2004--2007 archival data, confirms these identifications, provides constraints on additional frequencies, and finds an average period spacing of 41 s. Building on this foundation, we present nonlinear fits to high signal-to-noise light curves from the SOAR 4.1m, McDonald 2.1m, and KPNO 2m telescopes. The fits indicate a time-averaged convective response timescale of 99.4 +/- 17 s, a temperature exponent 85 +/- 6.2 and an inclination angle of 32.9 +/- 3.2 degrees. Abstract

Introduction: Approximately 40 cases of spontaneous rupture of the aorta have been described in the literature. Diagnosis can be challenging, and a high index of clinical suspicion enabling prompt treatment can be lifesaving. Report: This report presents the case of a 73 year old man who had three multilevel ruptures of the aorta at different times, all treated endovascularly. The patient had a good post-operative course, with no complaints during regular follow up. Discussion: Clinical presentation was non-specific because the ruptures were contained, but spontaneous rupture of the aorta can manifest with a catastrophic presentation and hypovolaemic shock, requiring immediate treatment. 31. The Growth of Youth Gang Problems in the United States: 1970-98. OJJDP Report.

Abstract

For many decades communities have been troubled by the criminal activities of youth gangs. This report looks at almost 30 years of information collected on gang problems in nearly 4,000 communities. The number of localities reporting gang problems increased between the 1970s and the 1990s, representing a tenfold increase in the number of cities and elevenfold increase in the number of counties reporting problems. By the late 1990s, all 50 states and the District of Columbia had reported gang problems and the problems were widely spread throughout small and large cities. The states with the largest number of problem cities were California, Illinois, Texas, Florida, and Ohio. The data provide support for the prediction that the rate of gang activity growth will decrease in the early 2000s, and some support for the prediction that the actual number of gang localities will decrease. Sections are included on the scope of gang growth over the decades; location of gang growth; trends in gang cities; and an update of selected data. Reasons for the increase in the number of gang-problems are attributed to many factors including drugs; immigration; gang names and alliances; migration; government policies; female-headed households; and gang subculture and the media. Abstract

This study was conducted during 111 days of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown and reviewed current media articles that revealed government bodies and institutions have come to view people not as priceless treasures, but in terms of the money they can generate and the economic value they may give to a nation. This view was contrasted with the historic Christian concept of inherent royalty and value that is intrinsic to all people, and embodied in monarchs and bishops. This study focuses on a review of historical literature and biblical texts around monarchy and the episcopacy in light of current media articles related to COVID-19. It found that politics and policy need to be grounded into the more fundamental aspects of our human condition and that it is the compassion and care people have for those who are more fragile: be it financially, physically, mentally or spiritually, that bishops and monarchs should be embodying in a time of COVID-19. Contribution: This study drew its key insights from contested historical thoughts on the role of monarchs and bishops. The results of this line of thinking challenge us as we consider the future function and role of these positions, and what they mean in times of crises. The key insight gained is the reminder that the lives of all people in our communities are important as each person holds an intrinsic value that cannot be traded for the sake of a country’s economy and business desires to turn a profit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What does it mean to be a rational language user? What is it to obey linguistic rules? What is the proper account of linguistic competence? A Fregean answer to these questions would make essential appeal to the notion of sense: we are masters of a language to the extent that we are able to recognise the cognitive value of its expressions; we are rational judges regarding truth-value assignments to the extent that we are sensitive to the ways in which the sense of an expression guides us in the semantic evaluation process; and as for obeying rules, it is our ability to respond to how sense directs us, for a particular assertion of a sentence, towards the determination of its truth-value that best exemplifies what it is like to follow a linguistic rule. My thesis explores a cluster of closely interrelated issues arising from these questions (whether or not considered from a Fregean perspective). Accordingly, in tracing the routes of sense my dissertation places itself at the intersection of the philosophy of language, linguistics, philosophy of logic, and meta-ethics—and indeed, I end up agreeing with Allan Gibbard that the theory of meaning really belongs to meta-ethical reflection. Chapter 1 introduces some of the main research questions that I try to address in the rest of the thesis. In chapter 2 I state a number of theses which I take to be the defining ones for semanticism. I show that they form a class of jointly incompatible commitments. I choose nonsense as a problem case for compositionality and I argue that it forces the semanticist to abandon either the learnability or the compositionality constraint. The escape route I adopt, going radically minimalist about content, is incompatible with another key semanticist thesis, namely, that grasp of meaning is grasp of truth-conditions (robustly conceived). In chapter 3, I consider the account of atomic meanings given by both the semanticist and the pragmaticist and I conclude that on neither account does interpretation come out as a process of rational choice between candidate bearers of content. Again, I suggest the lesson from indeterminacy is that we ought to embrace an ineradicably minimal conception of content. In chapter 4 I turn my attention to the meaning of the logical constants and I argue that indeterminacy worries extend to the very heart of the compositional machinery. Chapter 5 examines the view that logic is the science of reasoning. Unsurprisingly, I conclude that a defence of this claim requires endorsing content-minimalism. In chapter 6 I conclude my dissertation by sketching a radical view of content minimalism and I try to show how it can solve the puzzles I had been considering over the course of the previous chapters.

38. Making Psychologists Indispensable in the Schools: Collaborative Training Approaches Involving Educators and School Psychologists.

Abstract

There has been an increasing commitment to the notion of collaboration among professionals who have a responsibility for a client. However, the need for psychological services still seems to receive little impetus from teacher and principal requests. Furthermore, the teacher continues to operate as an isolated professional. Preservice education and the induction period for the teaching profession should be the primary emphasis for effecting the goal of making psychologists indispensable in the schools. Through planned collaborations in the field during preservice training, each professional could learn about the perspectives of the other along with an appreciation of potential professional collaborations. A second opportunity for reinforcing the earlier "bonding" experience of teachers and school psychologists is the critical need to provide new teachers with a supportive induction period as one means to address the attrition rate among teachers. The absence of a supportive network and work environment for teachers has been a long recognized handicap for this profession. The school psychology training program, through its faculty and/or students, along with local school psychological services staff can provide a valuable resource to such a program. Peer mediated learning strategies to promote teacher retention can also be facilitated by school psychologists through organization and promotion of collegial dialogue. (JBJ)

Abstract

Development of the cerebral cortex may be influenced by the composition of the maternal gut microbiota. To test this possibility, we administered probiotic Lactococcus lactis in drinking water to mouse dams from day 10.5 of gestation until pups reached postnatal day 1 (P1). Pups were assessed in a battery of behavioral tests starting at 10 weeks old. We found that females, but not males, exposed to probiotic during prenatal development spent more time in the center of the open field and displayed decreased freezing time in cue associated learning, compared to controls. Furthermore, we found that probiotic exposure changed the density of cortical neurons and increased the density of blood vessels in the cortical plate of P1 pups. Sex-specific differences were observed in the number of mitotic neural progenitor cells, which were increased in probiotic exposed female pups. In addition, we found that probiotic treatment in the latter half of pregnancy significantly increased plasma oxytocin levels in mouse dams, but not in the offspring. These results suggest that exposure of naïve, unstressed dams to probiotic may exert sex-specific long-term effects on cortical development and anxiety related behavior in the offspring.

Abstract

Linguistic creativity is the ability to understand indefinitely many previously unencountered sentences. In this paper, I compare Chomsky’s and Ricœur’s contrasting conceptions of this ability, in particular, their divergent views of nonsense. With nonsense, it seems as if syntax is outrunning semantics. Chomsky took this to show that syntax is autonomous of semantics. I propose a reading of Ricœur’s work on metaphor whereby Chomsky’s thesis is modified so that syntax and semantics are declared to be ultimately co-extensive notions.

Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become an epidemic with many recognised risk factors. However, the role of pre-hypertension in CKD is yet to be fully studied in our environment. Objectives: We set out to determine the magnitude of pre-hypertension and traditional CKD risk factors. We also determined their relationships to proteinuria. Subjects and Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted in two urban local government areas (Akure South and Ondo West) in Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria in March 2014. A total of 1,183 adults (M:F, 0.63:1) were studied. Their bio-data, history of cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, herbal usage, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), diabetes and hypertension were obtained. A total of 1,183 adults (M:F, 0.63:1) blood pressure (BP) and anthropometry were determined. Urinalysis was conducted using Combi-Uriscreen® 10SL. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20.0. Results: A total of 1183 adults (M:F, 1:1.6) were studied with a mean age of 44.7 ± 17.4 years. Their mean systolic BP, diastolic BP and body mass index were 129.6 ± 23.7 mmHg, 79.8 ± 14 mmHg and 26.2 ± 5.8 kg/m2, respectively. Pre-hypertension was present in 32.3% of the subjects, while hypertension was present in 43.4% of the subjects; 6.2% gave history of diabetes, 4.5% smoked cigarette, 68.3% used herbs and 44.1% used NSAIDs. Proteinuria was present in 25.9% of the subjects, while haematuria was present in 1.7% of the subjects. BP and age showed significant association to proteinuria. Conclusion: Pre-hypertension and known risk factors of CKD are prevalent in the people of Ondo State, Nigeria. Individuals with persistent pre-hypertension should be routinely screened for CKD and referred to the Nephrologist for early intervention.

Abstract

The northeastern Hunan Province hosts numerous hydrothermal Pb-Zn(-Cu-Co) polymetallic deposits. As a representative example, the Jingchong Cu-Co-Pb-Zn deposit is characterized by the lower Cu-Co and upper Pb-Zn mineralization, whereas little is known about Pb-Zn mineralization. In this study, three generations of sphalerite were identified based on their textural and geochemical differences. The Sph-I exhibits the oscillatory zoning that consists of reddish-brown Sph-Ia (poor in chalcopyrite inclusion) alternating with dark Sph-Ib with zoned chalcopyrite inclusion. Sph-II is composed of honey-brown Sph-IIa (abundant chalcopyrite droplets) and white clean Sph-IIb (rare chalcopyrite inclusion). The black Sph-III is characterized by nano- to submicron-sized chalcopyrite inclusions with typical “dusting” or “watermelon” texture and crosscuts all other sphalerite generations in veinlets. The electron microprobe and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry show that Sph-I has higher Fe and Mn contents, but lower Cd, Cu and Ag contents than Sph-II and Sph-III. Sphalerite geothermometry yields temperatures of 334–346 (±58)°C for Sph-I, 254–289 (±60)°C for Sph-II and 286 (±55) °C for Sph-III. The sulfur fugacity ranges from logfS2 values of −9.03 to −8.26 for Sph-I to −11.77 to −10.63 for Sph-II and −10.82 for Sph-III. The combined textural features and chemical compositions indicate that the self-organized mechanism forms Sph-I, and that the coupled dissolution and precipitation reactions triggered by the influx of Cu-elevated fluids are responsible for the formation of Sph-II and Sph-III. The associated pyrite and pyrrhotite inclusions in sphalerite are produced by the exsolution mechanism, while chalcopyrite inclusions are formed by co-precipitation due to local supersaturation at the interface of sphalerite with fluid. The 40Ar-39Ar dating of muscovite in the Jingchong deposit yields a mineralizing age of ca. 121.1 ± 2 Ma, consistent with the ca. 130–

Abstract

Motivation: As the size of high-throughput DNA sequence datasets continues to grow, the cost of transferring and storing the datasets may prevent their processing in all but the largest data centers or commercial cloud providers. To lower this cost, it should be possible to process only a subset of the original data while still preserving the biological information of interest. Results: Using 4 high-throughput DNA sequence datasets of differing sequencing depth from 2 species as use cases, we demonstrate the effect of processing partial datasets on the number of detected RNA transcripts using an RNA-Seq workflow. We used transcript detection to decide on a cutoff point. We then physically transferred the minimal partial dataset and compared with the transfer of the full dataset, which showed a reduction of approximately 25% in the total transfer time. These results suggest that as sequencing datasets get larger, one way to speed up analysis is to simply transfer the minimal amount of data that still sufficiently detects biological signal. Abstract

This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effect of dietary fatty acid (FA) profile on milk fat production and FA profile in dairy cows. The study also aimed to develop prediction models using a meta-regression approach. The database included 217 peer-reviewed articles on lactating dairy cows (n = 12,892), consisting of 515 treatment means. Effect size was assessed using the raw mean differences between diets with supplementary lipid sources and those without. Subgroup analyses were employed to assess heterogeneity. Diets rich in saturated FA (SFA) increased milk fat production and proportion, while reducing de novo FA in milk. Diets high in monounsaturated FA and polyunsaturated FA decreased mixed FA in milk. Most lipid-supplemented diets increase preformed FA in milk, except those rich in SFA. Prediction models were developed using meta-regression. Key predictors of milk fat production included neutral detergent fiber (NDF), dietary myristic acid, and milk production. Milk fat proportion was best predicted by dietary unsaturated FA, NDF, and forage. De novo FA in milk was predicted by dry matter intake (DMI) and dietary FA, while preformed FA was predicted by DMI, dietary oleic and linoleic acids. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of the dietary FA profile in evaluating the effects of lipids on milk fat production and FA profile. Accurate and precise predictions of milk fat production, proportion, and FA profile can be achieved by considering cow production and dietary characteristics.
