2. Fedward: Flexible Federated Backdoor Defense Framework with Non-IID Data

Abstract

Federated learning (FL) enables multiple clients to collaboratively train deep learning models while considering sensitive local datasets' privacy. However, adversaries can manipulate datasets and upload models by injecting triggers for federated backdoor attacks (FBA). Existing defense strategies against FBA consider specific and limited attacker models, and a sufficient amount of noise to be injected only mitigates rather than eliminates FBA. To address these deficiencies, we introduce a Flexible Federated Backdoor Defense Framework (Fedward) to ensure the elimination of adversarial backdoors. We decompose FBA into various attacks, and design amplified magnitude sparsification (AmGrad) and adaptive OPTICS clustering (AutoOPTICS) to address each attack. Meanwhile, Fedward uses the adaptive clipping method by regarding the number of samples in the benign group as constraints on the boundary. This ensures that Fedward can maintain the performance for the Non-IID scenario. We conduct experimental evaluations over three benchmark datasets and thoroughly compare them to state-of-the-art studies. The results demonstrate the promising defense performance from Fedward, moderately improved by 33% $\sim$ 75 in clustering defense methods, and 96.98%, 90.74%, and 89.8% for Non-IID to the utmost extent for the average FBA success rate over MNIST, FMNIST, and CIFAR10, respectively., Comment: Accepted by IEEE ICME 2023

3. Flat bands and magnetism in $\mathrm{\mathbf{Fe_4 Ge Te_2}}$ and $\mathrm{\mathbf{Fe_5GeTe_2}}$ due to bipartite crystal lattices

Abstract

$\mathrm{Fe_{n=4,5}GeTe_2}$ exhibits quasi-two-dimensional properties as a promising candidate for a near-room-temperature ferromagnet, which has attracted great interest. In this work, we notice that the crystal lattice of $\mathrm{Fe_{n=4,5}GeTe_2}$ can be approximately regarded as being stacked by three bipartite crystal lattices. By combining the model Hamiltonians of bipartite crystal lattices and first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic structure and the magnetism of $\mathrm{Fe_{n=4,5}GeTe_2}$. We conclude that flat bands near the Fermi level originate from the bipartite crystal lattices and that these flat bands are expected to lead to the itinerant ferromagnetism in $\mathrm{Fe_{n=4,5}GeTe_2}$. Interestingly, we also find that the magnetic moment of the Fe5 atom in $\mathrm{Fe_5 Ge Te_2}$ is distinct from the other Fe atoms and is sensitive to the Coulomb interaction $U$ and external pressure. Abstract

The building block of in-memory computing with spintronic devices is mainly based on the magnetic tunnel junction with perpendicular interfacial anisotropy (p-MTJ). The resulting asymmetric write and read-out operations impose challenges in downscaling and direct cascadability of p-MTJ devices. Here, we propose that a new symmetric write and read-out mechanism can be realized in perpendicular-anisotropy spin-orbit (PASO) quantum materials based on Fe3GeTe2 and WTe2. We demonstrate that field-free and deterministic reversal of the perpendicular magnetization can be achieved by employing unconventional charge to z-spin conversion. The resulting magnetic state can be readily probed with its intrinsic inverse process, i.e., z-spin to charge conversion. Using the PASO quantum material as a fundamental building block, we implement the functionally complete set of logic-in-memory operations and a more complex nonvolatile half-adder logic function. 5. Towards Privacy-Preserving Neural Architecture Search

Abstract

Machine learning promotes the continuous development of signal processing in various fields, including network traffic monitoring, EEG classification, face identification, and many more. However, massive user data collected for training deep learning models raises privacy concerns and increases the difficulty of manually adjusting the network structure. To address these issues, we propose a privacy-preserving neural architecture search (PP-NAS) framework based on secure multi-party computation to protect users' data and the model's parameters/hyper-parameters. PP-NAS outsources the NAS task to two non-colluding cloud servers for making full advantage of mixed protocols design. Complement to the existing PP machine learning frameworks, we redesign the secure ReLU and Max-pooling garbled circuits for significantly better efficiency ($3 \sim 436$ times speed-up). We develop a new alternative to approximate the Softmax function over secret shares, which bypasses the limitation of approximating exponential operations in Softmax while improving accuracy. Abstract

We aimed to explore the anti-obesity mechanism from the microbiome, metabolome, and transcriptome viewpoints, focusing on the sulfated polysaccharides found in the cooking liquid of Apostichopus japonicus (CLSPAJ) to explore the potential mediators of the anti-obesity effects in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). The mice treated with CLSPAJ showed a decrease in obesity and blood lipid levels. Gut microbiome dysbiosis caused by the HFD was reversed after CLSPAJ supplementation, along with increased levels of indole-3-ethanol, N-2-succinyl-L-glutamic acid 5-semialdehyde, and urocanic acid. These increases were positively related to the increased Akkermansia, Lactobacillus, Roseburia, and Phascolarctobacterium. Transcriptome analysis showed that B cell receptor signaling and cytochrome P450 xenobiotic metabolism were the main contributors to the improvement in obesity. Metabolome–transcriptome analysis revealed that CLSPAJ reversal of obesity was mainly due to amino acid metabolism. These findings suggest that CLSPAJ could be a valuable prebiotic preparation for preventing obesity-related diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Trichostatin A (TSA), a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, promotes the cytotoxicity of the genotoxic anticancer drug cisplatin, yet the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Herein, we revealed that TSA at a low concentration (1 μM) promoted the cisplatin-induced activation of caspase-3/6, which, in turn, increased the level of cleaved PARP1 and degraded lamin A&C, leading to more cisplatin-induced apoptosis and G2/M phase arrest of A549 cancer cells. Both ICP-MS and ToF-SIMS measurements demonstrated a significant increase in DNA-bound platinum in A549 cells in the presence of TSA, which was attributable to TSA-induced increase in the accessibility of genomic DNA to cisplatin attacking. The global quantitative proteomics results further showed that in the presence of TSA, cisplatin activated INF signaling to upregulate STAT1 and SAMHD1 to increase cisplatin sensitivity and downregulated ICAM1 and CD44 to reduce cell migration, synergistically promoting cisplatin cytotoxicity. Furthermore, in the presence of TSA, cisplatin downregulated TFAM and SLC3A2 to enhance cisplatin-induced ferroptosis, also contributing to the promotion of cisplatin cytotoxicity. Importantly, our posttranslational modification data indicated that acetylation at H4K8 played a dominant role in promoting cisplatin cytotoxicity. It places special emphasis on teachings about God's creation and dependent origination, original sin and Buddhist causality, as well as love and compassion. Despite the significant geographic distance between Christianity and Chinese Buddhism, the dialogue highlights potential cultural differences and interpretations. It also demonstrates mutual acceptance and the process of redefining one's own identity. Religious bioethics greatly benefits from a comprehensive study of various religions from around the world. Abstract

In measurement of interlayer stress between cylindrical or spherical contact convex-concave interfaces with related big curvature,the flat sensitive element will be curved to the form of the measured contact surfaces,which can cause measurement errors. This issue must be considered in developing sensors applied to measuring such kind of contact interfaces stress. For this application background and taking the cylindrical contact interfaces issue as an example,a finite element model consisting of a loading part with a convex cylindrical surface,a soft piezomagnetic sensitive material sheet,and a fixed part with a concave cylindrical surface is developed by using the approximate numerical method for analyzing combined structure with soft foam parts suggested previously by the author. Through numerical computation and related experiment,the axial compressive stress-strain curves of the sheets are obtained for several different curvatures of the loading surfaces and the effects of curvature on mechanical behaviors of piezomagnetic material sheets were analyzed. It is indicated that the bigger the curvature radius of the loading surface is,the bigger the slope of the approximate linear segment of the axial stress-strain curve is. The result is useful for development of sensors for measurement of interlayer pressurized force between cylindrical or spherical contact interfaces with related big curvature.

Abstract

Synthesis of large-scale single-crystalline graphene monolayers without multilayers involves the fabrication of proper single-crystalline substrates and the ubiquitous formation of multilayered graphene islands during chemical vapor deposition. Here, a method of cyclic electrochemical polishing combined with thermal annealing, which allows the conversion of commercial polycrystalline Cu foils to single-crystal Cu(111) with an almost 100% yield, is presented. A global “bottom-up-etching” method that is capable of fabricating large-area pure single-crystalline graphene monolayers without multilayers through selectively etching bottom multilayered graphene underneath large area as-grown graphene monolayer on Cu(111) surface is demonstrated. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) measurement of the pure monolayer graphene film shows a high average sheet conductivity of 2.8 mS and mean carrier mobility of 6903 cm2 V−1 s−1 over a large area. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the selective etching is induced by the much easier diffusion of hydrogen atoms than hydrocarbon radicals across the edges of the top graphene layer, and the simulated selective etching processes based on phase field modeling are well consistent with experimental observations. This work provides new ways toward the production of single-crystal Cu(111) and the synthesis of pure monolayer graphene with high electronic quality.
