Abstract

The Latin American Giant Observatory (LAGO) is a ground-based extended cosmic rays observatory designed to study transient astrophysical events, the role of the atmosphere on the formation of secondary particles, and space-weather-related phenomena. With the use of a network of Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCDs), LAGO measures the secondary particle flux, a consequence of the interaction of astroparticles impinging on the atmosphere of Earth. This flux can be grouped into three distinct basic constituents: electromagnetic, muonic, and hadronic components. When a particle enters a WCD, it generates a measurable signal characterized by unique features correlating to the particle's type and the detector's specific response. The resulting charge histograms from these signals provide valuable insights into the flux of primary astroparticles and their key characteristics. However, these data are insufficient to effectively distinguish between the contributions of different secondary particles. In this work, we extend our previous research by using detailed simulations of the expected atmospheric response to the primary flux and the corresponding response of our WCDs to atmospheric radiation. This dataset, which was created through the combination of the outputs of the ARTI and Meiga simulation frameworks, simulated the expected WCD signals produced by the flux of secondary particles during one day at the LAGO site in Bariloche, Argentina, situated at 865 m above sea level. This was achieved by analyzing the real-time magnetospheric and local atmospheric conditions for February and March of 2012, where the resultant atmospheric secondary-particle flux was integrated into a specific Meiga application featuring a comprehensive Geant4 model of the WCD at this LAGO location. The final output was modified for effective integration into our machine-learning pipeline. With an implementation of Ordering Points to Identify the Clustering Structure (OPTICS), a density-based clustering algorithm used to identify patterns in data collected by a single WCD, we have further refined our approach to implement a method that categorizes particle groups using advanced unsupervised machine learning techniques. This allowed for the differentiation among particle types and utilized the detector's nuanced response to each, thus pinpointing the principal contributors within each group. Our analysis has demonstrated that applying our enhanced methodology can accurately identify the originating particles with a high degree of confidence on a single-pulse basis, highlighting its precision and reliability. These promising results suggest the feasibility of future implementations of machine-leaning-based models throughout LAGO's distributed detection network and other astroparticle observatories for semi-automated, onboard and real-time data analysis. Abstract

The Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) project is the world's leading international neutrino and nucleon decay experiment comprising a next-generation underground water Cherenkov detector and upgraded Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) neutrino beam. It will provide an enormous potential to discover the leptonic charge-parity violation, to investigate the Grand Unified Theory by proton decay exploration, and to determine the neutrino mass ordering. Further, Hyper-K will significantly enhance the capability to observe solar neutrinos and neutrinos from other astronomical sources in comparison with its predecessors. After the budget approval in January 2020, the Hyper-K project officially began, and the operation is expected to start in 2027. The excavations of a 2.0 km long access tunnel and the tunnels for the detector facility have been completed. In October 2022 it was started the excavation of one of the world's largest underground caverns to suite the HK detector. Abstract

Water Cherenkov detectors like Super-Kamiokande, and the next generation Hyper-Kamiokande are adding gadolinium to their water to improve the detection of neutrons. By detecting neutrons in addition to the leptons in neutrino interactions, an improved separation between neutrino and anti-neutrinos, and reduced backgrounds for proton decay searches can be expected. The neutron signal itself is still small and can be confused with muon spallation and other background sources. In this paper, machine learning techniques are employed to optimize the neutron capture detection capability in the new intermediate water Cherenkov detector (IWCD) for Hyper-K. In particular, boosted decision tree (XGBoost), graph convolutional network (GCN), and dynamic graph convolutional neural network (DGCNN) models are developed and benchmarked against a statistical likelihood-based approach, achieving up to a 10% increase in classification accuracy. Characteristic features are also engineered from the datasets and analyzed using SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) to provide insight into the pivotal factors influencing event type outcomes. The dataset used in this research consisted of roughly 1.6 million simulated particle gun events, divided nearly evenly between neutron capture and a background electron source. The current samples used for training are representative only, and more realistic samples will need to be made for the analyses of real data. The current class split is 50/50, but there is expected to be a difference between the classes in the real experiment, and one might consider using resampling techniques to address the issue of serious imbalances in the class distribution in real data if necessary.

Abstract

The GERDA experiment at LNGS of INFN is equipped with an active muon veto. The main part of the system is a water Cherenkov veto with 66 PMTs in the water tank surrounding the GERDA cryostat. The muon flux recorded by this veto shows a seasonal modulation. Two causes have been identified: (i) secondary muons from the CNGS neutrino beam (2.2%) and (ii) a temperature modulation of the atmosphere (1.4%). A mean cosmic muon rate of Iμ0=(3.477±0.002stat±0.067sys)×10−4/(s · m2) was found in good agreement with other experiments at LNGS. Combining the present result with those from previous experiments at LNGS the effective temperature coefficient αT,Lngs is determined to 0.93 ± 0.03. A fit of the temperature coefficients measured at various underground sites yields a kaon to pion ratio rK/π of 0.10 ± 0.03.

Abstract

In this work we show the capabilities of a water Cherenkov detector (WCD) to detect high energy neutrons. We present the simulation of the response of a doped WCD to 500 MeV monochromatic neutrons using Geant4. To do this, a detailed model of the WCD has been implemented. The active volume of the detector is composed of pure water and different concentrations of a 35 Cl based additive. The addition of this dopant shows an enhancement in the detection of high energetic neutrons. The sensitivity of this detector to neutrons achieved in our simulations is a relevant result for cosmic rays and space weather studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Due to a very low production rate of electron anti-neutrinos ($\bar{\nu}_e$) via nuclear fusion in the Sun, a flux of solar $\bar{\nu}_e$ is unexpected. An appearance of $\bar{\nu}_e$ in solar neutrino flux opens a new window for the new physics beyond the standard model. In particular, a spin-flavor precession process is expected to convert an electron neutrino into an electron anti-neutrino (${\nu_e\to\bar{\nu}_e}$) when neutrino has a finite magnetic moment. In this work, we have searched for solar $\bar{\nu}_e$ in the Super-Kamiokande experiment, using neutron tagging to identify their inverse beta decay signature. We identified 78 $\bar{\nu}_e$ candidates for neutrino energies of 9.3 to 17.3 MeV in 2970.1 live days with a fiducial volume of 22.5 kiloton water (183.0 kton$\cdot$year exposure). The energy spectrum has been consistent with background predictions and we thus derived a 90% confidence level upper limit of ${4.7\times10^{-4}}$ on the $\nu_e\to\bar{\nu}_e$ conversion probability in the Sun. Abstract

In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m$^3$/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m$^3$/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be $115\pm1$ $\mu$s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of $111\pm2$ ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. 17. Scalable solutions for the Control Unit of the KM3NeT DAQ system

Abstract

The neutrino telescopes of KM3NeT are being incrementally expanded, and will reach their final size in the coming years. New versions of optical modules running new versions of firmware and new instrumentation for calibration are being introduced in the originally repetitive lattice. The inner architecture and data flow of the Control Unit of the KM3NeT telescopes is described, with information about computational and architectural complexity. The current goal is to control two full blocks of the KM3NeT/ARCA detector, i.e. 4370 CLBs and 128340 photomultipliers for 230 detection units, with a single mid-range commercial server machine. The system is designed with software protections and fault tolerance for hardware failure.

18. Measuring the vertical muon intensity with the ALTO prototype at Linnaeus University

Abstract

ALTO is a project, currently in the research and development phase, with the goal of constructing a Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray observatory in the southern hemisphere. It will detect the particle content reaching the ground from the interactions of either VHE gamma rays or cosmic rays in the atmosphere known as extensive air showers. In this thesis, we use an ALTO prototype built at Linneaus University to estimate the vertical muon intensity in Växjö. The atmospheric muons we detect at ground level come from hadronic showers caused by a cosmic ray entering the atmosphere. Such showers are considered background noise in the context of VHE gamma-ray astronomy, and the presence of muons is an important indicator of the nature of the shower, and thus of the primary particle. The measurement is done by isolating events that produce signals in two small scintillation detectors that are part of the ALTO prototype, and are placed almost directly above each other. This gives us a data set that we assume represents muons travelling along a narrow set of trajectories, and by measuring the rate of such events, we estimate the muon intensity. We estimate the corresponding momentum threshold using two different methods; Monte Carlo simulation and calculation of the mean energy loss. The vertical muon intensity found through this method is about 21% higher than commonly accepted values. We discuss some possible explanations for this discrepancy, and conclude that the most likely explanation is that the isolated data set contains a significant number of “false positives”, i.e., events that do not represent a single muon following the desired trajectory.

19. Using machine learning to improve neutron identification in water Cherenkov detectors.

Abstract

Water Cherenkov detectors like Super-Kamiokande, and the next generation Hyper-Kamiokande are adding gadolinium to their water to improve the detection of neutrons. By detecting neutrons in addition to the leptons in neutrino interactions, an improved separation between neutrino and anti-neutrinos, and reduced backgrounds for proton decay searches can be expected. The neutron signal itself is still small and can be confused with muon spallation and other background sources. In this paper, machine learning techniques are employed to optimize the neutron capture detection capability in the new intermediate water Cherenkov detector (IWCD) for Hyper-K. In particular, boosted decision tree (XGBoost), graph convolutional network (GCN), and dynamic graph convolutional neural network (DGCNN) models are developed and benchmarked against a statistical likelihood-based approach, achieving up to a 10% increase in classification accuracy. Characteristic features are also engineered from the datasets and analyzed using SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) to provide insight into the pivotal factors influencing event type outcomes. The dataset used in this research consisted of roughly 1.6 million simulated particle gun events, divided nearly evenly between neutron capture and a background electron source. The current samples used for training are representative only, and more realistic samples will need to be made for the analyses of real data. 20. ALTO Timing Calibration : Calibration of the ALTO detector array based on cosmic-ray simulations

Abstract

This thesis describes a timing calibration method for the detector array of the ALTO experiment. ALTO is a project currently at the prototype phase that aims to build a gamma-ray astronomical observatory at high-altitude in the Southern hemisphere. ALTO can be assumed as a hybrid system as each detector consists of a Water Cherenkov Detector (WCD) on top of a Scintillator Detector (SD), providing an increased signal to background discrimination compared to other WCD arrays. ALTO is planned to complement the Very-High-Energy (VHE) observations by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma ray observatory that collects data from the Northern sky. By the time the full array of 1242 detectors is installed to the proposed site, ALTO together with HAWC and the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will serve as a state-of-the-art detection system for VHE gamma-rays combining the WCD and the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) techniques. When a VHE gamma-ray or cosmic-ray enters the Earth’s atmosphere, it initiates an Extensive Air Shower (EAS). These particles are sampled by the detector array and by checking the arrival times of nearby tanks, the method reveals whether a detector suffers from a time-offset. The data analyzed in this thesis derive from CORSIKA (COsmic Ray SImulation for KAscade) and GEANT4 (GEometry ANd Tracking) simulations of cosmic-ray events within the energy range of 1–1:6TeV, which mainly consist of protons. The high flux of this particular type of cosmic-rays, gives us a tool to statistically evaluate the results generated by the proposed timing calibration method. In the framework of this thesis, I have written code in Python programming language in order to develop the timing calibration method. The method identifies detectors that suffer from time-offsets and improves the reconstruction accuracy of the ALTO detector array. Abstract

The GADZOOKS! project pursues the upgrade of the Super-Kamiokande detector as a way to efficiently detect thermal neutrons. Inverse beta decay reactions, as well as charged current quasi-elastic (CCQE) scattering of low energy anti-neutrinos (up to a few hundreds of MeV) in SK, produce one positron and one neutron in the final state. Being able to observe the final state neutron in coincidence with the prompt positron would mean that SK could identify these reactions as genuine with very high confidence. GADZOOKS! will open to Super-Kamiokande - and water Cherenkov detectors in general - a wealth of physics currently inaccessible due to background limitations. The most important is observing for the first time the diffuse supernova neutrino background: Super-Kamiokande enriched with gadolinium will discover it after few years of running. The main R&D program towards GADZOOKS! is EGADS: a 200 ton fully instrumented tank built in a new cavern in the Kamioka mine. EGADS incorporates all the necessary subsystems to make GADZOOKS! a reality. In this contribution we will describe EGADS, we will present its current status and discuss the main results and conclusions arrived at so far. In addition, we will analyze other issues specific to the running of GADZOOKS!.

22. Hardware-level calibration of the Chitaga Water Cherenkov Detector in the GUANE array for space weather study

Abstract

Currently Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCDs) play an important role for space weather and cosmic rays studies. Around the world several observatories are trying to study extremely high energy particles, which actual terrestrial accelerators are unable to do. The GUANE array is located in the Universidad Industrial de Santander (Bucaramanga-Colombia), and it takes part in the Latin American Giant Observatory (LAGO), which is mainly oriented in basic research on three branches of Astroparticle Physics: the Extreme Universe, Space Weather phenomena, [1], and the Atmospheric Radiation at ground level. To pursue these aims scientists need confidence in the data provided by WCDs, in this case, it depends on carrying out a strict calibration process to characterize temporal and energy response. In this paper, a new hardware-level WCD calibration methodology and the measurement of the 07.09.2017 Forbush decrease for its validation is presented.

Abstract

In this work we show the neutron detection capabilities of a water Cherenkov detector (WCD) using pure water, as well as an aqueous solution of sodium chloride as the detection volume. The experiments were performed using a WCD with a single photomultiplier tube (PMT), and a 252Cf neutron source. We show that fast neutrons from a 252Cf source directly impinging the detector can be clearly detected and identified over the natural radiation background. We also present results from numerical simulations that describe the response of the WCD to neutrons of different energies. To do this, a detailed model for the WCD and of the neutron source spectra have been implemented. The implemented simulation code takes into account the interaction processes involved in the detection of neutrons using WCD, and support the experimental evidence introduced in this work. Being both the active volumes analyzed in this work (pure water) and the additive (sodium chloride), cheap, non-toxic and easily accessible materials, the results obtained are of interest for the development of large neutron detectors for different applications. Of particular importance are the detection of special nuclear materials, as well as those applications related with space weather phenomena. 24. The ESS Based Neutrino Super Beam for CP Violation Discovery

Abstract

After measuring the last neutrino mixing angle θ13 and finding it relatively large, the observation of CP violation in the leptonic sector is now reachable with the condition to have significantly more intense neutrino beams than the existing ones. For this θ13 value, it came out that going to the second oscillation maximum instead of the first one, provides more sensitivity to CP violation. The European Spallation Source facility in Lund, designed to accelerate protons to 2.0 GeV at a repetition rate of 14 Hz for neutron production, could also be used to produce a copious number of neutrinos. Doubling the frequency of its proton linac opens the possibility to operate the facility simultaneously for neutron and neutrino production. An accumulator ring would be needed to shorten the pulses from 2.86 ms for neutrons to few μs in order to reduce to acceptable levels the electric current sent to the magnetic horn focusing charged mesons to acceptable levels for the neutrino production. This accumulator could also be used by the neutron facility to increase its performance. Coupled with a megaton Water Cherenkov far detector placed at the optimal distance, this facility could efficiently exploite the second oscillation maximum to cover a large fraction of the CP violation parameter δCP at 5 σ confidence level.

Abstract

To characterize the signals registered by the different types of water Cherenkov detectors (WCD) used by the Latin American Giant Observatory (LAGO) Project, it is necessary to develop detailed simulations of the detector response to the flux of secondary particles at the detector level. These particles are originated during the interaction of cosmic rays with the atmosphere. In this context, the LAGO project aims to study the high energy component of gamma rays bursts (GRBs) and space weather phenomena by looking for the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). Focus in this, a complete and complex chain of simulations is being developed that account for geomagnetic effects, atmospheric reaction and detector response at each LAGO site. Abstract

Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCDs), which are part of the LAGO experimental array, are being built in the cities of Riobamba, Quito and Cumbaya in Ecuador. In order to increase the sensitivity and efficiency of these devices, it is necessary to ensure that the water used as radiator media absorbs as low as possible the UV light due to the incident particles and produced by Cherenkov effect. To do this, we built and used a device that allows us to measure the attenuation length directly. Water samples purified by different techniques are analyzed. Some characteristics like absorbance, refractive index, conductivity and cost are studied. We attempt to simulate the Cherenkov effect in FLUKA, we report our findings and perform a comparison with results from previous reports of LAGO sites elsewhere, and with other experiments that use WCD technology.

Abstract

This work presents two shielding concepts to reduce muon-induced and ambient background sources in future cryogenic dark matter experiments below 1 event/tonne/year: a water Cherenkov detector and a Gd-loaded liquid scintillator. Both veto systems were designed and optimized through GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations. In this context, an accurate model of the light collection in WCDs was implemented and validated via prototype measurements.

The objectives of the Observatory are to probe the origin and characteristics of cosmic rays above 1017 eV and to study the interactions of these, the most energetic particles observed in nature. The Auger design features an array of 1660 water Cherenkov particle detector stations spread over 3000 km2 overlooked by 24 air fluorescence telescopes. In addition, three high elevation fluorescence telescopes overlook a 23.5 km2, 61-detector infilled array with 750 m spacing. The Observatory has been in successful operation since completion in 2008 and has recorded data from an exposure exceeding 40,000 km2 sr yr. Abstract

In March 2013, the NEMO Phase 2 tower has been successfully installed in the Capo Passero site, at a depth of 3500 m and 80 km off from the southern coast of Sicily. The unfurled tower is 450 m high; it is composed of 8 mechanical floors, for a total amount of 32 PMTs and various instruments for environmental measurements. The tower positioning is achieved by an acoustic system. The tower is continuously acquiring and transmitting all the measured signals to shore. Data reduction is completely performed in the Portopalo shore station by a dedicated computing facility connected to the persistent storage system at LNS, in Catania. Results from the last 9 months of acquisition will be presented. In particular, the analyzed optical rates, showing stable and low baseline values, are compatible with the contribution mainly of 40K light emission, with a small percentage of light bursts due to bioluminescence. These features reveal the optimal nature of the Capo Passero abyssal site to host a km3-sized Neutrino Telescope. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

Abstract

The Large Aperture GRB Observatory (LAGO) is aiming at the detection of the high energy (around 100 GeV) component of Gamma Ray Bursts, using the single particle technique in arrays of Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) in high mountain sites (Chacaltaya, Bolivia, 5300 m a.s.l., Pico Espejo, Venezuela, 4750 m a.s.l., Sierra Negra, Mexico, 4650 m a.s.l). WCD at high altitude offer a unique possibility of detecting low gamma fluxes in the 10 GeV - 1 TeV range. Abstract

The MODULAr project foresees the exploitation of a new liquid Argon imaging detector, of at least 20 kt fiducial mass, to be operated in a shallow depth location under the Gran Sasso Mountain. It will be devoted to study neutrino oscillations with an optimized off-axis CNGS neutrino beam. Cosmic neutrinos as well as proton decay will also be addressed. The MODULAr detector will vastly inherit from the technology developed for ICARUS-T600. However, such an increase in the volume over the current ICARUS-T600 needs to be carefully considered. It is concluded that a single, huge volume is an inoperable and uneconomical solution for many reasons. A very large mass is best realized with a modular set of many identical, independent units, each of about 5 kt, "cloning" the basic technology of the ICARUS-T600. Several of such modular units will be assembled to reach at least 20 kt as initial sensitive volume. The increase of the active volume of about one order of magnitude with respect to the ICARUS-T600 detector requires some specific R&D activity, which will be implemented in a similar to 360 ton prototype unit (SLICE) of reduced length.

Abstract

The KAMIOKANDE-II water Cherenkov detector for the measurements of nucleon decay and/or solar neutrino has been operating in the underground laboratory at a depth of 2, 700m. w. e. (meter water equivalent) in Kamioka mine of Gifu Prefecture. Concentrations of 238U, 232Th, 226Ra and 222Rn as the major background sources have been measured for various kinds of rocks, mine water, mine air and high purity water used as a detector during the period from August 1986 to December 1987. The concentration levels of these radionuclides and their seasonal variration have become clear. Some of these results have provided useful informations for decreasing the background level of water Cherenkov detector.
